The Psychology Of Offensive And Defensive Intergroup Violence: Preregistered Insights From 58 Countries, Jonas R. Kunst, Tomasz Besta, Michał Jaśkiewicz, Et Al, Lauren E. Duncan
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Historically, intergroup violence has been motivated by both offensive and defensive goals, often blending narratives of protection with ambitions of domination. In a preregistered study spanning 58 countries, we show that defensive and offensive extremist intentions are positively correlated yet psychologically distinct, relating differently to individual and societal factors. Defensive extremist intentions were far more common and primarily linked to narcissism and Machiavellianism, whereas offensive extremist intentions were primarily associated with social dominance orientation and religious fundamentalism, were lower in more democratic and developed societies, and higher in those experiencing violence and conflict. This global evidence suggests that violent extremist …

Population Health Research Brief Series
Working hard and persisting through challenges (i.e., striving) are often encouraged for children who face adversity. But for children facing severe adversity, striving can come with hidden costs. This brief summarizes findings from a study using data from the Environmental Exposures and Child Health Outcomes (EECHO) cohort (N=283, 2013-2017) of children ages 9-11 in Syracuse, NY. The authors find that children facing adversity who strived harder reported lower depression and hostility. However, high-striving high-adversity children also experienced significantly higher blood pressure and enlarged heart chambers than their lower striving peers, both risk factors for future heart disease.

Communication Faculty Articles and Research
Objective
Daughters undertake daughtering, or the everyday role portrayal of contributing to a meaningful family relationship with their mothers, but the labor of it is often invisible.
Background
Using a strengths-based approach, we investigated what daughters do well in their relationships with mothers.
Method
We analyzed the responses of 1,444 women to the open-ended question, “What do you do well as a daughter?” to learn more about how women describe their daughtering. Utilizing the artificial intelligence of a large language model for data analysis, we supplied definitions and descriptions of 12 virtues and strengths from existing literature and created a …
Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo
Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo
LSU Master's Theses
Gender, a social construct, exists on a spectrum that is shaped by social, cultural, and embodied experience. Edges That Touch examines the instability of gender through the lens of combat sports, focusing on the way the hypermasculine environment abstracts femme identities. Informed by my lived experience, the work investigates the paradox in which empowerment and alienation coexist and destabilizes gender binaries.
Edges That Touch uses experimental graphic design processes and mixed media to recreate the psychological landscape and emotional realities that I navigated as a cisgender woman in the world of combat sports. I use visual techniques that obscure legibility …
Teachers' Perspectives On The Inclusion Of Children With Autism In Preschool And Kindergarten Programs Within Inclusive Classrooms In Saudi Arabia, Budur Alsalamah
Teachers' Perspectives On The Inclusion Of Children With Autism In Preschool And Kindergarten Programs Within Inclusive Classrooms In Saudi Arabia, Budur Alsalamah
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a significant increase in the number of students with autism being integrated into mainstream classrooms. This is thanks to laws and regulations enacted to provide appropriate education for students with special needs, particularly those with autism, in less restrictive environments. This is a positive step towards providing equal educational opportunities for students with special needs. However, teachers' views on integrating children with autism into mainstream education remain varied. Studies have shown that teachers with positive attitudes towards inclusion are more likely to provide inclusive education in the classroom (Dev & Hayes, 2015). This …

Biomechanical Analysis Of Lumbar Oblique Manipulation For Lumbar Disc Herniation With Different Protrusion Subtypes, Frank Vrionis
All Publications
Lumbar oblique manipulation (LOM) is one of the commonly used conservative treatments for lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Compared with surgical interventions, its non - invasive nature provides patients with greater comfort and reduces treatment resistance, resulting in its widespread clinical application. However, manual techniques may vary according to the type of disc herniation and could potentially lead to adverse outcomes. For which LDH patients is LOM truly suitable? This question deserves further consideration. To investigate the specific characteristics of LOM for different LDH types, this study constructed six representative finite element models of LDH and analyzed the biomechanical effects of …

Level 1 Stabilization: Managing Nursing Trauma In Critical And Acute Care, Leslie Okhirkhian
DNP and Student Works
High-acuity environments (emergency departments and critical care units) do not hold a monopoly on trauma, and it is not limited solely to the experience from the perspective of the patient. Nurses routinely mobilize in response to life-threatening events, detouring resource and attention in a coordinated effort to stabilize critically ill patients. Though essential for patient survival, the cumulative psychological burden of such events on nurses is often disregarded or dismissed. Repeated exposure to mortality and emotionally charged clinical presentations can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress. Yet the burden of resilience is often placed on the individual nurse. …

