Development Of Feature Tokenizer Deep Learning Model For Fault Diagnosis In Marine Propulsion System, Pratik Anand Deshpande, J. Preetha Roselyn, Prabha Sundaravadivel

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The fault diagnostics in Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor drive system is critical for operational safety and system lifespan in propulsion system applications. However, signature parameters such as currents, voltages, speed, and torque have provided nonlinear behavior, which limits the usefulness of traditional model-based approaches. This research provides a deep learning based intelligent system to monitor the failures in marine propulsion system. Each signal feature is represented as a structured token, with a specific class token used to collect global contextual information. The proposed model captures both local temporal dynamics and global inter-feature interdependence multi-layer self-attention processes, allowing for the …

Conventional surgical training systems are hampered by restricted case exposure, expense, and patient safety, whereas VR simulators often lack contextual and tactile realism. In this paper, an optical see-through AR simulator that overlays 3D anatomical guidance and instrument trajectory cues onto a physical phantom and provides real-time multimodal feedback and automated scoring are developed. A prospective controlled study (n=30 residents) compared AR training with a VR simulator and conventional model-based practice for a standardized orthopedic drilling task. The results were scores on completion time, placement deviation, error count, Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) global rating, confidence, decision-making accuracy, …

Between Motherhood And The Motherland: Navigating Challenges To Rank Advancement Of Women In The U.S. Army, Valeria Suarez Jan 2026

Between Motherhood And The Motherland: Navigating Challenges To Rank Advancement Of Women In The U.S. Army, Valeria Suarez

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Female officers remain a minority in the U.S. Army. Motherhood, dependent care, and sexual assault are some of the reasons why they decide to give up on their Army careers. The following study intends to examine how the impact of policy changes to accommodate female Army officers’ increased retention and consequently promoted the rank advancement of women to the rank of major, or O4 and above. Through conversations with 14 armed forces officers, both men and women, it is evident that the gender neutral culture of the Army proves to be detrimental to women’s rank advancement. For them to be …

Toward Secure Complex Uav Cyber-Physical Systems: A Unified Threat Taxonomy And Cross-Layer Survey Of Cybersecurity Challenges, Muhammad Iftikhar Umrani, Bernard Butler, Aisling O’ Driscoll, Steven Davy

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are employed for a variety of purposes in civil and military applications, such as package delivery, disaster management, and more. Within the last decade, three characteristics, namely enhanced autonomy, onboard intelligence and situational awareness, have enabled UAVs to navigate their surroundings, make intelligent decisions, and perform tasks, either independently, or with limited direct human control. Therefore, such UAVs can be considered as complex cyberphysical systems. Whilst these developments enhance UAV capabilities, they also introduce unique cybersecurity challenges by expanding the attack surface through which adversaries can seek to disrupt missions, thereby compromising confidentiality, integrity, availability, …

Myopia And Eye Disease: From Correlation To Causation, James Loughman, Mark A. Bullimore, Daniel Ian Flitcroft Jan 2026

Myopia And Eye Disease: From Correlation To Causation, James Loughman, Mark A. Bullimore, Daniel Ian Flitcroft

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Myopia is increasingly recognised as a risk factor strongly linked to visual impairment and sight-threatening ocular disease rather than a simple refractive state. The assumption of causality to these secondary effects underpins myopia control and its long-term public health value. This review considers epidemiologic, longitudinal, mechanistic, interventional, natural-experiment, and genetic evidence to evaluate causality based on Bradford Hill's nine criteria: strength, consistency, specificity, temporality, biological gradient, plausibility, coherence, experiment, and analogy. The graded dose-response relationship between myopia and visual impairment has been demonstrated across multiple populations. Similar patterns are shown for a range of myopia-related ocular diseases. Risks for myopic …

A Unified Framework For Evaluating Training Efficiency In Deep (Bayesian) Neural Networks: Metrics, Overtraining, Stopping Criteria, And Grokking Computer Science, Eduardo Cueto Mendoza Jan 2026

A Unified Framework For Evaluating Training Efficiency In Deep (Bayesian) Neural Networks: Metrics, Overtraining, Stopping Criteria, And Grokking Computer Science, Eduardo Cueto Mendoza

