Nehiyaw Two Spirit Creation Stories: Re-Mapping Home, Desire, And Indigenous Education Through The Body, Ionah M. Elaine Scully
Nehiyaw Two Spirit Creation Stories: Re-Mapping Home, Desire, And Indigenous Education Through The Body, Ionah M. Elaine Scully
Dissertations - ALL
Creation is an ongoing process and Indigenous stories are meant to reflect this never-ending process of creation, sharing stories that grow with context and to impart teachings appropriate to context. Michel First Nation (MFN) and related Nehiyaw (Cree) nation’s creation stories, largely written about by white/settler scholars, narrate histories that extol the virtues of cis-straight men while rendering cis-straight women to the sidelines and Two Spirit/Indigiqueer (2S) people absent. Facing the highest rates of violence of any demographic (Martin et. al., 2019), 2S people are under threat of becoming ancestors before they are elders passing down knowledge. Uncovering 2S creation …
“Rude, Misshapen, Monstrous Rabblement”: Race, Disability, And Gender In Early Modern England, Deyasini Dasgupta
“Rude, Misshapen, Monstrous Rabblement”: Race, Disability, And Gender In Early Modern England, Deyasini Dasgupta
Dissertations - ALL
My first chapter, “‘Ugly Monstrous Shapes’: Reading Signs of Alterity,” looks at presentations of “othered” female bodies in Book I of Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene. This chapter draws our attention to various old, deformed, or otherwise dysfunctional bodies. In doing so, it not only emphasizes the necessity for reading but also listening to the “ugly monstrous shapes, that elsewhere no man may” find. Drawing attention to metaphor, rhyme, and non-verbal sounds produced by the disabled/disabling bodies in the poem, this chapter locates Spenser’s racialization of bodies in his careful cultivation of sympathy. By using sound as a disability structure, …
Beyond The Brush: How Women Artists Navigate Communication And Creativity Amidst The Rise Of Ai, Carrie Welch
Beyond The Brush: How Women Artists Navigate Communication And Creativity Amidst The Rise Of Ai, Carrie Welch
Theses - ALL
Women artists who use physical paints, canvases, charcoal, and pencils to create their work represent a marginalized group in the art world who may be perceived as distanced or removed from artificial intelligence (AI). While AI, art, feminist aesthetics, and media representation are each areas of rich research, they have not yet been brought together. As art itself is reconsidered alongside the rise of AI, this study conducted 20 in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews with women artists to understand the implications of choosing to incorporate AI into their work, changes to their artistic processes, adjustments to their communications about their work, …
Critical Evaluation And Recommendations Of Methods To Visualize Uncertainty In Static Image Maps Of Climate Change Model Outputs, Matthew Arsenault
Critical Evaluation And Recommendations Of Methods To Visualize Uncertainty In Static Image Maps Of Climate Change Model Outputs, Matthew Arsenault
Dissertations - ALL
This research presents an evaluation of the methods that can be used to visualize uncertainty in static image maps of climate change model outputs. Visualizing uncertainty can be traced back to the early days of cartography, scientific visualization, and information visualization. For decades, visualizations of uncertainty have been the focus of disparate research fields and multiple techniques have been proposed. However, critical evaluation of these approaches has not received the same level of consideration. This study identifies the current state of research for representing uncertainty on static maps and applies those methods to geospatial visualizations of climate change. Existing research …

This dissertation investigates the phenomenon of Cuban migration and highlights the critical role that social networks play in facilitating the process of emigration, settlement, and the formation of new identities for Cuban migrants in Syracuse. With a focus on the most recent waves of Cuban migrants, the study explores how social networks have become integral in shaping the migration experiences of these new Cubans, enabling them to navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with emigrating and settling in Syracuse, NY, a non-gateway city. This research employs a qualitative approach, drawing on in-depth interviews of twenty-five participants, participant observations, and analysis …
Becoming And Unbecoming "Girl:" Understanding A Gendered Life Through Lessons Learned As A "Horse Girl", Katie Stone
Becoming And Unbecoming "Girl:" Understanding A Gendered Life Through Lessons Learned As A "Horse Girl", Katie Stone
Theses - ALL
This thesis dissects the experience of gender in public and private spaces utilizing lessons gathered as a “horse girl.” The concept and experience of being “woman” is navigated through various value systems drawn from Indigenous philosophies, government treaties, the queer experience, the history of the cowboy, familial story-telling, and personal life accounts. The Americanized, Western worldview of gender is analyzed and critiqued. This research discusses the implications the era of “Manifest Destiny” had on the colonization of land, bodies, and ultimately the contemporary idea of identity. I employ the cowboy as a vessel for translating these histories and identities. Our …
Examining The Nexus Of Food Insecurity And Oral Health, Abigayle Talbot
Examining The Nexus Of Food Insecurity And Oral Health, Abigayle Talbot
Honors Theses
This research paper delves into the relationship between oral health and nutrition status among individuals with food insecurity. As both oral health and nutritional well-being play pivotal roles in overall health, understanding their interplay in the context of food insecurity becomes important. This study investigated how inadequate access to food resources, a characteristic of food insecurity, can impact oral health, leading to a spectrum of dental issues. The study explores the impact of compromised oral health on dietary habits, potentially resulting in nutritional deficiencies or malnutrition. By examining the potential pathways through which these factors influence each other, the study …
Proposals To Address Health Disparities In Occupational Therapy, Madison Michelle Cotten
Proposals To Address Health Disparities In Occupational Therapy, Madison Michelle Cotten
Honors Theses
Health disparities, “preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health,” are infamous for their effects within both general healthcare and occupational therapy settings (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2008). Though existing literature establishes a need for the widespread adoption of anti-discrimination measures, specific recommendations for occupational therapy schools remain limited. This project aims to remedy this gap in knowledge by serving as an initial overview of healthcare disparities within occupational therapy and by addressing the potential value of incorporating diversity courses into the curriculum of occupational therapy schools. Through the presentation …
Russian Interventionism: A Case Study Of President Vladimir Putin's Personal Influence In The Syrian Civil War, Lee Holmes
Honors Theses
The most influential factors in implementing interventionist policies into vulnerable countries are widely debated depending on political factors in the international relations sphere. Russia’s decision to intervene in Syria’s civil war in 2015 while Syria collapsed from civil unrest and authoritarian corruption is a prime example. Although most literature agrees that Russia’s intervention stemmed from an attempt to solidify political influence and diplomatic relations in the Middle East, hardly any addresses President Vladimir Putin’s individual influence as a determining factor. Since national power is consolidated to the individual leader in authoritarian regimes, it is crucial to understand President Putin’s personal …

