Stigma-Based Credentials: Reentry, Record-Based Exclusion, And The Rights Of Permatemps, Sarah Sallen Oct 2026

Stigma-Based Credentials: Reentry, Record-Based Exclusion, And The Rights Of Permatemps, Sarah Sallen

San Diego Law Review

Employers’ use of background checks to exclude long-term temporary workers (“permatemps”) with criminal records from permanent employment —despite proven performance—creates a hidden barrier to advancement in the labor market.  Permatemping, where workers remain in the same role for months or years through a staffing agency, has grown alongside the rapid expansion of temporary work, which has nearly tripled since the 1990s. U.S. staffing agencies now hire nearly 13 million temporary and contract workers each year, and a significant portion of this workforce has criminal records.  For many, staffing agencies are not just a last resort, but a deliberate pathway to …

(Re)Writing The Narrative: Study Abroad In Ghana As A Catalyst To (Re)Frame Black Education, Amira Nash, Monique Cottman, Corey Breiten

Occasional Paper Series

Three Black educators including one instructor, one preservice teacher, and one inservice educator, highlight their experiences participating in a study abroad program in Ghana. Each author shares their personal narrative as a Black educator in a predominantly white educational context in the U.S. Midwest participating in the Ghana study abroad program. For Authors 2 and 3, their first visit to the continent of Africa, reflecting on these experiences through the lens of (re)membering in education. We conclude with a discussion highlighting how these experiences inform and strengthen our collective efforts towards reimagining educational equity in our local community.

(Re)Membering As Resistance: Learning From My Grandma’S Story In A Time Of Historical Erasure, Akilah K. Lyons-Moore

Occasional Paper Series

In the current moment of historical erasure—marked by book bans, curricular restrictions, and political efforts to sanitize discussions of race—(re)membering becomes a pedagogical imperative. Drawing on Morrison’s (1987) articulation of (re)membering and Black feminist theories of memory (Collins, 2000; Hartman, 2008; hooks, 1994), this paper uses narrative inquiry to trace the intergenerational educational journeys of a Black rural Southern woman born in 1914 and her granddaughter, a contemporary teacher educator. Through autobiography and lived experience, this paper examines how personal and communal histories counter disremembering (Trouillot, 1995) and the politics of being forgotten. By weaving together these two lives—rooted in …

Beyond The Chalkboard: Black Oral Traditions And The Kitchen Table As Pedagogy, Gerald D. Smith Jr Oct 2026

Beyond The Chalkboard: Black Oral Traditions And The Kitchen Table As Pedagogy, Gerald D. Smith Jr

Occasional Paper Series

This article positions the kitchen table as a vital pedagogical archive within Black educational history. Drawing on the work of various Black scholars, it argues that domestic spaces—kitchen tables, living rooms, basements, and barbershops have long functioned as fugitive classrooms where Black communities cultivated knowledge, identity, and political consciousness beyond the constraints of formal schooling. Using Carrie Mae Weems’ Kitchen Table Series as a central metaphor, the article traces how oral traditions, storytelling, and community dialogue preserved Black intellectual traditions during eras of segregation, educator displacement, and systemic erasure throughout history. Highlighting Black feminist educators such as Anna Julia Cooper, …

Freedom Is Taught Here: Freedom Schools And The Radical Tradition Of Intergenerational Community Learning In Black Education, Trayc D. Freeman, Wintre F. Johnson, Tiffany D. Meadows, Christine Onyinyechi-Uju Emuka, Naila A. Smith

Occasional Paper Series

The Black American community has always understood the power of literacy and education, and the importance of Black self-sufficiency to attain these. The establishment of Freedom Schools during the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi is an actualization of that understanding. Since 1995, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) has carried on the work and legacy, with Freedom Schools still taking place all over the United States. For two summers, we, researchers from the University of Virginia, have had the opportunity to partner with a CDF Freedom School as part of a mixed-method research study. This essay serves as a reflection and …

College Students’ And Teachers’ Biases Regarding School Children Based On Appearance, Sex, And Clothing, Lauren K. Decoste, Terry F. Pettijohn Ii

