Is High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Field Stimulation More Effective Than Pelvic Floor Muscle Training In Treating Stress Urinary Incontinence In Women?, Monica Friedman
Nursing | Senior Theses
INTRODUCTION: Stress urinary incontinence, an involuntary loss of urine during physical exertion or effort, affects a disproportionately large number of women worldwide. Although pelvic floor muscle training is the first-line treatment for urinary incontinence, long term adherence is low, and therefore, is usually not an effective treatment. Medications may be costly and aren’t always effective; surgery is invasive and often not appropriate. This condition warrants further studies to find more effective solutions.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether or not focused electromagnetic field therapy is more effective than pelvic floor muscle training in treating stress urinary continence in women.

Gut Microbiota And The Development Of Type 2 Diabetes, Janet Ryan
Gut Microbiota And The Development Of Type 2 Diabetes, Janet Ryan
Nursing | Senior Theses
This paper explores the question: Can interventions focusing on healing the gut microbiome of a prediabetic patient prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes? Diabetes is a major health problem that is becoming the biggest epidemic of the 21st century. Efforts to derail the progression of disrupted blood glucose metabolism are often futile leaving patients frustrated with a lifelong burden of disease management. Recent studies suggest that collectively the gut microbiome acts as an endocrine organ and that injury to this “organ” can lead to dysfunctional glucose regulation. A comprehensive literature review revealed that further studies are …
Social Media Posts About Racism Leads To Evaluative Backlash For Black Job Applicants, Simon Howard, Kalen Kennedy, Francisco Tejeda
Social Media Posts About Racism Leads To Evaluative Backlash For Black Job Applicants, Simon Howard, Kalen Kennedy, Francisco Tejeda
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Black Americans post about race and race-related issues on social media more than any other racial group. In this study, we investigated whether Black Americans who post about racism on social networking sites (i.e., Facebook) experience evaluative backlash during the employee selection process. Participants (N = 154) were given a Black job candidate’s cover letter, resume, and a scanned printout of their social media. Depending on what condition they were randomly assigned to, the applicant’s social media contained posts about racism or posts that were race neutral. Results indicated that Black individuals whose posts were about racism were evaluated …

A Patient-Centered Asthma Management Communication Intervention For Rural Latino Children: Protocol For A Waiting-List Randomized Controlled Trial, Robin Dawson, Sue P. Heiney, De Anne Hilfinger Messias, Dennis Ownby
Faculty Publications
Background: Rural Latino children with asthma suffer high rates of uncontrolled asthma symptoms, emergency department visits, and repeat hospitalizations. This vulnerable population must negotiate micro- and macrolevel challenges that impact asthma management, including language barriers, primary care access, parental time off from work, insurance coverage, distance from specialty sites, and documentation status. There are few proven interventions that address asthma management embedded within this unique context. Objective: Using a bio-ecological approach, we will determine the feasibility of a patient-centered collaborative program between rural Latino children with asthma and their families, school-based nursing programs, and primary care providers, facilitated by the …

The Move Framework: Meanings, Observations, Viewpoints, And Experiences In Processes Of Social Change, Seamus A. Power, Gabriel M. Velez
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Social psychologists are often criticized for failing to capture the dynamic nature of psychological processes. We present a novel framework to address this problem. The MOVE framework contends that to comprehend complex, contradictory, and divergent patterns of thought, affect, and behavior within changing, real-world contexts, it is necessary to undertake ecologically valid research that is attentive to the lived experiences and meaning-making processes of culturally embedded individuals over time. A focus on meanings, observations, viewpoints, and experiences is essential for social psychological research that holistically captures how people construct, understand, respond, position, and act over time within changing …
Recalibrating Normalcy: Healing Perspectives Of Provisional Critical Care Nurse Leaders, Johaun T. Jackson
Recalibrating Normalcy: Healing Perspectives Of Provisional Critical Care Nurse Leaders, Johaun T. Jackson
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this research was twofold: to explore the paradox existing between nursing as a healing occupation and the normalized violence occurring within the profession, as such, to inform from the perspectives of healing and cultural recalibration; and, secondly, to investigate the perspectives of charge nurses who may or may not have recognized psychological trauma, transformed pain, or transcended woundedness from lateral violence in the workplace. With the deployment of a lifeworld, phenomenological method, combined with the nurse as wounded healer theory, this study qualitatively measured and thematically captured the descriptive essence of nine provisional critical care leaders or …
Assessing K-12 Leaders’ Level Of Critical Consciousness And Social Justice Predisposition In An Effort To Address Inequity In Suburban School Districts, Lucia Kaempffe
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive phenomenological research study was to identify the level of critical consciousness of kindergarten through Grade 12 building leaders (principals and assistant principals) in suburban districts with graduation rates of 90% or above. The study also sought to understand the leaders’ predisposition toward social justice in an effort to redesign and implement educational structures that attend more holistically to a diverse student population. Through nine semi-structured interviews, reflection, and sharing, this study was able to gauge the participants’ existing levels of critical consciousness based on their past experiences. The data was coded and interpreted to …