Queering The Nation Or Nationalizing Queerness?: How Lgb-Identified Soldiers Experience Belonging And Service Post-Dadt, Aaron Blasyak
Dissertations - ALL
At the core of this dissertation project lies the question: What forms of belonging and inclusions are made possible through liberal shifts in the laws governing the institutional contexts of sexual minorities? To answer this question, I draw upon 22 in-depth interviews with gay, lesbian, and bisexual (LGB) soldiers about their experiences of serving after the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT). More specifically, this dissertation focuses on three broad research questions to address these issues. First, I ask: What are the experiences of inclusion and acceptance of LGB-identified soldiers within the context of military service? How might these …

Autism Diagnosis Effects On The Relationship Between Communication Skills And Nonverbal Intelligence: A Moderation Analysis, Emily Watts
Dissertations - ALL
School psychologists have a responsibility to find, identify, and assess children with disabilities (IDEA, 2004) using assessment tools that are culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate (NASP, 2020). As autism is a neurodevelopmental condition listed as an educational disability category (IDEA, 2004) that impacts one in 31.25 people (Wallis et al., 2023), it is crucial that popular assessment tools be examined for suitability for the autistic community. Most school psychologists use the Weschler scales of intelligence to assess their autistic students (Aiello et al., 2017), despite previous research indicating that Weschler scales of cognitive abilities underestimate the intelligence of people with …

The first essay (Chapter 2) explores how deliberation …
Researching Emotional Experiences As Discursive Elements – A Suggested Qualitative Method, Magnus Danielson
Researching Emotional Experiences As Discursive Elements – A Suggested Qualitative Method, Magnus Danielson
The Qualitative Report
As scholars in the fields of political science, media research, and social psychology endeavor to understand crucial aspects of emotionality in the media, there is a growing need to methodologically address the communicative and discursive aspects of affective constructions in media texts. This article argues that by breaking down mediated emotional experiences represented through language in a set of identifiable elements, such as subject, emotion type, valence, intensity, proposed action, and object, those experiences could be used as workable and potent units of analysis when studying discursive and ideological media constructs of emotionality. By connecting insights from emotion science, the …

Post-pandemic, fans have returned in droves to watch live matches at stadiums following the relaxation of strict observance of safety protocols. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to determine the factors that prompt fans to attend matches during games by focusing on three main factors including team affiliation, sportscape and star players. We used a qualitative phenomenological approach to obtain deeper comprehension regarding factors that influence fans to crowd at stadiums to …
A Foray Into Love: Feminism In The Romance Novel, Kiersten Holland
A Foray Into Love: Feminism In The Romance Novel, Kiersten Holland
Honors College Theses
In this paper, I am examining the relationship between the waves of feminism and the evolution of the romance novel, by focusing on themes of sexual identity, financial independence, societal roles, and free thought within the text. The romance genre is overlooked and underestimated, despite it being one of the largest and best-selling genres in publishing, because of its inherent relationship with women. By analyzing it, I hope to educate people about the genre, as well as highlight the key parts of its importance to women’s rights and the feminist movement. By doing a close reading of novels ranging from …
Women Doctoral Students In Computer Science: Nevertheless, They Persist, Shannon L. Mccoy-Hayes Edd
Women Doctoral Students In Computer Science: Nevertheless, They Persist, Shannon L. Mccoy-Hayes Edd
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Throughout millennia systemic restrictions have prevented women from full participation in science. Even now, with science ubiquitous to life as we know it, double standards impact women’s access and equal participation in STEM. Computer science (CS) is one STEM field where women remain significantly underrepresented in both academia and the workforce, yet despite decades worth of semi-annual reporting, there is still no consensus as to why. A survey was deployed to twenty-nine institutions inviting women doctoral students in CS to participate in personal interviews. Six women from different institutions at different stages of their programs responded. Qualitative interviews using phenomenological …

