Empowering Voices: Perspectives And Experiences Of Latino And Black Men In Minority Serving Institutions’ Male Success Initiatives, Reginaldo Robles Jan 2024

Empowering Voices: Perspectives And Experiences Of Latino And Black Men In Minority Serving Institutions’ Male Success Initiatives, Reginaldo Robles

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative dissertation investigates the experiences of men of color participating in Male Success Initiatives (MSIs) and examines the impact these initiatives have on their undergraduate experiences. Central to the study are two main research questions: How do MSIs influence and shape the experiences of men of color participants? And, how does participation in MSIs support or enhance their development in academics, leadership, and personal growth? This study is grounded in Yosso’s (2005) Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) model, which explored how various forms of capital—Aspirational, Familial, Linguistic, Navigational, Resistant, and Social—are utilized by participants to successfully navigate their college experiences. …

Perma+4 Building Blocks Of Well-Being: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Mechanisms & Conditions That Enable The Subjective Well-Being Of Workers, Victoria Cabrera

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the challenges many workers face regarding their well-being. Workers continue to report high levels of work-related stress and burnout and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic heightened the importance of this issue as declines in well-being were observed on a global scale. In 2022, the issue of worker well-being was brought to the forefront of public awareness when the U.S. Surgeon General raised the well-being and mental health of workers as an urgent public health priority. The critical need to better support worker well-being is further supported by research that …

Success-Oriented Corporate Accelerator Model: Mechanisms And Conditions That Amplify A Firm's Innovation Impacts, Felipe Eduardo Negritto

CGU Theses & Dissertations

My dissertation focuses on the Corporate Accelerator (CA) as a firm's organizational artifact that, configured correctly and with the accompanying enabling conditions, can significantly contribute to enhancing a firm’s long-term innovative capability. Using a Critical Realist approach with a mixed-methodology, I describe seven CA mechanisms, four in detail, that emerge from my data collection, from 13 large organizations across 3 continents, as generators of innovative results. I also describe more than 60 new micro foundations that will bolster existing firm dynamic capabilities to enable the amplification of the CA’s innovation benefits. The Full Stack CA emerges as the CA type …

Identity Complexity, Uncertainty, And Belongingness: Understanding The Appeal Of Extremist Groups, Michelle Blaya Burgo Jan 2024

Identity Complexity, Uncertainty, And Belongingness: Understanding The Appeal Of Extremist Groups, Michelle Blaya Burgo

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The exact factors that motivate people to join a radical group are not agreed upon in the literature. Incorporating social identity theory and uncertainty-identity theory, past studies in social psychology have investigated factors influencing individuals' involvement in such groups from different perspectives. However, the effects of uncertainty combined with identity complexity on an individual's sympathy for radical groups have not yet been explored. In the present study (N = 332), two independent variables, social identity complexity and self-uncertainty, were manipulated to examine their effects on attitudes toward and willingness to join a radical group, the multi-item dependent variables. Results revealed …

Attitude Formation & Persuasion Via Reactance: No, You Can't – Yes, I Can!, Daniel Alfred Palafox Jan 2024

Attitude Formation & Persuasion Via Reactance: No, You Can't – Yes, I Can!, Daniel Alfred Palafox

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This study was designed to fill a significant gap in how psychological reactance theory (PRT; Brehm, 1966) is traditionally used in social psychological experiments. This study attempted to show that PRT can be used as a method to induce positive attitude formation. There is a need to understand how motivation to restore freedom (the driving force behind PRT) can be harnessed as a tool to persuade in a manner incongruent to typical persuasion techniques and form evaluations of attitude objects, and how the affective component of PRT can be used as a form of evaluative conditioning. The study consisted of …

It Is Not Only About Having Good Attitudes: Factor Exploration Of The Attitudes Toward Security Recommendations, Miguel A. Toro-Jarrin, Pilar Pazos, Miguel A. Padilla Jan 2024

It Is Not Only About Having Good Attitudes: Factor Exploration Of The Attitudes Toward Security Recommendations, Miguel A. Toro-Jarrin, Pilar Pazos, Miguel A. Padilla

