Walking Together And Leading Change: Shaping Global Solutions To End Violence Against Children, Stella Muthuri Feb 2026

Walking Together And Leading Change: Shaping Global Solutions To End Violence Against Children, Stella Muthuri

Humanitarian Task Force

The Baobab Research Programme Consortium (Baobab) is an Africa- based, African-led consortium, spearheaded by the Population Council, Inc., in partnership with the Population Council–Kenya and the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), that is reshaping the narrative around sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) research in refugee settings. Across Africa’s most challenging humanitarian landscapes, Baobab is proving that evidence can ignite action. Starting with the first-ever Humanitarian Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys in Uganda and Ethiopia, Baobab turned data into solutions—co-designing a school-based sexual violence screening model with governments, UNHCR, and civil society. By embedding trained para-social …

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy Feb 2026

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy

Science of Reading

Indiana is one of a few states to enact a high stakes literacy test in third grade, the IREAD-3 test. High stakes testing is often a useful way to ensure a particular level of academic proficiency is met to allow students to succeed in a new setting, like college, or leave high school with desired skills. However, the requirement to automatically retain third graders who do not pass the IREAD-3 test without additional information or considerations, is not supported by research (AERA, 2000). These data highlight the critical need for educators and administrators to understand high-stakes standardized tests, as they …

Perceptions Of Educational Leaders About Creating E-Portfolios As Part Of A Leadership Upskilling Program, Zeina Hojeij, Areej Elsayary

All Works

The effectiveness of e-portfolios in supporting educator professional development (PD) remains uncertain, particularly in demonstrating leadership skills through reflections and perceptions. This study investigates the utility of e-portfolios by examining the perspectives of educational leaders within a K-12 setting in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The study involved 17 participants who completed an upskilling program, creating digital portfolios as part of their training. Additionally, 10 participants engaged in semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed three primary themes: genuine professional leadership growth, continuous PD, and an enhanced understanding of the student learning experience. The creation of e-portfolios not only fostered authentic PD …

Abuse Of Contract: A Proposal For A New Cause Of Action, Miriam A. Cherry Feb 2026

Abuse Of Contract: A Proposal For A New Cause Of Action, Miriam A. Cherry

William & Mary Law Review

With the growth of online commerce and the platform economy, many companies are including provisions in their online terms and conditions that extend far beyond what reasonable consumers would expect. Some terms and conditions purport to bind customers to separate contracts in future transactions that have little to do with the first contract. Other boilerplate purports to cover family members of the customer who created an account. Some retailers have argued that people shopping in their brick-and-mortar stores are subject to terms and conditions because those shoppers had at some point previously created an online account. For example, Disney argued …

Skrmetti And The Problem Of Incidental Intent, Martin Katz Feb 2026

Skrmetti And The Problem Of Incidental Intent, Martin Katz

William & Mary Law Review

The modern Supreme Court has defined “discriminatory intent” as a strict-liability concept. It does not matter why the government sorts people by a protected characteristic, such as race or sex; it matters only that the government does sort people by such a characteristic. This principle is the key holding of affirmative-action cases, such as Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College. Yet, in the recent case United States v. Skrmetti, the Court seemed to focus not on the question of whether the government sorted people by sex (it did), but on the question …

The Impact Of Innovation Belief On Strategic Product R&D, Yan Zhou Feb 2026

The Impact Of Innovation Belief On Strategic Product R&D, Yan Zhou

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In highly uncertain innovation scenarios characterized by long R&D cycles and high risks, how to continuously drive enterprises to develop market-competitive blockbuster products has become a critical issue of shared concern in both practice and academia. Existing research has mostly explained differences in blockbuster product R&D from perspectives such as resource allocation, organizational structure, or institutional incentives, while paying insufficient attention to cognitive and belief factors at the individual level. Based on this, this paper introduces the psychological and cognitive variable of "innovative belief" to systematically examine its impact mechanism on blockbuster product R&D capability.

Taking the R&D team of …

Debiasing Juror Decisions Using Intersectionality, Kaitlin Mccormick-Huhn Ph.D. Feb 2026

Debiasing Juror Decisions Using Intersectionality, Kaitlin Mccormick-Huhn Ph.D.

