‘Team Kazoku’: Fostering Mutual-Care Relationships Among Citizens Through Non-Parent Participation In Childcare, Kyosuke Sakakura, Yuki Kawamura, Rie Tanaka, Ayumi Arakawa, Rika Ishitsuka

ServDes Conference Series

Japan’s low birth rate gives rise to a need for mutual care among citizens to support child-rearing in society. If there is a need for public relationships to repair and sustain society for sustainable livelihoods, what can design contribute to this? This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the factors that promote and inhibit mutual-care relationships among Japanese citizens. To this end, we adopted an action research approach in which non-child-rearing people became involved with families raising children—a group we called ‘Team KAZOKU (family)’. Through a year-long study of Team KAZOKU, we found that mutual-care relationships among citizens were inhibited by …

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) exerts substantial control on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the Southern Ocean, playing a key role in modulating the global carbon cycle and climate. However, the orbital-scale forcing and future changes in the strength and position of the ACC remain elusive. Here, we reconstruct the history of ACC extending back to the Last Interglacial (LIG; 128-113 ka) using sediment cores from the Scotia Sea. Based on high-resolution measurements of sortable silt mean grain size, we find that bottom current speed is synchronized with eccentricity, superimposed by precession. During the LIG when both eccentricity …

Justice In A Sacrifice Zone; Early Land Use Battles And Environmental Injustice In Salt Lake City's Westside, Shiv Pandya

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

“Are we so buried under railroads and coal yards that we have no further rights?” — A Westside Resident, 1918 In 1918, residents of Salt Lake City’s Westside,” home to much of the city’s low-income, immigrant, and minority populations, protested the poten- tial codification of their community into an industrial zone where unchecked development would threaten their health and wellbeing.® Their “smoldering indignation . . . burst into flame” as they sought to make their voices heard, distributing a thousand leaflets to fellow Westsiders that called for a mass gathering in front of the city’s zoning committee.* Their efforts, while …

I Am A Person Too: The State's Failure To Secure Transgender Rights And Personhood, Trevor L.M. Reynolds

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The winds of change appeared to blow on June 15, 2020, when the Su- preme Court decided Bostock v. Clayton County. The Bostock decision—in which the Court held that discrimination based upon an employee’s gender identity violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act—has been heralded as a revolutionary triumph for the LGBTQ+ community. And yet, while the Bos- tock decision dictated that employers cannot terminate people based on their gender identity, it failed in the most important regard: establishing gender identity as a protected constitutional class. The Court, however, is not unique in its failure to secure transgender rights; …

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

TFEB, a master regulator of autophagy and lysosomal biogenesis, is activated by several cellular stresses including lysosomal damage, but its underlying mechanism is unclear. TFEB activation during lysosomal damage depends on the ATG conjugation system, which mediates lipidation of ATG8 proteins. Here, we newly identify ATG conjugation-independent TFEB regulation that precedes ATG conjugation-dependent regulation, designated Modes I and II, respectively. We reveal unique regulators of TFEB in each mode: APEX1 in Mode I and CCT7 and/or TRIP6 in Mode II. APEX1 interacts with TFEB independently of the ATG conjugation system, and is required for TFEB stability, while both CCT7 and …

Climate Change: The World In Uncharted Waters – Exploring The Nexus Of Human-Rights Based Legal Instruments And Climate Change, Emma V. Wilson Oct 2025

Climate Change: The World In Uncharted Waters – Exploring The Nexus Of Human-Rights Based Legal Instruments And Climate Change, Emma V. Wilson

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The framework of human rights is based on a “fundamental and irrevoca- ble belief in the dignity and worth of every individual.”! While many differ- ent channels have emerged for protecting human rights in the face of global climate change, there is still significant room for improvement. For decades, there was no formal recognition of human-centered environmental rights.? The recent United Nations General Assembly (“UNGA”) acknowledgement of a right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is a tool that can “facilitate the reconceptualization of human rights law to better adapt to the negative impacts of climate change.” It represents …

Investigating Factors Influencing Organic Chemistry Learners' Explanation Sophistication And Representational Competence, Caroline J. Crowder Oct 2025

Investigating Factors Influencing Organic Chemistry Learners' Explanation Sophistication And Representational Competence, Caroline J. Crowder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The research presented in this dissertation has two themes: organic chemistry learners’ written explanations and representational competence. Chapters 3 and 4 explore how organic chemistry learners construct explanations of reaction mechanisms, specifically focusing on electrophile and nucleophile components. Chapter 5 investigates organic chemistry learners’ representational competence skills and the relationship between these skills and their performance in the course.

Understanding reaction mechanisms is critical for success in organic chemistry, yet learners often struggle to reason beyond explicit, surface-level features. Constructed-response prompts that ask learners to explain what is happening in a reaction mechanism and why it occurs can provide insight …

While there have been studies on obesity levels and physical activity levels across many populations and age groups, few studies have focused on Alaska Native Elders. The purpose of this study was to examine rurality (urban vs. rural counties), physical activity, and obesity level while controlling for sex, self-reported loneliness, and self-reported stress. The theoretical foundation for this study was based on the socio-ecological model (SEM), and the research questions in this study explored how rurality impacted obesity levels and how rurality impacted physical activity levels in Alaska Native Elders. The methodology of this study was a quantitative cross-sectional design …

Improving Icu Nurses’ Knowledge Of Early Mobility Through An Educational Intervention, Mohini Chand Oct 2025

Improving Icu Nurses’ Knowledge Of Early Mobility Through An Educational Intervention, Mohini Chand

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This doctoral project sought to close a critical knowledge gap in the implementation of early mobility (EM) practices among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Guided by the ADDIE instructional design model, the initiative centered on developing and delivering a six-week educational intervention aimed at enhancing nurses’ comprehension and application of EM strategies for critically ill patients. Despite robust evidence supporting EM’s role in mitigating ICU-acquired weakness, reducing delirium, and improving functional outcomes, its clinical adoption remained inconsistent prior to this intervention. The project was anchored by the practice-focused question: “To what extent does an educational intervention improve ICU nurses’ knowledge …

Exploring The Correlation Between Pupil Distance And Myopia Prevalence: An Observational Bioanthropology Study In Surabaya, Anggitha Hayuning Kinasih, Dwi Martha Nur Aditya, Y Adhimas Setyo Wicaksono

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Bioanthropology integrates biological and cultural perspectives, thereby enhancing our understanding of human health across populations. Myopia is a significant refractive error affecting potentially 2.5 billion people globally by the end of the decade. Bioanthropological theories suggest that pupil diameter and distance contribute to axial elongation and the progression of myopia. Nevertheless, current literature lacks empirical validation through rigorous hypothesis testing, highlighting a gap in comprehension. The research explores the relationship between pupil distance and the incidence of myopia via empirical assessments in Surabaya. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted, which involved pupil distance measurements and eye refraction assessments. Inclusion criteria …
