Remember The Human: A Systematic Review Of Ethical Considerations In Reddit Research, Casey Fiesler, Michael Zimmer, Nicholas Proferes, Sarah A. Gilbert, Naiyan Jones
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Reddit is one of the world's most prominent social media platforms, and also a valuable source of data for internet researchers. However, working with this kind of data also presents novel ethical complications for researchers, including issues around privacy, vulnerable populations, and unintended consequences. This paper describes an analysis of 134 papers that rely on Reddit data while also including some discussion of ethical implications and/or considerations by the researchers. Our analysis of these papers reveals common ethical issues and ethically motivated methodological decisions, as described by the researchers themselves, while also exposing some gaps for further ethical contemplation for …
Demagoguery And Political Rhetoric: A Comparative Analysis Of Father Charles E. Coughlin And Donald J. Trump, Charlotte Moody
Demagoguery And Political Rhetoric: A Comparative Analysis Of Father Charles E. Coughlin And Donald J. Trump, Charlotte Moody
History and Political Science | Senior Theses
Many Americans can still recall James Madison’s warning against mob rule in The Federalist Papers. What Madison did not articulate as memorably, however, was that it is not the mob we need to fear, but the demagogue. Who is the one fueling the fire through their use of sensational rhetoric? A term from ancient Greek mythology, a demagogue generally means a persuasive orator and leader of the people. The historical demagogue has many iterations in modern American politics that continue to undermine democracy and justice. However, there has not been a comprehensive study comparing two of the arguably most influential …
Tragedy To Transformation: The Ongoing Impact Of September 11th In The United States, Alison Mcneal
Tragedy To Transformation: The Ongoing Impact Of September 11th In The United States, Alison Mcneal
History and Political Science | Senior Theses
On September 11, 2001 (9/11), a coordinated Islamist terrorist attack hit the United States, consisting of four commercial airline hijackings and suicide attacks by 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group, Al-Qaeda. This paper identifies the significant and enduring influences of 9/11 on the United States including discrimination against people of Middle Eastern descent following the attack, a connection between the events of 9/11 and the enhanced interrogation techniques at the Abu Ghraib prison, and a surge in patriotism characterized by a sense of public solidarity and a notable rise in military enlistment in the Armed Forces. Through an …
Breaking Bias: A Singular Chapter Solution For Racial Equity In Consumer Bankruptcy, Jerron R. Wheeler
Breaking Bias: A Singular Chapter Solution For Racial Equity In Consumer Bankruptcy, Jerron R. Wheeler
Faculty Articles
This article explores the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, revealing a looming medical debt crisis among Black families, while examining the intersection of racial bias, attorney practices, and the existing two-chapter consumer bankruptcy system. Proposing a solution, the article advocates for the consolidation of Chapters 7 and 13 into a single chapter, citing the Consumer Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2020 (CBRA) as a potential remedy. Further, this article argues that a single chapter would simplify the bankruptcy process, reducing the influence of attorney bias and promoting uniform eligibility criteria. This approach aims to make debt relief more accessible, especially for …
Effects Of Dehumanization And Disgust-Eliciting Language On Attitudes Toward Immigration: A Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data, Katherine S. Wahrer, Cynthia J. Najdowski, John V. Passarelli
Effects Of Dehumanization And Disgust-Eliciting Language On Attitudes Toward Immigration: A Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data, Katherine S. Wahrer, Cynthia J. Najdowski, John V. Passarelli
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Attitudes towards immigration have been shown to be driven by dehumanization and disgust. The more people dehumanize immigrants and the more disgusted they feel, the more negative attitudes they tend to have toward immigrants. However, little is known about how exposure to social media content that links dehumanization, disgust, and immigration influences users’ attitudes on this issue. This is important to consider because the majority of adults in the United States are on social media. We used Twitter data, machine learning, and sentiment analysis to investigate whether exposure to dehumanizing or disgust-eliciting tweets about immigration impacts users’ own sentiment toward …

Objective: To estimate the behavioral impacts of training police officers in implicit bias awareness and management. Hypotheses: Training police in implicit bias reduces racial and ethnic disparities in stops, arrests, summonses, frisks, searches, and/or use of force. Method: A cluster randomized controlled trial using the stepped wedge design was applied to 14,471 officers in the New York City Police Department, with a one-day training delivered to clusters of police commands between May 2018 and April 2019, and outcomes measured with police records of individual events from April 2018 through May 2019. Police records were supplemented with survey data on 1,973 …