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Numerous factors determine information security-related actions (IS-actions) in the workplace. Attitudes toward following security rules and recommendations and attitudes toward specific IS actions determine intentions associated with those actions. IS research has examined the role of the instrumental aspect of attitudes. However, authors argue that attitudes toward a behavioral object are a multidimensional construct. We examined the dimensionality of attitudes toward security recommendations, hypothesized its multidimensional nature, and developed a new scale [attitudes toward security recommendations (ASR scale)]. The results indicated the multidimensional nature of attitudes toward security recommendations supporting our hypothesis. The results revealed two dimensions corresponding to the …

Adopting The Benefit-Of-The Doubt Rule In Veterans' Affairs Adjudication That Congress Intended, Christopher L. Galarza Jan 2024

Adopting The Benefit-Of-The Doubt Rule In Veterans' Affairs Adjudication That Congress Intended, Christopher L. Galarza

American University Law Review

This Comment examines the Federal Circuit’s interpretation of 38 U.S.C § 5107(b), more commonly known as the “benefit-of-the-doubt” rule as it applies to the adjudication of claims by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The benefit-of-the-doubt rule is a unique standard of proof in American jurisprudence in that, by its own text, purports to instruct the Department of Veterans Affairs to give claimants the benefit of the doubt in situations where the available evidence does clearly support a case for benefits. This Comment proceeds by reviewing the history of veteran benefits adjudication in the United States and the regulatory history …

Algorithmic Financial Regulation: Limits Of Computing Complex Adaptive Systems, Shuping Li Jan 2024

Algorithmic Financial Regulation: Limits Of Computing Complex Adaptive Systems, Shuping Li

American University Business Law Review

This article examines the potential of and limits to the use of machine learning for financial regulation. Ideally, if we could fully understand the financial system and agree on long- and short-term regulatory goals, we would be able to write code that carries out the computation that extracts proper representations from the data and makes correct regulatory decisions. We cannot do this yet because of limited sources of data, the bias brought by human beings and algorithmic models, and the difficulty of improving uninterpretable models. Furthermore, since law is a combination of merits and facts, there are difficulties in establishing …

Henderson And The Objective Observer Standard: The Future Of Race-Conscious Standards Post-Students For Fair Admissions, Gabriela Dionisio Jan 2024

Henderson And The Objective Observer Standard: The Future Of Race-Conscious Standards Post-Students For Fair Admissions, Gabriela Dionisio

Seattle University Law Review

On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States decided Students for Fair Admissions v. President & Fellows of Harvard College, which struck down race-conscious admissions policies. Within just a year after its ruling, Students for Fair Admissions has already had a sweeping impact, reaching beyond higher education. Although the Supreme Court did not indicate whether Students for Fair Admissions applies to sectors beyond higher education, law firms, and other employers have already modified their diversity policies and initiatives, erasing race and company diversity considerations. Given those dramatic changes, there is growing fear that Students for Fair Admissions …

Same Crime, Different Time: Sentencing Disparities In The Deep South & A Path Forward Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Hailey M. Donovan Jan 2024

Same Crime, Different Time: Sentencing Disparities In The Deep South & A Path Forward Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Hailey M. Donovan

Seattle University Law Review

The United States has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world. The American obsession with crime and punishment can be tracked over the last half-century, as the nation’s incarceration rate has risen astronomically. Since 1970, the number of incarcerated people in the United States has increased more than sevenfold to over 2.3 million, outpacing both crime and population growth considerably. While the rise itself is undoubtedly bleak, a more troubling truth lies just below the surface. Not all states contribute equally to American mass incarceration. Rather, states have vastly different incarceration rates. Unlike at the federal level, …

