The Malditas, The Filipinas, And The Azkals: A Socio-Onomastic Examination Of Nicknames Used For The Philippine Women’S And Men’S National Football Teams, Satwinder Rehal, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

Nicknames in sports can serve a wide range of social and semantic functions. Assigning nicknames to athletes and teams can allow fans to identify with them. Such names can also become symbolic resources that fans and teams turn to when asserting their identity. Nicknames in sports come to convey varied meanings and interpretations understood within a set of contextual properties. This paper fills an empirical gap and investigates nicknames of national sports teams used in Southeast Asia. The investigative focus is on the nicknames of the Philippines men’s and women’s national football teams. Employing Leslie and Skipper’s socio-onomastic framework, this …

Show Me The Money: Approaches To Anti-Money Laundering Compliance For Digital Assets, Mollie Rouan Sep 2025

Show Me The Money: Approaches To Anti-Money Laundering Compliance For Digital Assets, Mollie Rouan

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (“MiCA”) created a harmonized framework to regulate digital asset issuance and services that were not already covered by existing regulations. Notably, MiCA requires virtual asset providers to adhere to the Financial Action Task Force Recommendation 16 (“FATF”), also known as the Travel Rule. Though the Travel Rule has existed for almost 20 years, its application to crypto asset transfers is entirely new. The purpose of the Travel Rule is to detect and prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, but its application to cryptocurrency wallet transactions is criticized for being overly burdensome and invasive …

Who Owns Your Adventure? A Need For Legislative Clarity For Streamed Performances Of Video Games, Harrison Busalacchi Sep 2025

Who Owns Your Adventure? A Need For Legislative Clarity For Streamed Performances Of Video Games, Harrison Busalacchi

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Video games contain copyrighted material that could easily be infringed upon by people streaming a performance of them playing the game. However, the streamers can protect themselves from infringement liability by transforming the content in some form or fashion such that their performance constitutes “fair use” of the copyrighted material. This is often accomplished by the streamer providing commentary while playing the game or adding a small video of themselves in the corner of the stream so that the viewers can see the streamers’ reactions to the content. With artificial intelligence seeing exponential growth in the past couple of years …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

University Of Plymouth, Plymouth, UKPeople living with obesity have a greater chance of developingcomplications during pregnancy and are over-represented inmaternal mortality data relating to both direct and indirect causesduring pregnancy and up to a year after the birth of their child. Inaddition, epigenetic influences result in metabolic changes inoffspring of people living with obesity leading to a greater chanceof them experiencing long-term health consequences. In view ofthese health concerns, people living with obesity are advised to loseweight in the preconception period, before becoming pregnant.Sustained weight loss, however, can be difficult to achieve, andpeople do not always seek preconception advice. Abundance Strategies Should Promote Abundant Jobs In Distressed Places, Timothy J. Bartik Sep 2025

Abundance Strategies Should Promote Abundant Jobs In Distressed Places, Timothy J. Bartik

Upjohn Institute Policy Papers

A prominent recent policy debate is about “abundance policies”: policies to make it easier to build housing or infrastructure, deliver government services more quickly and more efficiently, and expedite the public funding of the most innovative and socially impactful research. In this essay, I argue that abundance advocates often mistakenly ignore or have a negative attitude toward “place-based policies.” These place-based policies would seek to increase employment rates, particularly in good jobs, in two types of distressed places that lack abundant job opportunities: distressed local labor markets and distressed neighborhoods. Both the goals and means of place-based policies fit into …

A Search For Subdwarf B Binaries Using Pulsation Timing From Tess, Tomomi Otani, Andrzej S. Baran, Lindsay C. Spence, Ted A. Von Hippel, Ellesse A. Lynum-Lozano, Julia M. Clark Sep 2025

A Search For Subdwarf B Binaries Using Pulsation Timing From Tess, Tomomi Otani, Andrzej S. Baran, Lindsay C. Spence, Ted A. Von Hippel, Ellesse A. Lynum-Lozano, Julia M. Clark

Publications

Hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars are post-main-sequence stars of high temperature and gravity. Approximately 30% of sdBs exhibit stable pressure and/or gravity-mode pulsations, which can be used via the timing method to test for companion stars and determine their orbital solutions. We used short cadence data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to search for previously undiscovered companions to sdBs. In this paper, we focus on searching for companions with orbital periods shorter than 13.5 days which are detectable within one sector of TESS data (about 27 days). The timing method requires that we derive pulsation frequencies in subsets …