Anti-Ableist And Disability Justice Pedagogies In Social Work Education, Rose C. B. Singh, Laura Yakas, Laura J. Wernick, Shanna K. Kattari, Elspeth Slayter, Sarah Taylor
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Our personal and collective experiences of ableism and disability brought us together to envision anti-ableist and disability justice pedagogies in social work education. We begin by describing, defining, and reviewing key terminology and concepts, including disability, ableism, and saneism, by drawing on social work and interdisciplinary literature and situating disabled students’ and educators’ experiences in social work education. We provide definitions of anti-ableism and disability justice (e.g., Sins Invalid, 2016, 2019) and a brief overview of how anti-ableism and disability justice have been articulated in social work and related literature. We highlight the broader pedagogical approaches that have inspired our …
Managerial Coaches’ Enacted Behaviors And The Beliefs That Guide Them: Perspectives From Managers And Their Coachees, Beth Adele, Andrea D. Ellinger
Managerial Coaches’ Enacted Behaviors And The Beliefs That Guide Them: Perspectives From Managers And Their Coachees, Beth Adele, Andrea D. Ellinger
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
Introduction: Managerial coaching is considered a powerful developmental intervention in the workplace that has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. A growing base of scholarship examining the efficacy of this form of coaching has identified numerous benefits, primarily for employees receiving this form of coaching, and some limited attention has focused on benefits for managers who coach. However, an important topic related to managerial coaching that has gone under-explored is the beliefs that managers have about coaching. Since beliefs often guide behaviors, obtaining a more robust understanding of the beliefs that guide managers who serve as coaches is warranted and …

Effects Of Internalized Stigma On Quality Of Life And Stress In Undergraduate Students With Chronic Health Conditions, Kevin R. Criswell Phd
Effects Of Internalized Stigma On Quality Of Life And Stress In Undergraduate Students With Chronic Health Conditions, Kevin R. Criswell Phd
Psychology Faculty Publications
Students with mental and/or physical chronic health conditions (CHCs) are at risk for diminished quality of life (QoL) and greater stress. Internalized stigma (the incorporation of a negative stereotype into one’s identity) may help explain this quality of life (QoL) and stress disparity. While prior work demonstrated that internalized stigma affects health outcomes, studies tend to examine single or small sets of outcomes, and studies of internalized stigma in students with mental and/or physical CHCs are sparse. The present study examined the effects of internalized stigma in three cohorts of students with mental and/or physical CHCs (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23; n …

Impact Of Professional Development On Higher Education Professionals: Specific To The Areas Of Registrar And Admissions, Jana Jaraysi
EWU Dissertation Collection
This study explores the effects of a year-long professional development program on higher education professionals, explicitly focusing on the Admissions and Registrar fields. While existing research has primarily concentrated on the connection between professional development and general Student Affairs roles, there continues to be a significant gap in understanding the distinct impact of such programs within the specialized roles of Admissions and Registrar professionals. This research seeks to address this gap by shedding light on how professional development initiatives shape the professional landscape within higher education. Using an exploratory qualitative case study approach, this research centers on analyzing one prominent …

