Breaking The Glass Ceiling: Lived Experiences And Career Paths Of Women Administrators In Hispanic-Serving Institutions In The U.S. Southwest Border States, Carlos Adalberto Rios
Theses and Dissertations
This research study focuses on female executives at two-year and four-year public Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the U.S. Southwest Border States by examining their lived experiences and career paths that helped them become successful senior administrators. Although most college students are female, women in leadership positions in academia are severely underrepresented at institutions nationwide. This research will be a qualitative study using a phenomenological research methodology. It will explore the lived experiences of six female executives in higher education at Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the U.S. Southwest Border States. This study will also investigate the career paths and challenges that these women …
‘Samoye Vazhnoye’: Behind The Scenes Of Russian Cinema, 1908–1924, Katerina Ludwig
‘Samoye Vazhnoye’: Behind The Scenes Of Russian Cinema, 1908–1924, Katerina Ludwig
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
From the first decade of the 20th century to the middle of the 1920s, cinema in Russia exposed how politics and the modern medium were inseparably intertwined. As works that were produced during a period of great turmoil and uncertainty, films revealed more than a unilateral relationship. Cinema was used in Russia in the late-Imperial and early Soviet eras as an active tool of entertainment, propaganda, art, education, and intellectual discussion. Studying its intersectional nature illuminates areas obscured by purely political or artistic perspectives, which tell either opposite or mutually emboldening tales. This thesis argues on behalf of both …
Examining The Effects Of Video-Enhanced Syllabi On Learner Motivation And Perception, Donna Holly Park
Examining The Effects Of Video-Enhanced Syllabi On Learner Motivation And Perception, Donna Holly Park
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Finding ways to motivate learners in online courses can be difficult when the interaction between the instructor and the learner is conducted through written text. The use of syllabi is an important component to help guide learners and provide them with course expectations. A poorly written or misinterpreted syllabus can contribute to a negative experience. When the syllabus is perceived in a way that promotes negative feelings, the learners may have a more difficult time being successful in the course. The purpose of this study was to determine how a video-enhanced syllabus affects motivation in an online course.
The courses …
Re/Writing Identity: A Narrative Inquiry Exploring Stereotype Threat, Sense Of Belonging, And Self-Efficacy Among Young Men Of Color In First-Year Writing Courses, Jenny O. Arras
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
This narrative study explored the ways in which two Black male undergraduate students experienced and situated their identity in their first-year composition (FYC) courses. The study sought to reveal how the participants experienced stereotype threat in both the classroom and larger community and the ways in which this perceived threat impacted their self-efficacy and sense of belonging. The participants, enrolled in an FYC course for underprepared writers at a southeastern university, were both performing well in the class, thereby providing insight into the factors and experiences that helped mitigate the potential of stereotype threat. In order to more fully understand …
Exploring The Relationship Between Anxiety And Virtual Reality Sickness, David Wesley Woolverton
Exploring The Relationship Between Anxiety And Virtual Reality Sickness, David Wesley Woolverton
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
As virtual reality (VR) becomes more commonly used in education, it is important to understand the technology’s weakness and mitigate any potential negative effects on student success. One adverse side-effect of VR use is simulation-induced motion sickness, known in the context of VR as VR sickness. Previous research by Howard and Van Zandt (2021) found that possessing a phobia had a significant positive correlation with VR sickness, but only if the phobia is triggered by the simulation, suggesting that symptoms are actually connected to the anxiety the phobia induces. This study explored the hypothesized correlation between anxiety and VR sickness, …

Flood Waters Rise: Hurricanes, Disaster Response, And Race Relations In Coastal Alabama, 1906 – 2006, Danielle Leonardi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
This thesis examines the changes in social relations after natural disasters, specifically hurricanes. The Hurricane of 1906 caused massive damage to Mobile due to the limited warnings. Tensions before the hurricane were already heightened from the Atlanta Race Riot and boiled over after the storm, resulting in a double lynching. Mobile received very little federal aid after the 1906 hurricane and relief heavily on their own communities and the Alabama National Guard. Hurricane Frederic in 1979 was much different because of its position in the Civil Rights Movement. The government relief was slow due to the overwhelming amount needed, and …

Master Narrative Of College Access Belies Reality For Today’S Students, Jonathan S. Lewis, René A. Hernandez
Master Narrative Of College Access Belies Reality For Today’S Students, Jonathan S. Lewis, René A. Hernandez
Journal of College Access
Master and alternative narratives offer a useful framework through which to consider contemporary issues in college access. Implicit and ubiquitous, the master narrative of a linear progression from high school through a residential college toward a fulfilling career has long been dominant. Meanwhile, alternative narratives of fluid, dynamic, alternate pathways are ascendant, having received a boost from the Covid-19 pandemic and the stubborn lack of affordable postsecondary options. Observing a decline in a shared cultural narrative about college, the authors recommend that advisors help students to sort through possible storylines and then write their own.
An Examination Of Products That University Of Mississippi Students Consume For Managing Their Stress, Kiersten Rickard
An Examination Of Products That University Of Mississippi Students Consume For Managing Their Stress, Kiersten Rickard
Honors Theses
Students are notoriously one of the most stressed groups in our society. Stress is a complex topic; causes, mitigation methods, and manifestations of stress all vary in an individual. Being that stress is an universal experience, this research capitalizes on the importance of stress and the methods used to mitigate stress. This study looks at, among other ideas, stress on the University of Mississippi campus in regards to demographics and the products (caffeine, sleep aids, over the counter medicines, stress supplements, and CBD) that students use. Results demonstrate that, overall, higher stress levels correlate to higher product usage rates. The …

