Comparing Cognitive Theories Of Learning Transfer To Advance Cybersecurity Instruction, Assessment, And Testing, Daniel T. Hickey Ph.D., Ronald J. Kantor
Comparing Cognitive Theories Of Learning Transfer To Advance Cybersecurity Instruction, Assessment, And Testing, Daniel T. Hickey Ph.D., Ronald J. Kantor
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The cybersecurity threat landscape evolves quickly, continually, and consequentially. This means that the transfer of cybersecurity learning is crucial. We compared how different recognized “cognitive” transfer theories might help explain and synergize three aspects of cybersecurity education. These include teaching and training in diverse settings, assessing learning formatively & summatively, and testing & measuring achievement, proficiency, & readiness. We excluded newer sociocultural theories and their implications for inclusion as we explore those theories elsewhere. We first summarized the history of cybersecurity education and proficiency standards considering transfer theories. We then explored each theory and reviewed the most relevant cybersecurity education …
Deliberate Practice In The Skill Of Evaluating Automatic Thoughts: A Multiple Case Study, Hanni Rizk
Deliberate Practice In The Skill Of Evaluating Automatic Thoughts: A Multiple Case Study, Hanni Rizk
Theses and Dissertations
Deliberate Practice is an emerging technique for competency-based education within psychotherapy training. In this multiple-case study, deliberate practice is evaluated for training the cognitive-behavioral therapeutic skill of evaluating automatic thoughts, also known as Socratic questioning. Students in a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program responded to an actress in a simulated automatic negative thought therapy scenario before and after participating in a deliberate practice workshop. The workshop consisted of an overview of Socratic questioning, roleplay, expert feedback, and behavioral rehearsal. Scenario roleplays before and after the workshop presented situations related to client "lovability" and "competence" providing an opportunity for the participants to …

The Role Of Spreading Depolarizations In Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries, Natalie J. Pinkowski
The Role Of Spreading Depolarizations In Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries, Natalie J. Pinkowski
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) often lead to acute symptoms like disorientation and discoordination, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Although most patients recover quickly from a single mTBI, repeated injuries can be debilitating. After an mTBI, a neurometabolic cascade produces metabolic burden and vulnerability. Spreading depolarizations (SDs) have been observed after mTBIs. Here we investigated SDs’ role in short-term motor behavioral deficits post-mTBI. We hypothesized that SDs contribute to the deficits, and exacerbated symptoms after repeated mTBIs. To test this, we used acute motor behavioral tests and long-term behavioral and cognitive tests after initiating SDs by mTBI, chemical, or …

Narrative Language Assessment And Intervention: Applications With Children With And Without Disabilities, Norah M. Almubark
Narrative Language Assessment And Intervention: Applications With Children With And Without Disabilities, Norah M. Almubark
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Narrative is the art of conveying a sequence of causally and temporally linked events through monologic telling. Various functions can be served through narratives including sharing experiences, expressing ideas, providing entertainment, and imparting cultural or social values. Narrative language represents an authentic type of language that is useful for assessment and intervention because it can be analyzed according to content and form. The ability to use complex narrative language and produce quality narratives is associated with long-term academic and social benefits (Uccelli et al., 2019; Suggate et al, 2018). Given this crucial link, narrative language is suitable for child language …

Making Way: A Methods Experiment With Arts-Based Embodied Postformal Autoethnography To Prepare For Research-As-Community Building With A Diverse Urban Elementary School, Kelly Elizabeth Bare
Theses & Dissertations
Using autoethnographic, arts-based, and embodied methods, this postformal dissertation study establishes the first of a two-part research-as-community-building template designed with racially and socioeconomically diverse school communities in mind. Imagined as a double helix in an echo of human DNA, it describes an arts-based, embodied self-study (Helix 1) as a prerequisite for later study of community (Helix 2, not yet complete) typified by mindful engagement across socially constructed lines of difference and attention to the potential building blocks of collaborative leadership across those same lines. As a prerequisite to community work, I explored my lifetime encounters with others of difference (Chang, …
Improving Breastfeeding Outcomes: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Self-Efficacy Intervention With Primiparous Mothers, Karen A. Mcqueen
Improving Breastfeeding Outcomes: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Self-Efficacy Intervention With Primiparous Mothers, Karen A. Mcqueen
Dissertations
Breastfeeding is recommended as the optimal source of nutrition for newborns for the first 6 months of life and beyond with the addition of complementary foods. While breastfeeding initiation rates have been increasing, duration rates remain a concern as many women prematurely discontinue due to difficulties encountered rather than maternal choice. In addition, there is a sizable gap between rates of exclusive breastfeeding and current recommendations. Targeting modifiable variables that may be amenable to intervention is one strategy to improve breastfeeding outcomes. One such modifiable variable is breastfeeding self-efficacy. Although research has clearly shown that breastfeeding self-efficacy is predictive of …

