Psychometric Properties Of The Jordanian Picture Test From The Wexler-4 Intelligence Scale In Sign Language For The Deaf (Ages 6–16.11 Years), Samer Abu Drea, Farouq Al-Rawsan
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This study focuses on developing and validating a Jordanian version of the WISC-4 intelligence scale in sign language for deaf children aged 6 to 16.11 years. The aim is to assess the psychometric properties, including validity and reliability, of this version to serve as a trustworthy tool for measuring the cognitive abilities of deaf children in Jordan using sign language, aligned with their linguistic and cultural characteristics. A descriptive approach was employed, and the sample consisted of 413 deaf children from various regions across the country. The results demonstrated that the Jordanian version exhibits high content validity, with strong correlations …

The Effectiveness Of A Cognitive Behavioral Counseling Program In Reducing Future Anxiety Among Delinquents At The Girls' Welfare Institution In Riyadh, Haifa Al-Dosari, Yahya Khatatbeh
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral counseling-based program in reducing future anxiety among female juvenile delinquents at the Rehabilitation Institution for Females in Riyadh. The participants consisted of 28 female juvenile delinquents, who were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group of 14 and a control group of 14. To achieve the study objectives, the researchers used the Future Anxiety Scale (2009), developed by Almoshaky, after verifying its psychometric properties, in addition to implementing the cognitive-behavioral program. The study findings indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental and …
A Travel Ban Is Nothing New: Moral Panic, Moral Entrepreneurs, And Immigration Policy, William F. Danaher, Debaleena Ghosh
A Travel Ban Is Nothing New: Moral Panic, Moral Entrepreneurs, And Immigration Policy, William F. Danaher, Debaleena Ghosh
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
The U.S. travel ban on Muslims was part of a historical pattern to curb immigration. In this paper, we take a historical-comparative approach to analyze two cases: The Chinese Exclusion Act and the Muslim Ban. We show how moral panics fueled by moral entrepreneurs led to immigration policies banning both groups and how historical events were important in the process. In the Chinese case, cultural stereotypes and competition with other immigrant groups led to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. In the Muslim case, 9/11 led moral entrepreneurs to associate all Muslims with terrorism, setting the stage for moral panic and …
Toward A Unified Neuroaesthetic Framework For Art-Based Interventions In Substance Use Recovery - A Review, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Toward A Unified Neuroaesthetic Framework For Art-Based Interventions In Substance Use Recovery - A Review, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Art-based interventions have gained increasing recognition as complementary strategies for substance use disorder (SUD) recovery and prevention, yet the field remains fragmented across clinical art therapy, community-based programs, and expressive digital practices. This article advances a unified neuroaesthetic framework that integrates sensory regulation, narrative integration, and interpersonal synchronization as the core mechanisms of healing. Drawing on recent U.S.-based empirical studies (post-2020), the paper synthesizes evidence from multiple modalities, including visual arts, music therapy, dance/movement practices, and digital storytelling, each demonstrating measurable effects on craving reduction, stress regulation, identity reconstruction, and social connection. Neuroscientific insights are central: findings highlight how creative …

Learning In Virtual Environments With Varying Levels Of Sensory Information, Maryam Derayati Far
Learning In Virtual Environments With Varying Levels Of Sensory Information, Maryam Derayati Far
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
The sensory environment plays a critical role in shaping learners’ attention, engagement, and retention. This thesis investigates how varying levels of sensory input in virtual reality (VR) classrooms influence learning for two age groups—children and young adults—and explores how individual differences in sensory processing moderate these effects. Using immersive VR technology to simulate classroom settings, two experimental studies were conducted. Study One involved 60 children aged 6–15 years, recruited primarily through a university-run summer camp. Study Two included 57 undergraduate students aged 18–36 years, recruited through a research participation pool. In both studies, participants were randomly assigned to either a …
Post-Finasteride Syndrome: Medically Unexplained, Stewart Justman
Post-Finasteride Syndrome: Medically Unexplained, Stewart Justman
Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications
Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS) is a controversial illness associated with a host of distressing symptoms—most notably sexual dysfunctions—reported to persist long beyond the intake of finasteride itself. It appears the PFS population consists exclusively of younger patients with alopecia, even though millions take a higher (if pharmacologically similar) dosage of finasteride for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This dichotomy is not what one would expect to observe if finasteride caused PFS. No medical explanation of this one-sided syndrome exists. The surge of cases of PFS following a publicity spike in 2011 and 2012 suggests that PFS owes much nonbiological factors. The present analysis …
Gaming As Therapeutic Modality For Military Veterans: Evidence, Mechanisms, And Program Design, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Gaming As Therapeutic Modality For Military Veterans: Evidence, Mechanisms, And Program Design, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study synthesizes interdisciplinary evidence on game-based interventions for military veterans, mapping neurological mechanisms to clinically relevant outcomes while outlining design principles for community programs that leverage interactive media. The review characterizes how structured gameplay supports emotional regulation through attentional control, predictable feedback schedules, and reward-mediated learning that elevates motivation and mood; links to dopaminergic signaling and reduced rumination suggest plausible pathways for affective stabilization. Executive functions receive targeted engagement via strategy, puzzle, and action mechanics that demand working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and rapid decision-making, providing ecologically valid practice with measurable transfer to daily functioning. Social architectures in multiplayer …

