Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Faculty Publications

Background

Stillbirth at term is a major public-health concern. In high-income settings, the most commonly identifiable causes are unrecognised fetal growth restriction (about 14%) and placental abruption (about 12%), but 20 to 40% of term stillbirths remain unexplained. Whether modern machine learning can substantively improve prediction over established clinical risk-factor models is unresolved.

Objective

To evaluate the predictive performance of three machine-learning models, elastic-net logistic regression, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting, for stillbirth at term in a population-based cohort, and to quantify the achievable ceiling using static registry variables.

Study Design

Secondary analysis of 302,192 term pregnancies (322 stillbirths; …

Color-Blind Resilience: How Uniform Climate Standards Reproduce Environmental Inequality In The Rockaways, Aaryan M. Nair Jan 2026

Color-Blind Resilience: How Uniform Climate Standards Reproduce Environmental Inequality In The Rockaways, Aaryan M. Nair

Publications and Research

This paper examines how ostensibly uniform climate resilience standards can reproduce environmental inequality in socially uneven landscapes, using the Rockaway Peninsula in New York City as a critical case study. While flood-resistant building codes, zoning regulations, and insurance frameworks are designed to provide equal protection across flood-prone areas, this analysis argues that their “color-blind” application obscures and intensifies underlying disparities in financial capacity, housing conditions, and tenure. Drawing on environmental justice (EJ) theory, the paper identifies two key mechanisms through which inequality is reproduced. First, “code without capacity” demonstrates how uniform technical standards—such as elevation requirements under NYC Building Code …

All Games Have Equilibria, M. Ali Khan, Arthur Paul Pedersen, Maxwell B. Stinchcombe Jan 2026

All Games Have Equilibria, M. Ali Khan, Arthur Paul Pedersen, Maxwell B. Stinchcombe

Publications and Research

Research on Nash equilibrium existence for infinite games has grown into a patchwork of technical preconditions and counterexamples. This paper presents a unified program in equilibrium theory by revising the predominant model of mixed strategies based on countable additivity. A game is specified by a nonempty set of players and, for each player, a nonempty action set and a bounded von Neumann-Morgenstern utility function. Every such game is shown to admit a Nash equilibrium in finitely additive mixed strategies. In addition, the equilibrium correspondence for any such game is shown to be nonempty, compact-valued, and upper hemicontinuous, and the same …

The Impact Of Substance Abuse Problems And Serious Mental Illness/Serious Emotional Distress On Post-Discharge Residential Status Among Clients With Behavioral And Cognitive Disorders: Evidence From Samhsa Mh-Cld Data, Eden Moges, Norma Rochez, William Peycha, Aditya Chakraborty

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and cognitive disorders can undermine housing stability, a key determinant of mental health recovery, with persistent disparities across demographic and socioeconomic groups. This study examined the associations of substance abuse problems (SAP) and serious mental illness/serious emotional distress (SMISED) with residential status at discharge from mental health facilities.

METHODS: This cross-sectional study used the utilized data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize demographic characteristics, whereas univariate and multivariable logistic regression models were employed to assess associations between the covariates and the residential outcome, adjusting for a variety of …

Paneugenesis: A Regenerative Systems Hypothesis For Advancing Health Promotion, Craig M. Becker, Leslie Hoglund, Beth Chaney, Joseph G. L. Lee, Michael Stellefson, Alex Davis Jan 2026

Paneugenesis: A Regenerative Systems Hypothesis For Advancing Health Promotion, Craig M. Becker, Leslie Hoglund, Beth Chaney, Joseph G. L. Lee, Michael Stellefson, Alex Davis

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Despite major advances in health promotion science, dominant approaches remain largely prevention-and risk-reduction-oriented. The prevailing orientation creates a substantial opportunity to advance generative, system-design strategies that intentionally produce well-being rather than merely prevent disease. This article proposes paneugenesis as a regenerative systems framework and a testable theoretical model for the intentional creation of net-positive outcomes, thereby extending health promotion beyond its traditional pathogenic emphasis. Paneugenesis integrates systems science, salutogenesis, behavioral science, complexity theory, and quality management principles into a unified four-function process: operationalizing idealized outcomes, identifying key precursors, optimizing processes, and continually plotting progress through feedback mechanisms. The central hypothesis …

The Moderating Role Of Social And Emotional Support In The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Adult Mental Health Across Racial Groups: The Need For Investing In Social Capital, Syeda S. Jesmin, Aditya Chakraborty Jan 2026

The Moderating Role Of Social And Emotional Support In The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Adult Mental Health Across Racial Groups: The Need For Investing In Social Capital, Syeda S. Jesmin, Aditya Chakraborty

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background

The sustained impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) on mental health outcomes in adulthood is well documented in the literature. ACE survivors may be especially vulnerable to poor mental health outcomes if they have limited or no social support. This study examined the moderating role of social support on the association of ACEs and mental health across different racial groups.