Conference Presentation Abstracts
Introduction: Psychosocial symptoms (e.g., emotional distress, anxiety, and depression) are under-recognized and undertreated in patients diagnosed with cancer. Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are particularly vulnerable to poor psychosocial health due to the often disfiguring and permanently life-altering nature of HNC treatment. Prior research suggests that psychosocial symptoms contribute to poor quality of life in HNC patients. However, the association between precancer treatment anxiety and depression on quality of life after HNC treatment is unknown. This study examined the associations between pre-treatment anxiety and depression and long-term quality of life among patients with HNC. Methods: This is a retrospective …

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Researchers explore upward mobility to better understand how economic and employment factors drive or undermine social justice and equity in the United States. This scholarship can inform activists and researchers seeking to design solutions that help overcome systemic challenges to upward mobility. Therefore, as an interdisciplinary team of scholars in a public university, we collaborated with community partners to conduct a case study in which we assessed the barriers to—and the drivers of—upward mobility in a medium-sized city in Southeastern North Carolina. We conducted key informant interviews and focus groups with a cross-section of local residents to learn about their …

On April 15th, 2022, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, the most aggressive form. Everything changed that day. My body became a specimen, inspected weekly. I decided to document the process of my treatment as a way to understand the implications and ramifications of living with the disease.
I transform my artwork into multiple iterations in response to my body’s changing landscape. The transparent layers of my abstracted poetry, transitional body photos, and MRI scans suggest the permeability of the cortex and the fluidity between the interior and exterior. Looking through the layers allows for a connection with …

Prelimbic Cortex Neuronal Assemblies In Behaviors Predictive Of Drug-Seeking Before And After Cocaine Self-Administration, Karla J. Galvan
Prelimbic Cortex Neuronal Assemblies In Behaviors Predictive Of Drug-Seeking Before And After Cocaine Self-Administration, Karla J. Galvan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Literature has established that there are certain behaviors that are predictive of drug seeking and relapse such as impulsivity, distress tolerance (DT), Pavlovian conditioned approach (PCA), anxiety, and sensation-seeking. However, few studies have examined the behavioral interactions among these tasks and drug-seeking, and none have examined the neural interactions in the prelimbic cortex, which has an essential role in drug-seeking and is implicated in each of the aforementioned behaviors of interest. We therefore hypothesized that certain behaviors including high impulsivity, low distress tolerance, high anxiety, and high locomotor activity would predict high cocaine-seeking. We further hypothesized that the neuronal activity in …

The Effects Of Police Culture And Procedural Justice On Citizens' Perceptions Of Police Legitimacy And Trustworthiness, Kityara U'Nae James
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Police departments have often cited “a few bad apples” when discussing incidents of officer misconduct or improper use of force. However, police reform organizations often posit that when the tree is bad, all fruit it bears will be rotten. Police culture serves as the root of the tree in this analogy; the basis of the characteristics and behaviors of police rely on the specifics of police culture that has been imprinted during the police academy and maintained through everyday police work. Police culture determines how police officers interact with citizens and behave on the job. Those interactions can influence how …

What happens to our students when they do not complete their studies and drop out of school? Perhaps this question is probably not something that we reflect on as educators. This study seeks to amplify three studentsâ?? voices and explore their unique experiences and the challenges they faced after they did not complete their high school studies. The interviews that I conducted tell the story of three minority students from lower-income families. Their stories highlight the overall purpose of this study, which is how students who find themselves involved in disciplinary issues are pushed out of school. The interviews capture …
Establishing The Validity Of A Measure Of Implicit Bias Toward People With Alcohol Use Disorder, Erin Marie Portillo
Establishing The Validity Of A Measure Of Implicit Bias Toward People With Alcohol Use Disorder, Erin Marie Portillo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Alcohol use disorder has been identified as one of the major burdens of disease but also remains one of the disorders with the lowest treatment prevalence. For individuals who seek treatment for their alcohol use disorder, they may experience barriers that impact their treatment for alcohol use disorder. These barriers may extend to a person’s beliefs, attitudes, and stigma. While attitudes and beliefs refer to their perceived need for treatment and beliefs of self-reliance, stigma is multistep process that makes way for stereotypes, prejudice, and acts of discrimination to take place. With labels such as “alcoholic” implying negative connotation and …

Social commerce has become a global phenomenon in recent years. Its convenience and accessibility have revolutionized how consumers shop and interact with brands and merchants. Gen Z consumers make up the majority (55.5%) of social buyers, and they are likely to be influenced by consumer-generated reviews (CGRs) and electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on social media. This thesis draws on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and employs a quantitative online questionnaire to determine whether CGRs and eWOM influence subjective norms (SN) perceptions, attitudes toward social commerce (ASC), and social shopping intention (SSI) of Gen Z consumers. The theoretical framework also included …