University of Richmond Law Review

A criminal defendant’s right to trial by an impartial jury is enshrined in the Constitution. However, this right cannot be realized if juror implicit bias remains unchecked. Indeed, jurors’ implicit bias has been shown to affect decisions as fundamental as who is guilty. Recognizing the problem of implicit bias affecting jurors, the American Bar Association created a taskforce aimed at addressing the issue. One of the solutions the taskforce proposed was a model implicit bias jury instruction. In recent years, seventeen jurisdictions have crafted criminal jury instructions that address implicit bias. This Article contains the first thematic analysis of all …

Transformative Technology And Shortening The Statute Of Limitations Applicable To Taxpayers, Jay A. Soled, Leslie Book Feb 2026

Transformative Technology And Shortening The Statute Of Limitations Applicable To Taxpayers, Jay A. Soled, Leslie Book

University of Richmond Law Review

When it comes to submitting tax returns and paying taxes, most taxpayers understand the nature of their civic duties and do so dutifully, if not willingly. However, many taxpayers fail to grasp why the IRS has such an elongated time period—namely, three years— to audit their tax returns and propose an assessment. Indeed, when the IRS exercises its oversight authority, records may no longer be available, and memories may be dulled. Since the original institution of the three-year tax assessment limitations period nearly a century ago, tremendous technological strides have been made. Indeed, over ninety percent of income tax returns …

Digitally Branded: The Developmental Catastrophe Of Juvenile Sex Offender Registries, Tammi Walker Feb 2026

Digitally Branded: The Developmental Catastrophe Of Juvenile Sex Offender Registries, Tammi Walker

University of Richmond Law Review

Juvenile sex offender registration was never a natural fit for the youth justice system, but in the digital age, it has become deeply harmful. What began as a paper-based precaution has evolved into a sprawling digital regime that permanently brands adolescents at the most formative stage of life. This Article examines how techno- logical change has turned registration into a publicly searchable network of stigma—amplified by data aggregators, search engines, neighborhood apps, and real estate platforms—that makes youthful misbehavior both permanent and inescapable. Drawing on insights from developmental neuroscience and criminology, the Article explains why adolescent sexual misconduct is often …

Ethical Edibles, Hannah R. Weiser, Daniel R. Cahoy Feb 2026

Ethical Edibles, Hannah R. Weiser, Daniel R. Cahoy

University of Richmond Law Review

Modern firms acknowledge the advantages in acting ethically. For some time, the goal of shareholder profit maximization has shared the stage with objectives that benefit a broader group of stakeholders. Such benefits can be attractive to not only employees and consumers, but increasingly to investors as well. Whether it is called corporate social responsibility, sustainability, or ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), firms now routinely plan and report such ethical efforts. However, the notion of the ethical firm cannot escape the business operation itself. Some firms present ethical quandaries by the very nature of the products they sell or the stakeholders …

Border Perceptions: Security And Immigration In The South Texas Borderlands, Carla Angulo-Pasel, Mi-Son Kim, Adrien A. Halliez

School of Political Science, Public Affairs, Legal and Security Studies Faculty Publications

With the Trump administration, we witnessed a hardening of border security policy and practices. Trump used his leadership and celebrity to explicitly attack and criminalize “undocumented” migrants with a discourse of threat, danger, invasion, crisis. Policywise, he took steps to further securitize the borderlands. In this paper, we examine how public opinion has differed with regards to the support or opposition to these hard security policies, especially in borderland areas when compared to the overall national population. The aim of this paper is to examine this difference by directing our attention to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), a borderlands region …

How Do Social Isolation And Loneliness Vary By Age?, Jihye Baek, Cal J. Halvorsen Feb 2026

How Do Social Isolation And Loneliness Vary By Age?, Jihye Baek, Cal J. Halvorsen

Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging

Social isolation and loneliness, which are experienced by many older adults, can negatively impact health and well-being. Although often used interchangeably, social isolation is defined as an objective lack of social ties (e.g., number of close family members or friends) and loneliness as an internal sense of disconnection (e.g., feeling alone even when surrounded by others). Because social relationships, health, and life circumstances change as we age, patterns of social isolation and loneliness may differ by age group. Therefore, this research brief asks, How do patterns of social isolation and loneliness differ across age groups among community-dwelling older adults?

Management Compensation And Tax Avoidance: The Moderating Role Of Audit Quality, Asmaa A. Elsayed Mrs, Sadek Hamed Mostafa Prof., Dina Elsayed Mostafa Dr.

Business Administration

Tax avoidance has attracted substantial interest from researchers, regulators, and policymakers worldwide due to its significant impact on society as a whole. However, the majority of existing research focuses on developed countries, and the results are inconsistent. Thus, this research investigates the effect of management compensation on tax avoidance as well as the moderating role of audit quality, measured by auditor specialization, in this relationship. The sample includes 352 observations from 44 Egyptian firms listed on the EGX100 for the period 2016 to 2023. Using fixed-effects multiple regression, the findings indicate a significant positive relationship between management compensation and tax …

Ethnic Dissimilarity, Ethnic Status, And Organizational Embeddedness: Climate For Inclusion As Double-Edged Sword, Debjani Ghosh, Jorge A. Gonzalez, Daan Van Knippenberg, Richard A. Rodriguez Feb 2026

Ethnic Dissimilarity, Ethnic Status, And Organizational Embeddedness: Climate For Inclusion As Double-Edged Sword, Debjani Ghosh, Jorge A. Gonzalez, Daan Van Knippenberg, Richard A. Rodriguez

