Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of sports participation on students between the ages of 12 and 17 years old in their academic performances, attitudes, and study habits. Furthermore, the study focuses on sports involvement's positive and negative outcomes. Following high school, students have difficulty determining if they should further their education or go straight into the workforce. Those who play sports can consider opportunities in athletics. The study is conducted through purposive sampling which identifies and selects individuals with information related to the study. These individuals are pre-determined for more reliable data. There are six …

Short-Term Benefits From Manual Therapy As An Adjunct Treatment For Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness Symptoms: A Preliminary Prospective Case Series, Brent A. Harper, Larry Steinbeck
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Persistent dizziness and balance deficits are common, often with unknown etiology. Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (3PD) is a relatively new diagnosis with symptoms that may include dizziness, unsteadiness, or non-vertiginous dizziness and be persistent the majority of time over a minimum of 90 days. The purpose of this case series was to investigate short-term outcomes of reducing dizziness symptoms using a manual therapy intervention focused on restoring mobility in the fascia using a pragmatically applied biomechanical approach, the Fascial Manipulation® method (FM®), in patients with 3PD. The preliminary prospective case series consisted of twelve (n = 12) patients …
Language Enrollment In Higher Education: Exploring Social Psychological Factors In Spanish Language Programs With Advanced Learners, David Antonio Balmaceda Marenco
Language Enrollment In Higher Education: Exploring Social Psychological Factors In Spanish Language Programs With Advanced Learners, David Antonio Balmaceda Marenco
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Amidst waning enrollments in U.S. university Spanish courses, particularly at advanced levels, this three-study dissertation addresses the pronounced gender imbalances, delving into the sociopsychological dynamics such as beliefs, attitudes, motivation, and gender in the context of the specific language learning domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Positioned at a crucial juncture—often seen as a gateway to more advanced courses—the research uncovers the nuanced beliefs of learners about these foundational skills. Employing a blend of quantitative and mixed-methods designs, the studies emphasize the pivotal role of reading in advanced university Spanish coursework. Findings from the initial two studies, encapsulating diverse …
Probation And Pre-Trial Officers' Perspectives On The Impact Of Maternal Incarceration On Children, Shaniqua Anderson
Probation And Pre-Trial Officers' Perspectives On The Impact Of Maternal Incarceration On Children, Shaniqua Anderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Because of the mass incarceration of women, maternal incarceration has become a phenomenon within itself. This phenomenon has led to an increase in Black children with an incarcerated mother; however, there is a lack of information about how the cycle of the mass incarceration of Black women is perceived on the community supervision level. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to better understand probation and pre-trial officers’ perceptions of how the maternal incarceration of Black women impacts Black children. Three research questions explored how participants viewed the impact of maternal incarceration on Black children, recidivism, and positive reentry. …

Identifying Srnas Individual Learning Preferences Utilizing The Vark Learning Inventory Tool, James Eads
Identifying Srnas Individual Learning Preferences Utilizing The Vark Learning Inventory Tool, James Eads
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Abstract
All graduates of a doctoral anesthesiology program are required to successfully pass the National Certifying Exam (NCE). Since 2011, the national average passage rate has decreased from 89.1% to 84.1% in 2021 (NBCRNA, 2023). Yamaguchi’s 2022 study revealed that students are positively impacted academically when they implement individual learning preferences. The purpose of this project was to identify individual learning preferences for students enrolled in the U.S. Army Nurse Anesthesiology program. The hypothesis was that students who recognize their preferred learning and incorporate preferred learning techniques would result in an increased percentage of passage rate scores for the NCE. …
A Behavioral Intervention Checklist To Reduce Re-Hospitalizations In Residents With Mental Illness, Jeffery Davis
A Behavioral Intervention Checklist To Reduce Re-Hospitalizations In Residents With Mental Illness, Jeffery Davis
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Skilled nursing facilities are an essential component of the continuum of care and, with the rapidly aging population, represent an increasing cost to the healthcare system. The policies beginning in the 1960s promoting the deinstitutionalization of mental health institutions have resulted in increasing numbers of individuals with serious mental illnesses now residing in skilled nursing facilities. The complex needs of individuals with mental illness have been associated with an even greater cost of care, deficient quality, and safety concerns. This quality improvement project analyzed the impact of an evidenced-based, structured behavioral intervention checklist on rehospitalization rates in individuals with mental …
Dual Modes Of Dopamine Underly Distinct Facets Of Impulsive Actions, Tzvia Pinkhasov
Dual Modes Of Dopamine Underly Distinct Facets Of Impulsive Actions, Tzvia Pinkhasov
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
During the pursuit of basic needs, animals sometimes fail to suppress actions that are maladaptive and counterproductive to their survival. In humans, these actions are often called impulsive because they can incur negative consequences. Impulsivity is ubiquitous across psychiatric disorders and related to debilitating outcomes such as substance abuse, crime and suicidality. Despite its risks, a lack of a neural mechanism understanding of impulsive actions impedes the development of effective treatments. In this dissertation, I set out to bridge the knowledge gained from the parallel fields of neuropsychopharmacology, experimental psychology, and systems neuroscience to uncover neural mechanisms of impulsive actions. Clinicians …

