Camouflaging Autistic Traits Is Not A Consequence Of Conformist Tendencies, Alastair Smith, Rhiannon Walsh
Camouflaging Autistic Traits Is Not A Consequence Of Conformist Tendencies, Alastair Smith, Rhiannon Walsh
School of Psychology
Social camouflaging behaviours are often used by people with high autistic traits to negotiate a predominantly neurotypical social world. Previous discussion has associated camouflaging with a tendency to conform, although it has also been suggested that masking autistic tendencies may be a more specific motivating factor. The relationship between autistic traits and conformity is itself equivocal, suggesting that it may not necessarily be a driving force for social camouflaging in this group. To better characterise the relationship between these factors, we conducted an exploratory questionnaire study comprising measures of social conformity (Tendency to Conform Questionnaire), autistic traits (AQ), social camouflaging …
Servingness In Solidarity: How Filipina/X/O American Student Organizations Cultivate Belonging, Clarissa Mae Lico Calimbas
Servingness In Solidarity: How Filipina/X/O American Student Organizations Cultivate Belonging, Clarissa Mae Lico Calimbas
Dissertations
Filipina/x/o American college students represent one of the largest Asian ethnic subgroups in the United States, yet their educational experiences remain underexamined within institutional research and higher education scholarship. Aggregated under the broader Asian American category, Filipina/x/o American students are rendered invisible by data practices that obscure the distinct colonial histories, socioeconomic realities, and identity negotiations. This qualitative study examined how Filipina/x/o American students at Pacific State University (PSU) describe their involvement in Filipina/x/o American Student Organizations (FASOs) and how that involvement shapes their sense of belonging, cultural identity development, and academic persistence. Guided by a critical race phenomenological framework …