Doctoral

Measuring training efficiency for artificial neural networks is an open research problem, current literature reports several attempts to define measures or create reporting frameworks. Current methods lack generality as they require measurements of the hardware or software thus, comparing efficiency between different systems can be difficult. Similarly, current metrics or frameworks generally do not propose the use of the metrics to directly improve training efficiency. This thesis presents three main contributions: (1) a novel framework that quantifies the training efficiency of a neural architecture on a learning task as the average ratio of model accuracy to total energy consumption during …

Purpose: SMEs are the backbone of the European economic model and represent 99.8% of all businesses, highlighting the importance of research that assesses challenges and opportunities faced by SMEs. The reviewed literature revealed a significant lack of research on how SMEs can develop management, teamwork, and team-building skills in the context of the twin transition (i.e., digital and green transitions), particularly regarding digital transformation and its impact on economic development and business cooperation. Researchers have presented evidence of the difficulties SMEs face in competing with corporations due to numerous constraints, including a lack of investment and qualified human resources. To …

Motivation System Evoked By High Performance Work System In Chinese Universities And Colleges - An Examination Of The Relationship Between Human Resource Practices, Basic Psychological Needs, And Job Performance, Juan Chen Jan 2026

Motivation System Evoked By High Performance Work System In Chinese Universities And Colleges - An Examination Of The Relationship Between Human Resource Practices, Basic Psychological Needs, And Job Performance, Juan Chen

Doctoral

High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) are strategic, integrated Human Resource Practices (HRPS) designed to enhance employee abilities, motivation, and opportunities for participation, driving sustained organisational performance. While early research emphasized commitment HRPS, recent studies recognise that control and commitment HRPS are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, with neither holding an absolute advantage. Their success depends on contextual factors such as country, industry, organisation, economic environment, and workforce. In Chinese higher education institutions, transitioning from a high-commitment “iron rice bowl” system to a more control-oriented HR model has created tensions between efficiency and academic freedom. Based on the resource-based view, social exchange …

Investigating The Biocompatibility Of Nanosilver Hydroxyapatite Coatings With Human Gingival Fibroblasts To Enhance Abutment Integrity For Periodontal Health, Sian Morgan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Dental implants are susceptible to bacterial colonisation, which can initiate peri-implant inflammation and ultimately lead to peri-implantitis and implant failure. Antimicrobial surface modifications represent a promising strategy to mitigate bacterial infection however, such approaches must preserve biocompatibility with peri-implant soft tissue cells to ensure effective mucosal sealing and long-term implant success. In particular, human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) play a critical role in soft tissue integration at the implant-abutment interface, yet their interactions with antimicrobial silver-based coatings remain insufficiently understood. This thesis investigates the biocompatibility of nano silver-hydroxyapatite (Ag+nHA) coatings deposited on titanium substrates, with the aim of developing an antimicrobial …

Coupled Thermo-Structural Analysis Of Steel Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Structural Members, Bin Zhang Jan 2026

Coupled Thermo-Structural Analysis Of Steel Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Structural Members, Bin Zhang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis investigates the coupled thermal, flexural and steel–concrete bond response of steel-reinforced geopolymer concrete (GPC) and ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC) beam cross-sections subjected to one-sided standard fire exposure. A sequential analytical framework is developed to link transient heat-transfer analysis, temperature-dependent sectional flexural analysis, and temperature-dependent bond and flexural–bond coupling assessment. The thermal analysis is performed using a one-dimensional transient heat-conduction model implemented in MATLAB PDEPE. Separate temperature-dependent density, specific-heat and thermal-conductivity relationships are adopted for OPCC and GPC. A dedicated OPCC model of the B1 validation specimen is assessed against 13 matched experimental reinforcement-temperature measurements, giving R^2=0.9542 and an …

Modern Day Saints And The Production Of A Contemporary Pilgrimage Site: Comparative Analysis Of St. Pio Of San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy And Sai Baba Of Shirdi, India, Kiran Shinde, Anna Trono Prof Jan 2026

Modern Day Saints And The Production Of A Contemporary Pilgrimage Site: Comparative Analysis Of St. Pio Of San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy And Sai Baba Of Shirdi, India, Kiran Shinde, Anna Trono Prof

