Precarity And The Social Organization Of Affect In Public Libraries, Naomi E. Nichols Dr., Phil Canuel, Maggie Pearson, Kathrine Williams
Precarity And The Social Organization Of Affect In Public Libraries, Naomi E. Nichols Dr., Phil Canuel, Maggie Pearson, Kathrine Williams
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
Material and felt precarity are increasing in Ontario cities, impacted by housing and food unaffordability, an unpredictable drug supply, rising homelessness, and unmet social and health needs. The social relations of precarity play out in public spaces like libraries, changing how people’s work in, and experiences of, public space are organized. In this institutional ethnography (IE), we draw on 38 interviews with library staff and visitors to describe how shifts in the activities undertaken by library visitors (i.e., an increase in survival-related work) is co-ordered with, and re-shaping the work of library staff. Beginning with the standpoint of library staff, …

Arts-Based Experiential Learning And Human Flourishing: A Perma-Informed Case Study Of Community Mural Making, Lindsay A. Beddes, Karen Yescavage, Krista Bridgmon
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
The worsening mental health epidemic among college students is marked by significant risk for loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Given that the demand for mental health care is outpacing institutional capacity, creative solutions are needed to augment traditional reactive interventions. In this qualitative research, we used narrative case study to explore the transformative power of community mural-making as experiential learning. Drawing on Seligman’s PERMA model (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment) we investigated how creative expression can cultivate positive psychological states to help students flourish (1991; 2011; 2018). Mural making promotes the crucial skills of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Outdoor public …

Principles, Frameworks And Challenges Underpinning Holistic Education In The 21st Century, Kumar Laxman
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Holistic education is an educational paradigm that is gaining increasing attention in educational circles due to it being eclectic and inclusive in nature. It attempts to embed a wholesome approach to life including spiritual and philosophical ideals in its pedagogical elements to foster a more fulsome development of the individual. In this paper, research literature is parsed through and content analysed to gain a deeper understanding of the historical and curricular underpinnings of the holistic education movement through a theoretical interpretive lens. The beginnings and evolution of the holistic education movement are examined in conjunction with the broad definitions of …

Palestinian Theatre Studies: The Emergence Of A Field, Noor Shihadeh
Regards
This article analyses the emergence of Palestinian theatre studies, a field of research bound to the modern history of Palestine and to the settler colonial violence that marks it. This violence strikes people, their cultural production and the very possibility of preserving it, shaping in turn how scholarship circulates and where it can be conducted. Studies on Palestinian theatre have nonetheless appeared since the 1960s. The article examines them through a multilingual literature review (Arabic, English, French, Italian, Hebrew) and identifies three main lines of research: a historical-documentary approach, a socio-political and anthropological approach, and a body of studies devoted …

Cumulative Reasonableness: A Doctrine Of The Combined Effect Of State Intrusions, Tonja Jacobi
Cumulative Reasonableness: A Doctrine Of The Combined Effect Of State Intrusions, Tonja Jacobi
Texas A&M Law Review
The Supreme Court has recognized that a single state action, such as forced surgery to retrieve a bullet as evidence, can be so intrusive as to be unreasonable, even when police have probable cause and a warrant. Yet, the Court permits significant intrusions into a person’s privacy and bodily integrity when the state acts in multiple steps. It permits police to, among other things: subject a person to a stop, even when that stop was driven by racial discrimination; use evidence found in a search of the person, even when the stop was illegal; arrest that person, even when the …

Korelasi Foreign Language Anxiety Dengan Performansi Berbicara Bahasa Mandarin Peserta Didik Sma Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang, Kharisma Budi Setyawati, Lukluk Ul Muyassaroh, Herri Akhmad Bukhori
Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
This study aims to describe the Mandarin speaking performance of eleventh-grade IBB students at the Laboratory High School of Universitas Negeri Malang and to examine the relationship between foreign language anxiety (FLA) and Mandarin speaking performance. A quantitative correlational design was applied to 24 students selected through total sampling. Anxiety levels were measured using an adapted Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS; Horwitz et al., 1986), while speaking performance was assessed through role-play dialogues scored with an analytic rubric. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, a linearity test, and Pearson product-moment correlation. Students’ FLA fell into …
Individual And Community-Level Trauma And Resiliency From Tornadoes, Taylor M. Guerin
Individual And Community-Level Trauma And Resiliency From Tornadoes, Taylor M. Guerin
Master of Arts in Human Services
This research paper’s goal was to examine the extent and impact of tornado-related PTSD on individual and community levels in relation to factors such as property damage, mass displacement, cumulative trauma, and seasonal retraumatization. The United States has the most tornado touchdowns globally, placing communities in supercell-prone areas, including Tornado Alley, at higher risk of repeated storm trauma that can affect emotional well-being, sense of safety, and overall financial security (Strader et al., 2024). This researcher utilized a comprehensive literature review approach to examine rates of PTSD, the long-term effects of tornado recovery, the risk of community-level trauma, and to …
Strategic Messaging As An Essential Element Of U.S. Biodeterrence, Part One: Communicating Capability In An Era Of Escalating Biological Threats, James Giordano
Strategic Messaging As An Essential Element Of U.S. Biodeterrence, Part One: Communicating Capability In An Era Of Escalating Biological Threats, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
Strategic messaging plays a critical role in U.S. biodeterrence by shaping how potential adversaries perceive American preparedness, capabilities, and resolve. In this article, Dr. James Giordano discusses how advances in artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and other emerging technologies are changing the nature of biological threats and their implications for national security and military operations.
Dr. Giordano argues that effective biodeterrence requires more than protective technologies and response capabilities. It also depends on credible communication that demonstrates U.S. preparedness, influences adversary decision-making, and reduces uncertainty. He emphasizes the importance of communicating both capabilities and limitations without compromising operational security, strengthening deterrence …
Patriotism From The Past To The Present: Inclusive And Exclusive Pratriotism As Powerful Forces In American History And Trump’S Presidency, Nicole Burgon
The Compass
What is patriotism? Is it standing for the “Star-Spangled Banner” before every sports game? Is it displaying the American flag in front of a house? While Americans often associate patriotism with these symbolic gestures, American patriotism is an attitude that has been present since the start of our nation’s history. Patriotism can be defined as a feeling of devotion, attachment, commitment, or support for one’s country. It is, however, more than a single dictionary definition. In 1946, Merle Curti’s The Roots of American Loyalty traced American patriotism throughout history as “a pattern of emotions and ideas.” In a 1999 article …
