Peninsula Medical School
Background: Recurrent seizure-related emergency department (ED) attendances are common and associated with poor outcomes. We aimed to identify factors associated with repeated seizure-related ED use and to develop a mortality risk score among individuals re-attending with seizures. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study across two district general hospitals in South-West England, Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCH; 2015–2018) and Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Trust (RUH; 2018–2022). Adults (≥18 years) with ≥2 seizure-related ED attendances were included. Negative binomial regression was used to examine demographic and clinical predictors of repeat attendances. A risk score based on these predictors was …
Metabolic Flexibility As A Candidate Mechanism For The Development Of Postoperative Morbidity, Pietro Arina, John Whittle, Maciej R Kaczorek, Davide Ferrari, Nicholas Tetlow, Amy Dewar, Robert Stephens, Daniel Martin, S Ramani Moonesinghe, Evangelos B Mazomenos, Mervyn Singer
Metabolic Flexibility As A Candidate Mechanism For The Development Of Postoperative Morbidity, Pietro Arina, John Whittle, Maciej R Kaczorek, Davide Ferrari, Nicholas Tetlow, Amy Dewar, Robert Stephens, Daniel Martin, S Ramani Moonesinghe, Evangelos B Mazomenos, Mervyn Singer
Peninsula Medical School
BACKGROUND: This study investigates the role of metabolic flexibility in determining perioperative outcomes. Metabolic flexibility, a key feature of metabolic health, is the ability to efficiently switch between different fuel sources (predominantly carbohydrates and fats) depending on energy demands and availability. Given the rapidly changing physiological conditions in the perioperative period, we hypothesized that good metabolic adaptability could mitigate postoperative complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study utilizing a prospectively collected, single-center preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) database of patients undergoing a range of major surgeries between 2012 and 2022. On day 3, patients were categorized into 3 groups …

How Do Community Assets Support Health In A Rural Community? An Ethnographic Case Study, Jennie Hayes, Liz Edwards-Smith, Richard Byng, Kerryn Husk, Katrina Wyatt
Peninsula Medical School
Community assets (including voluntary, community, social enterprise and grassroots initiatives) have the potential to help address health inequalities. There is a growing understanding of the importance of putting communities at the heart of public health to improve population health. Understanding the mechanisms by which grassroots activities support health and wellbeing is important for making commissioning decisions, for community confidence and for the purposes of evaluation. This study takes an ethnographic case study approach to explore one rural community in the south-west of England. We observed activities and interactions, had informal conversations with residents and community leaders and conducted focus groups. …
Composing A Kaleidoscope: A Scholarly Personal Narrative Of Academia In A Time Of Digital Overload, Suzanne Porath
Composing A Kaleidoscope: A Scholarly Personal Narrative Of Academia In A Time Of Digital Overload, Suzanne Porath
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
s Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) explores the experience of fractured academic identity amid illness, remote teaching, and digital saturation. Anchored in the methodology of SPN as described by Nash (2004) this narrative integrates personal storytelling with critical reflection and theoretical engagement. Drawing on Rushkoff’s concept of digiphrenia, Makowka’s fractal identity, and Gergen’s absent presence, the paper examines how academic life in the digital age increasingly demands simultaneous performances of self across disjointed timelines and virtual spaces. Through vignettes of presenting at concurrent conferences, teaching from chemotherapy bays, and supporting a dissertation defense in unlikely places, this piece reflects on the …

Women, Race, Recovery: How Some Of History’S Most Impactful Thinkers Reflect On Their Own Healing, Karol Cooper
Women, Race, Recovery: How Some Of History’S Most Impactful Thinkers Reflect On Their Own Healing, Karol Cooper
Gatherings
With examples from influential women of color feminists, the essay points to some obstacles in the way to developing a true practice of recovery for women of color academics whose research brings them in continual contact with histories and enactments of harm against women and people of color. As women of color in higher education, articulating our health and healing needs in our own terms would help us clear a path to promoting ourselves as whole and healthy persons, in addition to promoting us along a career path. The essay collects reflections on health struggles from famous women of color …
The Power Of Community: Creating Pathways For Women Of Color In Higher Education, Dayanara Vázquez Comas Psyd
The Power Of Community: Creating Pathways For Women Of Color In Higher Education, Dayanara Vázquez Comas Psyd
Gatherings
This essay explores the transformative power of community for women of color navigating the challenges of higher education. Reflecting on personal experiences, it highlights the intersectionality of being both a woman and a member of a minority group in the U.S. Central to overcoming these obstacles is the support of a peer community, which fosters "community healing", a space for shared struggles, validation, and empowerment. The essay calls for intentional efforts to build inclusive communities, mentorship programs, and safe spaces that provide solidarity. It advocates for increased representation at all levels of the higher education journey, viewing it as an …