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Places valorised by saints have attracted pilgrimage for a long time as devotion to saints is a way to achieve both material wellbeing and spiritual growth. Yet, the cult following of modern-day saints in contemporary societies has become a topic for exploration only in recent years (Di Giovine, 2010; Shinde & Pinkney; 2013, Srinivas, 2008). A few excellent hagiographies discuss the material and non-material world created around charismatic modern-day saints with global followership (Waghorne, 2004; Weiss, 2005; Shepherd, 1986). Given the immense popularity of modern-day saints many questions arise- what kind of pilgrimage landscape is created around them? Are they …

Coordinated Whole-Body Dynamic Pressing And Reaction Inhibition — Impact Of High-Intensity Intermittent Exercise And Dehydration, Modesto A. Lebron Jan 2026

Coordinated Whole-Body Dynamic Pressing And Reaction Inhibition — Impact Of High-Intensity Intermittent Exercise And Dehydration, Modesto A. Lebron

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Dynamic whole-body pressing movements are an imperative aspect of various sport and occupational settings, requiring motor coordination to kinetically sequence from lower- to upper-extremities. Recently, exercises such as the jammer arm punch press (JPP) have increased in popularity, promoted as an exercise to improve strength and force transfer. While the JPP has observed increased practical utility, its use in research is limited potentially due to difficulties with quantifying exercise intensity. One method to quantify exercise intensity is the assessment of velocity, serving as the basis for velocity-based training. For optimization, this strategy requires an understanding of velocity ranges and their …

Generation Of Wave Turbulence In Dipolar Gases Driven Across Their Phase Transitions, Georgios A. Bougas, Koushik Mukherjee, Simeon Mistakidis Jan 2026

Generation Of Wave Turbulence In Dipolar Gases Driven Across Their Phase Transitions, Georgios A. Bougas, Koushik Mukherjee, Simeon Mistakidis

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ultracold quantum gases with long-range anisotropic interactions host novel exotic phases of matter, such as super solids, exhibiting both rigid and superfluid characteristics. The impact of this interplay on the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of dipolar gases, and in particular its connection with universal turbulent behavior, remains highly unexplored. Here, upon considering a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate of dysprosium atoms being dynamically driven across the super solid-superfluid phase transition and vice versa, we unveil the emergence of a robust nonequilibrium quasi-steady state. This state displays self-similar momentum distributions exhibiting algebraic decay at large momenta, with scaling exponents supporting the existence of wave turbulence. …

Decentralized Linear Solvers: Communication Cost And Privacy, Nelson G. Brasil, Vinay A. Vaishampayan

Publications and Research

We consider the problem of multiple parties iteratively solving a system of linear equations in a decentralized manner. Specifically, we solve for $\negr{x} \in \R^n$, the $n \times n$ system of linear equations $M\negr{x} = \negr{b}$ when each party only knows their row of the matrix $M$ and a single component of $\negr{b} \in \R^n$. Our objective is to determine the tradeoff between the accuracy of the solution and the total communication cost measured in bits. A fully connected, reliable mesh network is assumed to connect the different parties. We develop a general formulation that applies to a large class …

Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). To implement best conservation practices for this species, its biology should be well understood. Attempting to characterize the foraging physiology of free-ranging hawksbill sea turtles is complicated by the fact that sampling is typically limited to nesting females during the reproductive season. Without data from non-reproductive periods, it is difficult to determine whether observed physiological values reflect baseline conditions or are specific to the energetically demanding nesting season. Accordingly, in this study, we described the physiology of foraging in …

Missionary Body Politics: Physical Education In West China, 1905-1950, Cory Willmott Jan 2026

Missionary Body Politics: Physical Education In West China, 1905-1950, Cory Willmott

Asia Pacific Perspectives

Republican Era China saw a radical transformation in Chinese physical culture as it aimed to compete in the global geopolitics of nation-states. Employing an historical ethnographic approach, this paper outlines how the unique conditions of Sichuanese warlordism and secret societies affected missionary relations with the Guomindang (GMD) as they implemented increasingly militarized physical education programs. Before the 1928 GMD consolidation of power, missionaries and GMD educators aligned with the YM/ WCA in physical education programs. After the GMD moved their headquarters to Chongqing in 1938, relations soured between the GMD and the Sichuan missionaries. Although the latter had been the …