Logic Model Development Through A Feasibility Rct For A Group-Based Weight Management Programme, Rod Sheaff, Shokraneh Moghadam, Laura Hollands, Lily Hawkins, Dawn Swancutt, Jenny Lloyd, Jonathan Pinkney, Mark Tarrant
School of Psychology
ObjectivesClinical psychology interventions for reducing obesity have developed alongside pharmacological and surgical treatments, but usually as interventions for individual patients. Any healthcare intervention rests on a logic model: assumptions that through specific physical and social mechanisms, it will produce certain intended outcomes, provided that conducive background conditions (‘contexts’) exist. Using evidence from the feasibility trial preceding a full randomised controlled trial (RCT), this paper assesses the empirical validity of the initial logic model of a new group-based weight management intervention: PROGROUP, designed for patients with body mass index (BMI) ≥40 kg/m2 or ≥35 kg/m2 with comorbidities. We aimed to test …

BACKGROUND: Romantic relationships are important contexts for substance use and emotional well-being. We tested the hypotheses that (i) genetic predispositions for alcohol consumption would be positively associated with partner substance use, (ii) partner substance use would moderate genetic influences on one's own alcohol outcomes, and (iii) partner discordance in substance use would be associated with lower emotional well-being and relationship quality.
METHODS: Analyses included 2,357 participants (M
RESULTS: Participant PGS
CONCLUSIONS: The results highlight the importance of partner substance use in etiological models of alcohol use, emotional health outcomes, and relationship quality.

Parental expectations significantly shape adolescents' emotional well-being and self-perception, especially in Philippine culture, where family honor and obligations are expected. Perceived parental disappointment can lead to emotional distress, anxiety, and self-doubt, affecting self-esteem and personal development. While much of the existing research focuses on parental perspectives, there is little research and understanding of how adolescents internalize these experiences. This study examines the narratives of Filipino adolescents on perceived parental disappointment, highlighting its emotional and psychological effects. This study utilized interviews in order to collect the lived experiences of Filipino adolescents aged 18-19, residing in Binan and Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Through …

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The rapid expansion of name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities has reshaped the U.S. college sport landscape, yet limited research has examined how NIL engagement affects athlete identity and well-being. This study investigates the relationships among NIL engagement, identity salience, and stress. Survey data were collected from 351 Division I athletes across four major conferences. Regression analyses indicated that greater NIL commitment was associated with heightened athlete identity salience and increased NIL-related stress. NIL satisfaction emerged as a protective factor, predicting lower stress, whereas perceptions of fairness were not significantly related to stress. Brief open-ended survey responses provided explanatory context, …

Globalization has significantly impacted economies worldwide, presenting both business opportunities and challenges. In the Philippines, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are vital economic drivers. However, despite their importance, MSMEs often face systemic barriers such as limited capital, restricted market access, and insufficient institutional support. This study, grounded in Sarasvathy’s Effectuation Theory—which emphasizes leveraging existing means, minimizing risks, forming partnerships, and embracing uncertainty—investigates how Filipino micro-entrepreneurs navigate decision-making under resource constraints. Unlike traditional predictive models, effectuation is more suited to uncertain environments. This research examines Filipino entrepreneurial experiences that would validate the application of effectuation principles in the Philippine context …

Preservice teachers often lack confidence in classroom assessment, highlighting the need for robust tools to measure assessment self-efficacy. The Classroom Assessment Self-Efficacy Survey (CASES) was designed to address this need. It comprises 24 items across two subscales: Evaluating Others’ Confidence (EOC) and Personal Performance Confidence (PPC). This study examined the psychometric properties of CASES using 223 responses from preservice teachers. Rasch modeling and other statistical techniques were applied to evaluate validity evidence based on response processes, internal structure, and relations to other variables. Results showed that CASES functioned as intended. Rating scale use was consistent with expectations, and reliability and …

Early Childhood Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Scientists At Work, Tenisha L. Powell, Susan Green
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Early childhood teachers play a vital role in creating young children’s perceptions about science and scientists. Stereotypical perceptions of scientists and science may be detrimental to young children because these beliefs limit the possibility that science is accessible to all. To assist children in broadening their thinking about science, teachers must first gain knowledge about their own beliefs and perceptions. Several researchers have found that "teachers tend to teach in the same ways in which they were taught when they were students" (Finson, Thomas & Pedersen, 2006). In this study, 33 early childhood pre-service teachers were asked to "draw a …

The multi-user virtual environment (MUVE), known as Second Life (SL™) has been used extensively for educational purposes. Yet less studied are applications of this environment to health education topics. Equally lacking are clear instructions to guide the educator in both establishing this useful learning environment, and an application of the environment to educational topics that can be difficult to discuss face to face. The objectives for this manuscript include the development of an understanding of the technical parameters necessary to use Second Life, and methods to apply sexual health education content within the Second Life virtual world.
