Reducing Severity Of Primary Dysmenorrhea With The Utilization Of Acupressure, Tatum N. Britton

Theses and Graduate Projects

Primary dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological condition associated with painful

cramps during menstruation in the absence of other diseases. It impacts large populations of women worldwide yet is often disregarded and inadequately treated. The ways in which women are treated for this condition often bring forth issues including overuse of medications, drug dependence, adverse reactions from medication use, and increased medical expenses. The utilization of non-pharmacological options has been shown to be effective in managing pain related to primary dysmenorrhea, including the complementary and integrative treatment of acupressure. Guided by Jean Watson’s Human Caring Science Theory, this scholarly DNP-FNP project …

Juvenile crime peaked in the 1990s and has been on a downward decline since that time. However, youth remain overly represented in various stages of the juvenile and criminal legal systems. This poster outlines known criminogenic and non-criminogenic risk factors that influence juvenile offending. These risk factors have been identified in decades of correctional research and are reflected within many validated risk assessment instruments. The most widely used actuarial risk assessments will be outlined to demonstrate their effectiveness in predicting future offending behavior in youth. Lastly, based on known factors, this poster offers primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and intervention …

Status Offending To Criminal Legal System Involvement, Ryan Deitering, April Terry Apr 2024

Status Offending To Criminal Legal System Involvement, Ryan Deitering, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Status offenses are behaviors that are not crimes but are prohibited by the law due to an individual’s status as a minor. If these behaviors were committed by an adult, they would not be deemed illegal. Examples include truancy, running away, and curfew violations. Research shows that girls, especially girls-of-color, are more likely to be adjudicated as status offenders. Status offenses result in youth being involved within the juvenile justice system. Research suggests that this pathway does not end in one’s youth; instead, these youth then enter the criminal legal system as adults. Labeling theory is one theoretical perspective that …

The Relationship Between Parenting Practices And Juvenile Delinquency, Megan E. Bechtold, April Terry Apr 2024

The Relationship Between Parenting Practices And Juvenile Delinquency, Megan E. Bechtold, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Delinquency may take on many definitions, but the most widely accepted definition is a minor crime committed by a young person, generally under the age of 18. Youth may also deal with legal trouble in response to status offending. These are behaviors that are age-based and would not be charged if committed by an adult. Examples include truancy, running away, drinking alcohol and using tobacco, and being incorrigible. Offending is a term that can be used to describe the actions of adults and youth, with definitions extending beyond just a “minor” crime (e.g., homicides and rapes). Many factors may contribute …

Exploring Strategies For Placement Stability Among Foster Care Children, Gabrielle Sewester Apr 2024

Exploring Strategies For Placement Stability Among Foster Care Children, Gabrielle Sewester

Dissertations

Children in foster care are considered a vulnerable population because of the maltreatment and abuse that previously occurred. In addition to the trauma resulting from previous abuse or neglect, children in foster care face ongoing exposure to trauma due to the lack of stability within the system. Instability in the foster care system is displayed by frequent changes in placement providers, multiple school changes, inconsistent mental and physical health treatment, prolonged permanency, and loss of connections with biological family members. The aim for this study is to fill the gap in the literature on foster parent’s experiences with successful placement …

Co-Designing With First-Generation Transfer Students, Randi Petrauskas Harris Apr 2024

Co-Designing With First-Generation Transfer Students, Randi Petrauskas Harris

Dissertations and Theses

Roughly 80% of community college students indicate that they intend to transfer to a four-year institution, 30% of those students eventually transfer, and 13% of those students persist to graduate with a baccalaureate degree. There has been previous research on transfer students and on first generation students, but the intersection of first-generation transfer students is under-reported. Prior research indicates that sense of belonging is an important factor in student persistence to graduation for transfer students. Higher education institutions, specifically four-year public institutions, are positioned to support first-generation transfer student sense of belonging by fostering a "transfer receptive culture." Recognizing that …

The Effect Of Skin Tone Inclusive Dermatology Education On Diagnostic Accuracy And Self-Confidence In Graduate Nursing Students, Kaylyn Bourne, Laura Gray

DNP Projects

Abstract

BACKGROUND: People with skin of color face worse health outcomes than their light-skinned peers. According to the literature, graduate nursing programs lack skin tone inclusive curricular content (Shue-McGuffin & Powers, 2022). This contributes to disproportionate racial and ethnic health disparities. Skin tone inclusive online dermatology modules have been shown to improve diagnostic accuracy and self-confidence among medical students and residents in primary care specialties (Trinh et al., 2021; Salava & Salmela, 2022; Wang et al., 2020). Similar models may be an effective approach for graduate nursing students as they prepare to evaluate skin disease across the skin tone …

Improving A Graduate-Level Health Care Informatics Epidemiology Course: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach, Michelle Crozier

Teaching Online Pedagogical Repository

Peer review of assignments encourages social cohesion among students, promotes a better understanding of course material, and develops soft skills. In the most recent National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) report, employers are most commonly seeking recent graduates who demonstrate the ability to problem solve and who effectively work on a team (Gray, 2024). Peer review assignments can help students practice these skills. Teaching students to provide quality feedback on peer assignments also allows instructors more direct student engagement opportunities since grading time is reduced (Hattie, 2022). This technique can be adopted for courses in any discipline and provides …

Juvenile Correctional Facility Programming, Abraham Ls Werner, April Terry Apr 2024

Juvenile Correctional Facility Programming, Abraham Ls Werner, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Rehabilitative programs designed to reduce future offending have been utilized within communities as well as correctional facilities, including juvenile correctional facilities. The “What Works” literature has now provided clear guidance to correctional facilities on which programs are most effective in reducing recidivism (Andrews & Bonta, 2006). Generally, the metric for success is measuring rates of reoffending and/or new stents of incarceration. This poster outlines the What Works literature for youth, focusing on programs offered within juvenile correctional facilities. When evidence-based programs are utilized, youth are more successful upon reentering into society and also have decreases in future offending (Andrews et …

2024 Student Academic Showcase

The purpose of this research is to determine the impact that social media plays in people’s political identification. Today, children have access to politics through multiple social media platforms. While this could be a good way for children to grow into mature, individualistic adults, it could also expose them to aspects of politics they may not yet understand. Generation Z is the first adolescent generation to navigate social media as a source of political knowledge. It has been previously found that, yes, people usually follow in their parents’ footsteps when it comes to politics. However, with the recent surge of …
