Neural Population Dynamics Underlying Encoding Of Time In The Cortico-Striatal Circuit, Francisca Martínez Traub Jan 2024

Neural Population Dynamics Underlying Encoding Of Time In The Cortico-Striatal Circuit, Francisca Martínez Traub

Student Theses and Dissertations

Interval timing, the ability to accurately measure elapsed time between events, is critical for generating appropriate behavioral responses. Research conducted over the past decades has implicated the cortico-striatal-thalamic loop in time encoding, suggesting that the cortex utilizes high-dimensional dynamics to represent time. The dorsal lateral region of the striatum (d1St) is a key structure involved in interval timing, where neurons exhibit dynamic firing rate patterns that encode elapsed time, enabling animals to make perceptual judgments about time intervals. However, it is unlikely that this striatal activity is self-generated, pointing towards cortical afferent inputs as the driving force behind it. This thesis aims …

Cellular And Circuit Consequences Of A Genetic Locus For Attention, Zachary Gershon Jan 2024

Cellular And Circuit Consequences Of A Genetic Locus For Attention, Zachary Gershon

Student Theses and Dissertations

Animals are constantly bombarded by any number of sensory inputs but have a limited capacity with which to process them. A mechanism for filtering, prioritizing, and directing mental assets is required to prevent sensory overload, enable meaningful comprehension, and allow for further action. Attention is the process of directing cognitive resources toward specific stimuli, which can be dispensed in a top-down manner to carry out higher-order cognitive functions. However, despite extensive and careful study at the molecular, cellular, and, circuit scales, unifying principles have been challenging to elicit. In this thesis, I aimed to provide a new perspective by taking …

Anterior Cingulate Function Across Multiple-Time Scales Shapes Learning And Memory, Josue Manuel Regalado Jan 2024

Anterior Cingulate Function Across Multiple-Time Scales Shapes Learning And Memory, Josue Manuel Regalado

Student Theses and Dissertations

We are constantly learning from our everyday experiences about the people we are with, the things we do,where we are, and how we feel. If deemed significant enough,we may choose to remember what we learn for the rest of our lives. For my doctoral work, I studied how a part of the neocortex, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC),has critical functions across multiple time-scales,from minutes to days-long learning,to weeks-long memory consolidation. The prefrontal cortex, and particularly the ACC portion, is known to be important for goal-directed learning, especially as the relationship between our actions (including effort) and their outcomes (including value) has to …

Towards A Better Understanding Of Facial Movements: Computational Models For Perception, Characterization, And Neural Production, Yanis Tazi Jan 2024

Towards A Better Understanding Of Facial Movements: Computational Models For Perception, Characterization, And Neural Production, Yanis Tazi

Student Theses and Dissertations

Facial movements are the primary medium for non-verbal communication and involve a complex orchestration of muscles controlled by the brain. The ability to interpret and produce these movements enables the expression of a wide range of emotions and social cues, all essential for social interactions. Despite their significance, the neural mechanisms governing facial movements remain poorly understood, hindered by the complexity of muscle coordination and the limitations of traditional, subjective, and labor-intensive analysis methods. To objectively understand facial motor control, this research adopts a three-pronged approach: 1) Developing and interpreting computational models within a novel multi-task training framework to simultaneously …

BACKGROUND: Shifting organizational priorities can negatively affect the sustainment of innovations in community settings. Shifting priorities can present barriers to conducting clinical research in schools if a misalignment occurs between school district priorities and the aims of the study. Often this misalignment occurs due to a shift during the period between when the study is submitted for funding and when research activities begin. Participatory research approaches can be employed to restore alignment between study processes and school district priorities. The purpose of the study is to describe data from a shared process with district partners. The shared process resulted in …

Integrating Higher Order Fear-Based Psychopathology And Rdoc’S Acute Threat Subconstruct, Travis Cole Jan 2024

Integrating Higher Order Fear-Based Psychopathology And Rdoc’S Acute Threat Subconstruct, Travis Cole

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Fear-based psychopathology consistently pushes the categorical boundaries established by current diagnostic systems such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition text revision. While classified by their differing phenotypic symptoms, physiological processes such as fear potentiated startle (FPS) and fear load are common, well-established underlying mechanisms of fear-based psychopathology and represent a prominent target for intervention. The shared mechanisms and symptom overlap among fear-based disorders lend evidence to the examination of symptoms based on a dimensional classification system. One such system, the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) is a quantitative, bottom-up approach to mental illness classification that …