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This research explored how appearance, sex, and clothing differences influence adults’ perceptions of primary school students across two studies. Male students were predicted to be rated higher in academic ability, behavior, and likeability compared to female students, while formally dressed students were expected to receive more favorable ratings than informally dressed students. Study 1 included college students (N = 160), and Study 2 included employed teachers (N = 112). Participants rated formally and informally dressed male and female students on perceived behavioral, academic, and social skills, likeability, and engagement. Results showed that model sex influenced several perceptions, with male students …

Synthesizing And Scoring Operational Process Graphs From Unstructured Documents, Hariprasad Rengarajan, Bhasha Agrawal, Kunal Kaul, Rahul Jindal Oct 2026

Synthesizing And Scoring Operational Process Graphs From Unstructured Documents, Hariprasad Rengarajan, Bhasha Agrawal, Kunal Kaul, Rahul Jindal

Defensive Publications Series

Mapping complex operational workflows across isolated, unstructured procedural articles is difficult for traditional process mining or graph extraction tools. Disclosed systems and methods implement a multi-stage deterministic pipeline to transform unstructured documents into a canonical, cycle-condensed directed acyclic graph (DAG). The system performs a single linear pass to extract a structured state contract formalizing procedural inputs and outputs for each document. An inverted index maps producer document outputs to consumer document inputs to synthesize the directed graph. The resulting graph and constituent nodes are processed to condense procedural cycles and evaluated via quantitative scoring models to identify operational bottlenecks, protect …

Overqualified Or Misjudged? Rethinking Selection Validity In Recruitment, Hisham Al Ghunaimi Oct 2026

Overqualified Or Misjudged? Rethinking Selection Validity In Recruitment, Hisham Al Ghunaimi

AUIQ Humanities and Social Sciences

The term ``overqualified'' remains common in recruitment, yet its validity as a pre-entry rejection category is increasingly difficult to defend. Using a critical integrative review of secondary evidence, this article examines whether ``overqualified'' remains a defensible recruitment judgement in contemporary labour markets. The review integrates research on overqualification and underemployment with personnel-selection validity, person–job fit, employer perceptions, skills-based hiring and global evidence on labour-market mismatch. The synthesis shows that overqualification remains useful for diagnosing post-entry mismatch, but the recruitment label is often conceptually loose, weakly predictive, context-sensitive and vulnerable to bias when applied without validated job-related evidence. The article develops …

The Role Of User-Generated Content Credibility In Enhancing Digital Emotional Engagement With Brand Identity: A Statistical Analysis Of Consumer Behaviour In E-Commerce, Ali Thamer Ali Al-Ibadi, Fatma Issa Hussien

AUIQ Humanities and Social Sciences

The growing role of user-generated content (UGC) in digital marketplaces has raised critical questions about how perceptions of credibility consumer emotions and behavior. This study examines how UGC credibility dimensions influence digital emotional engagement and subsequent consumer behavior in e-commerce settings. A mixed-method design integrating PLS-SEM, fsQCA, and netnography was applied to data collected from 437 active e-commerce consumers. Review neutrality (β = 0.318) and content accuracy (β = 0.284) were the strongest predictors of emotional engagement, while trust in content (β = 0.342) and sense of familiarity (β = 0.276) most effectively converted engagement into …

Chatgpt Employment Anxiety And Career Confidence: Discipline-Contingent Evidence From Malaysian Undergraduates, Fahd A. Raza, Abtar D. Singh, Rabia Anwar, Jonathan Js Kovilpillai, Analisa Hamdan, Fumiko Konno, Husna Hr Azami, Murali Raman

Higher Learning Research Communications

Background: The rapid diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has raised concerns about graduate employability, yet evidence on how ChatGPT employment anxiety relates to career confidence remains limited, particularly in non-Western contexts.

Objectives: We examined whether ChatGPT employment anxiety is associated with career confidence among Malaysian undergraduates and whether academic discipline or usage intensity moderates that association.

