A well-documented shortage of nursing faculty is a key contributor to the ongoing shortage of nurses in the United States. Part-time clinical nursing faculty play a key role in preparing prelicensure nursing students for clinical practice. These part-time faculty have reported a perceived lack of peer support in the academic workplace. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of novice part-time prelicensure clinical nursing faculty as they sought peer support to transition into the educator role. Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology, as applied by Moustakas, and Illeris’s three dimensions of learning model informed this study. A sample …

The theoretical frameworks applied to this study included social penetration theory, self-disclosure theory, and Reis and Shaver’s intimacy process model. The primary purpose of this quantitative secondary analysis of previously collected data by Rose was to test whether young adults’ perceived pressure from their …

School Officials' Perceptions Of Threat Assessment Programs, William Ward

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Acts of targeted violence on school grounds, and most notably school shootings, continue to occur and are a serious concern for many people. Behavioral threat assessment programs are one method being used to address this problem, and while considerable research has been conducted on threat assessment programs, very little research has been conducted on how school officials implement, operate, or understand these programs. A more informed awareness of how school officials perceive the implementation, operation, and usefulness of threat assessment programs may provide insight into ways to improve the implementation and management of these programs. Hide Or Seek? Paradigms Of Publicized Police Killings And The Paradox Of Police Calls, Dr. Ty Woods

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Police departments and the 911 emergency call system were created for public safety purposes. However, when a 911 call summoning police for assistance leads to another 911 call involving a deceased victim of a police encounter, public safety seems lacking. Many citizens vicariously witness or view fatal police encounters through the lens of extant media information, and how the public perceives media coverage can negate citizen trust and confidence in law enforcement. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the influence of perceived media coverage of police-caused deaths of unarmed Black men and its impact on the inclination …

Hepatitis C Infection And Kidney Transplant Waiting Time Among End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Marie J. Anglade-Mccormick

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Kidney transplantation is identified as the ideal approach to managing end-stage renal disease (ESRD), yet access for some groups remains an ongoing concern. Research findings support the notion that hepatitis-C-infected ESRD patients benefit from kidney transplantation compared to those remaining on dialysis. Although the disparity in access to kidney transplantation has been well researched, the association between hepatitis C virus infection and kidney transplant waiting times among ESRD patients was unknown. The purpose of this quantitative retrospective study was to analyze the association between hepatitis C virus infection, blood type, and kidney transplant waiting times among ESRD patients when controlling …

Association Between Educational Level, Unemployment, Race, And Chronic Kidney Disease Among African Americans, Samuel Fiifi Bediako

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractChronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the significant health conditions that cause high morbidity and mortality in the United States. Although African Americans (AA) are only 12.9% of the population, they disproportionately suffer 25.1% of deaths due to CKD. It was not obvious how factors such as education and unemployment further complicate the condition. Thus, this quantitative study aimed to examine the association between CKD and educational level, unemployment, and race when controlling for gender and underlying health conditions such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, which tend to exacerbate renal insufficiency. The study was based on the socio-ecological model, …

Self-Efficacy Facilitated Sleep, Physical Activity, Towards Regulating Bmi Of Permanent 12-Hour Shift Registered Nurses, Veronica Brock

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Shift workers with obesity-related comorbidities have reduced health and lifespan. Registered nurses (RNs) are ranked fifth among the most obese professionals in the United States, according to recent studies. Researchers have not examined the relationship between self-efficacy, physical activity, sleep, and 12-hour night shift RNs despite demonstrating that self-efficacy inspires confident health habits in the general population. For this quantitative study, the social cognitive theory was applied to study the interrelationships among the independent variables, sleep self-efficacy, self-efficacy for physical activity, and body mass index (BMI), with multiple dependent demographic variables, quality and quantity of sleep, and the level and …

Perioperative nurses are in a unique position to provide insight into the process for colorectal surgical care bundle usage, yet little is known about how perioperative nurses view the process. The perioperative patient focused model was used in this qualitative interpretative phenomenological study to examine the perceptions of perioperative nurses regarding the use of colorectal surgery care bundle and its role in preventing SSIs in patients undergoing colon and rectal surgeries. Sixteen perioperative nurses who were members of …
