Financial Autonomy And Happiness In College Students: Can They Coexist?, Jordyn Gerwig Jan 2024

Financial Autonomy And Happiness In College Students: Can They Coexist?, Jordyn Gerwig

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Prior research and theory suggest that happiness is often associated with charitable expenses and feelings of autonomy. The present research examines how autonomy influences the happiness experiences of participants when spending money either charitably or on themselves. Participants completed the research online in an hour setting. Participants were asked to imagine situations where they have the ability to spend money freely, or where they first must seek advice or consult before making spending decisions. For half of each of these participants, they were directed to consider spending money on themselves, whereas the other participants were directed to consider spending money …

Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi Jan 2024

Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi

Playwriting (MFA) Theses

Girls’ Studies is a relatively new academic field characterized by its focus on the complexity of girlhood experiences and understanding girl as a unique social identity separate from the notion of future women. In bringing Girls' Studies theory into the work of theatre scholarship and new play development, I present a framework for the interdisciplinary field of Girls' Theatre Studies. Chapter One is an exploration of girlhood presentations in contemporary theatre through a postfeminist lens. Examining the theatrical manifestations of the "female victim-hero” in contemporary presentations of girlhood, I argue that girl audiences are able to feel with and through …

Investigating The Use Of Serious Games For Cancer Control Among Children And Adolescents: Scoping Review, Sunghak Kim, Ebling Library, Olufunmilola Abraham

Pharmacy Practice and Science Faculty Publications

Background: Effective health care services that meet the diverse needs of children and adolescents with cancer are required to alleviate their physical, psychological, and social challenges and improve their quality of life. Previous studies showed that serious games help promote people’s health. However, the potential for serious games to be used for successful cancer control for children and adolescents has received less attention.

Objective: This scoping review aimed to map the use of serious games in cancer prevention and cancer care for children and adolescents, and provide future directions for serious games’ development and implementation within the context of cancer …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of 13 Going On 30, Brynn Olverson Jan 2024

A Rhetorical Analysis Of 13 Going On 30, Brynn Olverson

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

The film 13 Going on 30 is an iconic and nostalgic film for many, but more specifically for young women emerging into adulthood. This film is best classified as a coming-of-age film. Thirteen-year-old Jenna goes through the process of turning thirteen years old and emerging into middle school. Jenna craves to be accepted by the cool girls and is blinded by the idea of popularity which in turn ruins her lifelong friendship with her neighbor and best friend Matt. Jenna’s life was turned upside down when she woke up thirty years old, living in her thirty-year-old body, and working her …

Analysis Of Current Treatment In Addressing Head-Directed Self-Injurious Behavior, Reid Wieczorek Jan 2024

Analysis Of Current Treatment In Addressing Head-Directed Self-Injurious Behavior, Reid Wieczorek

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

The many negative effects of brain damage have been well studied, and some populations are at a higher risk for this type of injury, such as athletes and soldiers. In response, research has led to the development of increased head protection solutions, such as helmets. However, this is not the case for all at-risk populations of head trauma, specifically individuals who engage in headdirected self-injurious behavior. This study was conducted to assess the ways in which BCBAs treat clients who engage in this behavior. The results yielded information on some key client demographics and different treatment strategies used to intervene …

Where Does The Church Stand In Today’S Mental Health Landscape?, Noah T. Mursu Jan 2024

Where Does The Church Stand In Today’S Mental Health Landscape?, Noah T. Mursu

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Religious involvement in care for those living with mental illness has been going on for centuries, and perspectives on it have changed throughout the years. This literature review evaluates the place of religious groups, mainly Christian churches, in today's mental health situation by considering past and present involvement. It incorporates sources regarding different eras of mental hospital reform, modern perspectives of mental health clinicians and clergy, and the current gaps in mental health support among a variety of groups, including veterans, African Americans, and people in developing countries. This review then considers potential future involvement, especially considering how these gaps …

Can The Data Output Of Cyberrat Pass A “Turing Test”?, Danielle M. Seljeskog Jan 2024

Can The Data Output Of Cyberrat Pass A “Turing Test”?, Danielle M. Seljeskog

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

There are benefits from laboratory experiences, like increased student engagement (Ra’anon, 2005) and preparation for graduate school (McDonough, n.d.). Specifically, there are benefits from working in a live animal laboratory using operant chambers. It is not feasible for many universities to have live animal laboratories due to factors such as cost of animal care, maintenance, and ethical concerns, so many students have no laboratory experience. The current study sought to evaluate the CyberRat (Ray, 2019) software as an alternative to live rat laboratories. The variability of CyberRat was assessed via a Turing test, thus determining how realistic CyberRat is. To …

