Unintended Consequences Of Public Procurement: Evidence From The Wic Program, Jose Miguel Abito, Kathleen Hui, Yuval Salant, Kosuke Uetake Jul 2026

Unintended Consequences Of Public Procurement: Evidence From The Wic Program, Jose Miguel Abito, Kathleen Hui, Yuval Salant, Kosuke Uetake

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides infant formula to low-income households through state-level exclusive supply contracts that cover roughly half of U.S. infants. Although these contracts directly govern purchases by WIC participants, they also affect households that receive no WIC benefits. We study these spillovers using household-level in-store and online transaction data matched to WIC contract changes across states from 2018 to 2025. When a manufacturer becomes the WIC supplier, its market share among non-WIC households rises by roughly 30 percentage points in the regular-size formula segment. The response is concentrated in physical stores, …

Effect Of Solid Particle Size And Density On Incipient Motion In A Turbulent Boundary Layer, Robert Bryan Jul 2026

Effect Of Solid Particle Size And Density On Incipient Motion In A Turbulent Boundary Layer, Robert Bryan

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Wind-blown sand and other instances of solid particles mobilized and suspended in gaseous turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) are seen in a wide variety of engineering contexts. An experimental framework was developed to study the incipient particle motion driven by external forcing within a turbulent boundary layer, which is provided by an airfoil section oscillating in the free-steam flow, resulting in a periodic disturbance in the near-wall region through production of synthetic large-scale structures at a fixed frequency. The incoming unsteady carrier-phase eddies were measured with a hot-film sensor upstream of a particle bed, and the particle motion was captured by …

Double-Scoring: Reliable Extraction Of Strong Lottery Tickets, Bryce Christopherson, Jack Baretz, Darian Colgrove, Salah Dandan Jul 2026

Double-Scoring: Reliable Extraction Of Strong Lottery Tickets, Bryce Christopherson, Jack Baretz, Darian Colgrove, Salah Dandan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The lottery ticket hypothesis proposes that large random neural networks contain sparse subnetworks that can match the performance of dense models after compara- ble training. A stronger version asserts that sufficiently overparameterized random networks contain subnetworks that are already accurate before any weight training. Existing theory establishes that such strong lottery tickets exist, but reliable ex- traction remains difficult. We revisit edge-popup, a frozen-weight score-training method for extracting strong tickets, and identify layerwise sparsity selection as a central bottleneck. We introduce double-scoring, an augmented score-space parameterization that replaces a layerwise sparsity search with optimization over enlarged score tensors. We prove …

Voices Of The Homeless: Phenomenological Portraits Of Parental Engagement Among Parents Experiencing Homelessness, Geneva Marie Winterbottom Jul 2026

Voices Of The Homeless: Phenomenological Portraits Of Parental Engagement Among Parents Experiencing Homelessness, Geneva Marie Winterbottom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Family homelessness is a widespread crisis that disrupts the educational experiences of thousands of children, including South Carolina where rates of family homelessness continue to grow. Although research has explored families and homelessness, limited research has focused on the parental engagement of homeless parents. This study explored the parental engagement among homeless parents in South Carolina.

Guided by van Manen’s (1990) interpretive phenomenology, four parents residing in a South Carolina homeless shelter participated in semi-structured interviews and created self portraits, which were analyzed using the hermeneutic circle to derive phenomenological insight.

Findings revealed that parental engagement while homeless was like …

African American Women Counselors’ Lived Experiences Of Burnout Due To Microaggressions, Anquitra Walton Jul 2026

African American Women Counselors’ Lived Experiences Of Burnout Due To Microaggressions, Anquitra Walton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Within the counseling profession, African American women navigate unique challenges in the workplace, often experiencing microaggressions that contribute to stress, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion. While systemic racial issues drive workplace microaggressions, counselor educators and supervisors remain ill-equipped to support African American women through the resulting burnout. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of African American women counselors to understand how microaggressions can lead to burnout and affect their psychological well-being. Guided by a transcendental-phenomenological qualitative framework, semi-structured interviews were conducted to capture participants’ experiences, exploring the lived experiences of African American women counselors who …

Perceived Cognitive Function And Continuous Glucose Monitor Use In Older Adults: A Qualitative Study, Heather E. Cuevas, Jeeyeon Kim Jul 2026

Perceived Cognitive Function And Continuous Glucose Monitor Use In Older Adults: A Qualitative Study, Heather E. Cuevas, Jeeyeon Kim

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

CGM is used to examine glucose data against reports of diabetes self-management (DMSM) behaviors, allowing characterization of biobehavioral processes.1 The inclusion of DMSM behaviors is crucial to a full understanding of the relationships between glucose variability and cognitive function.2,3 Unfortunately, only a few trials have evaluated the effectiveness of CGM in older adults with T2DM.4,5 Because older adults with T2DM are a heterogeneous group with variable functional and cognitive abilities, clinicians must consider whether each patient can use CGM and which CGM device that best fits patients' needs. The purpose of this project was to investigate how …

