“Starlight Suite”: A Compositional Exploration Of The Argo Navis Constellations In Three Movements, Adam Miller Dec 2025

“Starlight Suite”: A Compositional Exploration Of The Argo Navis Constellations In Three Movements, Adam Miller

Student Publications

This thesis explores a compositional technique in which stellar constellations are arranged upon musical staves in a variety of iterations to create a basis from which to draw melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material. These raw extrapolations of unaltered notes are then arranged and orchestrated into thematic music for full orchestra, centered around elements from the mythological background behind the constellations used. An accompanying analysis explains the specific applications of this technique within each movement of the work, the significance of each, and the variety of ways in which musical inspiration was drawn from the raw materials. The objective of this …

Dielectric Properties Of Surface-Doped Partially Stabilised Zirconia With Ceramic Nanomaterials, Lara Al-Hakeem, Shihab Zaidan, Wafaa Khalef Dec 2025

Dielectric Properties Of Surface-Doped Partially Stabilised Zirconia With Ceramic Nanomaterials, Lara Al-Hakeem, Shihab Zaidan, Wafaa Khalef

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

The microstructural and dielectric properties of Yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) were studied before and after sintering with BaTiO3 and WO3 doping. After sintering, FE-SEM analysis revealed increased grain coalescence and growth, with BaTiO3 causing 300 nm grain expansion and WO3 promoting uniform grain distribution without significant grain size increase (~200 nm). These microstructural changes dramatically altered dielectric behavior. All sintered samples had higher dielectric constants than pre-sintered ones between 100–1000 kHz due to reduced porosity and enhanced homogeneity. Dielectric constant was highest in BaTiO3-doped Y-PSZ at lower frequencies, while WO-doped showed superior frequency stability and lower dielectric loss across the …

Impacts Of Nutrient Addition And Disturbance On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities And Trophic Interactions, Kayla Beitzel Dec 2025

Impacts Of Nutrient Addition And Disturbance On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities And Trophic Interactions, Kayla Beitzel

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

Coastal dune ecosystems face ongoing threats from human-mediated disturbance and altered resource availability. Because these dunes provide critical habitat for many organisms, including shorebirds, beach mice, and arthropods, changes in disturbance regimes or resource availability can impact plant communities and higher trophic levels by altering plant richness and productivity, which in turn influence arthropod abundance and diversity. To examine how disturbance and nutrient addition affect arthropod communities, we established twenty 5×5 m plots on Dauphin Island, crossing mechanical disturbance with a 10 g m⁻² addition of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, replicated across five experimental blocks. Arthropods were sampled using three …

Urban forests are crucial to the livability and resilience of cities, offering critical ecosystem benefits such as air quality enhancement, temperature regulation, and biodiversity. Managing said urban forests is essential to ensure their sustainability and adaptability to rapidly changing environmental and climate conditions. The Rapid Urban Forest Assessment (RUFA) tool was developed to address the need for a standardized approach to evaluating and comparing urban and community forestry programs. By analyzing and aggregating tree-specific data across California, such as canopy cover, tree counts, and diversity scores, RUFA assigns a comprehensive urban forestry score for each city. This score allows for …

An Analysis Of Neuroidal Memory Formation Within D. Melanogaster, Jerry Chang Dec 2025

An Analysis Of Neuroidal Memory Formation Within D. Melanogaster, Jerry Chang

Master's Theses

The Neuroidal model poses a neurobiologically plausible theory for modeling the brain. This symbolic network has been shown to capture realistic memorization behaviors using the JOIN algorithm. The model has also been recently improved by incorporating Watts-Strogatz small-worlds within its base structure. From the efforts of neuroscience researchers, we have access to the Drosophila melanogaster (D. melanogaster) fruit fly’s connectome, which has been found to also contain small-worlds in this thesis. By synthesizing the Ocellar Ganglion (OCG) region of Drosophila, we compare a digitized version of a real-world brain with an instance of the Neuroidal model. In this thesis, we …

Abiotic Stress Impacts On Macrophomina Root Rot And Nano-Encapsulated Citrus Oils To Control Fruit And Foliar Pathogens Of Strawberry, Marina J. Gutierrez

Master's Theses

Disease remains one of the major constraints to the productivity and economic success of the California strawberry industry. The most important soilborne pathogen is Macrophomina phaseolina, causing Macrophomina root rot (MRR). The most economically significant airborne pathogens include Botrytis cinerea, causing Botrytis fruit rot (BFR), and Podosphaera aphanis, causing powdery mildew (PM).