Methods

Data were obtained from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n = 14,327). The nine ACE questions about traumatic events in childhood were used to create ACE scores. Chi-square tests were used for bivariate comparisons. Both stratified …

Modeling Healthcare Data With Logistic Quantile And Uniform-Based Mixture Polynomial Distributions, Mohan D. Pant, Aditya Chakraborty, Jovanna A. Tracz Jan 2026

Modeling Healthcare Data With Logistic Quantile And Uniform-Based Mixture Polynomial Distributions, Mohan D. Pant, Aditya Chakraborty, Jovanna A. Tracz

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Continuous healthcare data often deviate from normality, which can substantially increase the risk of making invalid inferences, given that many inferential statistical procedures rely on normality assumption. To obviate this issue, we propose a new family of non-normal distributions based on a linear combination of the quantile functions of standard logistic and uniform (0, 1) distributions. This new family of non-normal distributions is studied within three different methods: L-moments, conventional moments, and percentiles. Its performance is compared among the three methods in the context of parameter estimation and data modeling. The results of Monte Carlo simulation and bootstrapping techniques indicate …

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Understanding factors shaping perceptions of cancer-related information is important for public health communication. This study examined associations of three information-related predictors, understanding medical statistics, confidence in online health information, and difficulty interpreting social media information, with two outcomes: cancer information was too hard to understand (CTU) and concern about cancer information quality (CCQ). Data came from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey. The cross-sectional study included 1972 participants. Survey-weighted univariable and multivariable logistic regression models assessed associations between the three predictors and CTU and CCQ, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, health insurance, and cancer history. LASSO logistic regression, random forest, …

Build, Baby, Build: Federal Takings For Affordable Homes, Desiree C. Hensley Jan 2026

Build, Baby, Build: Federal Takings For Affordable Homes, Desiree C. Hensley

Missouri Law Review

The private housing market in the U.S. fails to produce sufficient affordable housing for the people who need it. Even middle-income Americans are stretched to buy or rent. If local and state governments cannot respond effectively, may the federal government simply use eminent domain to build affordable homes to correct the nation’s housing market, including the high cost of land? Conventional wisdom is that the Constitution prohibits such federal action. This understanding arises from a brief period during which the federal government built fifty housing projects—approximately 21,000 housing units—in thirty-five cities across the United States during the Great Depression. The …

Missouri Law Review

In a paradigm-shifting departure from conventional First Amendment analysis, this study is the first empirical examination of First Amendment rights, spanning every level of the federal judiciary, for students in public schools. Departing from conventional narratives, our scholarship examines how the federal court adjudicates the nuances surrounding the First Amendment within public K-12 educational institutions.

No Thanks, Just Looking: A Post-Transunion Analysis Of Session-Replay Surveillance And Historical Privacy Harms, Maggie N. Munsterman Jan 2026

No Thanks, Just Looking: A Post-Transunion Analysis Of Session-Replay Surveillance And Historical Privacy Harms, Maggie N. Munsterman

Missouri Law Review

The constitutional doctrine of standing serves as a gateway to the federal courthouse, filtering out claims that lack a personal, concrete stake in the outcome. In privacy litigation, the alleged injuries may feel deeply personal but are often intangible and statutory. Amidst this tension, the injury-in-fact requirement of Article III has proven particularly thorny. The Supreme Court’s decisions in Spokeo, Inc. v. Robins and TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez set forth a framework requiring a “concrete” injury that bears a “close relationship” to harms traditionally recognized in American law. Yet, lower courts’ interpretation of this mandate varies considerably, especially in the …

Hyena Den Distribution, Human-Hyena Interactions And Mitigation Strategies In The Greater Amboseli Ecosystem, Katherine Elizabeth Davis Matczak Jan 2026

Hyena Den Distribution, Human-Hyena Interactions And Mitigation Strategies In The Greater Amboseli Ecosystem, Katherine Elizabeth Davis Matczak