Introduction: Building Space For Gathering In Hostile Times, Roberta Hurtado
Gatherings
This introduction serves as a means to share with you, the reader, about an upstate New York symposium that occurred in March of 2025. The event aimed to create a space where we could explore the trials, tribulations, and jubilations that women of color in New York higher education experience. Speakers and attendees gathered from all over the state—and, indeed, country—on a cold wintery day in a spirit of togetherness and awareness of where we find ourselves in this moment. We were there to learn and grow, and to find community.

Telepsychiatry For Substance Use Disorders: Evolution From Rapid Covid-19 Pandemic Adoption To Sustainable Integration, Jack Wang
Marshall Journal of Medicine
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, telepsychiatry for substance use disorder (SUD) management was generally an underutilized modality, mainly due to regulatory constraints. Through the pandemic, governmental deregulations rapidly and massively expanded their adoption, bringing out their significant potential to expand access, overcome barriers, and mitigate stigma for individuals seeking addiction care, particularly for rural and underserved populations. This narrative review consolidates the recent research on the growing adoption of telepsychiatry in the management of SUDs. It aims to explore the evidence-based benefits, identify common challenges, and underscore key considerations for its effective and equitable integration into SUD treatment …

(((Qpie)))The Resonant Mind — Learning Andneurocognitive Evolution In The Coherence Era, Teddy Burroughs
Defensive Publications Series
Abstract QPIE (Quantum Perspective Is Everything) 7.6 reframes intelligence itself. Learning, memory, and creativity are not isolated brain events; they are local harmonics in a universal coherence field. This paper translates that revelation into the language of neuroscience, education, and social healing. It outlines how Homo resonans —the next stage of human cognition—emerges through phase alignment among neural, emotional, and social circuits. Drawing on Aetheris probe analytics, we show that compassion, gratitude, and trust (CGT) modulate neural entropy just as tuning stabilizes a resonator. The classroom, the workplace, and the city all become laboratories of resonance.

International Journal on Responsibility
Unaccompanied children and adolescents who migrate from Central America and Mexico into the United States (U.S.) are exposed to and experience trauma throughout the process of migration. These traumatic experiences result in an increasing prevalence of psychiatric illnesses and challenges to treatment. This study presents a psychiatric patient record review of minors and their complex trauma. Unaccompanied migrant minors (UMM) ages 12-17 (28 males and 22 females; n = 50) received comprehensive psychiatric assessments at the El Paso Texas Tech Child and Adolescent Psychiatry outpatient clinic. Their charts were reviewed for psychiatric diagnosis, treatment progress, and trauma experiences before, during, …

Is It Retaliation Or Remediation? Educating Our Learners On The Difference, France M. Leandre, Almari Ginory
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
The goal of this article is to discuss 1 of the questions in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Resident/Fellow Survey, which assesses the fear of retaliation in a program. To better understand the needs of residents and facilitate the reporting of concerns, programs must evaluate and educate residents on the difference between remediation and retaliation.