Supervision And Evaluation Practices That Impact Teacher Learning: A Case Study Of Rural Teachers’ Perspectives, Jennifer L. Sinsebox
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to gain an in-depth understanding of what factors of the teacher supervision and evaluation process in a small, rural school district impacted the extent to which teachers learned and improved instructional practices. The case study explored if teachers in a small, rural school district experienced formative supervision practices that helped them learn or improve their teaching practices. Three implications emerged from the study. First, authentic leadership promotes teacher growth. Second, authentic leadership ensures empowered postconferences, and third, authentic leadership participates in walkthroughs to provide teachers with feedback. This study provides recommendations …
Millennial Job Satisfaction And Retention In Technical And Business Professions In The United States, Amy Jean Considine
Millennial Job Satisfaction And Retention In Technical And Business Professions In The United States, Amy Jean Considine
Education Doctoral
Millennials have been found to have higher turnover than previous generations, costing organizations and the U.S. economy over $30 billion annually (Adkins, 2016). Higher turnover for millennials has both short-term and long-term implications for organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of job satisfaction, demographic characteristics, and retention for millennials working in technical and business professions in the United States. Using a quantitative, postpositivist paradigmatic design, this study employed the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) short form (University of Minnesota, 2016), the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS-6) (Roodt, 2004), and demographic questions that were adapted into an electronic …

The Black Man’S Experience As A Teacher In K-12: Examining The Insight, Education, And Challenges To Diversifying The Teaching Population, Natasha A. Oates
Education Doctoral
The K-12 teaching profession is dominated by White females, with only 2% of Black male K-12 teachers in the job. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the insight, education, and challenges Black males face to diversify the K-12 classroom. As the vital instrument of the study, using in-depth, semi-structured interviews, the researcher examined five New York State Black male K-12 educators to discover their perspectives and experiences regarding why Black male educators are underrepresented in the K-12 setting. Five formulated meanings emerged, representing the participants’ experience that included: (a) career motivation, (b) absence of diversity, (c) …

Professional Development For Student Employees Of Color, Monica Duran
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to conduct a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project with undergraduate student employees at a large research institution in order to reimagine the career and leadership development programs so that they are responsive to, and supportive of, students who identify as people of color. This would be done using a framework of Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth theory (2005). The participants of this study were five undergraduate student employees who worked within a single department in a division of Student Affairs. The methodology used was Participatory Action Research, which is a methodology in which the researcher …

Employee Engagement As A Shared Responsibility: A Study Of Engagement Strategies Employed By Legal Assistants, Thomas A. Steele
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify strategies used by legal assistants to engage, stay engaged, and reengage, when appropriate, in their work, in particular when common organizational efforts fall short or do not exist. Constructivism and job demands-resources (JD-R) were the primary frameworks for understanding and analyzing the phenomenon of developing engagement strategies.
Qualitative data were drawn through semi-structured interviews with 16 legal assistants. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. Trustworthiness and validity were enhanced by using multiple respondents and allowing each to review the transcripts for accuracy, fairness, and clarity. The transcriptions were then analyzed for themes. …
Deontic Constraints Are Maximizing Rules, Matthew Hammerton
Deontic Constraints Are Maximizing Rules, Matthew Hammerton
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Deontic constraints prohibit an agent performing acts of a certain type even when doing so will prevent more instances of that act being performed by others. In this article I show how deontic constraints can be interpreted as either maximizing or non-maximizing rules. I then argue that they should be interpreted as maximizing rules because interpreting them as non-maximizing rules results in a problem with moral advice. Given this conclusion, a strong case can be made that consequentialism provides the best account of deontic constraints.

Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Objective: We investigated whether men's social confidence in an initial, opposite-sex chatting context can be improved through a video tutorial and the extent to which being perceived as socially confident results in being seen as more romantically desirable and worthy of future contact. Method: Women chatted with men who had received or not received a tutorial on how to handle speed-dating chats (Study 1: N = 129; Study 2: N = 60) or with male targets selected for having high versus moderate confidence in handling initial, opposite-sex encounters (Study 3: N = 46). Results: Tutorial-trained men felt more confident going …
Relativized Rankings, Matthew Hammerton
Relativized Rankings, Matthew Hammerton
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In traditional consequentialism the good is position-neutral. A single evaluative ranking of states of affairs is correct for everyone, everywhere regardless of their positions. Recently, position-relative forms of consequentialism have been developed. These allow for the correct rankings of states to depend on connections that hold between the state being evaluated and the position of the evaluator. For example, perhaps being an agent who acts in a certain state requires me to rank that state differently from someone else who lacks this connection. In this chapter several different kinds of position-relative rankings related to agents, times, physical locations, and possible …

Text As Data: An Overview, Kenneth Benoit
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
When it comes to textual data, the fields of political science and international relations face a genuine embarrassment of riches. Never before has so much text been so readily available on such a wide variety of topics that concern our discipline. Legislative debates, party manifestos, committee transcripts, candidate and other political speeches, lobbying documents, court opinions, laws – not only are all recorded and published today, but in many cases this is in a readily available form that is easily converted into structured data for systematic analysis.
Care, Control, And Color: A Conversation About Disparities In School Disciplinary Practices, Diana Wandix-White
Care, Control, And Color: A Conversation About Disparities In School Disciplinary Practices, Diana Wandix-White
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications (Archived)
Disciplinary practices teachers use in their classrooms frequently result in life-altering consequences for students who are historically marginalized and struggling to meet normalized standards of academic success. Research suggests teachers often lack the skill needed to connect with students, manage their classrooms, and administer corrective action that is equitable, reasonable, and effective without being excessive and detrimental to the student’s future. This disconnection and lack of judgment is frequently attributed to 1) the cultural mismatch that exists between the majority U.S. teacher who is a young, White female, and the growing diverse population of students; 2) teachers’ deficit view of …
Stratified Security Communities: Transatlantic Distrust And Identity Divergence, Afra Maike Herr
Stratified Security Communities: Transatlantic Distrust And Identity Divergence, Afra Maike Herr
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
With mounting pressure by the United States directly and through their strategic shift and slow abdication of leadership towards Asia and away from the transatlantic community, European states have growing incentive to cooperate more strongly and integrate their defense and security efforts. The absence of such a trend of integration points to internal barriers to growing cooperation countering the external dynamic. Utilizing the theory of security communities, this thesis explores German, French, and British understanding of leadership, defense, and their respective public opinions. Focusing on the security identities of all three nations and their visions for the community as well …

University Course Evaluations: A Study Of The Influence Of Faculty, Student, And Course Variables, Tyesha De’Shuan Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Course evaluations impact faculty’ annual evaluations and have become somewhat controversial, yet course evaluations in faculty evaluations persist as a common practice across universities. While many scholars find this success-based tool effective in assessing teaching effectiveness, others question the validity and reliability of this measurement and are opposed to using this tool as a mean of determining faculty members’ success. The purpose of this study is to provide a more in-depth examination of course evaluations by analyzing faculty, student, and course variables. Analyses were performed to address the following research question: “To what degree do faculty gender, faculty race, faculty …

Traces Of Social Psychology In Research Studies Of Selected Higher Education Institutions In And About Southern Luzon, Philippines, Louise S. Villanueva
Traces Of Social Psychology In Research Studies Of Selected Higher Education Institutions In And About Southern Luzon, Philippines, Louise S. Villanueva
Journal Article
Social psychology builds on the strength of two disciplines. As it is considered the intersection of sociology and psychology, it analyzes how individuals view and influence each other’s behavior. To find out if social psychology permeates the different topics that students undertake, the researchers conducted a systematic review of research studies in 12 higher education institutions in Southern Luzon. The systematic review permitted content analysis of abstracts to identify and compare key results that these studies obtained. Results showed that students dealt with these topics in social psychology: (1) self in the social context; (2) social cognition and perception; (3) …

Re-Thinking The Process For Administering Oaths And Affirmations, Colton Fehr
Re-Thinking The Process For Administering Oaths And Affirmations, Colton Fehr
Dalhousie Law Journal
Courts around the world require witnesses to swear an oath to a religious deity or affirm to tell the truth before providing testimony. It is widely thought that such a process has the potential to give rise to unnecessary bias against witnesses based on their religious beliefs or lack thereof. Scholars have offered two main prescriptions to remedy this problem: (i) abolish the oath and have all witnesses promise to tell the truth; or (ii) require oath-swearing witnesses to invoke a non-specific reference to God. The former proposal is problematic as it rests on the unproven assertion that giving an …

Responsible Scholarship In A Crisis: A Plea For Fairness In Academic Discourse On Carbon Pricing References, Stepan Wood, Meinhard Doelle, Dayna N. Scott
Dalhousie Law Journal
This article offers a critical review of a paper Professor Dwight Newman recently published on the constitutionality of the federal government’s national carbon pricing legislation and the Saskatchewan and Ontario court decisions upholding the law. Rather than engage with the substance of Professor Newman’s article, the authors consider whether it respects the norms of rigorous and fair inquiry that enable constructive scholarly debate. The authors conclude that it does not, and that the consequences for the Supreme Court’s resolution of the carbon pricing reference cases could be significant.