Ecological Gdp Of “Lucid Waters And Lush Mountains Are Invaluable Assets”, Wang Guangqian, Deyu Zhong Jul 2026

Ecological Gdp Of “Lucid Waters And Lush Mountains Are Invaluable Assets”, Wang Guangqian, Deyu Zhong

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Based on the concept of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, this study investigates the theoretical connotation and accounting pathways of ecological GDP. (1) The core connotation of ecological value is elucidated from three dimensions—time, space, and civilization—and an economic quantification framework of principal–interest–interest rate is constructed. With four categories of ecological products as the foundation, the Green Certificate as the entitlement instrument, and a 5% annual simple interest rate as the accounting benchmark, ecological value is transformed from qualitative description to quantitative accounting. (2) The concept of ecological new quality productive forces is proposed, revealing its four-dimensional …

From Resource Mapping To Mechanism Identification: A Lunar Tethered-Satellite Exploration System And China’S Strategic Opportunities, Wei Yong, Zhiping He, Yanchu Yang, Ke Wang, Junqiang Zhu

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Lunar exploration is undergoing a paradigm shift from resource mapping to mechanism identification. Key processes, such as the modulation of volatiles by magnetic anomalies and the contribution of Earth wind to surface hydration, require strictly synchronized observations of magnetic-field gradients, particle fluxes, spectrally detected volatiles, and subsurface hydrogen within the same spatiotemporal window. However, a still-unfilled “near-lunar-surface intermediate layer” gap exists between conventional single-spacecraft orbiters and landed rovers: the capability for multi-altitude, multi-parameter, strictly synchronized process observations. A tethered dual-satellite system, consisting of a main satellite and a subsatellite connected by a 5–10 km short tether, naturally provides a dual-altitude …

Catalogue Of The Water Striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) Of Mississippi, Chase G. Fry, Patricia L.S. Wooden

Midsouth Entomologist

Water striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) are skating aquatic insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts that opportunistically feed on prey trapped by surface tension. The presence or absence of water striders and other aquatic Hemiptera in water systems may be important indicators of water quality. Despite their importance, the last aquatic Hemiptera checklist for the state was published in 1988. Since this publication, humans have altered waterways to meet their needs, and Gerridae taxonomy has continued to evolve. This study aims to create a current checklist of Gerridae, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the species found in Mississippi before aquatic habitats are …

Designing Data Centers For Demand Response Through A Construction-Phase Readiness Index, Arezou Shafaghat, Da Hu, Ali Keyvanfar

Faculty Articles

AI-driven growth is pushing data-center electricity demand from 415 TWh (2024) toward 945 TWh by 2030. Demand-response research has matured on operational levers but treats the physical envelope as largely exogenous, leaving construction-phase decisions that bound achievable flexibility unmodeled. This article integrates three previously separate bodies of literature (data-center demand response, grid-interactive efficient buildings, and stochastic optimal control under irreversibility) into a single framework that prices construction-phase flexibility as a portfolio of real options, pairing elicitation-derived (FAHP) weights with simulation-derived (Sobol) variance indices. None of the individual techniques is new; the contribution is their synthesis and the finding that architectural …

The Sacred Garden: An Exploration Of Black Women’S Sexual Pleasure As Healing And Liberatory Practice, Brittany M. Young Jul 2026

The Sacred Garden: An Exploration Of Black Women’S Sexual Pleasure As Healing And Liberatory Practice, Brittany M. Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Much of sexology (i.e., sex science) employs a non-inclusive, sex-negative and anti-Black perspective. Most research about Black sexuality, specifically Black women’s sexuality, is rooted in negativity, promiscuity, shame, and the erasure of pleasure. To undo such a narrow, harmful, and dehumanizing view of Black women’s sexuality, this qualitative study employed an intersectional, pleasure-focused, and sex-positive framework to explore how Endarkened (Black) women’s sexual pleasure is a healing and liberatory practice. This study also delved into Endarkened women’s femininity/feminine expression to understand how Black femininity functions as a form of feminine resistance by not existing within patriarchal femininity. Guided by Lorde’s …

Influence Of Externalizing And Adhd-Related Phenotypes On Emotion Dysregulation In Adults: An Event-Related Potential Study Of Cognitive Preappraisal And Motivated Attention, Logan Michael Brewer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Emotion dysregulation (ED) has become increasingly recognized as an important dimension of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and externalizing pathology. However, little is known regarding the neural processes underlying ED in adults with ADHD. Two event-related potentials (ERPs), the late positive potential (LPP) and probe P3, have been found to capture important facets of motivational attention during the passive viewing of affective images. We aimed to explore the influence of ADHD and externalizing symptomatology--as indexed by self-report and behavioral measures--on the centroparietal LPP, frontocentral LPP, and probe P3 using a preappraisal paradigm. Sixty-eight undergraduate students completed the Externalizing Spectrum Inventory (ESI-100) and …
