Producing Synthetic Ct Imagery To Train 3d V-Net Segmentation Models, Thomas Pasfield
Producing Synthetic Ct Imagery To Train 3d V-Net Segmentation Models, Thomas Pasfield
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
We introduce a novel framework for synthesizing industrial CT-like images directly from 3D printer G-code to train a volumetric segmentation model. In this approach, the G-code (FDM toolpath instructions) is converted into a dense 3D volume using a custom anti-aliased line rendering algorithm, yielding synthetic CT images where voxel brightness corresponds to printed material density. To further mimic real CT scanning artifacts and improve the robustness of the dataset, we employ a Radon transform projection-reconstruction technique, creating more realistic synthetic data. Each generated volume is paired with a ground-truth label volume (distinguishing plastics from air), providing a ready-made training dataset …

Recent Advances In Modeling Of Electrical Discharges In Planetary Atmospheres, Seth Gerow, Jared Nelson, Jeremy Riousset, Josef Dufek, Joshua Mendez
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Our work focuses on plasma discharges produced in various planetary atmospheres. This process can create luminescent emissions at low currents and low temperatures: glow and corona discharges. The parallel plate geometry used in Townsend’s theory lets us develop a theoretical formalism, with explicit solutions for the critical voltage effectively reproducing experimental Paschen curves. Here, we present a generalization of the classic parallel plate configurations to concentric spherical and coaxial cylindrical geometries in Earth, Mars, Titan, and Venus atmospheres. We show that glow coronæ form more easily in Mars’s low-pressure, CO2-rich atmosphere than in Earth’s high-pressure, N2-rich atmosphere. Additionally, we present …
Characterizing The Solar Sources Of Periodic Mesoscale Solar Wind Structures That Drive Particle Precipitation In Earth’S Upper Atmosphere, Grace Gratton
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The solar wind is a constant outflow from the Sun that continuously bombards Earth with magnetic fields and electrically charged particles. This outflow poses a threat to satellites near Earth which provide services essential to society, such as GPS and communications. It is well established that geomagnetic disturbances at Earth occur regularly from the background solar wind, outside of times when there is a large-scale solar eruption such as a coronal mass ejection (CME). Thus, it is important to understand what aspects of the background solar wind cause geomagnetic disturbances that adversely impact our space-based assets, and forecast when such …

Evaluation Of A Biologically-Inspired Multi-Agent System Consensus Algorithm To Develop Application Insights, Grace Gratton
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Multi-agent systems are becoming heavily relied upon as the complexity of the world increases. The effectiveness of these systems depends on consensus algorithms; however, the presence of faulted agents can compromise the security and reliability of these consensus algorithms. Therefore, it is crucial to develop robust consensus methods to maintain system security and reliability. Biologically-Inspired Design previously led to the Synchronous Hatching Consensus Algorithm which proved to be robust even with up to 20% of faulted agents reporting false positives. This work aims to provide insights for when the Synchronous Hatching Consensus Algorithm can be applied. This is achieved through …

SHIELD: Semantic Heuristic Intelligence for Ensuring Legitimate Direction
As the automation of robotic systems becomes increasingly prevalent, the risk of malicious hijacking grows in parallel. While robotic systems maintain human oversight for critical operations, they remain vulnerable to communication channel attacks that can compromise mission integrity. Physical components like firmware and sensors offer inherent security through their specialized nature, but the network communication interfaces between robots and operators present significant attack vectors that could lead to mission compromise, physical damage, or asset loss.
This research implements and evaluates a mission assurance framework for ROS2-based autonomous systems. The framework employs a …

Hybrid Hierarchical Swarm Robotics For Planetary Exploration, Eeman Abid
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This project proposes a novel approach to planetary exploration utilizing a hybrid hierarchical swarm robotic system inspired by social insect colonies. The project will develop a centralized 'queen' robot that provides high-level direction to a team of semi-autonomous 'worker' robots, each capable of making local decisions while following the queen's strategic guidance. This structure aims to enhance adaptability and efficiency by balancing centralized coordination with distributed execution. The approach aligns with NASA's CADRE mission, which uses coordinated rovers to map the lunar surface. By combining simulation in ROS2/Gazebo with physical testing on lunar regolith simulant, this research will evaluate how …

