Trauma-Informed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction To Increase Family Quality Of Life For Mothers Of Children With Autism: A Pilot Study, Carol May Vaughn

Theses and Dissertations

Mothers of children with autism have a higher rate of stress than mothers of neurotypical children and mothers of children with other disabilities. This impacts their family quality of life. This study aimed to show that by teaching mothers trauma-informed mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques they were able to switch their perspectives and feel that they had increased the relationships with their child with autism and increased the rating they give their family quality of life. The participants were recruited using word of mouth and through distribution of posters to autism communities following approval of the experiment through the institutional review …

Distinguishing Between Symptom Presence And Severity Using A Two-Part Sequential Model, Luiza Ferreira Pradera Apr 2024

Distinguishing Between Symptom Presence And Severity Using A Two-Part Sequential Model, Luiza Ferreira Pradera

Theses and Dissertations

Most symptom measures either implicitly or explicitly distinguish between symptom presence and symptom severity. For example, item 2 on the PHQ-9, a commonly used measure of depressive symptoms, asks respondents to rate how much they have been 'feeling down, depressed, or hopeless.' The response options are 0 (Not at all), 1 (Several Days), 2 (More than half the days), and 3 (Nearly every day). Answering 0 indicates that the symptom is not present, and any response greater than 0 suggests the symptom is present. Higher values indicate higher severity of the symptom. Although the response options distinguish between symptom presence …

The Practice Of Silence And Solitude And Its Results, Lizzie Suwala Apr 2024

The Practice Of Silence And Solitude And Its Results, Lizzie Suwala

Senior Honors Theses

Silence and solitude as a spiritual discipline is seen across many different worldviews including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Humanism, and can be exercised alongside disciplines like prayer, meditation, and mindfulness. Each worldview has a unique purpose in why silence and solitude is practiced such as to commune with God, to prepare one’s heart for times of prayer, to avoid suffering, to experience revelations, and to find peace in an anxious world. Loneliness stems from unmet expectations of social interactions that lead to aversion in one’s current relationships and within themselves. Understanding the purpose of silence and solitude leads to the …

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common and debilitating psychiatric disorder that may occur in individuals exposed to traumatic events such as accidents, interpersonal violence, war, combat, or natural disasters. Additionally, PTSD has been implicated in the development of a variety of chronic conditions including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, suggesting that the biological alterations associated with the disorder can manifest themselves as chronic diseases in those suffering from PTSD. The biological underpinnings of the disorder are not well understood. Gene expression studies can illuminate the complex physiology of PTSD reflecting the embodiment of trauma, i.e., the process in which traumatic …

Effects Of Three Different Loading Models On Strength And Body Composition In Resistance Trained Persons, Orlando Rivera Apr 2024

Effects Of Three Different Loading Models On Strength And Body Composition In Resistance Trained Persons, Orlando Rivera

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Periodization of the annual training plan is a commonly utilized tool within the strength and conditioning community. Within the periodized plan, load is a key variable that is often manipulated to optimize strength development. At the present moment, a common model for load prescription involves the use of a percentage-based training (PBT) plan. However, inherent problems within a PBT loading model may reduce the accuracy of the training stimulus due to various reasons including atypical one repetition maximum (1RM) performance, strength improvements, or an acute decrease in an individual’s ability to perform. Thus, autoregulatory loading models may be a …

Analysis Of Stanley House: The Lifecycle Of A Residence, Madison Wall

Architecture Cultures Student Papers

Throughout the history of architecture, people often share a common goal of wanting their residences to be visually appealing. Buildings are adapted over time to keep up with the aesthetic, whether for personal enjoyment, functionality or to display one’s status. However, barriers such as personal finance and global economics are limiting factors in the outcome of the architecture. Depending on the barriers faced, the lifecycle of a building could be critically impacted. Under economic pressure, owners prioritize functional needs while aesthetic changes are gradually made over time. Architectural evolution is a result of balancing visual desires with financial reality. By …

'I’M A Pilot First, Female Second': Why Flight Deck Gender Imbalance Persists And The Case For Allyship, Kimberly Perkins, Rachael H. Merola, Sourojit Ghosh, Cecilia Aragon

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Why is there greater gender parity for long-haul truck drivers, astronauts, and paleontologists than for women airline captains? This study uses a mixed-methods approach to examine the underlying causes of the gender imbalance in the United States aviation industry, in which only 3.6% of airline captains are women. Two polls and one survey gather data from professional pilots (N=1093) on their experience with stereotyping, gender bias, and allyship. Direct comments were analyzed to shed light on the results of the survey. Results suggest that, contrary to prevailing perceptions, the persistent gender imbalance in the flight deck can largely be attributed …

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has very specific requirements for individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) that center around the executive function abilities of individuals without the aid of ADHD medications, which are forbidden for use by the FAA. These abilities are evaluated by the FAA's medical examination process, which involve a background investigation into a person's history. K-12 Administrators and educators can assist young aspiring pilots with ADHD by placing aviation-specific functional educational goals in their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans.

Current Awareness And Tools Available For Stress-Induced Ibs In Children, Tripta Rughwani

Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses

Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder that affects 13-38% of children (4-17 years) worldwide. Early life stresses like trauma, family pressure, abuse, and parenting factors may alter the HPA axis leading to GI sensitivity. IBS symptoms can impact an individual’s quality of life, affect school attendance, and can be emotionally and financially stressful for the caregivers. To date, there is no known cure for IBS. While antidepressants have shown some efficacy in treating moderate to severe IBS in adults, prescribing a universal antidepressant drug, especially to the pediatric population is challenging due to the variability …