Item 5: Activity: Why Do We Engage In Politics?, Natascia Boeri
Natascia Boeri, Advocacy in Action: Civic Engagement Through Social Sciences
This discussion-based activity helps students explore definitions of civic engagement. It encourages them to consider how macro, demographic, social, and psychological factors influence participation. The activity also provides a framework for personal reflection on their own civic engagement and participation.

Item 1: Syllabus: African American Literature, Scott Hicks
Scott Hicks, African American Literature
This syllabus surveys African American literature via the reading and discussion of canonical texts enriched by relevant documentaries. It is divided into a series of topics, organized thematically and roughly chronologically, that foreground consideration of core concepts (such as consciousness, freedom, love, and self-actualization) and tropes (such as tricksters, enslavement, vernacular, and double consciousness) and culminate in consideration of voting advocacy within the context of civil rights activism. Finally, the syllabus makes space for synchronous collaborative writing, in support of students’ development of skills of interpretation and critical thinking in relationship with each other.

Item 2: Activity 1: Creating Group Agreements For Classroom Discussions, Kara Dillard
Kara Dillard, Civic Leadership: Theories and Practice
Higher education classrooms are ideal for learning the skills of democratic civic discourse, but these spaces also need agreed upon norms for how students will engage each other. Over four sequential steps, this activity asks students to reflect on the times they’ve had a difficult discussion, what went well and what did not, and to use these reflections to generate a set of shared class values to guide their conversations about wicked issues.
Item 4: Activity 3: Surfacing Values Through Moral Foundation Conversations, Kara Dillard
Item 4: Activity 3: Surfacing Values Through Moral Foundation Conversations, Kara Dillard
Kara Dillard, Civic Leadership: Theories and Practice
This activity explores the concept of motivated reasoning and the moral foundations people hold that make them believe wicked issues are “wicked.” Students will explore their own values and think about how their values change depending on the issue. Students will also practice talking with people who have different values than them on any given issue.

Item 6: Sociological Imagination And Civic Problems Essay Assignment, Fatima Sattar
Fatima Sattar, Soc 1100 - Introduction to Sociology with a Civic Engagement Emphasis
In this assignment, a short-written essay, students will be using the concept of the “sociological imagination” (introduced by sociologist C. Wright Mills) to examine a local civic problem reported in the news. Mills introduces this idea of “personal troubles” versus “public issues” by explaining that although individuals tend to perceive their problems as being “personal troubles,” these problems are “public issues,” stemming from the structures and culture of society. To effectively engage in civic engagement, we must understand how societal structures, culture, and practices impact our everyday lives and problems we experience. This can then help us work collectively on …

Montclair State University Scholarship & Creative Works
This article highlights the foundational challenge of rapid interprofessional student team formation and the potential challenges that groupthink poses for newly-formed teams participating in collaborative problem-based learning activities. This article describes a mixed-methods study that addresses groupthink by introducing a generative artificial intelligence-based agent (genAI agent) into the small group processes of student teams engaging in a session of a well-established virtual interprofessional education methodology. The integration of this novel genAI tool into each student team was an intentional pedagogical technique, introduced in response to the challenges that newly-formed student teams may encounter as they rapidly come together and potentially …

Editor’S Note: Comparative Civilizational Turn: The Future Of The Iscsc In The Wake Of Geopolitical “Grey Rhino” Events, Greg Lewicki
Comparative Civilizations Review
The last few years seem to have brought some bitter realizations among political scientists, forecasters, and security analysts. Namely: they tend to err, and their forecasts too often remain off-target.

Military personnel are particularly at risk for auditory processing difficulties as their training, occupational, and combat experiences increase the likelihood of long-term damage to the auditory system as well as negatively impact physical, psychological, cognitive, and sensory functioning. This article introduces a music therapy and speech-language pathology co-treatment program, Auditory Cognition Lab (ACL), that treats auditory and cognitive deficits in military-connected populations (service members, veterans) with traumatic brain injury (TBI). ACL addresses auditory discrimination, temporal and binaural processing, and trains compensatory strategies related to auditory processing, cognition, and hearing function. ACL has been clinically implemented at multiple military treatment facilities …