Frieze Symmetry Patterns Of Pennsylvania German Fraktur, Lorelei Koss
LASER Journal
Fraktur is an American folk art developed by German-speaking communities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries. This art form features ornate calligraphy combined with illustrations of flowers, birds, angels, and geometric border designs. It was often used for birth and baptismal certificates, religious texts, educational materials, and public notices. Fraktur commonly incorporates frieze pattern designs. Artistic designs based on frieze patterns appear across a wide range of cultures, and research has shown that cultural groups tend to favor certain types of frieze patterns. This paper investigates which types of frieze …

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Many social innovation efforts are aimed at meeting social challenges presented by the aging of the population, yet older adults are often excluded from such efforts. The purpose of this case study was to examine an approach used in a midsized university in southeast North Carolina to create intergenerational opportunities for students, local community organizations, and older adult residents of the surrounding area to collaboratively develop suggestions for addressing challenges facing the older adult population.

First-Year Intersections: Professional Preparation And Civic Engagement Across Four New American Colleges And Universities (Nacu) Campuses, Shereen Ilahi, Chastity Blankenship, Andy Morris, Jeffrey Thomas
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Four institutions hypothesized that civic engagement in first-year courses reinforces career readiness by helping students think critically, communicate effectively, and work well with diversity. We measured teamwork skills, the ability to synthesize and apply different perspectives, and the ability to express, listen to, and adapt ideas based on the perspective of others. We compared self-assessments to direct assessment of student-created artifacts and found a positive correlation that encourages further enquiry.

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Introduction: Suicide in adolescents poses a major public health crisis as the second leading cause of death in youth. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are a principal reason for psychiatric hospitalization among adolescents. Numerous studies across development have identified risk factors (e.g., depression, borderline personality (BPD) features, family history of suicide) associated with STBs, while research in adults largely reports that the affective component of psychopathy, captured by callous-unemotional (CU) traits, is negatively associated with STBs. However, the relationship between CU traits and STB risk among adolescents remains unclear.
Methods: The present study tested associations between self-reported CU …

The State Of The Field On Popular Culture Themed (Pct) Courses: Introducing The Journal Of Thematic Instruction, Kathy R. Doody Ph.D., Pamela Schuetze Ph.D., Jill M. Swirsky Ph.D.
Journal of Thematic Instruction
As universities adapt to meet evolving student needs, popular culture themed (PCT) courses have emerged as an innovative approach that integrates media with academic theory to foster engagement, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary connections. PCTs use popular culture themes that are not directly related to the course content to teach the course content. Despite their growing use across diverse disciplines, from STEM to the humanities, there is a lack of cohesive understanding, consistent terminology, and empirical research on the impacts of PCT courses in higher education.
This paper reviews existing literature on PCT courses organized by discipline, highlighting representative pedagogical strategies, …
An Elementary Approach To The Probability Distribution Of The Product Of Multiple Random Variables, Suwen Tian
An Elementary Approach To The Probability Distribution Of The Product Of Multiple Random Variables, Suwen Tian
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Abstract There arenindependent identically distributed (i.i.d.) uniform random variables defined as ξ1,ξ2,…,ξn, valued in interval [0,k](k>0), and there is a constantmvalued in interval (0,kn). We study the distribution of the product of these random numbers and prove a formula calculating Pr(∏i=1nξi≤m). Interestingly, we find that the result is exactly the sum of the firstnterms in the Taylor series expansion of the function exp(x) with x=nlnk-lnm. Through considering the corresponding probability density function, we make an extension of the formula calculating Pr(∏i=1nξi≤m) to any positive realn, and the extended formula can be written in a …

Alpha-Synuclein Dysregulation In Systemic Pathophysiology Of Synucleinopathies, Hallie H. Dolin, Bowen Zhou, Robert W. Maitta
Faculty Scholarship
Alpha-synuclein (α-syn) has long been identified as the etiologic agent of multiple neurodegenerative diseases, the most common and well-known of which are Parkinson's disease (PD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD). While it is known that the pathophysiology of these synucleinopathies involves aggregation of improperly-folded α-syn, the mechanisms leading to its accumulation have not been fully identified. However, multiple pathways have been proposed, any or all of which may contribute to synucleinopathies. The role of α-syn in normal homeostasis and in other organ systems, especially the hematopoietic system, has been reported recently. Research within the last decade has shown that α-syn …
