Three topics were: admission/discharge criteria (n=2&2), rehabilitation treatment (n=7&5), and aftercare (n=3&2). Modern Challenges To Mandatory Immigration Detention: Building Constitutional Walls Around Statutory Expansions, Timothy Zurcher Jul 2025

Modern Challenges To Mandatory Immigration Detention: Building Constitutional Walls Around Statutory Expansions, Timothy Zurcher

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Pierre Michel arrived in the United States from Haiti at three years old as a Lawful Permanent Resident (“LPR”). After developing substance abuse issues in his adolescence, Michel received several nonviolent criminal convictions and was detained in contemplation of his deportation. Nearly two years later, Michel was finally released after successfully petitioning for Cancellation of Removal. Michel had no opportunity to obtain his freedom sooner, despite his clear eligibility for relief. Like Michel, in 2003, student Sylvester Owino pled guilty to second-degree robbery without understanding the immigration consequences of his conviction. After serving over two years in prison, Owino …

Maritime (Im)Mobility And Heterotopia: Jeju Island In South Korea, Taehee Kim Jul 2025

Maritime (Im)Mobility And Heterotopia: Jeju Island In South Korea, Taehee Kim

Kritika Kultura

Jeju Island, located on the remote periphery of the Korean peninsula and historically a site of exile, has become a popular destination for domestic migration over the past decade. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia as a methodological framework and taking Jeju Island as an example to reveal “islandness,” this paper discusses how the island is imagined and represented in Korean society. From this perspective, Jeju Island is regarded exteriorly as a place outside the ordinary and internally as a heterogeneous place. Further, in the heterotopia of “illusion” and “compensation,” a sojourn on Jeju Island is expected and experienced …

Love Is A Molecular Island, Chun-Mei Chuang Jul 2025

Love Is A Molecular Island, Chun-Mei Chuang

Kritika Kultura

When clarifying Spinoza’s concept of affect, Deleuze declares, “Hope as such or love as such represents nothing, strictly nothing.” In this paper, I approach the question of love by taking a detour of nonhuman affinity. First, I present this paper as an experimental becoming that weaves through heterogeneous lines of thinking and creating. Second, explicating the Deleuzian-Guattarian notion of “abstract machine” alongside Isabelle Stengers’s figure of “inappropriable unknown,” I argue for viewing the cosmos and art as interconnected abstract machines that foster novel realities and communities. Third, I weave planetary thinking with an interdisciplinary approach to propose a “planetary art …

The Legal Regulation Of E-Commerce In Lebanon, Dolly Abouchakra

BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية

In the digital age, the economy and commerce sectors in Lebanon, as well as globally, have embraced advancements, leading to the emergence of e-commerce with its multifaceted models, thereby establishing the electronic commercial entity. These advancements necessitate a profound technological transformation, which, in turn, introduces critical legal challenges. These challenges threaten the stability and growth of such entities within traditional legal frameworks that are insufficiently equipped to address the complexities of the digital environment and the noticeable absence of specialized regulations. This study highlights the inadequacy and disjointed nature of the Lebanese legal framework governing electronic commercial entities. The current …

The Dynamics Of Urbanization And Changes In Ekistics Elements: A Case Study Of Surakarta City, Sarah Astita

Cities and Urban Development Journal

Urbanization has become a driving force behind significant spatial, environmental, and socio-economic transformations in urban areas, including Surakarta, the most densely populated city in Central Java. The rapid increase in population and urban expansion has led to drastic changes in land use and the structure of human settlements. This study aims to analyze the impact of urbanization on the ekistic elements of Surakarta (nature, humans, society, space/shells, and networks) and how these changes manifest spatially over time. A descriptive qualitative approach is employed using literature analysis and the interpretation of Landsat satellite imagery from 2011 and 2022. The findings show …