Nebraska Department Of Correctional Services Classification And Crowding Project Technical Report, Zachary Hamilton, Alex Kigerl, Baylee Allen-Flores, Addison Kobie, John Ursino, Amber Krushas, Brian Gildea, Ryan E. Spohn
Reports
In response to recent reports and noted issues of prison crowding, NDCS (Nebraska Department of Correctional Services) contracted with NCJR (Nebraska Center for Justice Research) to investigate the impacts of crowding. Going beyond the CSG, CJI, and Master Plan reports (Council of State Governments, 2015; Criminal Justice Institute, 2022; Dewberry, 2023; JFA, 2020), NDCS requested NCJR identify which facilities and populations are impacted greatest via crowding. Further, findings provide areas of recommended changes needed to ease growth and help maintain safety and functionality of NDCS institutions. As part of Phase I, we completed a process evaluation, which included a review …
Social-Emotional Learning Integration In Italian Classrooms, Rachael Blair
Social-Emotional Learning Integration In Italian Classrooms, Rachael Blair
International Professional Development Partnerships (IPDP) Consortium
This study examines how social-emotional learning (SEL) is integrated into Italian classrooms. Specifically, what types of SEL goals, activities, or practices are implemented within the curriculum. The methods used to collect data included reading and analyzing the blogs of other participants of IPDS Siena. Prior to my travels, during my time in Siena, and after returning to the United States, I wrote my own blog posts that have allowed me to reflect on the SEL techniques used in my mentor teacher’s classroom. I also collected field notes while in the school to evaluate how my mentor incorporated and prioritized social …
Discourses That Undermine Union Movements: A Multimodal Analysis Of Union-Busting Videos, Theresa A. Catalano, Julia Schleck
Discourses That Undermine Union Movements: A Multimodal Analysis Of Union-Busting Videos, Theresa A. Catalano, Julia Schleck
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Labor unions in the United States have experienced decades of decline, but recent years have seen a rebirth of union campaigns and successes. Because unions are once again becoming a threat to large companies, it is reasonable to assume that efforts to discourage organizing efforts will increase and become even more robust in the near future. Although traditionally, companies have worked to suspend union organizing through captive audience meetings in which unions were discussed via verbal or written modes, more recent means of reaching workers with anti-union messages incorporate a variety of communication strategies to get the message across. As …
Insufficient Sleep In Ohio And Its Complication In Risky Behaviors, James Dai, Jackson Mitchell
Insufficient Sleep In Ohio And Its Complication In Risky Behaviors, James Dai, Jackson Mitchell
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Background Insufficient sleep is a major public health concern in the United States. Lack of sufficient sleep causes impaired decision making that can increase the chance of participating in risky behavior. Methods County Health Rankings data from Ohio in 2016 and 2022 were reviewed for percentage of insufficient sleep and risky behaviors. We identified excessive alcohol use, driving deaths due to alcohol, drug overdose mortality, and percentage of smokers as risky behaviors. Urban and rural counties were identified via HRSA. Results: There was a significant increase in insufficient sleep from 2016 to 2022 in Ohio. Smoking and drug overdose mortality …

