Two Dimensional Crossover Of Cuprate Ladders, Jane Kate Williams, Rudolf T. Clay Jul 2026

Two Dimensional Crossover Of Cuprate Ladders, Jane Kate Williams, Rudolf T. Clay

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

The cuprate Sr14-x Cax Cu24 041 is the only known ladder cuprate superconductor, exhibiting a maximum superconducting transition temperature of approximately Tc=9 K under an applied pressure of 4.5 GPa. Prior to the onset of superconductivity, the material exhibits increasingly two-dimensional electronic behavior as inter-ladder coupling strengthens. Negative charge-transfer energies, are predicted to further enhance inter-ladder coupling, motivating the study of larger coupled-ladder systems. This work employs the Constrained Path Quantum Monte Carlo (CPQMC) algorithm to extend previous studies from two coupled ladders to larger ladder geometries. Simulations were performed for 2x8 ladders (32 …

Continuous Data Assimilation For Geophysical Flow, Amanda E. Diegel, Sehani Edirisinghe, Mary Chase Pittman Jul 2026

Continuous Data Assimilation For Geophysical Flow, Amanda E. Diegel, Sehani Edirisinghe, Mary Chase Pittman

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

We consider continuous data assimilation, a numerical method which incorporates known data, to model geophysical flow. Geophysical flow simulations are important to weather and ocean modeling, the study of climate change, modeling pollutant transport in the ocean, and many other areas. We study the barotropic vorticity model, which tracks fluid vorticity and the streamfunction, using the finite element method with continuous data assimilation. Utilizing MATLAB with the finite element C++/MATLAB toolbox FELICITY, we seek to answer whether incorporating known vorticity data, but not streamfunction data, into the numerical simulation in real time with lead to long-term accurate approximate solutions even …

Refining And Scaling Particle-Based Soil Models, Gillian Londa, Bohumir Jelinek Jul 2026

Refining And Scaling Particle-Based Soil Models, Gillian Londa, Bohumir Jelinek

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

Wheel-soil interaction simulations are critical for evaluating the performance of off-road vehicles, construction equipment, and planetary exploration systems. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) provides a physics-based approach for modeling these interactions but requires significant computational resources, making efficient use of high-performance computing (HPC) systems essential. This project evaluates the parallel performance of the open- source YADE DEM Wheel-Soil Simulator, a simulation framework developed at Mississippi State University and based on the DEM soil model of Nakanishi et al. (2020). A benchmark simulation representing a fixed 6.3% wheel-slip condition was selected to provide a consistent basis for performance evaluation. Existing benchmark …

Dimensional Crossover And Suppression Of The Spin-Peierls State, Medha A. Fotedar, Rudolf T. Clay Jul 2026

Dimensional Crossover And Suppression Of The Spin-Peierls State, Medha A. Fotedar, Rudolf T. Clay

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

The Spin-Peierls (SP) transition is a classic phenomenon in low-dimensional quantum mechanics, wherein strong magnetoelastic coupling drives a structural lattice distortion, opening a spin gap and establishing a dimerized ground state. The SP transition is well understood in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) materials. In the organic charge- transfer tetramethyltetrathiafulvalene (TMTTF)2X salts, pressure suppresses the SP transition, giving way to antiferromagnetism and then superconductivity. Pressure is expected to increase the two-dimensional character of the material but also to introduce geometric frustration and competing magnetic fluctuations. Our central question is whether these higher-dimensional effects suppress or destroy the SP state in favor …

Development Of A Culturally Tailored Care Model For Chronic Disease Management In The Coastal Community: A Modified Delphi Study, Laode Saltar, Heltty Heltty, Sitti Mikarna Kaimuddin

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia

Chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus, are increasing in Indonesia’s coastal communities including the Bajo population in Southeast Sulawesi. Limited healthcare access, cultural barriers, and low preventive health engagement exacerbate the disease burden in these communities. Culturally tailored interventions are needed to enhance self-awareness and improve chronic disease management. This study aimed to develop and validate a culturally sensitive care model for chronic disease management in the Bajo coastal community. A three-round modified Delphi method was used with 26 panelists representing health professionals, community leaders, policymakers, and family members recruited through community health centers and …

Computational Investigations In Cyclohexanol Conversion In Zeolites, Esther Edwards, John Michael Lane, James Caldwell, Neeraj Rai Jul 2026

Computational Investigations In Cyclohexanol Conversion In Zeolites, Esther Edwards, John Michael Lane, James Caldwell, Neeraj Rai

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

The acid-catalyzed conversion of cyclohexanol to cyclohexene is a vital chemical process across the pharmaceutical, polymer, and petrochemical industries. Zeolites are porous catalysts known for their shape and size selectivity, which makes them especially useful for this reaction by preventing the formation of bulkier, undesirable side products. In this work, we computationally explore the reaction mechanism by which cyclohexanol dehydrates at Bronsted acid sites within the zeolite frameworks MFI and FAU. To overcome the high computational cost of Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) while capturing long-timescale dynamics, we trained a Machine Learning Interatomic Potential (MUP) using data sampled from short …

Intermembrane Coupling Between Bcl-Xl And The Ip3 Receptor Supports Local Ca2+ Transfer At Er-Mitochondrial Contacts, Arijita Ghosh, David Weaver, Chi Li, György Hajnóczky Jul 2026

Intermembrane Coupling Between Bcl-Xl And The Ip3 Receptor Supports Local Ca2+ Transfer At Er-Mitochondrial Contacts, Arijita Ghosh, David Weaver, Chi Li, György Hajnóczky

