Drawing on literature review, case studies, feasibility analysis, and conceptual development, this research identifies several key functional requirements such platforms must meet, such as intuitive interaction, real-time feedback, and compatibility with existing design tools. Based on an analysis of key functional requirements, the paper proposes a five-module conceptual framework encompassing interpreter, modeler, analyzer, planner, and producer. The findings reveal that these platforms …
The Paradigm Shift Of Inclusive Design, Ying Jiang, Ye Zhou
The Paradigm Shift Of Inclusive Design, Ying Jiang, Ye Zhou
IASDR Conference Series
Inclusive design has emerged as a vital concept under the orientation of "human-centered" approaches. With the growing imperative of sustainable development, the scope of inclusive design has gradually expanded into a broader framework of "humanity-centered" practices. From a relational perspective, inclusive design can be understood through four paradigmatic dimensions: the relationship between humans and products, between humans and others, between humans and the environment, and between humans and themselves. On one hand, human-centered inclusive design primarily focuses on the relationship between people and products, and interpersonal care, emphasizing how design products meet human needs and how individuals engage in collaboration …

IASDR Conference Series
With the global rise of social media platforms, algorithm-driven recommendation systems have improved the relevance of content suggestions but have also introduced issues such as “filter bubbles,” a diminished sense of user control, and barriers to exploration. Most existing studies focus on optimizing algorithms, paying less attention to how users interact with these systems. To address this gap, we conducted an exploratory user survey (N = 30) and identified three core pain points: low utilization of history features, a lack of effective interest-management tools, and obstacles to discovering new content. Drawing on theories of human–AI collaboration and distributed cognition, we …

Making Meaning Manifest: Communication And Relevance In Design Thinking, Luke Feast
IASDR Conference Series
This paper examines communication in design thinking, drawing on Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory as an alternative to the prevailing information-processing model. While design thinking is commonly framed as problem-solving, we propose that designed artefacts function as ostensive stimuli that guide users' inferential processes rather than encoding fixed meanings. The ostensive-inferential model reveals how designers communicate through intentions, where users actively infer meaning based on evidence, context, and relevance. This framework explains complex communicative phenomena, including affordances, metaphors, cross-cultural design considerations, and ethical dimensions of design practice. This perspective has significant implications for design thinking education and practice, emphasising communication …

Navigating complex spatial-semantic structures in immersive environments remains a key challenge in the digital preservation and public engagement of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). This paper presents a navigation interface that integrates Multiples and Multilevel Worlds-in-Miniatures (MM- WiMs) to support efficient and meaningful exploration of multi-scale cultural information in VR. We conducted three formative workshops to identify six design considerations in immersive ICH exploration. Based on our findings, we designed a dual-view interface combining overview and semantic detail perspectives. A user study comparing MM-WiMs with single-view WiMs across four tasks shows that MM-WiMs significantly improves navigation efficiency, reduces cognitive load, and …

AI holds transformative potential, and researchers have explored it from various perspectives in hopes of improving design efficiency and quality. its current applications are often limited to automating repetitive tasks, rather than being treated as collaborative partners for designers of co-creating inspiration and value. This oversight has triggered a critical gap: the lack of a new cognitive framework for design practice to reconcile human creativity with design efficiency assisted by AI. This study adopts a workflow and task-oriented perspective to examine how designers currently engage with AI technologies. Drawing on formative research, we identified designers’ practical needs and usage patterns, …
