Biennial Convention (CONV)
Introduction: Nurses’ cultural competence is vital in improving patients’ experiences and reducing health disparities. Cultural competence should be integrated into nursing curricula to prepare nursing students to deliver culturally competent care. Unfortunately, not all nursing educational practices are culturally competent. Institutions and agencies for advancing nursing education have acknowledged the importance of cultural competence in nursing education. Few studies have critically examined nurse faculty readiness and preparation in cultural competence in the United States. Therefore, we aimed to assess cultural competence among nurse faculty at a large nursing school in the Southwestern United States.
Methods: Using convenience sampling, a cross-sectional, …

First Scholars: Enhanced Institutional Support For First Generation College Students, Genevieve Reside
Masters Projects
First-generation college students (FGCS) represent a large proportion of incoming freshmen at higher education institutions. Despite the having a high amount of FGCS, institution supports do not meet the high level of need presented by this student population. Lacking cultural capital that would otherwise be passed along by college-graduated parents, FGCS must navigate unfamiliar college territory on their own, requiring a high volume of support. This project explores the importance of institutional support on education outcomes for FGCS, proposing a comprehensive social and financial support program. The scholarship program, First Scholars, awards increasing scholarship amounts for subsequent years that students …

Biodiversity Performance Of Living Wall Systems In Urban Environments: A Uk Case Study Of Plant Selection And Substrate Effects On Multi-Taxa Communities, Paul Henry Lunt, James Buckley, Suzanne Mitchell, Gabriel Thomas, Elek Churella, Thomas Richard Murphy
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Urban densification threatens biodiversity, yet conventional greenspace expansion is constrained by limited land availability. Living wall systems (LWS) offer potential biodiversity enhancement through vertical green infrastructure, though their ecological value remains underexplored. This study evaluated the biodiversity performance of three LWS in Plymouth, UK, using multi-taxa surveys to assess invertebrate communities, bird assemblages, and bat activity. A scoping review of 2638 publications revealed limited research on LWS biodiversity, with only 27% of biodiversity-focused papers referencing specific species. Field surveys employed standardised protocols including flower-visiting pollinator observations, spider assessments, soil invertebrate extraction using Tullgren funnels, acoustic bird monitoring, and bat emergence …

“Chords Of Inquiry”: Alternate Guitar Tunings, Harmony, And Text-Music Relations In Joni Mitchell’S Early Songs, Peter Kaminsky, Megan Lyons
Open Access Fund Publications
In the 2003 documentary Woman of Heart and Mind, Joni Mitchell states, “Chords are depictions of emotions. These chords that I was getting by twisting the knobs on the guitar until I could get these chords that I heard inside that suited me, they feel like my feelings. You know, I called them, not knowing, chords of inquiry.” In investigating Mitchell’s music, we address the integration of guitar, harmony, and expression of feeling exemplified by “chords of inquiry.” We take as a corpus her early songs from 1968 to 1972 in which she accompanies herself on guitar. Our study …

BackgroundParent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) has been effectively implemented for autistic youth and their families who need help reducing disruptive behaviors, promoting language development, and enhancing the parent-child relationship. However, like most autism-based interventions, the PCIT protocol was originally adapted for (rather than with or by) the autism community. A new wave of intervention research calls for input from autism advocates throughout each phase of the research process. The present study signifies the first step in the development and implementation of a pilot PCIT program with autistic youth and their families (i.e., PCIT-Autism).MethodsAcademic researchers collaborated alongside an Autism Community Advisory Board …

School And District Leaders’ Understanding Of Technology Organizations’ Cyber Business Practices, Jayejaye Johnson
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Educational technology (EdTech) interoperability throughout cyberspace provides the financial opportunity to collect and sell student privacy information in digital learning environments, challenging school leaders to govern schools and keep children safe. School leaders provide the resources, funding, planning, decision making, and administration for EdTech cybersecurity practices and policies, yet little is known about what public school leaders understand. A quantitative study was designed using primary data collected from an online survey. Four research questions guided this study: What are the differences in cybersecurity practices and policy response scores (1) between male and female school leaders; (2) among leaders with different …

