Queering The Classrooms: Filipino Teachers’ Perspectives And Practices Of Queer Pedagogy, Holden Kenneth G. Alcazaren, Jonalou S. Labor
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
With the increasing progress of queer perspectives in the academic setting, there have been calls for LGBTQ+-inclusive teaching practices. In the Philippines, attempts have been implemented to produce curricula and materials that are more gender-responsive and gender-sensitive. However, these initiatives are without their barriers as conservative traditions and sexist ideologies still affect the eradication of gender-based discrimination in the classrooms. To fully grasp these issues, the present study aimed to elicit insights from queer Filipino teachers about their views and perspectives on using queer pedagogy in their classrooms. With these pedagogical choices, the study tried to understand the queering process …

The Lived Experiences Of Mothers Facing Phubbing From Their Adolescent Children, Mye Alexis
The Lived Experiences Of Mothers Facing Phubbing From Their Adolescent Children, Mye Alexis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Widespread use of technology, particularly smartphones, introduced new challenges involving parent–adolescent attachment. Although existing literature primarily examines parental phubbing of adolescents, there is a significant gap in research exploring the experiences of mothers who are phubbed by their adolescent children. To address this gap, the central research question guiding this study was: What are the lived experiences of mothers who have been phubbed by their adolescent (ages 14-18) children? Grounded in Bowlby’s attachment theory, this phenomenological qualitative study aimed to deepen understanding of the emotional impacts of phubbing on mothers’ emotional wellbeing, emotional bonding, and mother–adolescent attachment. A homogeneous convenience …

We draw upon the first author’s dissertation, providing clear, actionable guidance for simplifying the analysis process. The discussion highlights the value of collaborative reflection in making the methodology more accessible and enriching understanding …
Ethnographic Dilemmas And Reflexive Thoughts Of A Contemplative Jewish Anthropologist, Elazar Ben-Lulu Dr.
Ethnographic Dilemmas And Reflexive Thoughts Of A Contemplative Jewish Anthropologist, Elazar Ben-Lulu Dr.
The Qualitative Report
During ethnographic fieldwork, anthropologists of religion grapple with various dilemmas regarding their participation in the rituals they study. How do they make real-time decisions between full participation and observational distance? Do they manage to participate harmoniously in religious activities even during moments of doubt or questioning of their own faith? Based on my three-year fieldwork in Israeli Reform Jewish congregations, which included observations and in-depth interviews, I demonstrate how my reflexive experience which exposes my internal Jewish dialogue, shaped my patterns of participation and motivation in engaging with various rituals. This autoethnographic description illustrates that my deliberate abstention or avoidance …

Background: The clinical utility of diagnostic neuroimaging for pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) for psychosis remains unclear. We sought to estimate the prevalence of and characteristics associated with clinically significant neuroimaging findings among pediatric patients presenting to the ED with symptoms of psychosis who had neuroimaging performed.
Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included visits by patients 5 to < 18 years old presenting with symptoms of psychosis to 28 EDs affiliated with the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee from 2016 to 2019 and had neuroimaging performed. We estimated the rate of clinically significant neuroimaging findings, defined as those resulting in further testing, treatment, or medical admission, overall and by imaging modality. Multivariable logistic regression models examined presenting features associated with clinically significant findings.
Results: Clinically significant neuroimaging findings were identified in 5.4% (95% CI 4.2%, 6.9%) of 1118 ED visits (54% male, median [IQR] 14 [11-16] years old). Clinically significant findings occurred in 4.9% (34/699) of head computed tomography scans and 7.5% …

