Designing Invisibility: How Hostile Architecture Impacts People Living With Disabilities, Priscilla A. Okolie
Designing Invisibility: How Hostile Architecture Impacts People Living With Disabilities, Priscilla A. Okolie
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
This comment discusses the potentially unethical and unlawful nature of hostile architecture. This comment posits that hostile architecture is inherently illegal by way of implicitly and overtly violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. This comment argues that hostile architecture violates the ADA because it potentially discriminates against people living with disabilities by hindering their ability to utilize both public and private facilities such as bus stops. This comment acknowledges that while hostile architecture is often used as a tool to discourage unhoused people from using such facilities, hostile architecture also potentially discriminates against people living with disabilities. This comment highlights …

The History Behind The Enactment Of Public Law 115-126 And Whether Safesport Has Created A Safe Place For Competitive Athletes, Ashtyn L. Stevens
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The Summer Olympic Games unite the world in celebrating athletic excellence, yet behind the global spectacle lies a troubling reality: the pervasive issue of sexual abuse within competitive sports. The high-profile case of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who sexually assaulted hundreds of athletes over decades, including Olympic champions Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas, exposed systemic failures in reporting and accountability. This comment analyzes the legal and institutional response to such abuse, focusing on the enactment of Public Law 115-126 in 2018. Designed to protect minors and amateur athletes, the law mandates timely reporting of sexual abuse to law …

In this paper we have assessed the ability of the domain-based local pair natural orbital (DLPNO)-CCSD(T) method to match the explicitly correlated CCSD(T) relative energies of (H2O)n=3–7isomers along with the impact of the level of theory utilized to optimize the water cluster geometries. The benchmark structures were optimized using a 2-body:Many-body procedure in which all of the 1- and 2-body contributions are computed using CCSD(T) while all of the higher-order many-body interactions are computed using MP2 (denoted CCSD(T):MP2). Benchmark relative energies were computed for these CCSD(T):MP2 optimized geometries with explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-F12b single point energies (SPEs) using the …

Purpose: Retrospective chart reviews in ophthalmology are essential for gaining clinical insights, but they remain labor-intensive and prone to error. Despite digitization through electronic health records, extracting and interpreting lengthy, unstructured patient histories remains challenging, particularly in ophthalmology, which relies heavily on both imaging and text-based reports. We introduce OphthoACR, a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool for automated chart review and cohort analyses in ophthalmology. Methods: OphthoACR was applied to extract 16 variables of increasing task difficulty from the complete chart histories of 91 patients who underwent secondary intraocular lens surgery at the Columbia University …

This paper challenges long-standing assumptions about tradeo↵s between duplexing and microphone fidelity in consumer wireless audio systems. Through controlled experiments and comparative evaluations on modern consumer hardware, we demonstrate that (1) measurable improvements in recorded microphone fidelity are achievable in real-world scenarios previously considered infeasible, (2) objective metrics show statistically significant gains under the tested configurations, and (3) these gains enable practical workflows for field production and archival capture. For reasons of responsible disclosure and ongoing intellectual property protection, implementation details are withheld; instead we report experimental design at a high level, evaluation methodology, numeric results, and implications for practitioners …

Climate change and the global energy crisis have led to an increasing need for greenhouse gas remediation and clean energy sources. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising solution for both issues as it harvests waste CO2 and chemically reduces it to more useful forms. However, the high overpotential required for the reaction makes it electrochemically unfavorable. Here, we fabricate a novel electrode composed of TiO2 nanoparticles grown in situ on MXene charge acceptor 2D sheets with excellent CO2RR characteristics. A straightforward solvothermal method was used to grow the nanoparticles on …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nonprofit organizations led by African American women face persistent challenges in achieving operational success and financial sustainability. When nonprofit leaders fail to implement effective strategies to engage and motivate diverse donors to make significant charitable donations, they could limit their organization’s capacity to fulfill its mission, which in turn affects the community. The purpose of this qualitative single-case study was to explore the strategies that some African American women leaders used to increase donor engagement and improve fundraising effectiveness. The study was grounded in the conceptual frameworks of the Baldrige Excellence Framework, McKinsey 7-S, and servant leadership theories. Data were …
School Leaders’ Perceptions Of Post-Covid-19 Recruiting And Retention Of Special Education Teachers In A Local School District, Framy Diaz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School leaders in a local school district continue to struggle keeping their special education (SPED) positions appropriately staffed. The problem was that the inability to fill these large numbers of vacancies could adversely affect the quality of services SPED students receive and impact school personnel's ability to meet legal IEP compliance requirements. Guided by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Herzberg’s two-way factor theories, the purpose of this qualitative study was to gain the perspectives of school and district leaders regarding difficulties in post-COVID-19 recruiting and retention of SPED teachers. A basic qualitative design was used to capture the insights of …