Honors Theses and Capstones

The Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is a prevalent predator across Africa, recognized for their noticeable gait and powerful jaws which enable them to maul and scavenge on prey. Due to human population growth and encroachment onto wildlife territory, the overlap between human settlements and hyena den sites has become a growing concern, particularly regarding livestock predation. Livestock is intrinsic to livelihoods across Africa, with most individuals deriving their livelihoods from pastoralism. This paper provides an evaluation of den proximities to communities, hyena diet preference, human-hyena conflict/attitudes, and mitigation strategies used to protect hyenas, livestock, and the people. Results …

Elena Ferrante: A Borderless Identity, Alexander James Hankins Jan 2026

Elena Ferrante: A Borderless Identity, Alexander James Hankins

Honors Theses and Capstones

This thesis examines the concept of identity in the works of Elena Ferrante, arguing that her fiction presents identity not as an isolated, self-contained construct, but as something relational, fluid, and deeply shaped by environment. Focusing primarily on The Neapolitan Quartet, the project introduces “boundaries” as a central framework, drawing on relational-cultural theory to explore how identities are formed through connection as much as separation. In Ferrante’s Naples, the setting functions as a microcosm of broader social forces — class disparity, gender inequality, generational tension, and political ideologies — that collectively shape individual experience.

At the core of this analysis …

Gendered Coverage In Sports Media: An Analysis Of Espn’S Representation Of Women’S Sports, Abigail C. Leonard Jan 2026

Gendered Coverage In Sports Media: An Analysis Of Espn’S Representation Of Women’S Sports, Abigail C. Leonard

Honors Theses and Capstones

Despite growing participation in women’s sports, media coverage continues to reflect significant gender disparities. This thesis examines how ESPN, as a leading sports media network, contributes to the construction of gendered narratives through its coverage of women’s sports and female athletes. Drawing on framing theory, agenda-setting theory, and social identity theory, this study analyzes headlines, visuals, language, narratives, and broadcast patterns to explore how meaning is constructed in sports coverage.

The findings suggest that while coverage of women’s sports has increased, it often remains positioned as secondary to men’s sports. Female athletes are more frequently described using language that emphasizes …

Flood Damage And Social Vulnerability In Coastal New Hampshire, Mitchell S. Berry Jan 2026

Flood Damage And Social Vulnerability In Coastal New Hampshire, Mitchell S. Berry

Honors Theses and Capstones

This study investigates the relationship between flood-induced building damage and social vulnerability in coastal New Hampshire, with a focus on communities increasingly affected by sea-level rise, storm surge, and high tide events. Using a dataset of 2,528 single-family homes, the analysis integrates flood depth maps (coastal, pluvial, and fluvial), building-level damage estimates, and a housing-burden-based metric to assess how physical and social factors interact to shape flood impacts. Results show that flood depth is the primary driver of building damage, with the most severe impacts concentrated in coastal areas experiencing deeper inundation. However, when buildings are grouped by vulnerability, higher …

Enhancing Nursing Education To Improve Care For Women Experiencing A Substance Use Disorder During Pregnancy, Sadie Caddell Jan 2026

Enhancing Nursing Education To Improve Care For Women Experiencing A Substance Use Disorder During Pregnancy, Sadie Caddell

Honors Theses and Capstones

Introduction: Nursing education prepares students to care for patient populations by enhancing knowledge of clinical pathophysiology and applying foundational nursing skills to tailor to the unique care requirements of each patient. When analyzing the nursing course curriculums as guides for what is included in nursing education, it is essential to consider relevant patient populations to ensure adequate representation in lectures. Inclusivity of relevant patient populations within curriculums equips students to encounter a variety of patients in a clinical setting. Perinatal substance use has prevalence in the local community of this university, with 6% of all births in New Hampshire in …

Μmodules: A Low-Cost, Eurorack-Compatible Modular Audio Synthesis System, Nolan K. Juneau Jan 2026

Μmodules: A Low-Cost, Eurorack-Compatible Modular Audio Synthesis System, Nolan K. Juneau

Honors Theses and Capstones

The modular audio synthesizer is one of the fastest-growing industries in contemporary music technology. Unlike a traditional audio synthesizer, a modular synthesizer allows for the user to directly control the signal path and effects of the synthesized sound, allowing for a workflow that is completely customizable to an individual musician and their creative vision. However, the modules and cases currently in production for the common “Eurorack” design standard can be prohibitively expensive to new users, often costing thousands of dollars for even a small system. The µModules project aims to eliminate this financial barrier to modular synthesis by using inexpensive …