Child Assent Practices In Research: Improving Ethics, Decision-Making, And Inclusivity, David C. Coker, Ketaki Inamdar, Daniel F. Mccleary, Lesley Cottrell
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
The following article addresses a conundrum: What if child assent in research were a fully informed, stand-alone process that empowered all children to discuss meaningfully, negotiate, and decide how and what the research experience would look like? Past research and practices suggest that child assent, when children (youths to 17-year-olds who have not been emancipated) agree to participate in research before, during, and after parents’ or guardians’ consent, is rife with problems that minimize informed participation and prize procedural ethics over true understanding of the processes and autonomous decision-making. Academic articles often lack details, as length requirements and brevity preclude …

Problems Of Faithfulness In The English Translation Of Tayeb Salih’S Masterpiece Season Of Migration To The North: Revisiting Equivalence Theory, Ali Albashir Mohammed Alhaj
UB Journal for Humanities
Translation is a bi-lingual communication activity that should convey the information similar to the original. Consequently, the translator's target is to be faithful to the original wording and maintain the essence of the source language (SL) when he/she conveys a text in the target language (TL). This study was conducted to cast a new light on the cultural problems encountered by Denys Johnson-Davis in his English translation of Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North, specifically in terms of his faithfulness to the ST, and how these can be addressed from various theoretical and practical standpoints about the equivalence …

The Quest For Connection In A Cold And Isolated World: A Psychoanalytical Study On Edward Albee's 'The Zoo Story', Abdulmajeed Abdulqadir Saeed Alhanash
UB Journal for Humanities
This research paper explores the theme of connection in a cold and isolated world through a psychoanalytical lens. It specifically focusses on Edward Albee's one-act play, The Zoo Story, examining how the characters' struggles with loneliness, alienation, and detachment reflect the broader human condition. It illuminates the underlying psychological motivations, anxieties, and desires that shape their actions and relationships. The psychological approach is used to analyze the social isolation and loneliness of characters in the play. Analyzing this theme psychologically illuminates the factors contributing to Jerry’s sense of isolation: lack of meaningful social connections, societal pressures, and personal experiences that …

Ancient Chivalry And Modern Masculinity, Henry Jones Jones
Arkansas Liberal Arts and Humanities Day
I’m dissecting toxic masculinity in society through the lens of chivalry, as shown in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Knights were held to a code of chivalry that they used to interact with others and to wage war, a code heavily on display within the text of Sir Gawain. I’ve expanded into the fields of psychology, biology, and warfare to determine if there is a link between ancient chivalry and how men act today.
Current Inefficiencies In The Juvenile Justice System: Evidence-Based Solutions, Janarie Johann Prince
Current Inefficiencies In The Juvenile Justice System: Evidence-Based Solutions, Janarie Johann Prince
Arkansas Liberal Arts and Humanities Day
The juvenile justice system was designed to rehabilitate youth offenders rather than punish them, but inefficiencies continue to hinder this goal. This research examines how institutional practices contribute to the unequal treatment of juveniles based on socioeconomic factors by analyzing scholarly literature, case studies, and data from government reports. The presentation highlights how juveniles are arrested, charged, and sentenced. It also explores how stereotypes influence perceptions of delinquency and how over-criminalization of behaviors has harmed efforts to rehabilitate juveniles and reduce recidivism. The proposed solutions include evidence-based practices like cognitive-behavioral therapy to improve educational opportunities and help incarcerated youth keep …
Religion: How Faith And Science Unite Society, James Tester
Religion: How Faith And Science Unite Society, James Tester
Arkansas Liberal Arts and Humanities Day
Over a billion people follow the modern Catholic church, yet one man, Dante, greatly shaped Catholicism as society now sees it today through his writings. Religion is central to humanity, influencing thousands of people’s lives every day, but it can be changed drastically by a new perspective. How, and why, does one person, or a group of people, completely alter a religion and its values? I am examining religion through texts such as Dante’s Inferno and theological studies to catch a glimpse of how societies shape religion and beliefs. Every religion has its own rules and structures, often contradictory to …

Students’ Use Of Chatgpt As A Writing Tool, Hannah K. Young
Arkansas Liberal Arts and Humanities Day
Over the past decade, educational technology has drastically evolved. Generative artificial intelligence chatbots such as ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, have recently become popular resources for students seeking academic support. While articles discuss whether students should use generative AI, little research exists on how students engage with it in academic settings. This study analyzes student interactions with ChatGPT, where participants enrolled in College English were tasked with writing a one-page essay. This decision aimed at providing a diverse range of students from different disciplines and skill sets, rather than a large group of English majors in a higher-level course. Without specific …