A Naturalistic Evaluation Of Mindfulness Training And Practice As Self-Care Resources For International Graduate Students In High-Stress Fields, Julie Laveglia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Drawing on Social Constructionism (Berger & Luckmann, 1966; Gergen, 2009), this naturalistic evaluation (Guba, 1987; Lincoln & Guba, 1985) describes the effectiveness of mindfulness training and practice as self-care resources for international graduate students in the high-stress field of healthcare. The purpose of the study was to examine and understand the experiences of international graduate students trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and analyze the ways that the training and practice shaped the wellbeing of the students. This evaluation also helped me, the administrator responsible for student affairs for this group of students, to better understand how they used the …

Nursing Professionals' Attitudes That May Impact Diagnostic Outcomes Among Patients With Disabilities, Louvisia Conley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
People with disabilities have been identified as representing the largest marginalized group worldwide. A negative attitude towards people with disabilities has been an extended paradigm in American society. Improving the treatment of people with disabilities has led to national policy and legislation changes. However, health inequities continue to be a significant issue faced by people with disabilities. Bourdieu's Theory of Practice provided the theoretical basis for this research. Using the Scale of Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons survey, this quantitative descriptive research aimed to examine factors that may impact attitudinal barriers among three groups, graduate nursing students, current practicing nurses, and …

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder. Normal red blood cells are round. In those with SCD, the red blood cells are crescent shaped. In the Unites States (US), more than 90% of those living with SCD are Black. We conducted three epidemiological studies related to the burden of common comorbidities in individuals with SCD, the relationship between SCD and chronic kidney disease, and the effects of historical racial housing policies on births with SCD. First, we evaluated the annual incidence and demographic associations of stroke, seizures, congestive heart failure, asthma, systemic hypertension, and diabetes mellitus in individuals …

Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Transition Shock In First-Semester Nursing Students, Christina Hillhouse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Nursing student attrition rates contribute to the current nursing staff shortages in the United States. With many nursing students leaving their program after the first semester, identifying potential causes and interventions to mitigate these causes is a priority. Students report uncertainty and anxiety, as well as the incongruence between expectations and reality of nursing programs which can lead to transition shock. By assessing the ability of the students to understand, use, and manage their emotions, educators may be able to plan interventions to increase student retention. A quantitative correlational study assessed students in the first-semester Health Assessment course using the …
Rhetorics Of Impurities: Exvangelicalism As Excavating And Encountering Purity, Karly Poyner-Smith
Rhetorics Of Impurities: Exvangelicalism As Excavating And Encountering Purity, Karly Poyner-Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores purity discourse through the lens of the ExVangelical movement. Using mixed methods, this inquiry employs critical qualitative research to examine how ExVangelicalism uses the roles of identification, place, and space to critique purity’s oppressive categorizations. In doing so, ExVangelicals represent a theoretical rhetoric of impurities in which purity is continuously excavated and encountered. Based on a queer feminist reading of ExVangelical texts, this dissertation presents three frameworks in which to reorient ExVangelicalism as a post-purity movement. First, through ExVangelicalism, purity is examined through rhetorics of identification, place, and space. Second, as a post-purity movement, ExVangelicals partake in …

This single-embedded case study seeks to understand how and why, if at all, the Connect STEM Mentoring Program develops career self- efficacy in career advancement for mid-level and senior-level female faculty members. The study investigates faculty members’ participation in …
Factors Associated With Youth’S Perceptions Of Parenting: The Role Of Social Ecological Assets, Anissa Garza
Factors Associated With Youth’S Perceptions Of Parenting: The Role Of Social Ecological Assets, Anissa Garza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Minimal research has examined factors that contribute to youth’s perceptions of maternal parenting practices. The current study included 263 mother-youth dyads. Mothers were aged 23-64 (Mage=36.42, SD=7.89, 82.9% Black) and youth were aged 8-17 (Mage=12.11, SD=2.77, 88.2% Black, 58.9% girls). A multivariate linear regression was used to examine how youth’s behavior problems and internal, peer, school, and community assets were related to their perceptions of positive and negative maternal parenting, while accounting for youth age, gender, socioeconomic status, and maternal adversity exposure. The model was significant (F(9, 236)= 7.24, p<.001, R2=.22) for positive parenting perceptions and for negative parenting perceptions (F(9, 236)=6.76, p<.001, R2=.21). Younger age, more internal assets, and more community assets were related to greater positive parenting perceptions, while more behavior problems and fewer community assets were related to more negative parenting perceptions. Findings could inform the development of family-focused, multisystemic interventions that enhance the mother-child relationship.

