Calibrated Structures Of Feeling: Cultural Citizenship And The Reproduction Of The Military In Singapore, John Lowe, George Wong Jul 2025

Calibrated Structures Of Feeling: Cultural Citizenship And The Reproduction Of The Military In Singapore, John Lowe, George Wong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article discusses the nexus between Raymond Williams’ structure of feelings and the reproduction of military masculinity as cultural citizenship. By placing the gaze upon National Service in the Singapore Armed Forces as a rite of passage into manhood, this work uses representations of the military in popular culture and souvenirs/ephemera to elucidate how structures of feeling are calibrated as masculinity the state wants its citizenry to internalize. These render military masculinity emergent for Singaporean male bodies. With the male body functioning as an important edifice of the military, emotions toward military service are the connective tissue between enactments of …

Evola’S Afterlives: Esotericism And Politics In The Posthumous Reception Of Julius Evola, Peter Staudenmaier Jul 2025

Evola’S Afterlives: Esotericism And Politics In The Posthumous Reception Of Julius Evola, Peter Staudenmaier

History Faculty Research and Publications

Since his death half a century ago, the legacy of Julius Evola (1898–1974) has been marked by a series of distortions, from basic biographical facts to serious misconceptions about the relation between the esoteric and political aspects of his work. This article assesses claims in publications from A. James Gregor, Hans Thomas Hakl, Gianfranco de Turris and others, contrasting them to the archival record and original editions of Evola’s texts. It offers reflections on the broader dynamics involved in the posthumous reception of a figure like Evola who consistently straddled the boundaries between esotericism and politics, examining what this case …

The mid to late 1600s were a time of intense societal change in England as a result of the English Civil War and the abdication and restoration of the English monarchy. During this time of religious and political upheaval, those who had historically been silenced found more opportunities to speak up regarding recent changes. This was the case for Katherine Philips and Aphra Behn, two female writers who had their own distinct views on the recent political and religious upheaval. In past studies concerning these two women, there has been a trend of either …

Obstetric Fistula Prevalence Among Internally Displaced Women In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kyli Fox Soug Jul 2025

Obstetric Fistula Prevalence Among Internally Displaced Women In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kyli Fox Soug

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

Obstetric fistulas are rare in the West but common for women in the Global South, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Fistulas are caused by prolonged or obstructed labor which forces downward pressure on the baby’s head and the mother’s pelvis. This pressure creates a non-natural opening in the genital region. Fistulas cause leakage of waste and therefore are often accompanied by unwanted odors. As of 2021, the prevalence of obstetric fistulas was 2 million women in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and 3 in every 1000 women of reproductive age in the world have a fistula. In the …

Physics Oriented Deep Learning For Material Prediction And Generation, Nihang Fu Jul 2025

Physics Oriented Deep Learning For Material Prediction And Generation, Nihang Fu

Theses and Dissertations

The discovery of new materials is critical to advancing various industries, but traditional experimental methods for materials discovery remain slow and resource-intensive. Recent advances in machine learning (ML), particularly deep learning (DL), have greatly improved and accelerated two main aspects of modern computational material discovery: material design (e.g., material generation) and material screening (e.g., property prediction). However, a key challenge remains: standard ML models often struggle to perform domain-specific tasks effectively. Incorporating domain-specific knowledge, specifically the underlying physics of materials, into ML/DL models is key to improving the accuracy and reliability of material generation and prediction models.

This dissertation discusses …

The Other Side Of Trusting: The Implications Of Vulnerability As A Core Component Of Organizational Relationships, Sam Dylan Strizver Jul 2025

The Other Side Of Trusting: The Implications Of Vulnerability As A Core Component Of Organizational Relationships, Sam Dylan Strizver

Theses and Dissertations

Trusting behavior—discretionary risk-taking with another party—is the primary means of facilitating productive workplace relationships (Zand, 1979; Mayer, Davis, & Schoorman, 1995). Yet, little empirical evidence exists to explain what happens after employees engage in trusting behavior, but before outcomes materialize—otherwise termed the “vulnerability phase” (Ballinger, Schoorman, & Sharma, 2024: 2). To address this neglect, I develop a theoretical framework that positions vulnerability as a core psychological state within the trust process, shaped by trustors’ cognitive appraisals of risk severity and uncertainty. Drawing from research on stress and well-being, the framework also identifies coping as a key response to vulnerability, moderated …

In Vivo Analysis Of Fe-S Cluster Assembly And Iron Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Dexter Mclaurin Reasons

Theses and Dissertations

Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are an essential cofactor for a wide range of cellular processes, and their assembly and storage require tight regulation.

In Escherichia coli (E. coli), there are two pathways of Fe-S cluster assembly, the Isc and the Suf pathways. The Isc pathway is used under good growth conditions, and the Suf pathway is used under iron starvation and oxidative stress conditions. Once the cluster has been assembled on the scaffold protein of either pathway, it is transferred to Fe-S cluster trafficking proteins. In E. coli, the monothiol glutaredoxin GrxD and the BolA-type proteins BolA and IbaG …
