Potential For Trauma In Public Libraries Experiencing Book Banning And Material Challenges, Jieun Yeon, Leah T. Dudak Jan 2024

Potential For Trauma In Public Libraries Experiencing Book Banning And Material Challenges, Jieun Yeon, Leah T. Dudak

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

Material challenges in public libraries are at an all time high while also possessing a huge political and emotional weight. As such, library workers are defending against book banning in larger numbers, and their very work is coming into public scrutiny and questioning. In such stressful times, the potential for trauma from the library workplace is higher and more charged. This paper lays the groundwork for how trauma and materials challenges have the potential to interact in the library workplace, especially for those from marginalized communities. It also proposes a trauma cycle for deeper understanding of trauma during material challenges, …

Why The General Trust Of Chinese People Is Higher Than That Of Japanese People?, Pingping Lin Jan 2024

Why The General Trust Of Chinese People Is Higher Than That Of Japanese People?, Pingping Lin

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Several major international comparative surveys (World Values Survey, East Asian Social Survey) have repeatedly shown that Chinese people report higher levels of general trust towards people than Japanese people. It has been pointed out that if Chinese people recall the people around them when answering the question “Most people can be trusted?”, this could explain their high general trust (Yoshino and Osaki, 2013), but there are no empirical studies yet. Therefore, in this study, we will compare general trust between Japan and China by focusing on “Who comes to mind in response”. A total of 318 Japanese and 476 Chinese …

Strands Of Repair: Textile Treasures As Sustainable Pathways To Reconnect With The Lost Past, Sareekah Agarwaal, Ruby Kashyap Sood Jan 2024

Strands Of Repair: Textile Treasures As Sustainable Pathways To Reconnect With The Lost Past, Sareekah Agarwaal, Ruby Kashyap Sood

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Textiles, fundamental to all human experiences, are meaning-laden objects that possess a remarkable ability to evoke emotions and memories, serving as powerful mnemonic devices.

Almost everyone experiences unplanned encounters with textiles in their lifetime and in different contexts. Hence, most every piece is loaded with personal, cultural, or historical data, fostering a deep emotional connection between the owner and the object. Consequently, these textiles are cared for, preserved, and often repurposed. But not much literature exists on how textiles and their stories can be used to augment the understanding of the identity of an individual, a group, a region, or …

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett Jan 2024

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Inhabiting Numbers: Polyphony as Woven Sound explores connections between vocal polyphony and textile practices, specifically weaving and spinning. Rather than consider music and weaving as separate from one another, the following paper presents the ways in which they are deeply intertwined and mutually constitutive forms of cultural expression. The technical modes of thinking produced through repetition inherent in both—particularly as practices utilizing complex mathematical structures—produce ways of thinking unique to each. Through practice, I suggest these technical modes of making transit across different materials and mediums—in both explicit and implicit ways. The music created through the interweaving of multiple voices …

Handwoven Drawings, Lynn Bennett Carpenter Jan 2024

Handwoven Drawings, Lynn Bennett Carpenter

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In my Handwoven Drawings series, I developed an innovative method that unifies drawing and weaving. I draw and paint on the surface of soft wood, hand cut the wood into thin strips, and then weave the painted strips back together on a floor loom. The Handwoven Drawings teeter between drawing and textile and beg categorization. The drawing on wood could be thought of as traditional cartoons that instead of guiding a tapestry become the textile itself. The horizontal cuts across the wood articulate lines of weft undulating across the work creating a new sensibility within a woven structure and a …

Draped In History: Unveiling Vijayanagar's Social Tapestry Through Lepakshi Portrayals, Ashima Gupta, Dimple Bahl, Vandana Bhandari

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Veerabhadra Temple in Lepakshi, Andhra Pradesh, India has some of the finest mural paintings created during the Vijayanagar Empire, one of South India’s most powerful dynasties in the 16th century. This paper will look at one of the frescoes depicting the costumes worn by the people during that time period. The artists generally recreate current trends and the world as they see around them. In Lepakshi, painters expressed a strong interest in depicting contemporary dresses, jewelry, hairdos, and so on, which mirrored not only the prevailing fashion trends of the time but also the socio-cultural fabric of the Vijayanagar …

A Smart Energy-Efficient Hybrid Gait Monitoring System, Elsa Joy Harris Jan 2024

A Smart Energy-Efficient Hybrid Gait Monitoring System, Elsa Joy Harris

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Triboelectric nanogenerators are devices that harvest mechanical energy from the environment and turn it into electricity. By coupling the effect of contact electrification and electrostatic induction between two materials that come into contact and then separate they can convert the irregular, low frequency, waste biomechanical energy of human motion into useful electrical energy to run small body-worn electronics. This has shown promising results in multiple applications such as self-powered motion and haptic sensing, self-charging micro-storage devices, neuromorphic computing, and designing batteryless circuits to power small wearables. This work will investigate a smart energy-efficient hybrid gait monitoring system that is powered …