The Devil Is In The Details: An Analysis Of The Satanic Panic, Travis James Brooks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Satanic Panic was a period lasting from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s characterized by a series of modern-day witch trials. “Satan hunters,” emboldened by the rise of the New Right in 1980, persecuted hundreds of day care operators. Their actions propelled a Satanic conspiracy theory into the cultural mainstream and has had a lasting impact on conservative politics. This project explores how the Satanic Panic came to be, how it advanced and functioned, and how it ended. It also examines question and information often left out of Satanic Panic historiography, such as what Satanism actually is and the …

Use Of Restrictive Housing In The Juvenile Justice System, Caleb D. Purvis, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
In recent years, the term solitary confinement was replaced with restrictive housing (RH) as it had a less negative tone. However, the terms both represent the same process of isolating individuals in cells with nearly no contact with others. Restrictive housing has many negative effects, including, but not limited to deteriorating mental health and increased rates of recidivism. Such practices are not limited to the adult system as incarcerated youth are also subjected to various forms of restrictive housing (e.g., protective custody, disciplinary and administrative segregation). While those who oppose the use of RH call this cruel and unusual punishment, …

Preparing And Teaching Data Science Courses, Dale E. Parson
Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty
Preparing and teaching realistic data science courses requires labor-intensive preparation and course delivery. It is not enough to download data and push buttons on machine learning tools. First, there must be a human expert available in the problem domain to supply data and evaluate work. Without a human expert to provide information that is missing or incorrect in archived data, the tendency is to take the output of machine learning algorithms using potentially faulty data on faith. Second, any real-world data requires custom scripts for correcting invalid values, creating derived attributes, and formatting data for analysis. Then comes the analysis, …

Incarcerated Workers Will Be Heard: Protecting The Right To Unionize Prisoners Through Dignity, Samuel Richter
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
This Comment posits that incarcerated workers possess an inherent right to unionize pursuant to human dignity. Centering dignity in this discussion highlights the ways in which prisoners’ unions secure the economic and political conditions needed to express their autonomy and foster rehabilitation. By reviewing the historical successes and missteps of the incarcerated workers’ labor movement in the United States, this Comment demonstrates that an appreciation for dignity is crucial to prevent factional violence between incarcerated people on the one hand and the over-professionalization of prisoner organization on the other. Recognizing that unionization is a matter of dignity, not free speech …

ABSTRACT
Using critical race theory and Gloria Ladson-Billings' culturally relevant pedagogy as theoretical frameworks, this thematic narrative analysis study explored the epistemology and ontology of culturally relevant pedagogy by investigating the research question: How do Black novice teachers (years 1-5) become culturally relevant practitioners? The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with Black K-12 public school teachers in which the participants reflected on how their upbringing, cultural identities, K-12 experiences, and teacher preparation program/process impacts their readiness to practice culturally relevant pedagogy. Five themes emerged from the narrative analysis: 1) K-12 racialized trauma; 2) racialized awakening and awareness; 3) the sanctuary of …

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to study the effects of spirit assassination attempts and whether their influence is enduring throughout life and can be linked to my emotional, mental, and physical health. In 1987, the term spirit murdering was coined by Williams to describe the everyday encounters with racism and discrimination, which can evoke a profound sense of powerlessness, hopelessness, and sadness in Black people. I use the term spirit assassination attempts to describe the repeated, intentional words, body language, looks, and actions intended to remind Black people of their societal position intended to destroy hope, joy, and …

In 2019, a widely disseminated video of the arrest of a six-year-old girl in her Florida elementary school provoked outrage across the country. The footage shows the girl sobbing as an armed police officer in full uniform and bullet-proof vest handcuffs and leads her from the principal’s office to a waiting patrol car. Her crime was having a temper tantrum in class after a sleepless night. When it was revealed that another six-year-old was arrested at the same school by the same officer on the same day and for similar reasons, media pundits and the general public debated questions of …