Methods: Using the Malaysian subset of the 2024–2025 Global ChatGPT Student Survey (Aristovnik et al., 2025; N = 315 ChatGPT users), we constructed a four-item employment anxiety index (α = .80) and estimated hierarchical ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions predicting a single-item measure …

China Maritime Report #59: Be Focused, Be Humble, Be Happy: Career Progression, Organization, And Training Of Plan Submariners, Phil Yu, Benjamin Rosen Oct 2026

China Maritime Report #59: Be Focused, Be Humble, Be Happy: Career Progression, Organization, And Training Of Plan Submariners, Phil Yu, Benjamin Rosen

CMSI China Maritime Reports

Main Findings

Led by the political commissar with the commanding officer serving as deputy, party committees are responsible for major decision-making, maintaining party control, training, and general leadership aboard People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) submarines. While Chinese sources extoll this collective leadership model, it is unclear how this command structure influences decision-making efficacy in practice.

PLAN political officers play a critical role in the leadership and decision making on PLAN submarines, but reportedly lack understanding of submarine operations. Despite attempts to improve the operational competency of political officers, this likely remains a problem for the PLAN submarine force.

The diverse …

Explaining Divergent Healthcare Entitlements For Undocumented Migrants: A Comparative Analysis Of Spain And Denmark, Jimin Jeong Oct 2026

Explaining Divergent Healthcare Entitlements For Undocumented Migrants: A Comparative Analysis Of Spain And Denmark, Jimin Jeong

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

This paper examines the puzzling divergence in healthcare entitlements for undocumented migrants in Spain and Denmark. Despite being a wealthy social democratic welfare state, Denmark restricts undocumented migrants to emergency-only care. Spain, a Mediterranean welfare state with fewer resources and a larger undocumented population, extends universal access to healthcare. This paper evaluates six theoretical explanations from the social policy scholarship to explore why Spain has adopted more generous healthcare entitlements for undocumented migrants than Denmark. The findings suggest that three mechanisms play the most significant role in explaining these differences: party configuration, elite framing, and the strength of interest group …

From Linguistic Domination To Counter-Power: The Weaponisation And Reappropriation Of Language In Shakespeare's Drama, Md. Abu Bakkar Oct 2026

From Linguistic Domination To Counter-Power: The Weaponisation And Reappropriation Of Language In Shakespeare's Drama, Md. Abu Bakkar

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

Studies of language and power in Shakespeare usually treat colonial, psychological, political, and familial domination as separate problems belonging to separate plays. This article asks what happens when the target of linguistic domination takes up, repeats, or withholds the discourse through which domination is exercised. It proposes linguistic counter-power as a comparative analytical concept: a change in who can define, command, or be believed within the dramatic world that outlasts and exceeds the speaker’s own act of resistance. The concept is distinguished from discursive resistance, linguistic agency, counter-discourse, and resignification, and is operationalised through three tests: uptake, durability, and structural …

Optimizing Job Demands And Resources To Enhance Employee Engagement And Organizational Performance, Ali Shakir Zaidan, Hadeel Kadem Saeed, Arash Arianpoor, Siraj Razooqi Abbas Oct 2026

Optimizing Job Demands And Resources To Enhance Employee Engagement And Organizational Performance, Ali Shakir Zaidan, Hadeel Kadem Saeed, Arash Arianpoor, Siraj Razooqi Abbas

AUIQ Humanities and Social Sciences

This study examines how Job Demands, resources, satisfaction, work engagement, and firm performance are interrelated using the job demands–resources (JD-R) model. According to this model, job demands are important for organizations, but if they are not balanced by sufficient job resources, they can cause strain and lower satisfaction. By contrast, job resources act as critical enablers, mitigating the adverse effects of demands, promoting job satisfaction, and enhancing employee engagement. By conceptualizing job satisfaction as a mediating variable, the proposed model clarifies how the interplay between demand and resources leads to increased work engagement, which contributes to improved firm performance. This …

Zero-Sum Empathy: The Supreme Court's 2025 Term Decisions On Gender Identity, Susan Etta Keller Oct 2026

Zero-Sum Empathy: The Supreme Court's 2025 Term Decisions On Gender Identity, Susan Etta Keller

ConLawNOW

This past term, the Supreme Court majority continued to follow a pattern of rendering transgender individuals essentially invisible in the cases that concern their rights. In last year’s United States v. Skrmetti, the transgender youth affected by the ban on transgender care were largely absent from the majority opinion holding that such bans discriminated on the basis of neither sex nor transgender status. This term, the majority continued a similar trend, deciding two cases on the emergency docket that ignored the lived experience of transgender individuals while significantly affecting them, and one case on the merits, West Virginia v. …