The Redemption Of Eve: The Decameron As New Genesis, Brittany Asaro Jan 2024

The Redemption Of Eve: The Decameron As New Genesis, Brittany Asaro

Italian and Italian Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron (1349-51) has long been regarded as a secular celebration of humanity. Yet, his choice of title—a play on hexameron—frames his short story collection as a gloss on Genesis. In this essay, I argue that the author’s reevaluation of scripture is an essential part of his vision of a post-plague society in which gender roles have been redefined. Boccaccio challenges traditional interpretations of the biblical account of humanity’s creation and fall, in which Woman/Eve is primarily blamed for Original Sin and its consequences. He implies that such misogynistic readings have served to subjugate women, and thus offers an …

Correlation Of Social Media Use And Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression Among College Students, Christy Burns, Dylan Gunter, Jasmine Ivy, April Johnson, Ramona Turner Jan 2024

Correlation Of Social Media Use And Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression Among College Students, Christy Burns, Dylan Gunter, Jasmine Ivy, April Johnson, Ramona Turner

MSN Research Projects

There is a new epidemic on the rise affecting college students. Social media use in college students is correlated to increased symptoms of anxiety and depression (Lippold, 2020). Studies show that prolonged symptoms of anxiety and depression can lead to hopelessness, which may make adolescents more prone to committing suicide (Tartakovsky, 2022). The Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the second leading cause of death in young adults is suicide (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Therefore, the present study was conducted through a quantitative correlational research design using a survey to evaluate social media use …

The Statutory Assessment Of Children And Young People With Special Educational Needs: A Bourdieusian Analysis, Blanche Gibson Jan 2024

The Statutory Assessment Of Children And Young People With Special Educational Needs: A Bourdieusian Analysis, Blanche Gibson

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

Research since the Children and Families Act (2014) and the SEND Code of Practice 0-25 (DfE & DoH, 2015) has focused upon new processes for statutory assessment, the quality of Education, Health and Care plans and the success and/or failures of the bureaucratic systems put in place to administer these. This research uses the thinking tools of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930 - 2002), to consider how statutory assessment is perceived within the field of SEND. A conceptual framework, influenced by Bourdieu’s field theory (1984) and Crossley’s social movement fields (2003), is employed to examine participants responses to questions …

Emotional Expression Between Ceo And Chairperson As A Micro-Foundation Of Organizational Capabilities: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study, John Paul Stephens Jan 2024

Emotional Expression Between Ceo And Chairperson As A Micro-Foundation Of Organizational Capabilities: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study, John Paul Stephens

Faculty Scholarship

The work relationships between CEOs and Chairpersons are key to the functioning of the firm. This study uses survey and interview data to explore how these work relationships serve as a micro-foundation for an organization's communication climate. Survey data suggested that CEO-Chairperson relationships can be characterized by emotional carrying capacity (ECC; constructively expressing more positive and negative emotions). The survey-based model further demonstrated that CEOs and Chairpersons perceive their ECC to positively predict organizational communication climate and, in turn, knowledge creation capabilities. The latter, in turn, are positively associated with firm performance. CEO-Chairperson dyadic interview data supplemented the associations identified …

My wife has Alzheimer’s. That might not be the precise diagnosis, but her symptoms are practically textbook for it. On a seven-stage scale of the disease, she would be in the latter part of the 5th and early 6th Stage. I have been asked by a number of colleagues to write down what has been happening to Gerda; but up until now, it was too painful and personal to record. I also believed that so much useful information has been written and published that there was no need to add to the literature. But when Gerda said the words I …

Healthcare Workers' Perception Of Workplace Violence, Anna Decker, Rachael Flynn, Brandy Montgomery, Tyesha Pringle Jan 2024

Healthcare Workers' Perception Of Workplace Violence, Anna Decker, Rachael Flynn, Brandy Montgomery, Tyesha Pringle

MSN Research Projects

Healthcare workers are increasingly becoming victims of workplace violence and a loss of personal resources due to poor awareness, training, and intervention regarding workplace violence. According to research completed by Rajabi et al. (2020), healthcare workers are estimated to experience workplace violence nearly sixteen times more than other professional groups of employees. This issue can lead to decreased attendance, job performance and satisfaction, and job retention significantly affecting patient care. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perception, preparedness, and effects of workplace violence among healthcare workers. The researchers conducted a quantitative, descriptive study utilizing a questionnaire that …
