The modulation of low-energy galactic cosmic rays reflects interplanetary magnetic field variations and can provide useful information on solar activity. An array of ground-surface detectors can reveal the secondary particles, which originate from the interaction of cosmic rays with the atmosphere. In this work, we present an investigation of the low-threshold rate (scaler) time series recorded in 16 yr of operation by the Pierre Auger Observatory surface detectors in Malargüe, Argentina. Through an advanced spectral analysis, we detected highly statistically significant variations in the time series with periods ranging from the decadal to the daily scale. We investigate their origin, …

Stability Analysis Of The Eulerian-Lagrangian Finite Volume Methods For Nonlinear Hyperbolic Equations In One Space Dimension, Yang Yang, Jiajie Chen, Jing Mei Qiu

Michigan Tech Publications

In this paper, we construct a novel Eulerian-Lagrangian finite volume (ELFV) method for nonlinear scalar hyperbolic equations in one space dimension. It is well known that the exact solutions to such problems may contain shocks though the initial conditions are smooth, and direct numerical methods may suffer from restricted time step sizes. To relieve the restriction, we propose an ELFV method, where the space-time domain was separated by the partition lines originated from the cell interfaces whose slopes are obtained following the Rakine-Hugoniot junmp condition. Unfortunately, to avoid the intersection of the partition lines, the time step sizes are still …

Co-Operative Care: The Case For Worker Co-Operative Elder Care In Ireland, Gerard Doyle

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Ireland’s population age profile is forecasted to increase over the coming decades which will have implications for the care responsibilities of families and the state. However, there is a paucity of quality elder care in Ireland. Elder care worker co-operatives could contribute to meeting this shortfall in supply. This study examines the impact of co-owned elder care provision in Ireland. A case study approach is employed with the Great Care Co-op (GCC) being the case selected. The findings emphasise that the GCC provides a quality service to its care recipients. The careworker members and family members of care recipients both …

An Exploration Of Students' Recollections After An Asynchronous, On-Site Academic Library Tour, Adrienne Warner Jul 2025

An Exploration Of Students' Recollections After An Asynchronous, On-Site Academic Library Tour, Adrienne Warner

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Once an integral component to library instruction programs, tours of academic library spaces are less common despite students’ continued need for study spaces with various qualities. This study asks, "What do students remember after taking an asynchronous, on-site academic library tour?" Qualitative analysis finds that, while students value library study spaces, they also report predominantly positive feelings about the library and the tour itself. This research suggests that technical affordances can mitigate some historical drawbacks of tours while offering students a valuable library instruction experience.

Objective: Many epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) risk factors relate to sex hormones. The association between these factors and the expression of androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor-α (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR) in tumors is unknown.

Method: We linked epidemiologic, AR/ER/PR tumor expression, and survival data from 19 studies in the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (OCAC; 4762 cases, 20,888 controls) and the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Analysis (OTTA) consortium (5737 cases). We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) between hormonally-linked factors and tumor AR/ER/PR expression using polytomous logistic regression. We assessed survival by AR/ER/PR tumor expression overall and …

A thorough understanding of CRPS is essential for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and enhancing patients' quality of …

The Methane Clumped Isotope Signatures Of The Acetoclastic And Methylotrophic Methanogenesis Pathways, Mia L. Thompson Jul 2025

The Methane Clumped Isotope Signatures Of The Acetoclastic And Methylotrophic Methanogenesis Pathways, Mia L. Thompson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and critical energy source for the global economy. Atmospheric methane concentrations play a critical role in global warming, while mitigating methane emissions may provide route to short-term reduction of warming effects. In order to track rates and sources of emissions, it is first necessary to understand the sources and sinks of methane; yet, there are challenges in distinguishing abiotic (water/rock), thermogenic, and biogenic methane. Traditional approaches of using the bulk isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and hydrogen (δD) of methane have limitations due to overlapping signatures and sensitivity to substrate isotope composition. In …

The Ghannouchi Test: The Compatibility Of Religious Ideas And Secular Democracy, Andrew P. Sheppe Jul 2025

The Ghannouchi Test: The Compatibility Of Religious Ideas And Secular Democracy, Andrew P. Sheppe

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Secular, democratic societies and governments evolved out of religious societies and defined themselves partially in opposition to religious authority. This historical relationship has led to a debate about the compatibility between religious ideas and modern, secular society. Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde posited that secular, democratic societies still depend on religious foundations. Jürgen Habermas disagrees, claiming that processes of rational dialogue can provide sufficient support.

Two prominent twentieth century theologians, Reinhold Niebuhr and Abraham Joshua Heschel demonstrate that democratic systems are enriched and protected by theistic ideas, thus supporting Böckenförde’s dictum. However, they both recognize the importance of epistemic humility and a …

Pediatric Cancer Predisposition And Surveillance Update: Summary Perspective And Future Directions, Garrett M Brodeur, Lisa R Diller, Kim E Nichols, Sharon E Plon, Christopher C Porter, David Malkin

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

An increasing number of studies suggest that a significant proportion of children with cancer harbor an underlying predisposition to malignancy, and it is likely that this proportion will only increase. Targeted surveillance for these individuals would likely improve outcomes. Historically, however, for most predisposition syndromes, there were no standardized surveillance protocols for early detection of cancer in predisposed individuals. Therefore, the Pediatric Cancer Working Group of the American Association for Cancer Research convened a workshop in 2016 to develop consensus surveillance recommendations (published in 2017) for children and adolescents with the most common cancer predisposition syndromes. These recommendations provided a …