Perceived Partner Responsiveness, Pain, And Sleep: A Dyadic Study Of Military-Connected Couples, Annamarie S. O'Neill, Cynthia Mohr, Todd Bodner, Leslie Hammer
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Objective: The health-promoting influence of supportive close relationships has been extensively documented, yet the mechanisms of this effect are still being clarified. Leading researchers have theorized that examining particular interpersonal interactions and the mediating intrapersonal processes they facilitate is the key to understanding how close relationships benefit health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of perceived partner responsiveness (PPR) on pain and sleep quality via affect in a sample of veterans and spouses (collectively called military-connected couples). Method: Military-connected couples (N = 162) completed 32 days of daily diaries. Mediated actor-partner interdependence models were conducted using …

Employees Support As A Determinant Of Merger Success: Exploring The Organizational Context And Its Interventions During Post-Merger Integration, Abdulla Humaid Saif Aljarwan Alshamsi

Mergers is an extreme form of organizational change, which usually has an adverse impact on the merging organizations employees’ wellbeing. In literature it was argued that organizational integration after merger, which is referred to as Post-Merger Integration (PMI) is usually resisted by employees, which is considered as a major contributor to the high failure rates of mergers. It was further argued that employees’ resistance toward integration is attributed to stress, uncertainty, ambiguity and lack of clarity on the changes that merger and integration initiate. Therefore, PMI activities were assumed to psychologically traumatize employees and jeopardize their sense of belonging, attachment, …

This study examines if PR education adequately prepares students for the workplace, particularly in the practice of ethics in the context of Singapore, which has been described as one of “Asia’s economic tigers” (BBC, 2018). This study, thus, aims to first, elucidate the state of PR education specifically in relation to how PR ethics is taught in Singapore. Second, it examines how ethics education prepares students for the workplace in Singapore. Data comes from examining the syllabi of 14 universities in Singapore, both local and international, and interviews with 20 academics and practitioners. Findings suggest there are varying degrees in …

Motivation Purity Bias: Expression Of Extrinsic Motivation Undermines Perceived Intrinsic Motivation And Engenders Bias In Selection Decisions, Rellie Derfler-Rozin, Marko Pitesa
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Organizational selection decisions often involve an exchange of information between candidates and decision makers as to why candidates are motivated to work in the given position. Drawing on popular management myths as our overarching framework, we theorize that candidates’ expressions of extrinsic motivation lead decision makers to infer that the candidate is less intrinsically motivated, leading to bias against such candidates. We term this effect motivation purity bias, and argue that it emerges despite ample evidence, which we review, showing that penalizing expressed extrinsic motivation is not only unfair to candidates but also counterproductive from the standpoint of maximizing future …
The Moderating Role Of Psychological Inflexibility In The Relationship Between Minority Stress, Substance Misuse, And Suicidality In Lgb+ Adolescents, Sean N. Weeks
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Adolescence is a difficult time, especially for those who do not identify as heterosexual (e.g., gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, pansexual; LGB+). Increased rates of substance abuse and suicidality are well documented outcomes that tend to be worse in the LGB+ adolescent community than in mainstream groups. Minority stress, the effect of unique stressors experienced by those in the LGB+ community explained by external and societal influences, has been accepted within the research community as a theory used to explain the health disparities seen in this group. This study proposed a possible further explanation, in addition to minority stress, that helps …

Transforming Care In Cornwall: A Review Of The Quality Of The Lives Of People With Learning Disabilities A Decade Post‐Discharge From Hospital, A Niven, L Gamman, A Webb, R Goodey, R Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Accessible summary The government wants people with learning disabilities and/or autism to move out of hospitals back to their homes. Cornwall did this in 2007, and we asked the people who moved and their carers how they are now. They have generally done well, and nearly all have stayed in their homes with lots of support. Various factors such as accommodation, social network, skill acquisition and impact of their past were explored. 1.1 Background In the light of the current national guidance to reduce the number of inpatient learning disability beds, a review was completed of the quality of lives …