Primary Care Providers In Alabama And Washington Who Provide Care To African American Women With Dense Breast Tissue With And Without A Cancer Diagnosis, Andrea Shermaine Mcdaniel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American women with dense breast tissue have experienced challenges related to breast cancer screening, timely follow-up care, and access to diagnostic services. There was limited research showing the experiences of primary care providers (PCPs) who provided care to this population. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of PCPs in Alabama and Washington who provided care to African American women with dense breast tissue, both with and without a breast cancer diagnosis. The conceptual framework for this study was intersectionality theory, which is used to consider multiple social determinants of health when examining …
Examining The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Job Satisfaction Among Administrators And Educators: A Correlational Study, Zachary Caudell
Examining The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Job Satisfaction Among Administrators And Educators: A Correlational Study, Zachary Caudell
Doctorate in Kinesiology
This study was developed to examine if a significant relationship exists between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and the job satisfaction of educational staff, with further exploratory analysis examining self-efficacy as a mediator to the relationship. Employing a cross-sectional design, data from a sample of middle school educational staff was collected and analyzed (n=35). Job satisfaction, physical activity levels, and self-efficacy were measured using the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire – Short Form (MSQ-SF), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire – Short Form (IPAQ-SF) and the General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. Analyses were conducted using Jeffery’s Amazing Statistics Program (JASP). The results of the analyses revealed …
Quality Improvement Project: The Impact Of Provider Education On Antipsychotic Medication Side Effects, Anthony Emego
Quality Improvement Project: The Impact Of Provider Education On Antipsychotic Medication Side Effects, Anthony Emego
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Weight gain is a frequent and clinically relevant side effect of antipsychotic medication. A needs assessment at the project site found that roughly 55% of patients on an antipsychotic treatment had clinically significant weight gain, and providers had no formal training on how to prevent and manage this. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine if a provider-focused educational intervention is effective in increasing provider confidence and decreasing antipsychotic-induced weight gain in adult psychiatric patients. This quantitative, one-group pre-post design utilized Lewin's Change Theory and Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory. It was conducted at an outpatient psychiatric clinic …
The Impact Of Provider Education On Medication Adherence In An Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic: A Quality Improvement Project, Tina Ezeh
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Medication adherence is important in psychiatric care, as nonadherence can contribute to poor health outcomes and increased use of healthcare services. A needs assessment at an outpatient psychiatric clinic identified inconsistent medication adherence education, with only 30% of providers routinely providing education and 20% using a structured approach. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate structured provider education, with the aim of assessing changes in provider confidence and the frequency of medication adherence education over eight weeks. Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model guided project implementation, while the Donabedian Model was used for project evaluation. A quantitative, one-group pretest-posttest …
Quality Improvement Project: Evaluating The Impact Of An Emotional Support Program For Nurses In A Rural Outpatient Clinic, Tosheta Brown Greenfield
Quality Improvement Project: Evaluating The Impact Of An Emotional Support Program For Nurses In A Rural Outpatient Clinic, Tosheta Brown Greenfield
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Nurse burnout is a persistent, well-documented threat to workforce sustainability and patient safety, with rural nurses at heightened risk due to chronic understaffing, geographic isolation, and limited access to organizational support. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement and evaluate an eight-week Emotional Well-Being Support Program (EWSP), with the aim of reducing burnout and perceived stress among nurses working in a small rural primary care clinic. Guided by Lewin's Change Model and the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice, the project used a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test single-group design with four participating nurses. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout …
Quality Improvement Project: Providing Evidence-Based Practice Education On Administering The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Screening During Visits Once Per Trimester And Postpartum, Megan Keeney
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Perinatal depression (PND) is prevalent worldwide and frequently remains undetected and untreated due to inconsistent screening. At the project site, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered postpartum only, without standardization. This quality improvement project implemented evidence-based provider education and a revised EPDS protocol, screening once per trimester and postpartum, to increase PND identification, provider self-confidence, self-efficacy, and behavioral health referral rates. This project was guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and the Donabedian framework. A quantitative pre-post design was used with nine providers in an outpatient women’s health clinic, alongside a retrospective and post-implementation electronic health record (EHR) review. …
The Cognitive Construction Of Sustainable Environmental Awareness Through Green Language Pedagogy In Second Language Acquisition, Meral Yavuz Kartal, Osman Yılmaz Kartal
The Cognitive Construction Of Sustainable Environmental Awareness Through Green Language Pedagogy In Second Language Acquisition, Meral Yavuz Kartal, Osman Yılmaz Kartal
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
The escalating global ecological crisis highlights the need for new approaches to sustainability education, while the cognitive role of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) remains underexplored. This study employs a critical literature review with a systematic search and qualitative thematic synthesis to develop a proposed Green Language Pedagogy (GLP) model. The review followed a four-stage screening protocol (identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion) and analyzed 50 theoretical and empirical sources published between 2014 and 2025. This analysis of the selected literature reveals a stark disparity: an estimated 85% of the reviewed environmental education research focuses on factual knowledge transfer, whereas only 15% …

Divergent Electoral Judgements: Muhammadiyah’S Organisational Values And Pre-Election Voting Intentions In Kendari During Indonesia’S 2024 Presidential Election, Muhammad Ikhsan, Nurjannah Nurjannah, Rini Harjanti Poapa, Irma Irayanti
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This article examines how candidate assessments and organisational commitments enter pre-election voting intentions among Muhammadiyah members and active sympathisers in Kendari during Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design combined a survey of 280 respondents with subsequent interviews involving 17 purposively selected informants. Prabowo–Gibran received 41.07% of stated intentions, Anies–Muhaimin 33.57%, and Ganjar–Mahfud 25.36%; no pair secured majority support. Multinomial logistic regression showed positive associations between candidate evaluation and preferences for both Anies–Muhaimin and Prabowo–Gibran relative to Ganjar–Mahfud. Economic considerations reached significance in the Prabowo–Gibran comparison, whereas religious–social considerations did so in the Anies–Muhaimin comparison. Organisational involvement and …