Disease severity of MRR is highly dependent on environmental factors. Therefore, understanding which abiotic stressors contribute most to disease development is crucial for effective management. A two-year field experiment at Cal Poly, SLO (2024 and 2025) evaluated the effects of drought stress, two elevated chloride …

Using Scenario-Based Design Activities To Explore Sociotechnical Thinking In Engineering Professionals, James M. Whealan Dec 2025

Using Scenario-Based Design Activities To Explore Sociotechnical Thinking In Engineering Professionals, James M. Whealan

Master's Theses

Sociotechnical thinking is the ability to recognize the interconnectedness of both technical and non-technical dimensions such as environmental, economic, social, cultural, and political factors. Although traditional engineering curriculum often emphasizes technical knowledge and skills, research suggests that engineering work is inherently sociotechnical. While sociotechnical thinking is a critical engineering skill, relatively little is understood about the nature of it or the different aspects comprised within it. To that end, this study addresses the following research question: What sociotechnical factors do engineering professionals consider in a collaborative scenario-based design activity? To answer this question, we conducted a qualitative study of engineering …

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Accurate prediction of atmospheric air pollutants is critical for public health protection and environmental management. Traditional machine learning (ML) methods achieve high spatial resolution but lack physicochemical constraints, leading to systematic biases that compromise exposure estimates for epidemiological studies. Chemical transport models incorporate atmospheric physics but require expensive parameterization and often fail to capture local-scale variability crucial for health impact assessment. This gap between data-driven accuracy and physical realism presents a major obstacle to advancing air quality science. We address this challenge through a novel physics-informed deep learning framework that integrates advection–diffusion equations and fluid dynamics constraints directly into neural …

The Food Truck: A Multi-Product Newsvendor With Expectile Risk, Sekyiwaah Nuamah Dec 2025

The Food Truck: A Multi-Product Newsvendor With Expectile Risk, Sekyiwaah Nuamah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Newsvendor Problem is a fundamental model in Operation Research and Supply Chain Management used to determine the optimal order quantity under uncertain demand to minimize expected costs.
This research extends the classical Newsvendor problem to a multi--product setting, addressing the risk of asymmetric cost structures faced by a food truck. This thesis introduces expectile risk measures to quantify and manage uncertainty in demand, moving beyond traditional risk metrics. To evaluate the impact of expectile-based decision-making, we analyze three types of demand distributions--simple, symmetric, and skewed. For skewed distributions, we apply linear spline inverse interpolation to derive expectile values from …

Spatial–Temporal Evolution Of The Box Springs Plutonic Complex, Riverside, Ca, Mateo Ospino Díaz Dec 2025

Spatial–Temporal Evolution Of The Box Springs Plutonic Complex, Riverside, Ca, Mateo Ospino Díaz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The mechanisms of pluton emplacement into continental crust have long been debated in igneous geology, with early models emphasizing forceful processes such as ballooning, later contrasted by alternative emplacement mechanisms including diapirism, incremental assembly, stoping and, emplacement by sheets and dikes. These contrasting perspectives highlight the complexity of the construction of mid-crustal intrusions and the need for case studies that integrate multiple datasets. The Box Springs Plutonic Complex (BSPC) in the northern Peninsular Ranges Batholith (PRB) preserves structural, textural, and compositional features that record its emplacement and internal construction. Although its lithology, structure, and geochemistry have been described, an integrated …

Examination Of Differences Of Similar-Sized Martian Craters At The Simple-Complex Transition As Revealed By High-Resolution Imaging And Stereo-Derived Topography, Lindsey Dorn

Geosciences

Impact craters on Mars have a wide range of morphologies, and the relationship between the mechanics of their formation and their eventual morphologies is still not completely understood. By examining craters within a narrow diameter range, impact energies are constrained to similar values - enabling focused investigation of target properties and their influence on crater excavation and modification. There is a transition from simple bowl-shaped depressions to complex craters with terraced walls and central floor structures with increasing crater diameter. We analyzed target influences on morphology by examining eleven well-preserved craters of varying morphologies in the 7 to 9 km …

Most clinicians (85-77%) were very or extremely concerned about low accuracy, confusion over results, false expectations, and eugenics. Nonetheless, when asked to vote on whether …

The Effect Of An English Mother Tongue On Spanish Language Acquisition, Erin Wallace Dec 2025

The Effect Of An English Mother Tongue On Spanish Language Acquisition, Erin Wallace

Honors Theses

This study investigates how English influences the Spanish acquisition of English-speaking learners by analyzing written errors, background factors, and interview data. Using two linguistic classification frameworks, it identifies both the types and underlying causes of errors, revealing that gender and plural agreement issues, verb forms, word order problems, and subjunctive misuse are the most frequent difficulties. These errors primarily stem from first-language transfer, overgeneralization, and instructional gaps. The findings highlight the need for targeted practice, contrastive analysis, and greater exposure to authentic Spanish input. Despite limitations such as small sample size and incomplete interview participation, the study offers direction for …
