The Effect Of Background Colors And Associations On Perceived Attractiveness, Help-Seeking, And Helping Behavior, Zeina Y. Ghanem
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The objective of this study is to understand how background colors influence an individual's perception of another person's interpersonal attractiveness, along with how these factors affect an individual's social support giving and seeking behavior for each presented image. The study aims to explore the effects of color, attractiveness, color associations, and prosocial behaviors. Participants (N = 278) consented to take a 10-minute online survey. The background colors used were red and blue with varied saturation levels (light, medium, and dark) and a white control background. There were no significant effects of background colors and saturation lightness levels found for …

Mansoura Journal of Dentistry
Objective: To compare the accuracy between complete denture impressions made on digitally constructed and conventionally constructed custom trays with two impression materials.
Materials and Methods: Eight completely edentulous patients were selected; intra oral scanning was done for all patients to record digital impression and saved in standard tessellation language. The scanned data was imported to 3D printer to fabricate digital cast and was imported to custom tray design software to design the special tray. The printed cast was duplicated to fabricate a visible light cured acrylic resin tray. All patients received 8 trays (4 for each arch). Two impression materials …
Instructional Practices To Foster The Development Of Autonomy: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of The Resident Experience, Rachelle Musgrave Aker
Instructional Practices To Foster The Development Of Autonomy: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of The Resident Experience, Rachelle Musgrave Aker
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
A growing concern in graduate medical education (GME), research indicates that some graduating residents are unprepared to enter unsupervised practice. The aim of this qualitative phenomenological study is to illuminate the resident experience surrounding the development of autonomy in clinical decision making relative to teaching practices. Research questions include: (1) What is the dual role of learner/teacher like for residents as they attend to their own and others’ development of autonomy in clinical reasoning and decision making? (2) Which teaching methods do they commonly experience as the learner and practice as the teacher relative to this development, and which methods …

Understanding The Construction Workforce Needs Of The Future: Technology, Skills, Diversity, Bassam Ramadan
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
The U.S. construction industry stands at a crossroads. The looming age cliff is about to present its most serious challenges yet, coinciding with a shortage of qualified skilled professionals. As the demands of the construction industry continue to grow, it continues to lack the manpower to meet those demands. In order to meet the rising demands of construction needs in the near future, the construction industry needs to focus on improving workforce performance and productivity, and increasing the size of the construction labor force. Existing research highlights the importance of technological adoption and workforce skills, and that gender and ethnic …
Playing Changes: Music As Mediator Between Japanese And Black Americans, E Taylor Atkins
Playing Changes: Music As Mediator Between Japanese And Black Americans, E Taylor Atkins
Faculty Books & Book Chapters
Since the mid-twentieth century, music has played a central role in encounters and interactions between the people of Japan and those of African descent. It proved far more effective for pro- moting interracial dialogue and understanding than efforts in the early 1900s to foster an alliance against white supremacy and imperialism. This essay unpacks the ways that encounters with Black music transformed Japanese musicking and generated knowledge and empathy for people of African descent among Japanese. Personal interactions between Black and Japanese musicians constituted a process of “grassroots globalization” that circumvented the dominance of American mass media in representing African …
Somewhere In-Between: My Evolving Understanding Of Wilderness, Sebastian J. Driver
Somewhere In-Between: My Evolving Understanding Of Wilderness, Sebastian J. Driver
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Wilderness has many definitions and is a concept that means something different to everyone. According to the Wilderness Act of 1964, "Wilderness is an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." In recent years, the definition of wilderness is under debate as it fails to excludes the indigenous perspective. Due to the exclusion of Native Americans some have called for the removal of the word wilderness altogether. However, I propose that instead of removing the word altogether that we can redefine it to make …

Edward S. Rogers, The Lanham Act, And The Common Law, Jessica Litman
Book Chapters
This book chapter is a deep dive into the story of Edward Sidney Rogers's authorship of the legislation that became the Lanham Act. Because Rogers believed that Congress lacked the power to alter the substantive law of trademark and unfair competition, he crafted draft legislation that focused on registration and other procedural details rather than substantive rights and defenses. He sought to advance two incompatible goals: he hoped to preserve the robust common law of unfair competition while requiring, or at least encouraging, all trademark owners to register their marks. Both the supporters and the opponents of the bills that …

How To Believe In Immortality, Carol Zaleski
How To Believe In Immortality, Carol Zaleski
Religion: Faculty Publications
All the cards seem to be stacked against belief in immortality. Nonetheless, the resources of particular religious traditions may avail where generic philosophical solutions fall short. With attention to the boredom and narcissism critiques, intimations of deathlessness in Śāntideva’s radical altruism, and recent Christian debates on the soul and the intermediate state, I propose two criteria for a coherent religion-specific belief in immortality: (1) the belief is supported by a fully realized religious tradition, (2) the belief satisfies the demand for self-transcendence as well as for self-preservation. Where self-transcendence and self-preservation are kept in balance, and where the whole idea …

This paper explores the possibilities to develop students' lifelong learning (LLL) competencies via supporting their personal development process (PDP) in engineering education. Despite the recognized importance of LLL, its embedment in learning outcomes remains limited. A survey revealed that both engineering students and educators value LLL competencies, but perceive them to be taught and evaluated only to a limited extent. This paper introduces a PDP model to support educators in fostering students' LLL competencies. The model, developed through literature review and educators' input, includes (1) a matrix with various interventions, such as e-portfolios, reflective writing, and student-centred teaching, categorised by …
New Rules For A New Era: Regulating Artificial Intelligence In The Legal Field, Hunter Cyran
New Rules For A New Era: Regulating Artificial Intelligence In The Legal Field, Hunter Cyran
Journal of Law, Technology, & the Internet
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to evolve at a rapid pace, many industries have already started integrating new technologies to reduce costs and labor. While this is practical for some industries, the legal industry should be cautious before fully integrating AI. Some legal-service providers are already developing and offering new AI products. But the legal industry must approach these new products with some skepticism. While AI may eventually bring positive changes to the legal industry, AI currently has many flaws. This can create negative unintended consequences for attorneys and judges that are unaware of these flaws. Further, AI is not …

Psychological And Psychosocial Effects Of Contemplative Practices In The Athletic Population: A Systematic Review, Victoria Baker
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Mental health concerns in athletes are becoming a primary focus for institutions, companies, coaches, and more. An athlete carries an abundant load of stressors due to their lifestyle. The stressors can negatively impact an athlete by producing anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other mental health issues. Previous studies have found a connection between the use of contemplative practices on psychological and psychosocial effects in athletes, creating an opportunity to evaluate the research of contemplative practices in the athletic population. A systematic review was conducted using nine electronic databases. Seven studies were included in this review, each assessing how contemplative practices affect …

Neuroticism And Rumination As Mechanisms By Which Adverse Childhood Experiences Increase Vulnerability To Depression In College Students, Christopher Popielarz
Neuroticism And Rumination As Mechanisms By Which Adverse Childhood Experiences Increase Vulnerability To Depression In College Students, Christopher Popielarz
West Chester University Master’s Theses
There is a high prevalence of depression among college students, and the consequences of untreated depression negatively impact those students’ academic and life outcomes. The following study analyzes the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the development of depression in college years as potentially mediated by neuroticism and rumination factors. The purpose of this research is to fill a gap in the current literature to determine whether neuroticism and rumination act together as mechanisms in conferring depression in college students following ACEs. Data from four questionnaires administered to undergraduate students at West Chester University (n = 127, 55.5% female, …