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Bcl-xL, an anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family protein, engages laterally with Bak/Bax in the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) to inhibit apoptosis and interacts with the IP3 receptor Ca2+ channels (IP3Rs) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane to control Ca2+ release. It is unknown if OMM-localized Bcl-xL can also interact in trans with IP3Rs at ER-mitochondrial contacts to form a tethering complex that supports IP3R-mediated local Ca2+ transfer from ER to mitochondria. We establish that IP3R-mitochondria Ca2+ signal propagation depends on Bcl-xL. By targeting Bcl-xL specifically to different subcellular compartments, we find that OMM-localized Bcl-xL increases the efficacy …

How Localized Physical Processes Influence Large-Scale Phytoplankton Blooms Near The Sea Ice Edge In The Greenland Sea, Abigail P. Heiser, Till J.W. Wagner, Manfredi Manizza, Dustin Carroll, Conner W. Lester, Dimitris Menemenlis

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Arctic Ocean has experienced intensifying phytoplankton spring blooms near the sea ice edge. Here, we investigate the drivers of such near-ice blooms in the Greenland Sea by comparing satellite and in situ observations with the ECCO-Darwin physical–biogeochemical state estimate. Satellite data reveal pronounced spring blooms within ~ 200 km of the ice, a signal that is not reproduced in ECCO-Darwin. Observations further reveal that primary production is tightly linked to submesoscale meltwater eddies shed from the ice edge, which are not currently resolved by ECCO-Darwin. We argue that the relatively coarse spatial resolution, together with biases in sea ice …

Rethinking The Legal Status Quo In Cyberspace To Legally Attribute State Responsibility, And Enhance Accountability And Deterrence, Dan Efrony Jul 2026

Rethinking The Legal Status Quo In Cyberspace To Legally Attribute State Responsibility, And Enhance Accountability And Deterrence, Dan Efrony

International Law Studies

The absence of formal legal attributions of State responsibility for malicious cyber operations reflects a strategic choice by influential States—foremost the United States and the United Kingdom—rather than doctrinal certainty. So long as States avoid creating legal rules for attribution, they entrench cyberspace as a legal gray zone and expose the limits of collective attribution as a governance mechanism. This article identifies probative and institutional impediments in the secondary rules of attribution: the effective control test is difficult to satisfy for proxy cyber operations, the lack of an authoritative standard of proof enables plausible deniability, and, absent consent, States remain …

A Visitation Grid For Complete Coverage Foraging In Robot Swarms, Arturo Gonzalez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang, Qi Lu Jul 2026

A Visitation Grid For Complete Coverage Foraging In Robot Swarms, Arturo Gonzalez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang, Qi Lu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The complete collection of sparse resources in large, unknown environments remains a challenging problem for autonomous robot swarms. Previous studies have shown that a substantial portion of total mission time is consumed during the final stage of collection, where only a small fraction of randomly scattered resources remain. Consequently, many existing swarm foraging algorithms (search and collection) focus on collecting most resources within a limited time window, rather than improving end-stage efficiency for collecting all resources. We propose a grid-based stochastic foraging strategy that explicitly reduces redundant visits and accelerates late-stage collection. The unknown search area is partitioned into a …

Governance, Culture, And Law: The Expanding Scope Of Environmental Science And Sustainable Development Research, Ahyaudin Sodri, Herdis Herdiansyah Jul 2026

Governance, Culture, And Law: The Expanding Scope Of Environmental Science And Sustainable Development Research, Ahyaudin Sodri, Herdis Herdiansyah

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Environmental science emerged as a discipline based on physical measurements, such as soil pollutant levels (Ailijiang et al., 2022), ecological restoration (Yue et al., 2026), city surface temperature (Shafizadeh-Moghadam et al., 2025), and microbial density in air samples (Hayleeyesus & Manaye, 2014). However, its objects of study increasingly extend beyond the confines of the laboratory. Questions that were once sufficiently answered with measurement data now require answers through draft laws, Constitutional Court decisions, financial reports of mining companies, and even traditional ritual discourses governing community access to forests. In other words, environmental …

A Comparative Critique Of Masculine Domination In Madame Bovary (1856) And Gemma Bovery (1999), Aqeela Hamarthya Czecheska Humayra, Diah Kartini Lasman

International Review of Humanities Studies

This study examines how social construction influences the representation of female autonomy through the transition of medium and temporal context. Its primary focus is to compare the mechanisms of masculine domination in Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel Madame Bovary (1856) with Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel adaptation Gemma Bovery (1999). Utilizing Hutcheon’s adaptation theory (2013) and de Beauvoir’s existential feminism (1949), complemented by Freytag’s dramatic structure analysis (1900) as the main framework, this research proceeds from the premise that the transposition from text to visual medium has significant implications for changes in narrative strategies and plot. This study highlights the differing manifestations …

The Indonesian Conjunction Dan ‘And’ And Its Chinese Correspondences: A Corpus-Based Approach To Syntactic And Register Variation, Hatmi Idris Jul 2026

The Indonesian Conjunction Dan ‘And’ And Its Chinese Correspondences: A Corpus-Based Approach To Syntactic And Register Variation, Hatmi Idris

International Review of Humanities Studies

This study examines how the Indonesian conjunction dan ‘and’ is rendered in Chinese across syntactic units using a corpus-based contrastive approach. Focusing on children’s books, classic novels, and online news, it analyzes coordination at word, phrase, and clause level from a syntactic and register perspective. Findings show that dan ‘and’ does not correspond to a single Chinese form. At the word and phrase level, nominal coordination employs hé (和) ‘and’, yǔ (与) ‘and’, and yǐjí (以及) ‘as well as’ , with formal news discourse favoring yǔ (与) ‘and’ and yǐjí (以及) ‘as well as’. In verbal coordination, bìng (并) ‘furthermore’ …