New Basketball Venues And Attendance In Men's College Basketball: Insights For Facility Planning And Athletic Department Strategy, Brad Stinnett
Global Sport Business Journal
As college athletic departments continue to put considerable resources into basketball facilities, understanding the impact these venues can have on attendance has become increasingly vital. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of new basketball facilities on attendance among NCAA Division I men's basketball programs. Using a longitudinal pre-post comparative research design, 20 programs that opened new venues since the 2015-16 season served as the sample. A dataset was created using publicly available secondary archival data sources. Findings highlight attendance patterns after the opening of the new venue, facility capacity utilization, and changes in program winning percentage. …
The Supreme Court's Ideal Audience, H. Jefferson Powell
The Supreme Court's Ideal Audience, H. Jefferson Powell
ConLawNOW
This Essay argues that the answer to the troubling question of whether constitutional law on the Supreme Court level is truly "law," is yes. Or at least can be yes without any radical change to our modes of constitutional law reasoning by understanding how and why the Justices' write their opinions. It suggests that George Christie’s classic book, The Notion of an Ideal Audience in Legal Argument, provides part of the basis for affirming the law-ness of American constitutional law in two ways. First, using the lens of constitutional law provided by Christie’s formulation of the ideal audience concept, it …
Enhancing Visitor Experiences Through Storytelling In Interpretive Tour Guiding, Naoko Yamada
Enhancing Visitor Experiences Through Storytelling In Interpretive Tour Guiding, Naoko Yamada
International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research
Heritage interpretation enables visitors to make sense of their experiences by communicating meaningful messages at natural and cultural heritage sites. By fostering understanding, appreciation, and personal relevance, interpretation enriches visitor experiences and encourages responsible attitudes and behaviors. Among various interpretive approaches, storytelling has emerged as a particularly promising means of achieving these outcomes. However, research examining how storytelling enriches heritage interpretation and promotes deeper visitor engagement remains limited. This conceptual paper synthesizes literature from storytelling, psychology, marketing, tourism, and heritage interpretation to develop a framework explaining how storytelling influences interpretive outcomes. The framework proposes that story elements activate psychological mechanisms, …

The N-Word As A Comma, Deshawn Vega
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Deshawn Vega is a Biology major from Boston, Massachusetts. Drawing on his experiences as a mixed-race Black man, his essay examines racism, cultural appropriation, and the ways prejudice can operate both inside and outside the home. Because part of his family is not Black, Deshawn has experienced racism in complex and sometimes unexpected ways. He describes the essay as “an opportunity for me to tell my story and exemplify the ways in which racism has impacted not only myself, but many others just like me.” The project’s creative freedom allowed him to combine personal narrative with a broader analysis of …

The Sad Beige Trap: Why Bold Aesthetics Stay Online, Kauthar Maruf
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Kauthar Maruf is a Biology major from Boston, Massachusetts. Her essay began with an effort to find colorful inspiration for her family’s living room and developed into an investigation of the internet’s neutral “Sad Beige” aesthetic and the contrasting popularity of “Brat Green.” As she encountered increasingly similar homes, products, and social-media posts, Kauthar began asking whether personal preferences are genuinely individual or are shaped by algorithms, corporations, economics, and online culture. Conducting her own survey allowed her to compare her initial assumptions with the perspectives of others. She explains that the project encouraged her to begin “looking beyond the …

Diego Hernández Hernández is a Computer Science major and prospective Mathematics minor. Originally from El Salvador, he grew up primarily in Revere and Holbrook, Massachusetts. A first-generation immigrant and nontraditional student, Diego returned to school seven years after graduating from high school. His essay examines how communication between emerging adults and their families changes after they leave home, drawing particularly on his relationship with his mother. To make that relationship visible to readers, he incorporated a series of their text messages into the project. Diego explains that this essay “was special to me because it revolved around my family and …

Trans Joy And The Lesson Of Authentic Living, Emma Victra Danvers
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Emma Victra Danvers is a Psychology major from North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Her essay investigates trans joy and the research demonstrating the positive effects of gender transition. As a trans woman writing during a particularly difficult period for the transgender community, Emma wanted to examine joy not as an escape from political realities but as a meaningful source of strength and resilience. She explains, “The more I started writing it, the more I realized how much I have to be happy about. I found that trans joy again that I lost for a little bit.” The project also helped Emma …