Management Faculty Publications

Ethnic dissimilarity to coworkers puts individuals’ social embeddedness at work under pressure. We consider this issue from the perspective of a moderating influence of climate for inclusion in the relationship between ethnic dissimilarity and organizational embeddedness. We argue that, whereas it may seem straightforward that climate for inclusion would be associated with a weaker negative influence between ethnic dissimilarity and organizational embeddedness, team climate for inclusion is a double-edged sword. Taking the status associated with ethnic groups into account, we propose that the status equality implied by climate for inclusion has differential effects for members of high ethnic status and …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study aims to investigate the effects of different smartphone lock screen wallpapers on weekly perceived well-being, procrastination, and productivity in young adults. Through a pre-registered within-subject experiment, 60 participants were exposed to three smartphone wallpaper conditions: nature, animal, and neutral (control). Each participant experienced each condition over three weeks, with the order of conditions counterbalanced. Using Frequentist and Bayesian analyses, we did not find any differences between conditions across the pre-registered confirmatory outcomes (i.e., life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect, stress, productivity, and procrastination). Exploratory outcomes related to lock screen engagement, however, revealed some meaningful effects. Animal-themed smartphone wallpapers …

Beyond Resilience: The Case For Regenerative, Restorative Cities, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In a commentary, SMU President Professor Lily Kong mentioned that at the City Dialogues event, co-convened by SMU and Urban Innovation Vienna, participants agreed that cities must equip their residents to withstand shocks and thrive in an evolving urban environment. Prof Kong said resilient cities anticipate, adapt and respond effectively to disruptions, which involves attention not only to physical infrastructure, but also to social cohesion and institutional foresight. She said that embedding sustainability into urban design is fundamental to ensuring cities flourish in a world of climate uncertainty and resource constraints. She added that the value of urban resilience lies …

Dual Self-Construal Integration (Dsci) And Romantic Relationships In Singapore: Enhancing Romantic Relationship Satisfaction Through Creativity, Kenneth Tan, Chi-Ying Cheng, Gloria J. Lai, Daniel Ho Feb 2026

Dual Self-Construal Integration (Dsci) And Romantic Relationships In Singapore: Enhancing Romantic Relationship Satisfaction Through Creativity, Kenneth Tan, Chi-Ying Cheng, Gloria J. Lai, Daniel Ho

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Research has shown that independent vs. interdependent self-construals are largely shaped by culture and can predict the endorsement of distinct relational schemes when dealing with close others. Intriguingly, individuals exposed to both Eastern and Western cultures can develop both independent and interdependent self-construals and possess the two seemingly conflicting self-construals simultaneously. What is less explored is how different management of both independent and interdependent self-construals influence individuals' navigation of relational schemas in their romantic relationships. The current research examines the influence of how one's dual self-construal integration (DSCI)—an individual difference measure that captures the degree to which individuals perceive independent …

Secondary School Students' Engagement In Learning Activities: Validation Of A Short Scale, Feliciano Henriques Veiga, Zi Yang Wong, Johnmarshall Reeve, Shane Jimerson, Antonio Leite, Joan Perales, Sonia Valente, Isabel Martinez Feb 2026

Secondary School Students' Engagement In Learning Activities: Validation Of A Short Scale, Feliciano Henriques Veiga, Zi Yang Wong, Johnmarshall Reeve, Shane Jimerson, Antonio Leite, Joan Perales, Sonia Valente, Isabel Martinez

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Student engagement is a multidimensional construct strongly associated with learning outcomes and academic success. However, its measurement remains challenging, as existing instruments often conflate engagement in learning activities with engagement in the school community. In addition, brief measures are scarce despite their increasing value, and most available instruments do not incorporate agentic engagement. Assessing student engagement in learning activities is, therefore, crucial for monitoring academic progress, identifying students at risk of dropping out, and predicting academic success. This study aimed to validate the 12-item Secondary School Student Engagement in Learning Activities: Short Scale, adapted from a higher education measure, which …

Humanitarian Hospitality: A Framework For Ethical Encounters In Crisis Tourism, Georges El Hajal, Rodney Westerlaken, Erwin Losekoot Feb 2026

Humanitarian Hospitality: A Framework For Ethical Encounters In Crisis Tourism, Georges El Hajal, Rodney Westerlaken, Erwin Losekoot

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper introduces humanitarian hospitality as a conceptual framework for understanding relational ethics and care practices in crisis-affected tourism. While volunteer tourism, disaster recovery travel, and solidarity-based travel bring individuals into crisis-affected destinations, the hospitality that unfolds in these non-commercial encounters remains under-theorised. Drawing on philosophical perspectives and exploratory qualitative insights from 145 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and aid workers, the study examines how emotional labour, ethical care, and informal hosting are enacted in contexts of conflict and displacement. The findings both parallel and complicate conventional host–guest dynamics, highlighting the ethical and emotional complexities of providing care under …