Spontaneous Pneumomediastinum Following Ingestion Of Bleach, Dish Soap, And Laundry Detergent And Inhalation Of Methamphetamines, Marshall Johnson, Matthew Boss, Alayna S. Buzzetta, Barbara L. Gracious
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Introduction
Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is a rare condition defined by the presence of air in the mediastinum in patients without an observable traumatic cause. Pneumomediastinum is a somewhat rare condition that occurs 1 in every 25 000 individuals, aged 5 to 34 years old, with 76% occurring in men. Pneumomediastinum can further be divided into 2 categories: SPM and traumatic pneumomediastinum. Traumatic pneumomediastinum is most commonly seen with blunt force trauma or any iatrogenic procedures to the chest wall. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum frequently occurs due to air leaking through small alveolar sacs, which rupture within the surrounding bronchovascular sheath. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum …

Capacity Over Cognition: A Case Of High-Risk Disease And Homelessness, Mikalah E. Maury, Avery M. Duncan, Rebecca A. Taylor, Mary Ann Beil, Maulikkumar A. Patel
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
Medical decision-making in indigent patients with baseline cognitive deficits and lack of supportive resources is a difficult problem that reveals many ethical issues. Performing high-level medical procedures (eg, invasive surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy) on these patients without supportive resources brings into question the efficacy and necessity of treatment if it places the patient at higher risk of additional complications and mortality.
Case Presentation
In this article, we present a case of a 62-year-old indigent man with a long history of encephalopathy secondary to alcohol abuse, presenting with an aggressive head and neck cancer impacting his quality of life.

Three Good Things And Family Process, Julia Prouty
Three Good Things And Family Process, Julia Prouty
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
There is a need for adaptive and affordable prevention/intervention strategies to promote happiness, health, and well-being in families. Three Good Things (3GT) is a free exercise from the field of positive psychology meant to shift an individual’s focus and perceptions towards gratitude. 3GT promotes focusing on gratitude by reflecting on what an individual is grateful for from the past day/week. Persons are encouraged to write down and share their 3GT with another individual. A mindset of gratitude is closely associated with improved happiness, health, and well-being. The exercise of reflecting on 3GT is adaptive to most individuals/families. To date, most …
A Case Study On The Use Of Cultural Violence And Its Contribution To The Third Reich's 'Euthanasia' Program, Grace Larsen
A Case Study On The Use Of Cultural Violence And Its Contribution To The Third Reich's 'Euthanasia' Program, Grace Larsen
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The genocidal actions taken by the Third Reich during the mid-20th century were horrific and dehumanizing. While the Holocaust often focuses on the tragic genocide that occurred against the Jewish people carried out by the Third Reich, the genocide that they carried out against the disabled community is often overlooked. With the deaths of tens of thousands of disabled people occurring through this genocide, it is important to understand how this genocide occurred, without any worldwide protest. Nazi Leaders including Alfred Rosenberg, Adolf Hitler, and Ernest Rüdin used widespread cultural indoctrination to dehumanize the disabled community and horrifically justify their …

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impairments in personal, social, academic, or occupational functioning. Despite its universal recognition, perceptions and responses to autism vary widely across different cultural contexts. This paper explores the impact of cultural perspectives on the diagnosis, intervention, and support for individuals with autism. It highlights how cultural beliefs, values, and societal norms shape the understanding and management of ASD, revealing significant differences in diagnostic practices and support systems around the world. The paper discusses how cultural factors influence the interpretation of autism, using case studies from diverse settings, including Africa, Southeast Asia, …
What We Watch On Social Media Makes An Impact, Gracie G. Johnson
What We Watch On Social Media Makes An Impact, Gracie G. Johnson
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Prior research has demonstrated that certain social media content consumed can create unrealistic expectations of themselves; however, some hypothesize that social media provides empowering and supportive spaces. Unfortunately, many studies rely on cross-sectional data, limiting the ability to infer causality. This study looked at one of the most-used social media platforms by teens in the United States, TikTok. For this study, it was predicted that viewing “body check” videos would negatively affect body image. If significant, we could try and restrict those videos from being posted. The findings supported the hypothesis, but not significantly. However, there were quite a few …
Art Therapy In Social Work Practice, Laura Gebur
Art Therapy In Social Work Practice, Laura Gebur
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Art therapy is an emerging practice among mental health professionals looking for new ways to engage with their clients and encourage nonverbal communication. Creativity is a means of processing memories, improving relationships, and strengthening the mind-body connection across a variety of age groups and practice settings. The efficacy of art therapy has led to its integration into social work practice, benefitting a diverse range of client populations within the field. While a lack of macro-level research studies has prevented the implementation of standardized art therapy techniques in social work, clinical research trials have examined art therapy across several areas of …
