A Modified Fama-Macbeth Model Based On The Single-Index Model, Mariam Jumaah Mousa, Munaf Yousif Hmood
A Modified Fama-Macbeth Model Based On The Single-Index Model, Mariam Jumaah Mousa, Munaf Yousif Hmood
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
The aim of this essay is to use a single-index model in developing and adjusting Fama-MacBeth. Penalized smoothing spline regression technique (SIMPLS) foresaw this adjustment. Two generalized cross-validation techniques, Generalized Cross Validation Grid (GGCV) and Generalized Cross Validation Fast (FGCV), anticipated the regular value of smoothing covered under this technique. Due to the two-steps nature of the Fama-MacBeth model, this estimation generated four estimates: SIMPLS(FGCV) - SIMPLS(FGCV), SIMPLS(FGCV) - SIM PLS(GGCV), SIMPLS(GGCV) - SIMPLS(FGCV), SIM PLS(GGCV) - SIM PLS(GGCV). Three-factor Fama-French model—market risk premium, size factor, value factor, and their implication for excess stock returns and portfolio returns—were estimated on …

Sulforaphane And Non-Clustered Tumor/Non-Tumor Suppressor Micrornas Regulate Akt And Its Downstream Genes In Mda-Mb-231 Cancer Cells, Omobolanle David Garuba
Dissertations (2016-Present)
Cancer is a complex pathological condition characterized mainly by uncontrolled rapid cell divisions caused by several factors, which include genetics and environmental factors. Of all cancer types, breast cancer (BC) remains the second most diagnosed among women worldwide; thus, BC burden has become a global health issue. Of all known breast cancer subtypes, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the only primary subtype without effective therapy as a result of their lack of the essential estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) common to other BCs and are the usual therapeutic targets for treatment. …

Mitochondrial Haplogroups, But Not Heteroplasmy, Are Associated With Midlife Cognitive Function, Kristine Yaffe
Mitochondrial Haplogroups, But Not Heteroplasmy, Are Associated With Midlife Cognitive Function, Kristine Yaffe
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Introduction: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation may influence cognitive performance, but prior findings are inconsistent.
Methods: We analyzed data from 2308 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, assessing heteroplasmy (mtHz) burden and haplogroups (mtHg) from blood-derived mtDNA at three timepoints and cognitive function across multiple domains. Multivariate linear regression models and multivariate linear mixed models adjusted for age, sex, education, and race.
Results: MtDNA heteroplasmy burden and count were not associated with cognitive performance. However, mtHgs in macro-mtHg L were linked to poorer cognitive outcomes, particularly in processing speed and global cognition in cross-sectional and …
Peritoneal Immunosurgery: Immunotherapy Augmented Surgery For The Treatment Of Peritoneal Cancers, Malcolm K Brenner, Alastair M Thompson
Peritoneal Immunosurgery: Immunotherapy Augmented Surgery For The Treatment Of Peritoneal Cancers, Malcolm K Brenner, Alastair M Thompson
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Peritoneal malignancy often indicates disruptions in multiple physiological systems resulting from widespread cancer. The heterogenous origin and dynamic nature of peritoneal cancer make it difficult to treat with standard approaches that fit into guidelines. We describe how successful treatment should address the underlying pathology, the systemic response to surgical treatments and target the immune perturbations that facilitate the establishment and propagation of this multifaceted disease.
Using Latent Patient-Centered Fear Extinction Profiles To Guide Treatment In Pediatric Ocd, Brent J Small, Sabine Wilhelm, Joseph F Mcguire
Using Latent Patient-Centered Fear Extinction Profiles To Guide Treatment In Pediatric Ocd, Brent J Small, Sabine Wilhelm, Joseph F Mcguire
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Background: While exposure with response prevention (ERP) is the frontline treatment for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), not all patients benefit. Impairments in extinction learning are implicated in pediatric OCD's etiology and treatment, with impaired pre-treatment extinction learning associated with worse ERP outcomes. However, available methods for assessing patients' difficulties with fear extinction are costly and underdeveloped. In response, we used person-centered profiles to characterize latent fear extinction patterns among youth with OCD, and investigated the degree to which scores on common rating scales correspond to profile membership.
Methods: Youth with OCD (n=98) completed a diagnostic clinical battery followed by a …

Lactate-derived N-lactoyl-phenylalanine (Lac-Phe) was recently identified as an lactate-derived circulating metabolite that reduces feeding and obesity, but mechanisms that underlie the metabolic benefits of Lac-Phe remain unknown. Here we demonstrated that Lac-Phe directly inhibits hypothalamic neurons that express Agouti-related protein (AgRP), resulting in an indirect activation of anorexigenic neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH). We also found that both AgRP inhibition and PVH activation are required to mediate Lac-Phe-induced hypophagia. Further, we show that Lac-Phe inhibits AgRP neurons via activating the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel, and inhibition of the KATP channel blunts effects of Lac-Phe to suppress …

