Digital Bibliography In The Age Of Linked Data, Kate Ozment
Digital Bibliography In The Age Of Linked Data, Kate Ozment
Faculty Scholarship
The article explores how the interplay of ideological values and technological capacities have shaped the digital bibliography of British print history. Using a misgendering in the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) as a case study, the article explores how information flows through resources like Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), and Early English Books Online (EEBO), library catalogues, WorldCat, and retail outlets like Amazon. The article argues that as data from the ESTC is reproduced through linked data structures, information is ‘authorized’ far beyond what a single resource would do alone or what its original authors imagined or designed. While feminist, …

Experimental Determination Of Diffusion Flame Extinction Boundaries Over A Pmma Sphere: The Effect Of Sub-Surface Solid Heating, James S. T'Ien, Chengyao Li
Faculty Scholarship
The SoFIE-GEL (Solid Fuel Ignition and Extinction-Growth and Extinction Limit) microgravity combustion experiment was recently conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In these tests, diffusion flame extinction limits of 4-cm diameter PMMA (polymethacrylate) spheres were determined as a function of forced flows (0.2 to 80 cm/s), oxygen concentrations (13 % to 34 %) and pressure (0.15–1.1 atm). In particular, the effect of sample heat-up is investigated. The sample surface layer is preheated by the ignitor and the diffusion flame itself before the extinction procedure (e.g. flow velocity decrease or increase or oxygen decrease) is implemented. The degree of sample …

Energetic And Economic Aspects Of Rebound, Part Ii: Applications Of The Framework, Matthew Kuperus Heun, Gregor Semieniuk, Paul Brockway
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Widespread implementation of energy efficiency is a key greenhouse gas emissions mitigation measure, but rebound can ‘‘take back’’ energy savings. However, the absence of solid analytical foundations hinders empirical determination of rebound magnitudes. In Part I, we developed foundations of a rigorous, analytical, consumer-sided rebound framework that is approachable for both energy analysts and economists. In this paper (Part II), we develop energy, expenditure, and consumption planes, a novel, mutually consistent, and numerically precise way to visualize and illustrate rebound. Further, we operationalize the macro factor (k) for macroeconomic rebound. Using the framework and rebound planes, we calculate and show …

Tkbe : Two Key Broadcast Encryption For The Iot, Rachit Parikh
Tkbe : Two Key Broadcast Encryption For The Iot, Rachit Parikh
Master’s Dissertations
The growing usage of the Internet of Things (IoT) has made it necessary to ensure
the security of these interconnected devices. Key management becomes particularly
challenging when devices are not always online due to resource constraints or business
decisions. Moreover, the IoT infrastructure typically relies on the publish-subscribe
model for communication, which raises additional security considerations since the
message broker becomes a central point of attack. Existing solutions with end-toend
encryption from publisher to subscriber are either computationally expensive for
resource constrained devices or compromise on the decoupling in publish/subscribe
systems. This thesis tackles the problem of efficient key management …

Synthesis Of A New Composite Nanomaterial Consisting Of Bentonite-Polyethylene Glycolphthalate, Tariq Yassin Mahmoud
Synthesis Of A New Composite Nanomaterial Consisting Of Bentonite-Polyethylene Glycolphthalate, Tariq Yassin Mahmoud
Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences
In this study, a new composite material was characterized and prepared by polymerizing ethylene glycol located among bentonite layers with phthalic anhydride. The results showed that the polymer bonds with the clay structure through hydrogen bonding. The polymerization process led to the destruction of the three-dimensional crystal structure of the clay and the isolation of its layers in the form of two-dimensional nanoscale shells. The growth of the polymer around the isolated clay layers increased the total particle size at the microscopic scale.