Taking It To The Street: Designing Archival Walking Tours For Cultural Heritage Months, Catherine M. Fonseca

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This chapter discusses an archives-based walking tour piloted by a mid-size academic library as part of a campus-wide Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Drawing on materials from university archives, the event served to highlight Latin@/x historical points of interest across campus. The chapter examines the significance of identity-specific programming for distinct BIPOC groups, details aspects of program planning and implementation, and offers practical suggestions and considerations for librarians seeking to offer similar culturally affirming programming. While the following case study discusses a walking tour event primarily designed to support the needs of Latin@/x students, strategies shared can be applied to walking …

Felt: Leaning Into The Chaotic, Fafnir Adamites Jan 2024

Felt: Leaning Into The Chaotic, Fafnir Adamites

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This presentation is a reflection on felt as a chaos structure, an underdog and a queer material capable of offering a physical manifestation of exhilarating, transformative possibility. Images of artwork from my own studio practice will act as orientation points to examine the physical and the psychological. The physical exploration includes the intrinsic characteristics of wool as well as the material transformation of the wet felting process. The psychological aspects include opportunities to embrace intuitive, collaborative and expansive ways of making. Writing on feltmaking as it relates to the canon of textile scholarship will also be examined. Viewing felt through …

The Petticoat: Details Of A Forgotten Garment In Mexico City (1900–1910), Nallely Rangel Vázquez

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

During Porfirian government, Mexican society experienced a flourishing of the textile industry driven by state policies that encouraged both the rise of the national industry and foreign investment. This process was perceived from the daily life of the capital, through the windows of silk shops, shoe shops, warehouses and, above all, the imposing department store El Palacio de Hierro. One of the garments that was designed to fit at the waist and cover the legs was the petticoat, which was assumed to be a piece of female underwear. In this article, I am interested in unravelling details findings about this …

Do Asynchronous Video Lectures Improve Student Performance In Remote Learning Environments? Evidence From A Macroeconomics Course, Lane Boyte Chadwick, Steven J. Lee, Anand Krishnamoorthy Jan 2024

Do Asynchronous Video Lectures Improve Student Performance In Remote Learning Environments? Evidence From A Macroeconomics Course, Lane Boyte Chadwick, Steven J. Lee, Anand Krishnamoorthy

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

This paper investigates the impact of a pilot policy change that mandates asynchronous video lectures (embedded recorded lectures) on student performance in undergraduate online macroeconomics courses. The researchers employed time series regression analysis to assess whether there was a statistically significant difference in student performance before and after the introduction of recorded lectures. The findings reveal that recorded lectures significantly enhance student outcomes in these courses. These results have broader implications beyond the scope of the current study.

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah Jan 2024

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Academic clustering occurs when at least 25% of the student athletes on any given team have the same academic major. In and of itself, academic clustering is neither good nor bad, however there is the temptation for students to gravitate toward a major which is perceived to be easier, to seek to associate only with team members, or to enlist in majors which do not align with their career ambitions. Is it for flexibility and scheduling to choose an academic major to have the least impact on their sport? This study examined the athletic program at a Division II four-year …

Discovering Farmers’ Views Of On-Farm Precision Experimentation, Reagen G. Tibbs, Maria A. Boerngen Jan 2024

Discovering Farmers’ Views Of On-Farm Precision Experimentation, Reagen G. Tibbs, Maria A. Boerngen

Faculty Publications - Agriculture

Precision agriculture technologies (PATs) have revolutionized agriculture production and provide many benefits to farmers. Among these benefits is the ability to conduct experiments using PATs and collaborate with researchers in a process known as on-farm precision experimentation (OFPE). OFPE is a citizen-science approach that fosters relationships and knowledge-sharing to address challenges of mutual interest. While the literature on precision agriculture is extensive, little research has addressed farmers’ willingness to conduct OFPE with researchers. Interviews with 11 Illinois farmers revealed high adoption rates of PATs. Interest in collaborating with researchers to conduct OFPE was mixed, with farmers identifying clear channels of …

Design And Experimentation Of Novel Human Head Surrogate Models For Sensing Traumatic Brain Injury, Arthur T. Koster Jan 2024

Design And Experimentation Of Novel Human Head Surrogate Models For Sensing Traumatic Brain Injury, Arthur T. Koster

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Brain injury is a significant source of mortality in the US and has been an important area of research over the past century. The need to understand injury thresholds and pathology coupled with the difficulty of measuring relevant injury mechanisms in a living subject logically gives rise to the idea that researchers need to create head models for use in simulation and experimentation. This study focuses on understanding the effects of material properties, size, and shape on the dynamic response of a head model so that head models used in simulations and experiments can more accurately represent the real human …