Chp1 Promotes Lipid Droplet Growth And Regulates The Localization Of Key Enzymes For Triacylglycerol Synthesis, Guang Yang, Ximing Du, Dougall Norris, Armella Zadoorian, Yuyuan Zheng, Mingming Gao, Andrew J Brown, Shane T Grey, Chun Zhou, Hongyuan Yang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The glycerol-3-phosphate (G-3-P) pathway is central to the synthesis of triacylglycerols (TAGs) and glycerophospholipids, essential for membrane biogenesis and lipid storage. The first and rate-limiting step in this pathway is catalyzed by glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferases (GPATs), with microsomal GPAT3 and GPAT4 being evolutionarily conserved and predominant in most tissues. While previous studies have implicated Calcineurin B homologous protein 1 (CHP1) as a cofactor for GPAT4, the broader role of CHP1 in regulating microsomal GPATs and TAG biosynthesis remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that CHP1 is a critical regulator of both GPAT3 and GPAT4, essential for their stability, enzymatic activity, and lipid …

Background: Hodgkin lymphoma has excellent survival rates in adolescents and young adults (AYA, diagnosed between ages 15 and 39 years). However, survivors are at risk of treatment-related late effects. Whereas radiotherapy (RT) de-escalation/omission has emerged as an approach to minimize late effects, no prior studies have evaluated RT use over time in AYAs with Hodgkin lymphoma.

Methods: Using the National Cancer Database, we identified 40,717 AYAs diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma between 2004 and 2020. Differences in sociodemographic and clinical variables were assessed using a two-sample two-sided t test or χ2 test. RT use was summarized per year by frequency with …

What Is Worthy Of Inclusion? An Assessment Of The Utility Of Content Selection Strategies At Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zimbabwe, Darlington Mutanda Sep 2025

What Is Worthy Of Inclusion? An Assessment Of The Utility Of Content Selection Strategies At Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zimbabwe, Darlington Mutanda

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

The selection of content for university curricula is of the utmost importance, especially at universities where lecturers have choice in content selection. By contrast, in many jurisdictions, state school systems for primary and secondary schools have syllabi that must be followed to the letter. University teachers/lecturers can choose what to teach, and the selection of content can be based on several factors such as convenience (choosing to teach what one is comfortable with), expertise, research interests, ideology, by accident, or even what one was taught previously despite the dynamic change of knowledge. This means that the student can be impacted …

Jurnal Wacana Politik

Climate change has exerted significant social, economic, and environmental pressures on small-scale coffee farmers, particularly those living near protected forest areas. Declining yields, land limitations, and restrictive conservation policies have created complex tensions related to resource access and survival strategies. This study aims to analyze the political discourses embedded in the dynamics of land rights disputes and climate adaptation strategies of small-scale coffee farmers. Using a qualitative approach and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study explores how farmers negotiate, reject, and reinterpret state environmental regulations through everyday practices and narratives. This study’s findings reveal that coffee farmers’ adaptation strategies are …

This pilot study presents a sensor–actuator setup designed to evaluate tissue deformation in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) during needle insertion. The system integrates three types of low-cost, commercially available force sensors to capture force profiles and identify biomechanical events associated with tissue layer transitions. Controlled insertions were performed on a deceased specimen, and the resulting force data were analyzed to quantify insertion dynamics and estimate tissue deformation. A simulation model based on the recorded force values was developed to calculate stress distribution and deformation, which ranged from 0.001 µm to 8.4 µm and from 0.3 N/m2 to 4.9 N/m2, respectively. …

Data Compression In Additive Manufacturing: Recent Progress And Opportunities, Dongmin Ethan Kang, Wenmeng Tian Sep 2025

Data Compression In Additive Manufacturing: Recent Progress And Opportunities, Dongmin Ethan Kang, Wenmeng Tian

Publications

A crucial aspect of quality control for Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes is the acquisition of diverse data from the entire lifecycle of the product. AM data has grown significantly in terms of diversity and volumes, resulting in diverse data formats of increasing volumes, including time series, images, and point clouds. Large quantities of these data are essential for effective in-situ process monitoring and ex-situ non-destructive evaluation. However, this will result in large manufacturing and inspection datasets that are difficult to manage for users, which will delay the broader adoption of AM for mission critical applications. This motivates the urgent need …

Fun! Friends! Famous People! Why Fans Attend Anime Conventions, Billy Tringali, Maria Alberto, Jeremiah Martinez Sep 2025

Fun! Friends! Famous People! Why Fans Attend Anime Conventions, Billy Tringali, Maria Alberto, Jeremiah Martinez

Proceedings from the Document Academy

In 2021 during the global Covid-19 lockdowns, Billy and Maria ran an IRB-exempted online survey, looking to hear from fans who attend anime conventions. Conventions had been shut down as non-essential services that drew large crowds, and we hoped to capture a screenshot of this moment, to better learn from it in the future. And the resulting data collection went quite well – we were able to partner with a major anime organization to share the survey, and our 1000+ respondents had a lot to say about the conventions they were missing during lockdowns.

Ultimately, we found a significant emphasis …