Hamburgers: Great For Dinner, Bad For Writing, Jameison Wirta
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Jameison Wirta is from Somerset, MA, and is a Psychology major with a Chemistry minor in the Pre-Medical Program. For Jameison, this essay was especially important because it completely transformed the way he thinks about writing. “I used to hate writing,” he explains, “but what I really hated was the cookie-cutter, check-the-box process I was always confined to. Learning to set myself a bit freer in my writing was an absolute blessing, and now I love it.” He hopes to share that same sense of freedom with others through his work. This semester was Jameison’s first time back in a …

To Speak Is To Survive: Language, Loss And Holding On, Mathilda Sanon
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Mathilda Sanon is a Psychology major with an English minor from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Mathilda explains that this essay was deeply personal to her because it is tied to her family, her culture, and her own experiences of language. She thought often of her grandmother, who has lived in the United States for decades but has never let go of Haitian Kreyol. “Watching her speak her language so freely while I have spent years adjusting mine to fit into certain spaces really stuck with me,” Mathilda reflects. She says that she did not want to write about language loss as some …

The Dystopian Landscape Of Short-Form Content, Leslie Payne
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Leslie Payne is a Psychology major with a Communications minor from Vienna, Virginia. Leslie explains that when her class began discussing the impact of social media, she immediately knew what her essay would focus on. “It felt like the only possible thing I could write about,” she recalls, noting how strongly she felt about its pervasive effects yet lacking the structured expression to articulate them before this assignment. She was particularly interested in the overlap between short-form content, identity formation, and media cycles, and writing this paper gave her both the research and framework to better understand those connections. She …

Saint Joan Of Arc And The Modern Transgender Liberation Movement, Nick King
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Nick King is a Classical Languages and History major from Haverhill, MA. For Nick, this essay became a source of both comfort and empowerment, particularly within the context of our current political climate. He explains that “being a trans person is hard, and we need more role models of resilience,” and this writing project allowed him to give voice to those complexities. Written during his second semester of college, Nick notes that the atmosphere of political strife pushed him to pour even more passion and conviction into his work. This essay is especially meaningful to Nick because it reflects the …

Compelled By Darkness: Batman, Mental Instability, And The Blurred Line Of Heroism, Chloë Lucien
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Chloë Lucien is a Music major with a Dance minor from Mattapan, MA. Chloë explains that this essay was deeply personal because Batman’s story has always been more than a comic book origin to her. “Batman himself has become a mirror I could look into, a reflection of my own journey from pain to purpose,” she shares. Writing about Bruce Wayne allowed her to explore how mental wounds can coexist with, and even fuel, acts of courage, challenging the simplistic “hero-versus-villain” narrative while bringing self-acceptance to her own ongoing work of healing. For Chloë, the essay became more than an …

Film's Depictions Of Mental Illness, Mandy May
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Mandy May is a psychology major from Canton, CT. Mandy’s purpose for writing her essay was to spread awareness of the impact that negative portrayals of mental illnesses in the media have on audiences. She shares that, as a psychology major, she has always been “hyper-aware of the way films exaggerate and emphasize unrealistic stereotypes surrounding mental illness.” Mandy feels that this essay gave her the opportunity to “finally research more about the reality of these depictions, and to hear about how people with mental disorders are affected by negative portrayals.” With a growing interest in child psychology, fueled by …

Apart from just listening to music, Yelena has played the piano and guitar for many years. Her music has served as a crucial outlet and has become “a major part of who I am because it is something I love and enjoy …

Bella Brown is an environmental science major and a biology minor from Glastonbury, CT. Bella says that she is “super passionate about nature and finding new ways to preserve and understand it” and when she was presented with the task of writing a research paper she knew that she wanted to further explore a podcast episode about trees communicating through fungi, or “talking trees.” She says it “seemed like a huge breakthrough on understanding how our forests function as complex ecosystems.” Bella also notes that one thing she loved about writing this paper was the freedom to choose whatever topic …