Better Choices, Better Health South Dakota: The Association Between Perceived Loneliness And Self-Reported Health Measures Among Older Adults, Mckensey Bultje

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

The current study examined how Better Choices, Better Health South Dakota (BCBH-SD) programs impact older adults’ perceived loneliness, self-reported health measures, functional status, and confidence in managing their chronic condition. Sixty percent of U.S. adults report having a chronic condition (CDC, 2022), and adults with chronic conditions report higher levels of loneliness, increasing one’s health problems, maladaptive coping skills, and a diminished sense of self (Christiansen et al., 2021; Hammond and Pullen, 2020). We compared outcome measures between and within the two groups at pre- and post-survey timepoints. Pre-survey and post-survey loneliness measures revealed a significant difference between the groups, …

Can God Truly Forget My Sins?: Christian Temporality And The Possibility Of Repentance, James E. Faulconer Jan 2024

Can God Truly Forget My Sins?: Christian Temporality And The Possibility Of Repentance, James E. Faulconer

BYU Studies

When we think about repentance, we face a conundrum. On one hand, we are promised new life. As Paul says, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Cor. 5:17). On the other hand, the repentant person remains the same person that he or she was. In the younger Alma’s case, he is the person who “had murdered many of [God’s] children, or rather led them away unto destruction” (Alma 36:14). How can Alma be both a new person and the person who led many …

It’S Not The End Of The World; It’S Just The Apocalypse: The Book Of Revelation In The Book Of Mormon, Nicholas J. Frederick, Joseph M. Spencer Jan 2024

It’S Not The End Of The World; It’S Just The Apocalypse: The Book Of Revelation In The Book Of Mormon, Nicholas J. Frederick, Joseph M. Spencer

BYU Studies

Among the Book of Mormon’s most remarkable characteristics is its consistent interaction with the Bible. The Bible haunts this book, showing up in subtle allusions and type scenes as well as direct quotations both short and long. Further, the Book of Mormon explicitly reflects on the Bible’s historical origins, canonical shape, and scriptural destiny. As has long been recognized, the Book of Mormon’s most sustained interest is in the book of Isaiah. But at least one other biblical focus deserves detailed notice because it has a place of some privilege in the Book of Mormon: the book of Revelation. Indeed, …

Conclusion Latter-Day Saints And Perfectionism, W. Justin Dyer Jan 2024

Conclusion Latter-Day Saints And Perfectionism, W. Justin Dyer

BYU Studies

This special issue on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and toxic perfectionism seems long overdue. Although there has been some research in the past, many misleading narratives about Latter-day Saints and perfectionism—narratives promoted by professionals and nonprofessionals alike—were pulled into that research vacuum. Prior to the research presented in this issue, there were no studies that revealed how Latter-day Saints compare in perfectionism to those of other religions and those of no religion, and there was no longitudinal research that provided evidence for the sources and consequences of perfectionism over time for Latter-day Saints. Without …

Wartime Art And Temporality In The Russian And Soviet Avant-Gardes, 1914–1928, Mechella Ignace Yezernitskaya Jan 2024

Wartime Art And Temporality In The Russian And Soviet Avant-Gardes, 1914–1928, Mechella Ignace Yezernitskaya

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the ruptured temporality of “wartime” in works by artists, poets, and filmmakers belonging to the Russian and Soviet avant-gardes between 1914 and 1928. Wartime, this study argues, shaped the aesthetics and temporality of canonical works from cubo-futurist illustrated books and collage painting to agitprop theatre and groundbreaking silent film produced in an era of industrialized warfare, revolutionary upheaval, and civil unrest. I reveal the ways in which manifest notions of time were challenged and dismantled in a myriad of artistic forms, styles, and concepts responding to the First World War.