Effluents from the textile industry, particularly those containing synthetic azo dyes, poses a significant environmental threat, necessitating the development of more effective and sustainable pollutant removal methods. Traditional dye removal techniques often fall short in efficiency and environmental impact, prompting the exploration of enzymatic degradation as a promising alternative. This study focuses on chloroperoxidase, a natural biocatalyst recognized for its ability to oxidize synthetic dyes into less harmful products. By exploring the mechanistic distinction between chlorination and oxidative processes, we investigate the enzyme’s specific degradation pathways for azo dyes and the resulting by-products. Utilizing analytical techniques, including liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry …

Cosmopolitan Spirits: Islam And The Experimental Cosmologies Of Egypt's Spiritualist Movement, 1947–1960, Arthur Shiwa Zárate
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This article considers the history of Egypt’s mid-twentieth-century Spiritualist movement through an examination of its periodical, a monthly Arabic magazine called Alam al-Ruh (The World of the Spirit) (1947–1960). As it shows, Egyptian Spiritualists defended and promoted their project by crafting an experimental cosmology, one that blended claims about empirical verification with elements of Islamic and Spiritualist cosmologies. It further shows how this combination of scientism and cosmology reflects a core dynamic within the history of scientific exploration in the Islamic world. Like spiritual seekers and occult practitioners in Muslim societies elsewhere, Egyptian Spiritualists positioned their project as one of …

Coastal Water Information Orders: Reverse-Engineering New York City’S Data Dashboards, James A. Hodges, Rachel Paprocki
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This article examines the information systems governing individual relationships to urban coastal waterways, drawing from two data publication initiatives in New York City. In these two cases, data structure and web design features cultivate specific forms of knowledge about water quality, pollution, and the health risks represented by recreational activities such as swimming and fishing. Analysis of the data structure and web source code shows the forms of knowledge concerning water quality each project facilitates or obscures. Findings are considered within the framework of an ‘information order’, which refers to the prevailing conditions for knowledge that are facilitated by communication …

Purpose: Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are common correlates of mental health problems in adolescence. However, research has yet to investigate whether IPV victimization is related to developmental changes in mental health, as well as the contributing role that TBI may play in conditioning this association. We address this gap by analyzing longitudinal data with well-validated measures of mental health from an ethnically diverse sample of adolescents.
Methods: Prospective data from the Dating it Safe sample (n = 699) were used to measure IPV victimization, depression, post-traumatic stress, binge drinking, and TBI from 2015 to …

The molecular-level organization of 1H-1,2,3-triazole in the liquid state is described as an extended hydrogen-bonded network, reminiscent of linear solution-phase polymer chains. Raman, IR, and no-D NMR spectroscopic data interpreted using density functional theory (DFT) computations reveal no evidence of the lower-energy 2H- tautomer or isolated 1H- monomers. Spectroscopic and computational results are consistent with an extended network of strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds throughout the pure liquid and explain earlier X-ray and solution-phase studies. Our computations indicate that the Gibbs free energy of ring-like structures for the most part increases with the number of fragments whereas it decreases for extended …

Large language models (LLMs) can potentially help with verification using proof assistants by automating proofs. However, it is unclear how effective LLMs are in this task. In this paper, we perform a case study based on two mature Rocq projects: the hs-to-coq tool and Verdi. We evaluate the effectiveness of LLMs in generating proofs by both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Our study finds that: (1) external dependencies and context in the same source file can significantly help proof generation; (2) LLMs perform great on small proofs but can also generate large proofs; (3) LLMs perform differently on different verification projects; …
