Grounded in Tedeschi and Calhoun’s Posttraumatic Growth Theory and Pargament’s Religious Coping Theory, this study utilized the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), the Brief Religious Coping Scale (Brief RCOPE), and the Impact of Event Scale–Revised (IES-R) adapted for COVID-19 to assess trauma exposure, …

An Examination Of Perceptions Of Strangers' Trustworthiness: A Comparison Of Religious Beliefs, Angelia Theresa Hogan Dec 2025

An Examination Of Perceptions Of Strangers' Trustworthiness: A Comparison Of Religious Beliefs, Angelia Theresa Hogan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

When Panikkar wrote that the “meeting of religions is an inescapable fact of today,” he was describing the very premise of this study. The continual social interactions between people of different faiths and beliefs require an understanding of both perceptions and prejudices in order to help foster trust and cooperation in a global setting. The availability of current data on unimpeded and immediate perceptions of the social trustworthiness of a photographed face on the part of people of different religious beliefs is sorely lacking. This study examined whether people with six different religious affiliations assigned different levels of trustworthiness to …

Nonspecific chronic low back pain affects most people through-out the world at some point within their lives, negatively impacting 80%-90% of the overall population, their families, and their communities. Thus far, the outcome of most studies indicate that the best form of treatment for this specific problem is a form of resistance training exercises, core stability exercises, mobilization, manual therapy, and or proprioceptive training with no consensus on which provides the best outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore an individualized approach in treatment utilizing methods shown to improve muscle tonus or “stability” in muscles of the abdomen, …

Emotion Regulation Differences Between Gender And Sexuality Groups: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Jake Camp, Emma Blundell, Patrick Smith, Katharine Rimes Dec 2025

Emotion Regulation Differences Between Gender And Sexuality Groups: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Jake Camp, Emma Blundell, Patrick Smith, Katharine Rimes

School of Psychology

Gender and sexual minority (GSM) people are at increased risk of mental health difficulties compared to their cisgender-heterosexual peers. This is likely because of exposure to minority stressors. Emotion regulation difficulties have been proposed as an important mechanism for mental health disparities in GSM populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined whether GSM groups differ from cisgender and heterosexual groups in global and specific aspects of emotion regulation (e.g., emotion awareness, strategies, impulse control, cognitive appraisal, and emotion suppression), and whether emotion dysregulation mediated the relationship between GSM identity and mental health outcomes. We identified 40 eligible studies, of which …

Breaking Down Barriers, Raven D. Robles Dec 2025

Breaking Down Barriers, Raven D. Robles

Masters Theses (Archived)

This qualitative narrative study examines the educational experiences of first-generation Hispanic female college students who dropped out of higher education early before obtaining a degree. First-generation students are a rapidly growing population, for whom advanced education represents a vital pathway to financial stability and breaking the cycle of low socioeconomic status. Despite high aspirations, many first-generation students face significant challenges, leading to high attrition rates. Using a narrative research approach involving semi-structured interviews with three former students, this study addressed the question: "How have the school experiences of Hispanic females, first-generation college students, shaped their decisions to leave college before …

Toward Climate Resilient Cities: Endorsing Green Justice Amid Unequal Distribution And Disparities In Fast-Sprawling Urban Nagpur, Prajakta Pimpalshende, Manu Thomas, Jayshree Shukla, Shruti Lahoti, Shalini Dhyani

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Population expansion and accelerated land development frequently overlook the inclusion of green infrastructure, leading to disparities in Urban Green Space (UGS) distribution. In rapidly urbanizing cities of the Global South, ensuring socio-ecological connectivity is vital for promoting sustainable, climate-resilient, multifunctional landscapes. This study uses Nagpur, a rapidly expanding Indian city, as a case study to investigate spatial inequities in UGS access through the lens of green justice. We employed the Demand Supply Gap assessment (World Health Organization and Urban and Regional Development Plans Formulation and Implementation, Government of India guidelines), the 3-30-300 green space rule as a guiding principle to …

Examining The Role Of Metacognitive Strategies In Sight-Reading Instruction: Insights From Middle School Chorus Teachers, Krystin M. Kicklighter

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Sight-reading in middle school chorus classes is emphasized more heavily due to the standards of learning. Teachers use various approaches to teach sight-reading. One strategy teachers can use is metacognition during the sight-reading process. However, there is limited research on teachers' perspectives on metacognition in middle school. Metacognition involves self-awareness, self-evaluation, and self-regulation. By engaging in these activities, learners can gain better control over their thought processes. This is especially important for music educators, since music learning and practice involve many metacognitive concepts. This qualitative-hermeneutic study explored middle school chorus teachers' perceptions of sight-reading practice and how they incorporate metacognition …
