Classroom Management In Michigan Second Grade Classrooms, Alyssa Peterson

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

An important topic in elementary education today is classroom management. I explored this topic through interviews and surveys with second-grade teachers around Michigan in order to learn more about the question, “What classroom management systems and strategies are being used in Michigan second-grade classrooms today and are they effective at creating a supportive learning environment?” I obtained an in-depth picture of seven different classrooms and the differing methods the teachers use to manage their classrooms. Emphasized elements in the majority of classrooms include flexibility, relationships with students, expectations and routines, and communication with families.

Hypersonic Strike Weapons (HSW) are hypersonic weapons capable of maneuvering at hypersonic speeds that makes them much more difficult to engage when traveling at such high speeds. They are a relatively new technology that is currently being pursued by multiple nations throughout the world.

The United States is currently the only country that has officially declared all …

Evaluating The Effects Of Disability On Preferred Proximity, Mia Nicole Mcmahon Jan 2024

Evaluating The Effects Of Disability On Preferred Proximity, Mia Nicole Mcmahon

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

People with disabilities frequently face the barriers of prejudice, stereotypes, low expectations, and the doubt that they can be adequate romantic partners. This study sought to examine whether the description of a target individual’s proximity to disability would inform the participants’ preference for social closeness or social distance from the target. The target individuals described in the vignettes varied in their proximity to disability in that one target was disabled and did not disclose their identity, the second was likewise disabled and disclosed this, the third was not disabled themself but had a disabled sibling, and the last vignette described …

Correlation Of Alcohol Use, Depression, And Social Roles In Young Adults, Eleise Oyster Jan 2024

Correlation Of Alcohol Use, Depression, And Social Roles In Young Adults, Eleise Oyster

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Past research suggests that the presence of depression is related to an increase in risky alcohol use. Additionally, existing studies have also found that social roles may increase or decrease an individual’s alcohol use. In this research, the intent is to develop a better understanding of the connection between alcohol use, depression, and social roles. It is hypothesized that elevated alcohol use is positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated to social roles. Fifty-two participants (healthy graduate and undergraduate students) were recruited from the EMU campus through the SONA system. Using data from the self-report questionnaire where participants reported on …

Five scales were utilized in this study including Professor-Student Rapport Scale, Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, Academic Resilience Scale (ARS-30), Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES), …

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin Jan 2024

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this work, I argue for the necessity of framing settler colonialism as an ongoing process of exploitation and genocide, rather than an event of the past. Understanding settler colonialism as ongoing allows us to recognize how white supremacy utilizes direct and indirect forms of violence to not just occupy land but extract resources, build infrastructure that ensures its survival, and displace indigenous peoples. I offer first a sketch of settler colonialism as it is happening in Palestine, Algeria, and the Americas. I engage with books and research essays to think comparatively about these phenomena & further reveal the legacies …

Changes In Visual Scanning During Stimulus Equivalence Training, Katelyn Jones Jan 2024

Changes In Visual Scanning During Stimulus Equivalence Training, Katelyn Jones

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Stimulus equivalence-based training allows learners to gain new knowledge by deriving novel relations without being directly taught. This is an important skill that some individuals, especially in special populations, have as a deficit. One possible reason individuals may struggle with stimulus equivalence is a deficit in visual experience that promotes selective attention to stimulus properties. With the advancement of technology, visual tracking and visual scanning offers a means to assess visual behavior in detail while learning stimulus associations. Identifying individual differences, and deficits in visual scanning behavior should provide researchers with better means to design interventions, promoting appropriate visual scanning …

Expressions And Attributions Of Ableism For Disabilities That Were Caused Or Congenital, Hadlie R. Daigle

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Ableism is a form of systemic oppression that prejudices disabled people. Ableist views perpetuate the idea that being non-disabled as the ideal and disability is a flaw or weakness to avoid. This research compared how different reasons for disabilities might lead to ableism toward auditory and cognitive disabilities. Some participants read about an individual who had cognitive disabilities (TBI) from congenital reasons, others due to illness, and then others due to a lack of caution leading to an injury resulting in TBI. Similarly, participants also read about individuals who had experienced an auditory deficit (deafness) due to these varying reasons …