Research on national norms show alarming gaps in academic performance and engagement between genders, with men and boys performing worse (Reeves, 2022). The Student Satisfaction Inventory is a tool used by universities across the U.S. to measure different aspects of student satisfaction. An examination of gender differences between Bethel found far more similarities than differences in satisfaction, importance and academic performance.
The Barnum Effect And Acceptance Of Personality Test Results, Gretchen Mugglin, Joel Frederickson
The Barnum Effect And Acceptance Of Personality Test Results, Gretchen Mugglin, Joel Frederickson
Science Symposium
A natural tendency of humans is to categorize things, including personality. Personality tests and types seem to be scarily accurate at times, but why? This study examines the Barnum Effect, a phenomenon in which individuals are overly accepting of vague, general personality statements, even if they are not specific to any one individual. College students were asked to take a shortened version of the Big Five Inventory analysis, and then either given results that were consistent with the test, or results that were the same for everyone in that condition-- vague and nonspecific.

Estimation Of Anagram Solving Abilities For Peers And Self, Amia Hall, Joel Frederickson
Science Symposium
Participants predicted personal and peer anagram solving abilities after either solving an anagram or being prompted with an anagram’s answers. Then, participants in the latter group solved an anagram as the former group had. We hypothesized there would be a greater mean difference in prediction of performance and actual performance among participants who made predictions after being provided anagram answers than after solving an anagram. Additionally, we hypothesized that participants would overestimate personal and peer abilities.
Anti-Immigrant Sentiment: The Role Of Perceived Locus Of Control And Sex, Ian Young, Ron Enos
Anti-Immigrant Sentiment: The Role Of Perceived Locus Of Control And Sex, Ian Young, Ron Enos
Science Symposium
This study explored the extent to which anti-immigrant sentiment can be predicted based on the variables of gender and perceived locus of control. In order to obtain a more representative sample, three countries (United States, Brazil, and Taiwan) were chosen for this study from the 2017-2020 World Values Survey (WVS) due to their varied geographical and racial and ethnic composition. Due to the important implications of anti-immigrant sentiment, this study sought to expand previous research, which has generally neglected to consider how locus of control and gender both may be significantly related to hostile attitudes toward immigrants. Results of a …
Quality Sleep & Well-Being, Cayla Paumen, Joel Frederickson
Quality Sleep & Well-Being, Cayla Paumen, Joel Frederickson
Science Symposium
Despite being a vital function, sleep is not usually given priority, particularly among college students. University students may suffer from sleep deprivation because it affects their ability to concentrate, remember things, control their emotions, and handle stress. Stress levels and the quality of one's sleep are inversely correlated. The great majority of research papers, if not all of them, on wellness interventions and sleep quality concentrate on the direct effects of stress reduction strategies on sleep quantity. The primary goal of the study is to determine whether undergraduate university participants who received quality sleep education, which emphasized teaching sleep hygiene …
Mind Over Matter: The Impact Of Mindsets On Performance, Joyce Ngwa, Joel Frederickson
Mind Over Matter: The Impact Of Mindsets On Performance, Joyce Ngwa, Joel Frederickson
Science Symposium
Many researchers have examined the positive effects of adopting a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. In this study, 50 participants were randomly assigned to either a growth or fixed mindset message and then were asked to complete a word search puzzle under a 3-minute time limit. The number of words correctly identified was associated with the participants’ performance based on the mindset message they received. Participants' performance was analyzed along with respective demographic information and their results on a brief mindset questionnaire.

Sound Of The Mind: The Effects Of Music On Anxiety, Cassidy Yates, Joel Frederickson
Science Symposium
Anxiety is a growing condition around the world. People have a variety of solutions to mental illness. Maybe, our solution could be even more closely related to what we’re already doing. Bethel psychology students participated in this study, voluntarily, for credit in their psychology courses. 11 jazz listeners and 6 rock listeners had their heart rate monitored while listening to a song, all after participating in a state anxiety survey. The data reflect the heart rates before the song, 30 seconds into the song, 1 minute and 30 seconds into the song, at the end of 3 minutes and 1 …

As children are getting access to devices at an increasingly younger age, parents need to grapple with new ways to protect them from online risks. This indicates the need for support from parental control tools to enhance their self-efficacy, which we refer to as educational features. This is little addressed in the existing literature on parental mediation. As we begin to address this gap, we created a low-fidelity prototype with designs of Google's existing parental control as our baseline design. We used the baseline design in semi-structured interviews with 12 parents whose children (aged below 14) are active Internet users, …
