Quantifying Dna Groove Binding Dynamics Of Netropsin Using Optical Tweezers, Jacob Mcnally
Quantifying Dna Groove Binding Dynamics Of Netropsin Using Optical Tweezers, Jacob Mcnally
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Netropsin is a small molecule that binds to the minor groove of DNA and serves as a model scaffold for DNA-minor groove binding anticancer drugs. Understanding how Netropsin interacts with DNA under mechanical stress is important for characterizing how similar molecules function in biological environments. In this work, we used dual-beam optical tweezers to study how Netropsin binding affects the mechanical behavior of single DNA molecules under applied force. Individual DNA molecules were held under controlled forces while Netropsin was introduced at varying concentrations. Constant-force measurements were used to probe binding dynamics; however, we found binding occurred too rapidly to …

A Real-Time Framework For Forecasting Metal Prices, Andrea Bastianin, Luca Rossini, Lorenzo Tonni
A Real-Time Framework For Forecasting Metal Prices, Andrea Bastianin, Luca Rossini, Lorenzo Tonni
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper develops a real-time forecasting framework for monthly real prices of four key industrial metals – aluminum, copper, nickel, and zinc – whose demand is rising due to their widespread use in manufacturing and low-carbon technologies. To replicate the information set available to forecasters in real time, we construct a new dataset combining daily financial variables with first-release macroeconomic indicators and use nowcasting techniques to address publication lags. Within this real-time environment, we evaluate the predictive accuracy of a broad set of univariate, multivariate, and factor-augmented models, comparing their performance with two industry benchmarks: survey expectations and futures-spot spread …

Chronic Absenteeism: A Case Study In A Central Virginia High School Investigating Student Habits And Potential Interventions, Ronald R. Proffitt
Chronic Absenteeism: A Case Study In A Central Virginia High School Investigating Student Habits And Potential Interventions, Ronald R. Proffitt
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Abstract
The purpose of this single case study was to discover and determine the contributing factors for chronic absenteeism for high school students at a rural Central Virginia high school in order to discover potential solutions to increase attendance and to combat chronic absenteeism. An additional factor considered was habits that may have formed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have led to an increase in chronic absenteeism rates. The theory that guided this study was Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) Ecological Systems Theory, as it directly addressed how a child relates and reacts to their environments based upon their interactions. The participants …

In this CPLR article 78 proceeding, the Court of Appeals affirmed the denial of a tenant's succession rights to a deceased brother's Mitchell-Lama apartment. The landlord (HPD) found the tenant failed to prove primary residency for the required one-year period prior to the brother's death, despite being an eligible family member and listed on income affidavits. While the tenant presented some evidence like SNAP correspondence and power of attorney over the brother's bank account, the Court held the agency had a rational basis for concluding this was insufficient. The Court emphasized its deferential standard of review for administrative determinations, upholding …

Impact Of Complex Operating Conditions Caused By Superposition Of Photovoltaic Access And System Short-Circuit On Distribution Network Lightning Arrester Operation, Jin Bai, Xiu Zhou, Xin Yang, Tian Tian, Rui Yin
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
In recent years, a large number of photovoltaic power sources have been connected to the distribution network, and the line voltage fluctuations caused thereby have become a research hotspot. However, at present, there is insufficient understanding of the complex operating conditions formed by the superposition of overvoltage generated by short-circuit faults in the distribution network and system voltage fluctuations caused by photovoltaic access, as well as a lack of knowledge about the fault mechanisms of distribution network lightning arresters and other equipment under such operating conditions. To solve the above problems, a simulation calculation model for substation overvoltage with photovoltaic access is …