Covalent inhibitors are an emerging class of therapeutics, but methods to comprehensively profile their binding kinetics and selectivity across the proteome have been limited. Here we introduce COOKIE-Pro (COvalent Occupancy KInetic Enrichment via Proteomics), an unbiased method for quantifying irreversible covalent inhibitor binding kinetics on a proteome-wide scale. COOKIE-Pro uses a two-step incubation process with mass spectrometry-based proteomics to determine kinact and KI values for covalent inhibitors against both on-target and off-target proteins. We validated COOKIE-Pro using BTK inhibitors spebrutinib and ibrutinib, accurately reproducing known kinetic parameters and identifying both expected and unreported off-targets. The method revealed that …

A Way Through Pandemic: Daoist Insights During The Covid-19 Crisis, Marck Zaldy Camba
Mabini Review
The COVID-19 crisis has made most Filipinos reconsider, rethink, and reprioritize various aspects of their lives. While they are well-known for their resiliency, they are not immune to experiencing fear, anxiety, uncertainties, and other disruptions, as these are inevitable experiences during crises, particularly pandemics. While the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a public health crisis, there is a fear that it also provoked an existential one. This paper explores the philosophical insights of Daoism and its practicality and relevance to navigating such crises. In what ways can Daoist insights guide us regarding the right way(s) to manage ourselves during the crisis? How …

This paper is an attempt to analyze 8 poems in Filipino written by a prominent woman of Philippine letters, Rustica C. Carpio. Her disposition as a promising poet had never been the subject of local literary scholarship. As a poet, Carpio can be situated within the tradition of humanist poetry with her poems published in her book “Tilamsik ng Panitik” efficaciously chronicling the complex nature of man. The analysis situated the poems of Carpio within certain prominent traditions in Philippine poetry. In the form and content of her poetry, it is evident that we can see the strong influences of …
Traslación: From Mythos To Kairos, Johanne Randolf Andrada, Dominic Bautista Gonzales
Traslación: From Mythos To Kairos, Johanne Randolf Andrada, Dominic Bautista Gonzales
Mabini Review
The pre-colonial Philippines was a vibrant archipelago filled with diverse faiths, ethnicities, and cultures, reflecting a rich blend of indigenous beliefs and practices. When Spanish colonization arrived, it dramatically transformed the religious landscape, introducing Christianity. Yet, remnants of pre-colonial spiritual traditions persisted, often merging with Catholic practices to create a distinct form of faith. This paper aims to explore the Traslación through various scholars. The focal point of this exploration is the Traslación, an annual event held every January 9 at Quiapo Church, which highlights the deep devotion many Filipinos have for the Black Nazarene. By drawing on both Western …
Placing The Good Life: Towards A Phenomenology Of Place, Chloe Nicole Piamonte
Placing The Good Life: Towards A Phenomenology Of Place, Chloe Nicole Piamonte
Mabini Review
This paper stresses the place of a phenomenology of place in philosophical discussions on the constituents of what various philosophers designate as the good life. A phenomenological approach to place aids in addressing the taken-for-grantedness of our lifeworld and its implications—including but not limited to—questions on embodiment, freedom, and intersubjectivity. Phenomenology reveals the layers of meaning behind the varying dimensions of human experience that constitute their lived emplacement. In turn, a phenomenology of place examines the onset of a conscious and subjective interpretation of places, and things and concepts surrounding them. Making sense of the importance of place and locality …

Some New Three-Term Conjugate Gradient Methods For Riemannian Optimization With Application To The Gough-Stewart Platform, Nasiru Salihu, Poom Kumam, Lin Wang, Sani Salisu
Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications
Three-term conjugate gradient (TTCG) methods have been extensively studied for optimization within Euclidean geometry, with some inherently satisfying the sufficient descent property, thus enhancing their theoretical superiority. However, other TTCG methods have been developed that incorporate restarting the search direction, simplify the steepest descent approach, or rely on the convexity assumptions of f to establish their convergence results. This paper introduces the Riemannian three-term conjugate gradient (RTTCG) methods. The search direction in these RTTCG methods consistently satisfies the sufficient descent condition, regardless of the line search employed, and does so without requiring a restart mechanism. By utilizing retraction and vector …