A Systematic Study Of Freezing Behavior In Earthworms In Response To Auditory And Vibratory Stimuli, Navjot Singh, A. Burton, Dragana Ivkovich Claflin
Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials
This study examined the parameters needed to reliably induce a freezing fear response to a predator-like auditory stimulus in the earthworm species Eisenia Fetida. Previous work from our lab found that a grunting noise was more reliable in causing freezing compared to a mole sound, i.e. artificial versus natural predators of E. Fetida (Worthen et al., 2024). In the present study, 8 amplitude levels of grunting sound were presented in either serial or random order. The speaker location was varied so that it either did or did not touch the apparatus, thus producing a mechanical vibration in addition to the …
A Rare Leadership Journey: Exploring Perspectives Of Women In Construction, Taylor M. Krueger
A Rare Leadership Journey: Exploring Perspectives Of Women In Construction, Taylor M. Krueger
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of female leaders in the U.S. construction industry. A narrative method and methodology was used incorporating Mezirow’s (1978) transformative learning, Super’s (1957) career development, and Cooperrider et al. 's (2008) appreciative inquiry theories. The primary research question: How do women currently leading at their respective construction firms make meaning of their leadership development experiences? Eight interpretations emerged. First, leadership development experiences occur in non-formal settings, since childhood, and rarely follow a linear path. Second, company culture or the perspective and bias of upper management strongly dictate the opportunities and occurrences of female employment, …
The Legal Crisis Within The Climate Crisis, Mark P. Nevitt
The Legal Crisis Within The Climate Crisis, Mark P. Nevitt
Faculty Articles
Climate change creates a difficult choice for property owners and governmental officials alike: Should they invest in costly climate adaptation measures or retreat from climate-exposed areas? Either decision is fraught with legal uncertainty, running headfirst into antiquated legal doctrines designed for a more stable world. Climate impacts to the coastline are forcing policymakers to consider four adaptation tools: (1) resisting climate impacts by building sea walls and armoring the shoreline; (2) accommodating those impacts by elevating existing structures; (3) managed retreat such as systematically and preemptively moving people out of harm’s way; and (4) reactively moving people to new locations …
Corporate Law As Decolonization, Martin W. Sybblis
Corporate Law As Decolonization, Martin W. Sybblis
Faculty Articles
After centuries of colonial subordination, Black and Brown former colonies are still fighting to achieve the fruits of decolonization. The traditional theory is that former colonies will emerge from the colonial period with the legal mandate and international recognition needed to chart their own futures. But, for those Black and Brown British colonies that achieved political independence, it became clear that, without economic strength to care for their societies, legal separation could not deliver on its promise of freedom from subordination. This Article argues that investments in corporate law innovations by some jurisdictions, such as Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, …
Don't Kill The Baby! The Case For Ai In Arbitration, Michael J. Broyde, Yiyang Mei
Don't Kill The Baby! The Case For Ai In Arbitration, Michael J. Broyde, Yiyang Mei
Faculty Articles
Since the introduction of Generative AI (GenAI) in 2022, its ability to simulate human intelligence and generate content has sparked both enthusiasm and concern. While much of the criticism focuses on AI’s potential to perpetuate bias, create emotional dissonance, displace jobs, and raise ethical questions, these concerns often overlook the practical benefits of AI, particularly in legal contexts. This article examines the integration of AI into arbitration, arguing that the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) allows parties to contractually choose AI-driven arbitration, despite traditional reservations.
This article makes three key contributions: (1) It shifts the focus from debates over AI’s personhood …
Cultivating Attentiveness To Law In India Through Legal Anthropology, Deepa Das Acevedo, Jahnavi Chamarthi
Cultivating Attentiveness To Law In India Through Legal Anthropology, Deepa Das Acevedo, Jahnavi Chamarthi
Faculty Articles
This Article reviews and analyses scholarship at the intersection of anthropology and law. The first half of the Article provides context for understanding the boundaries, animating concerns, and tensions that have characterised the anthropology of law as an area of interdisciplinary inquiry. We focus especially on the subdiscipline’s Anglo-American history and show how a promising early period of engagement dissipated as both anthropologists and legal scholars lost enthusiasm for each others’ insights and methods. Then, we expand our analysis outward. Because legal anthropology belongs within, and is increasingly attentive to, the broader field of law and society scholarship, we explore …
Affects Of Air: A More-Than-Human Study Of Atmospheres And Sustainable Development In Bang Kachao, Leonie Hueppe
Affects Of Air: A More-Than-Human Study Of Atmospheres And Sustainable Development In Bang Kachao, Leonie Hueppe
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper investigates urban air as an agentic force shaping the relationship between Bangkok and Bang Kachao, its designated "green lung." Traditional sustainable development frameworks often overlook air's dynamic role, treating it as a passive environmental component rather than an active participant in urban ecologies. Drawing on ethnographic research in Bang Kachao, this study argues that an affective, more-than-human analysis of urban air provides crucial insights for rethinking sustainable urban development beyond anthropocentric paradigms. Employing an urban assemblage approach and the concept of affective atmospheres, the paper explores how the materializations of urban air — specifically heat, wind, and pollution …

The Effect Of Multimedia Information About Computer-Assisted And Freehand Dental Implant Surgery On Patients’ Knowledge, Anxiety, And Decision-Making, Veerawit Lukkanasomboon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of multimedia and verbal information on patients' knowledge, anxiety, and decision-making regarding dental implant surgery, focusing on comparing computer-assisted and freehand techniques. This randomized controlled trial involved 100 patients divided into two groups: one receiving multimedia information (n=50) and the other receiving verbal information (n=50). Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires assessing patients' baseline information, knowledge, anxiety, and decision-making before and after receiving information about dental implant surgery techniques. Results showed significant increases in knowledge scores for both groups, with the multimedia group improving from 1.96 to 3.90 (p<0.001) and the verbal group from 2.0 to 3.98 (p<0.001). Anxiety levels decreased significantly in both groups, with reductions from 12.76 to 11.48 (p=0.001) in the multimedia group and from 13.92 to 12.16 (p<0.001) in the verbal group. The proportion of patients who decided to proceed with dental implant surgery increased from 70% to 78% in the multimedia group and from 54% to 66% in the verbal group. After receiving the information, more patients in both groups opted for computer-assisted implant surgery, though treatment costs remained a significant concern for some, leading to declines in surgery acceptance. Despite these findings, no significant differences were observed between the multimedia and verbal groups regarding knowledge improvements, anxiety reduction, or decision-making. In conclusion, multimedia and verbal information effectively enhanced patient knowledge and reduced anxiety about dental implant surgery, and both methods may influence patients' decisions regarding their preferred implant technique, with no significant differences between the two methods.