Childhood Betrayal Trauma And Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration And Victimization: The Role Of Attachment Insecurity And Affective Instability, Emma Shaughnessy Jan 2024

Childhood Betrayal Trauma And Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration And Victimization: The Role Of Attachment Insecurity And Affective Instability, Emma Shaughnessy

Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the joint roles of attachment (anxiety and avoidance) and affective instability in the association between childhood betrayal trauma and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and victimization severity. Two major societal concerns are IPV and childhood maltreatment. Childhood betrayal trauma is a particularly damaging trauma perpetrated by someone the child trusts and depends upon (e.g., parents). Childhood betrayal trauma has been associated with an increased risk of later IPV, both victimization (e.g., Babcock & DePrince, 2013) and perpetration (e.g., Linder & Collins, 2005; Zurbriggen et al., 2010). Childhood betrayal trauma also impairs the development of a secure …

Honor, Violence, And Recovery: The Stripping Of Female Agency During The Partition Of India, Anna K. Poole, Ryan Ronnenberg

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1943, the partition of India sent thousands of people on a perilous journey over geographical and religious lines. While this time period was marked by heartache for all, women were specifically affected, as societal ideals made them targets for brutality, kidnapping, and forced conversion. This paper analyzes the treatment of women during partition and effects of recovery efforts which took place after the year 1943. By utilizing firsthand accounts, interviews, and the works of other historians on this time period, it posits that recovery became an extension of maltreatment that reinforced the patriarchal ideals that made women victims to …

A Triage And Case Management Approach To Membership Management Prioritizing Soul Treatment, Dwayne K. Jones Jan 2024

A Triage And Case Management Approach To Membership Management Prioritizing Soul Treatment, Dwayne K. Jones

Doctor of Ministry

Many individuals and families feel disillusioned by churches failing to address their emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. With limited research demonstrating how the needs of members are prioritized, the research we have done has shown triage is critical in evaluating the priority of treatment needs in life-saving matters. The question this dissertation addresses is if there is a triage and case management approach that can set a better course for prioritizing treatment and healing for an individual or family seeking restoration when joining the church. It aims to assess how this approach can target critical needs beyond regular church activities …

Exploring The Effects Of Art Therapy Interventions On Self-Evaluations Of Food Addiction: A Randomized Control Study, Dawn Fiacco

Art Therapy | Doctoral Dissertations

Processed sugar is highly addictive and associated with chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Often, people know that eating processed sugar has negative health consequences but continue to do so, possibly for emotional reasons. The gap between knowledge and behavior makes treating eating issues difficult. Art therapy is a nonverbal modality and could possibly circumvent usual rationalizations, making it an effective way to bridge the cognitive and emotional aspects of problematic eating. This randomized control, mixed methods study was conducted to examine whether a 7-week art directive program could help people with self-identified problematic …

Intuition And Insight In Art Therapy, Samantha Mach Jan 2024

Intuition And Insight In Art Therapy, Samantha Mach

Art Therapy | Doctoral Dissertations

The main goal of this research is to explore the unconscious phenomena of Intuition and Insight in art therapy. I define Intuition as knowledge that has been there all along and Insight as an inner sense of knowing and a space of no-thought. It is my belief that these unconscious processes lay at the heart of art and art-making and may therefore strengthen the therapeutic process. In order to investigate this hypothesis, I turned to the phenomenological analysis of qualitative interviews and found that seven themes emerged from the data collected: Prologue, Untethered, Interrelatedness, Deliverance, Concede, Divulge, Art as Allied, …

Peer-Led Mental Health Services On College Campuses: A Scoping Review, Anadja Tamofo Jan 2024

Peer-Led Mental Health Services On College Campuses: A Scoping Review, Anadja Tamofo

Social Work Theses - Archive

This scoping review explores peer-led mental health services on college campuses, focusing on virtual mental well-being support. It examines the implementation, effectiveness, and outcomes of these interventions, highlighting the pivotal role of peer supporters. The review identifies three key themes: the importance of structured implementation, the effectiveness of peer-led interventions in reducing stigma and improving outcomes, and the psychosocial benefits and challenges faced by peer supporters. Significant gaps remain in understanding how to train and support peer supporters effectively, especially in virtual environments. Addressing these gaps can enhance program sustainability, improve student well-being, and foster supportive campus environments.