Evaluation Of Phytotoxicity Of Greenly Treated Domestic Wastewater By Spent Plant Leaf Powders, Adnan Ahmad Ali-Nizam, Magdi Amin, Isam Shaker Hemza
Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences
Health and ecosystems face widespread, impactful problems. Untreated wastewater is discharged into waterways and lands in most developing countries, containing harmful substances and pathogens. WHO estimates that nearly 1.7 billion people drink contaminated water in developing countries, and that contamination leads to nearly 500,000 diarrheal deaths each year. However, existing treatment methods are insufficient to remove dissolved substances and specific pollutants; they are very expensive, energy-intensive, require advanced technologies, and high operational skills. The process of removing pollutants from wastewater using plant waste powders involves a combination of mechanisms, including adsorption, complexation, and ion exchange. These processes are characterized by …

The Mysterious Power Of Land Use Law: Constructing A Framework Law For Climate Resilient Development, John R. Nolon, Maureen Hartwell
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This Article introduces and explains Climate Resilient Development (CRD), which is relied upon by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a primary method of managing climate change. CRD "integrates adaptation measures and their enabling conditions with mitigation to advance sustainable development for all." 1 CRD illuminates the close relationship between adaptive and mitigative development and land use law, particularly the authority delegated to local governments to regulate and incentivize private land development and conservation. The Article unveils a legal structure that is followed in most states to organize local laws that affect land development; as such, it facilitates …

Utahns’ Awareness Of The Drying Up Of The Great Salt Lake, Ashley Young
Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
The Great Salt Lake provides several benefits for the state of Utah. It supports industry, recreational activities, and aquaculture. It also provides wetland habitat to twelve million migratory birds.1 Due to drought induced by climate change and human water use, the lake has been shrinking rapidly in a process known as desiccation. The desiccation threatens the lake’s economic and ecological benefits while also posing other potential challenges. Dust from the dry lakebed may also cause health challenges for humans, as the dust contains harmful amounts of arsenic, lithium, copper, and other metals.2
Utah’s ability to combat desiccation of …
Systemic, Cultural, And Institutional Barriers Significantly Limit Black Girls' Access To Mental Health Care In The United States, And Reform Is Needed To Create Equitable Support Systems, Macie Anderson
Distinguished Student Scholarship Collection
This paper explores how systemic, cultural, and institutional barriers prevent Black girls in the United States from accessing equitable mental health care. Drawing from peer-reviewed research and government reports, it highlights the roles of racism, stereotypes, underrepresentation in mental health professions, and school-based discipline disparities. The argument pushes for reforms in access, education, and culturally responsive care, advocating for justice-centered mental health systems that affirm and support Black girls holistically. This work seeks to challenge stigmas, expose inequities, and ignite change by centering the lived experiences of an often-overlooked population. [Abstract provided by the author.]

This review explores the antimicrobial efficacy of various lanthanum-based nanoparticles, including La2O3, La(OH)3, and LaF3, highlighting their mechanisms of action such as disruption of microbial cell walls, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and interference with microbial DNA and protein synthesis. Despite their promising attributes, several challenges hinder their practical application, including limited understanding of their mechanisms, concerns over biocompatibility and toxicity, and difficulties in scaling up production. Emerging trends in nanoparticle research, such as surface functionalization, smart delivery …
Bicomplex Hardy Classes Of Solutions To Beltrami Equations And The Schwarz Boundary Value Problem, William L. Blair
Bicomplex Hardy Classes Of Solutions To Beltrami Equations And The Schwarz Boundary Value Problem, William L. Blair
Math Faculty Publications and Presentations
We define Hardy classes of bicomplex-valued functions on the complex unit disk which solve bicomplex versions of the Beltrami and related equations. Using representations in terms of their complex-valued counterparts, we show these bicomplex-valued functions recover the boundary behavior associated with the classic holomorphic Hardy spaces. This work generalizes known results for complex-valued functions and continues recent work in the setting of bicomplex analogues of Hardy spaces of both holomorphic and generalized analytic functions. Also, we show Schwarz and Dirichlet boundary value problems associated with the bicomplex Beltrami equation are solvable and provide solution formulas.