College can be a very impressionable time for a student, both positively and negatively. One way the college experience can be positive is the interactions the student has with their professors/instructors (hereafter the term instructor will be used). One behavior the instructors can exhibit including in physical activity (PA) classes is being caring or showing caring behaviors toward students. The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ perceptions of the impact of PA instructor caring behaviors toward the student. For this study 69 college students (45 males and 24 females) were surveyed with one open-ended survey question. It …

The Effect Of Preparation On The Quality Of Sign Language Interpretation, Hólmfríður Thóroddsdóttir, Karen Rut Gísladóttir
Journal of Interpretation
This article discusses the effect of preparation on the cognitive load of sign language interpreters and its relationship to the quality of sign language interpretation. Participants were all sign language interpreters working in Iceland. The data collected were both qualitative and quantitative, i.e. interviews, a questionnaire in connection with a special interpreting project and a specially designed interpretation test. The test was held to obtain statistical information on the effects of preparation on sign language interpretation and to get feedback from the interpreters themselves about what they consider important to prepare.
The results of the study show that preparation both …

Redefining The Landscape Of Educational Interpreting: A National Study, Kristen Guynes, Deborah Cates, Angelina Pelikan, Stephanie Zito
Journal of Interpretation
This national study was conducted to examine the level of progress that educational sign language interpretation has made towards professionalization as a field, particularly since the establishment of the National Association of Interpreters in Education (NAIE) in 2016 and the subsequent release of their Standards and Professional Guidelines in 2019. Following a long history of literature indicating drastic disparities in educational interpreters’ credentials, qualifications, expectations, and working conditions, this mixed-method study partially replicated Johnson and colleagues’ (2018) national study, with added exploration of newly acknowledged domains. Data from 591 educational interpreters were analyzed using descriptive and content analyses, triangulated through …

The International Centre For The Settlement Of Investment Dispute (Icsid) Annulment Reform: A Lesson Learned From The World Trade Organization Struggle, Putu George Matthew Simbolon, Tiurma Mangihut Pitta Allagan
Indonesian Journal of International Law
This article expresses how ICSID can learn from the WTO’s current struggles due to the Appellate Body vacuum. To achieve that, this article consists of three discussions. The first discussions analyze the uncertainties caused by the vagueness of International Investment Law’s (IIL) absolute standards, due to the absence of a multilateral investment treaty. The second discussion expresses the elements of the Multi-Party Interim Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA Arrangement) that shall be taken into account by ICSID. The third discussion provides how the current ICSID annulment mechanism shall be reformed. Those issues are answered through doctrinal research in a prescriptive manner. In …

The Social Experiment: How The First Amendment Influences Private Social Media Companies, Collyn J. Kim
Helms School of Government Undergraduate Law Review
Social media has become one of the biggest mediums by which people communicate, socialize, and interact with each other. People follow political figures, cultural icons, and news outlets, among others, to gain knowledge on current events or the hot topic of the day. Many users, regardless of the platform, use their medium of choice to speak their own opinions and comment on the world’s issues. From prime ministers to popular memes, social media is a never-ending timeline of speech. With the constant speech and expression exhibited on social media, two important questions must be asked. First, does the First Amendment …

Continuing Bonds Experiences Of Bereaved Adults Within The Context Of The Pandemic, Benjamin Lyons
Honors Program Theses and Projects
COVID-19 has impacted the lives of countless people and has resulted in the death of millions. Due to this, there is a need to understand how individuals coped with the losses that came with this uniquely difficult circumstance. With this in mind, my project investigates how the COVID-related death of a loved one influences the continuing bonds relationship of bereaved adults within the context of the pandemic. Ten participants who lost a loved one to a COVID-related death during the pandemic were interviewed about their grief experiences and audio recorded. Using qualitative thematic analysis, themes in the data were constructed …

Unplanned Pregnancy As An Independent Risk Factor For Antepartum Si In A Post Roe Vs. Wade World, Rianna Mcnamee
Unplanned Pregnancy As An Independent Risk Factor For Antepartum Si In A Post Roe Vs. Wade World, Rianna Mcnamee
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Abstract: The objective of this literature review is to determine whether unplanned pregnancy is an independent risk factor for developing antepartum SI. Background: The Supreme Court of the United States of America recently ruled that the constitution of the United States does not confer a right to abortion to its citizens. As of October 2023, twenty-one states had developed full or partial bans on abortion, resulting in millions of Americans residing in areas where terminating unplanned pregnancy is not a viable option. There is evidence that indicates antepartum suicidal ideation (SI) is higher than that of the general population, however …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A School-Based Cognitive Behavioral Youth Depression Prevention Program In Improving Life Satisfaction, Roshani Patel, Steven M. Brunwasser, Alissa Hochman
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, known as the global burden of disease. Incident cases from 1990 to 2017 have increased by 49.86%. Additionally, rates have been seen to dramatically rise in adolescents aged 18-25 (17%) compared to rates in individuals aged 10-14 (1.1%). This makes it beneficial to have prevention programs for middle school aged children. The Penn Resiliency Program (PRP) is a youth depression prevention program focused on cultivating healthy thinking styles and behavioral coping skills. In our study, we used archival data from a randomized control trial of PRP to evaluate whether the program led …