Over five chapters, this dissertation examines the …

Structuring Extra-Classroom Pedagogical Partnership To Support Truth Telling For Equity And Inclusion: Recommendations For Practice, Alison Cook-Sather, Elena Marcovici Jan 2024

Structuring Extra-Classroom Pedagogical Partnership To Support Truth Telling For Equity And Inclusion: Recommendations For Practice, Alison Cook-Sather, Elena Marcovici

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Equity and inclusion efforts are undermined by individual and institutional inattention to the lived experiences of an increasingly diverse college student population. Extra-classroom, student–faculty/staff pedagogical partnerships can foster truth telling about and the development of practices that support diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice. In this practice brief, we offer recommendations for (1) developing pedagogical partnership projects and programs, (2) dedicating regular meetings to supporting student partners in sharing the truths of their lived experiences, (3) scaffolding faculty and staff partners’ listening to and acting on the truths student partners tell, and (4) sharing truths more widely.

On "Beginning" In Analysis, Jeremy Elkins Jan 2024

On "Beginning" In Analysis, Jeremy Elkins

Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

While we speak casually about the beginning of an analysis, we are also aware that there are different senses of beginning in the context of an analysis. Certain differences surrounding the nature of beginning reflect technical-theoretical debates within the field. But in addition and more broadly, the various senses of beginning represent different dimensions of our understanding and experience of analysis. In this essay, I explore some of these dimensions and consider the significance and challenges of “beginnings” throughout the course of analytic work.

Parental Resilience In Contexts Of Political Violence: A Systematic Scoping Review Of 45 Years Of Research, Cindy Sousa, Bree Akesson, Manahil Siddiqi

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Families suffer in particular ways during the violence and targeted deprivation of freedom and resources within wars, armed conflicts, and military occupations - all part of political violence (PV). While evidence is accumulating about the disproportionate impacts of PV on parents and children, we lack clear, globally-integrated understandings of how families suffer – and survive – PV. There is an urgent need to synthesize existing work to refine our understandings about parental experiences within PV – with particular attention to both how PV creates suffering for parents, and how parents strategize, caring for their families within the most horrendous of …

“Trying Your Best In That Moment With That Person”: Maintaining Feelings Of Efficacy And Relevance In The Therapeutic Relationship With Community Mental Health Clients Experiencing Psychosis, Carolyn Solo Jan 2024

“Trying Your Best In That Moment With That Person”: Maintaining Feelings Of Efficacy And Relevance In The Therapeutic Relationship With Community Mental Health Clients Experiencing Psychosis, Carolyn Solo

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Community mental health clients who experience psychosis, particularly Black and Latinx clients, are subject to numerous barriers to competent clinical care. The fundamental challenges of community mental health settings can be detrimental to clinicians’ belief that they can be effective while providing care to clients with psychosis in alignment with the common factors of therapeutic treatment and the principles of trauma-informed care. This dissertation proposes a grounded theory based on 16 participant interviews with community mental health clinicians in Philadelphia who have worked in outpatient settings with clients with psychosis. Using the frameworks of self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977), the common …

Exploring Racially Informed Factors And Assessing Their Impacts On The Working Conditions And Burnout Among Bicultural Asian Human Service Workers, Isabel Sangeun Lee Jan 2024

Exploring Racially Informed Factors And Assessing Their Impacts On The Working Conditions And Burnout Among Bicultural Asian Human Service Workers, Isabel Sangeun Lee

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The United States has undergone a significant increase in cultural diversity, with Asians being the fastest-growing immigrant group. Their population has almost doubled from 11.9 million in 2000 to 22.4 million in 2019, marking an 88% increase in less than two decades. Presently, Asians make up 6% of the total U.S. population and are estimated to grow to 46 million by 2060, representing over 10% of the U.S. population. Asians are often considered a model minority due to their higher educational and health status compared to other minority groups. However, they are still perceived as "perpetual foreigners" regardless of their …

Feeling Trapped: Exploring The Lived Psychosocial Experiences Of First-Generation College Students, Carmen Maria Moedano Jan 2024

Feeling Trapped: Exploring The Lived Psychosocial Experiences Of First-Generation College Students, Carmen Maria Moedano

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Limited research exists that examines the lived experiences of psychosocial stress among first-generation college students. I utilize a trauma informed conceptual framework using the acculturative stress model and concepts from collective trauma to describe how colleges can function as a microcosm of the real world and place first-generation college students at increased vulnerability on top of the normative developmental challenges of young adulthood. I conducted a qualitative research study using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) research design to gain insights from first-generation college students about their lived experiences related to psychosocial distress. This study included purposive sampling at one four-year …

“Enacting Something I Didn’T Believe In”: Clinician Experiences Of Dissonance Related To Power And Oppression In Community Mental Health, Maisy T. Hughes Jan 2024