Resident Case Series: The Utility Of The Athletic Shoulder Test Using Wireless Portable Force Plates For Measuring Peak Force In Ncaa Division One Collegiate Quarterbacks, Carmen Sclafani, Patrick Smith, Terry Mchugh, Patricia Crane
Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Given the high incidence of shoulder injuries among quarterbacks due to the repetitive stress of the overhead throwing motion, there is a need for targeted, sport-specific assessments that reflect the functional demands of throwing. The Athletic Shoulder (ASH) test, previously validated in rugby and baseball populations, offers a potential solution for upper extremity strength assessment in football quarterbacks. The primary purpose of this case series was to explore the feasibility of conducting the ASH test as a method for evaluating upper extremity strength in overhead athletes, specifically collegiate quarterbacks.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
METHODS: Three NCAA Division I quarterbacks …

Creating Blood Analogs To Mimic Steady-State Non-Newtonian Shear-Thinning Characteristics Under Various Thermal Conditions, Hang Yi, Alexander Wang, Christopher Wang, Jared Chong, Chungyiu Ma, Luke Bramlage, Bryan Ludwig, Zifeng Yang
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Blood analogs are widely employed in in vitro experiments such as particle image velocity (PIV) to secure hemodynamics, assisting pathophysiological diagnoses of neurovascular and cardiovascular diseases, as well as pre-surgical planning and intraoperative orientation. To obtain accurate physical parameters, which are critical for diagnosis and treatment, blood analogs should exhibit realistic non-Newtonian shear-thinning features. In this study, two types of blood analogs working under room temperature (293.15 K) were created to mimic the steady-state shear-thinning features of blood over a temperature range of 295 to 312 K and a shear range of 1~250 s−1 at a hematocrit of ~40%. Mass loss from polar ice sheets is poorly constrained in estimates of future global sea-level rise. Today, the marine-based West Antarctic Ice Sheet is losing mass at an accelerating rate, most notably in the Thwaites and Pine Island glacier drainage basins. Early Pliocene surface temperatures were about 4 °C warmer than preindustrial and maximum sea level stood ~20 m above present. Using data from a sediment archive on the Amundsen Sea continental rise, we investigate the impact of prolonged Pliocene ocean warmth on the ice-sheet−ocean system. We show that, in contrast to today, during peak ocean warming ~4.6 − 4.5 …

Modeling The Impact Of Explosive Volcanism On Biogeochemical Cycling At The Peak Of The Late Paleozoic Icehouse, Lily S. Pfeifer, Qingting Wu, Ying Cui, Gerilyn S. Soreghan
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The peak of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) coincided with atmospheric carbon dioxide (pCO2) lows, and large-magnitude fluctuations in glacial-interglacial pCO2, but the driver(s) for pCO2 drawdown at this time remain debated. Backed by parameters for the frequency and magnitude of Late Carboniferous volcanism derived from the rock record, we apply an intermediate complexity Earth system model to evaluate the biogeochemical impacts of ash-borne nutrients from frequent (decadal) and explosive silicic volcanism on nutrient cycling ca. 310–300 Ma. Results show that volcanic perturbations result in negligible changes in marine particulate organic carbon export concurrent with sustained increases in pCO2 …

Urbanization In Resource-Based County-Level Cities In China: A Case Study Of New Urbanization In Wuan City, Hebei Province, Jianguang Hou, Danlin Yu, Hao Song, Zhiguo Zhang
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This study investigates the complex dynamics of new-type urbanization in resource-based county-level cities, using Wuan City in Hebei Province, China, as a representative case. As China pursues a high-quality development agenda, cities historically dependent on resource extraction face profound challenges in achieving sustainable and inclusive urban growth. This research employs a multi-method approach—including Theil index analysis, industrial shift-share analysis, a Cobb–Douglas production function model, and a composite urbanization index—to quantitatively diagnose the constraints on Wuan’s development and assess its transformation efforts. Our empirical results reveal a multifaceted situation: while the urban–rural income gap has narrowed, rural income streams remain fragile. …

Studying The Population Dynamics Of Nslab And Their Influence On Spores During Cheese Ripening, Rakesh Kaushik, Sanjeev Anand
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
Cheese ripening involves microbial changes, with starter lactic acid bacteria (SLAB) initiat- ing fermentation and nonstarter lactic acid bacteria (NSLAB) driving flavor and texture development. However, heat-resistant spores of Clostridium and Bacillus can survive pas- teurization and cause spoilage during ripening. This study evaluated NSLAB dynamics in the presence of spores during cheese ripening. Cheddar cheese samples at pilot-scale level (110 L) with four treatments, namely control, with spores of B. licheniformis (T1), with spores of Cl. tyrobutyricum (T2), and both spores (T3) at 2.0 Log10 CFU/mL, were ripened at 7 ◦C for six months. SLAB declined from 8.0 to …