Disialoganglioside-GD2 is a key molecular target for Neuroblastoma (NB) immunotherapy based on the employment of GD2-targeting antibodies. However, about 50% of treated patients can experience tumor relapse due to limited immune-mediated cytotoxicity and poor antibody penetration into tumors. To address this problem, a tumor-penetrating photo-oncolytic phage nanovector platform is genetically and chemically developed that selectively targets GD2-expressing NB cells. The phage bioconjugates, functionalized with different photosensitizers, result in specific and selective oncolysis of GD2-positive NB cells upon light irradiation, without affecting GD2-negative ones. The photo-oncolytic phage vectors are shown to deeply penetrate into GD2-positive tumor spheroids in vitro, and to …

Anxiety disorders are common in children and cause significant impairment. Family accommodation, which refers to behavioral changes that family members make to temporarily alleviate a child’s anxiety, has been linked to child anxiety symptom severity. Although emotional vulnerabilities for anxiety such as emotion dysregulation, anxiety sensitivity, and distress intolerance have been associated with family accommodation, research concerning the relationship between these constructs among anxious youth is limited. We hypothesized that these variables would be uniquely and positively associated with family accommodation and would moderate the relationship between anxiety symptom severity and family accommodation. Treatment-seeking child–parent dyads (N = 90; …

Traumatic Brain Injury In Pregnancy: A Single Level I Trauma Center Experience, Spyridoula Tsetsou
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is less common in pregnancy than in the general population; however, it poses significant challenges in diagnosis and management. These include the potential teratogenicity of medications, radiation exposure from imaging modalities, physiological changes associated with pregnancy, and obstetric complications that may arise. Although there are general guidelines for trauma in the obstetric patient, they are not specific to TBI, and most recommendations are based on low-level evidence or institutional experiences.
We conducted a retrospective review of the hospital trauma registry over a 10-year period. We included all the patients admitted to our neurosurgical intensive care unit …

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a psychoactive botanical native to Southeast Asia increasingly used in the U.S. for various self-reported benefits, including sleep improvement. However, empirical evidence concerning kratom’s effects on sleep is limited. Here, we examined the association between bedtime kratom use and self-reported sleep outcomes in naturalistic settings across consecutive days, while also exploring sex and chronic pain status as potential moderators. A secondary analysis was conducted using the data from a 15-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study of 357 U.S. adults who reported regularly using kratom. Participants made daily reports of their bedtime kratom use and …

With recent advances in prenatal interventions and infant-specific KRT, survival of neonates with ESKD has improved over the past decade. Little is known, however, about the impact on the health care system of improved survival in this population. Our primary aim …

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is increasingly recognized in people with HIV (PWH), with both HIV and antiretroviral therapy contributing to liver damage and glucose intolerance. However, the role of viral proteins derived from reservoirs in this process remains unclear.
Methods: Adeno-associated virus (AAV) constructs encoding a control protein or HIV-1 viral protein R (Vpr) driven by the thyroxine-binding globulin promoter were administered to male mice (n = 5 per group) fed regular chow or a high-fat diet (HFD). Young adult mice underwent intraperitoneal glucose tolerance testing and magnetic resonance imaging, followed by euthanasia. Liver and adipose tissues …

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Previous investigations of whole thalamus and thalamic nuclei volumes in posttrauma psychopathology have been sparse and limited in scope and have yielded inconsistent results. To address this, volumetric estimates of whole thalamus and thalamic nuclei were obtained from structural brain magnetic resonance imaging scans from 2058 participants across 20 worldwide sites in the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) working group.
Methods
Thalamic volumes were compared in trauma-exposed participants with PTSD (n = 238), major depressive disorder (MDD) (n = 184), and comorbid PTSD+MDD (n = 618) and in trauma-exposed …

Background
Systemic low-grade inflammation, which is characterized by increased counts of blood leukocytes (white blood cells, WBCs), can lead to hypertension, while reduced WBC counts caused by the use of some substances, e.g., alcohol, can also lead to hypertension. However, there have been no studies on the association between WBC counts and the risk of hypertension in young adults.
Methods
This cohort study conducted in Taiwan included a total of 2351 military personnel who were aged 18–39 years, were free of baseline hypertension and were followed up for incident hypertension from 2014 to the end of 2020. Resting blood pressure …

INTRODUCTION: Nearly 50% of Americans have at least one chronic illness. Preparing future healthcare providers for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) and person-centred care through community-based interprofessional education (IPE) can improve outcomes for this growing population. Partial programme theories predict that patients' participation as teachers in health professions education contributes to students' development of patient-centredness. Role theory asserts that behaviours are shaped by assigned roles; therefore, community members with chronic illness who assume roles of health mentors in an IPE curriculum are predicted to teach students about their patient experiences. Yet, this teaching outcome and the lessons health mentors teach in …