“Enacting Something I Didn’T Believe In”: Clinician Experiences Of Dissonance Related To Power And Oppression In Community Mental Health, Maisy T. Hughes

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Systems of Community Mental Health (CMH) care often operate as apparatuses of oppression and social control over marginalized groups. Rooted in colonialism and racial capitalism, these systems have a history of causing harm in particular to Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) (Metzl, 2009; Wade, 1993; Szasz, 2009). Pressured to comply within neoliberal practice environments, clinicians are limited in their ability to resist enacting oppression, and experience dissonance—a state of tension arising from psychologically inconsistent cognitions (Harmon-Jones & Mills, 2019)—as they find themselves caught between anti-oppressive practice ideals, and what is required of them by their agencies. In this …

A Failure Or Success?: A Qualitative Analysis Of Post-Disaster Relocation Among Survivors Of 2010 Floods In Pakistan, Muhammad Siddique Akbar, Saeed Ahmad, Muhammad Rizwan Safdar, Farhan Navid Yousaf Jan 2024

A Failure Or Success?: A Qualitative Analysis Of Post-Disaster Relocation Among Survivors Of 2010 Floods In Pakistan, Muhammad Siddique Akbar, Saeed Ahmad, Muhammad Rizwan Safdar, Farhan Navid Yousaf

Sociology and Anthropology Student Research

In Pakistan, the enormous 2010 floods inflicted unprecedented destruction to 0.5 million houses in South Punjab. This study was conducted in Muzaffargarh, a district of the Punjab province of Pakistan, one of the worst affected areas during the 2010 floods. As an adaptation and disaster risk reduction measure, an International NGO in collaboration with the Government of the Punjab province constructed 1274 houses for flood-affected communities. The houses were allocated through a lottery method. Initially, the allottees moved to the new settlements for the sake of possession. However, over time, it was observed that many flood-affected individuals sold out or …

A Deep Learning Model For Early Diagnosis Of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus From Facial Images, Shourav Bikash Dey Jan 2024

A Deep Learning Model For Early Diagnosis Of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus From Facial Images, Shourav Bikash Dey

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) poses significant challenges due to its complex and varied symptoms making diagnosis extremely challenging and time consuming. Symptoms of SLE often mimics other autoimmune or physical conditions and around 5 million people worldwide suffers from this condition, as reported by the Lupus Foundation of America during their study in 2019. However, diagnosis is much more difficult in developing countries with backdated clinical technology and setup therefore, making it virtually unknown the exact number of SLE patient count worldwide. Among all the heterogeneous symptoms presented by SLE, Butterfly Malar Rash (BMR) is one of the symptoms that …

An Explainable Approach To Understanding Gender Stereotype Text, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2024

An Explainable Approach To Understanding Gender Stereotype Text, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference Papers

Gender Stereotypes refer to the widely held beliefs and assumptions about the typical traits, behaviours, and roles associated with a collective group of individuals of a particular gender in society. These typical beliefs about how people of a particular gender are described in text can cause harmful effects to individuals leading to unfair treatment. In this research, the aim is to identify the words and language constructs that can influence a text to be considered a gender stereotype. To do so, a transformer model with attention is fine-tuned for gender stereotype detection. Thereafter, words/language constructs used for the model's decision …

Behaviour Of Creditors And Involved Stakeholders In Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (Cirp) In India: An Economic Perspective, Hiteshkumar Thakkar, Pranay Agarwal, Randall K. Johnson

Faculty Works

IBC has long clarified its purpose of achieving efficiency in the resolution procedure along with the welfare of the stakeholders. In order to achieve it, the code introduced Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) as a group solution mechanism in insolvency cases. While there is a plethora of studies focusing on the procedural and substantive working of the process, its influence over the behaviour and conduct of the stakeholders and its impact on its success has been ignored. Through this study, the author aims to develop a comprehensive economic model to explain the impact of CIRP on the creditor’s behaviour and …

Innovation Originators, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim, Rafeel Wasif

Michigan Technology Law Review

Asian Americans are one of the most striking and undertheorized ethnic groups in the field of innovation. While a prolific ethnic group when it comes to being named as inventors on U.S. patents, very little has been written on this observation, perhaps because of previously limited datasets and unwieldy data analysis on ethnic backgrounds about patenting at the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Research on inventor diversity and ethnicity in innovation has begun to explore some ethnic groups, but a more holistic account should focus on one particular overlooked group. Recently, entrepreneurship studies concerning ethnicity have shown that …
