Runner's High Or Running High, Whitney Ogle Jan 2026

Runner's High Or Running High, Whitney Ogle

IdeaFest 2026

Cannabis use has been associated colloquially with laziness, but inactivity in cannabis users has not been supported by research. In fact, more research is showing people are pairing cannabis with physical activity for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this study was to understand the prevalence of and cannabis use behaviors among distance runners who participated in the Avenue of the Giants 10k, 1/2 Marathon, and Full Marathon in Spring 2025. 42% of the sample of 151 participants reported consuming cannabis and 95% of the total sample reported they don't think athletes who test positive should be banned from …

Athletes Should Play More Sports : An Ecological Dynamics Perspective, Adam Garrison Jan 2026

Athletes Should Play More Sports : An Ecological Dynamics Perspective, Adam Garrison

IdeaFest 2026

This project looks at early sport specialization and its associated risks, including increased injury rates, burnout, and limited long-term athletic development. It highlights how repetitive, single-sport training can restrict adaptability and overall skill development in youth athletes. To combat this, the project explores ecological dynamics as an alternative approach. By emphasizing varied movement experiences, environmental learning, and adaptability, this approach promotes more holistic athlete development. The project ultimately argues that multi-sport participation naturally aligns with ecological dynamics and can help lessen the negative effects of early specialization.

Improving Suicide Screening In Oncology: High-Risk Older Adults And Males, Dezeray Stevens Jan 2026

Improving Suicide Screening In Oncology: High-Risk Older Adults And Males, Dezeray Stevens

IdeaFest 2026

Suicide risk among patients with cancer is often overlooked, despite being significantly higher than in the general population, especially among older adults and males. In many inpatient oncology settings, screening is inconsistent and limited to admission, leaving changes in distress undetected. This quality improvement project proposes a structured, multilevel approach, including standardized screening, improved communication, and policy-driven protocols. Guided by the Johns Hopkins model, the goal is to improve early identification and timely intervention. Expected outcomes include increased screening consistency, better recognition of distress, and improved patient safety.

The Menstrual Cycle, Dual-Hormone Hypothesis, And Competition: Implications For Athletic Performance, Gaia O'Neil Jan 2026

The Menstrual Cycle, Dual-Hormone Hypothesis, And Competition: Implications For Athletic Performance, Gaia O'Neil

IdeaFest 2026

This study examines how testosterone and cortisol interact to influence competitive drive and athletic performance in female collegiate athletes. Guided by the dual-hormone hypothesis, researchers predicted that testosterone would enhance competitiveness when cortisol is low. Results showed a significant interaction predicting competitive drive, but no effect on sprint performance. Additionally, menstrual cycle phase did not significantly impact hormones, motivation, or performance, suggesting that hormonal fluctuations may shape psychological aspects of competition more than physical outcomes.

Novel Tests Of Gravity Below 50 Microns, Rowan Botts Jan 2026

Novel Tests Of Gravity Below 50 Microns, Rowan Botts

IdeaFest 2026

he development of a unified theory encompassing the Standard Model and General Relativity often necessitates theorizing features that violate the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) and/or the gravitational Inverse-Square Law (ISL). Such a violation would indicate our current understanding of gravity is incomplete. Undergraduate researchers and faculty members at Cal Poly Humboldt are performing an experiment to measure gravitational influence at ranges less than 50 microns in an attempt to identify any deviations and explore the significance such a discovery would have. Using a compositional-dipole torsion pendulum and an oscillating attractor mass, torque is created on the pendulum to study its …

The Public Franchise Tradition As A Limit On Patent Takings, Laura E. Dolbow Jan 2026

The Public Franchise Tradition As A Limit On Patent Takings, Laura E. Dolbow

Publications

A longstanding debate exists over whether patents are forms of “private property” that the Takings Clause protects. Recently, in a different context, the Supreme Court stated that a patent is a specific form of property: a public franchise. Several scholars have argued that the public franchise characterization means patents are not protected by the Takings Clause at all. This Article identifies another potential implication of the public franchise framing. It argues that even if patents are viewed as protected by the Takings Clause, the public franchise framing suggests that the scope of that protection should be quite narrow.

Things Humans Do: The Use Of Esds On Autistic Children, Jami L. Anderson Jan 2026

Things Humans Do: The Use Of Esds On Autistic Children, Jami L. Anderson

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

On March 26, 2024, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a proposed rule (PR) that would ban the use of electrical stimulation devices (ESDs)—shock devices—for treatment of selfinjurious behavior (SIB) and aggressive behavior (AB). This PR was directed at Judge Rotenberg Education Center (JRC), a residential institution in Canton, Massachusetts, that treats children and young adults with profound intellectual and emotional impairments, most of whom are autistic. Medical evidence has well established that ESDs not only fail to treat SIB, but cause the rate and severity of SIB to worsen. This is the FDA’s second attempt to ban ESDs. …

Prisoners And Choice Democracy, Eileen Prescott, Michelle Theer Jan 2026

Prisoners And Choice Democracy, Eileen Prescott, Michelle Theer

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

This Article considers how eliminating meaningful choices inside prisons harms individuals and obstructs reintegration efforts. While any individual restrictions on incarcerated people may seem minor—such as limitations on the food available in the commissary— they accumulate to a point where people adopt passive, compliant behaviors and attitudes that are adaptive inside yet maladaptive outside the prison walls. Thus, we argue that even modest improvements in prisoner autonomy could reduce recidivism and achieve the public safety goals of incarceration.

Section III will analyze cases and opinions of the federal circuit courts that support the admission …

Body Of Law: When Content Moderation Becomes Gender Oppression And Triggers Legal Consequences, Sarah E. Bahrenburg Jan 2026

Body Of Law: When Content Moderation Becomes Gender Oppression And Triggers Legal Consequences, Sarah E. Bahrenburg

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

For as long as the Internet has existed, it has been used as a tool for good and as a tool for malice. However, there is a discrepancy between punishment for those maliciously invading individuals’ personal space and those posting consensual images of themselves for art or entertainment purposes (not to mention for work). Over the years, while attempting to create safe spaces for people to express themselves, the Internet has also created barriers to individuals doing just that. The Internet and the laws surrounding exposure therein have become increasingly misogynistic and anti-women’s sexual freedom. The laws encompassing safety on …

Get Out Of Jail Free: The Monopoly Of Big Pharma & Drug Addiction, Melissa E. Morello Jan 2026

Get Out Of Jail Free: The Monopoly Of Big Pharma & Drug Addiction, Melissa E. Morello

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

This article analyzes the legal and social parameters of drug addiction and the opioid epidemic, arguing that pharmaceutical companies, lawmakers, and systemic institutions have effectively “gamified” public health, addiction, and their own accountability. It traces the historical trajectory of drug regulation, from early opioid use and racially motivated enforcement policies to the War on Drugs and the emergence of the prescription opioid epidemic fueled by aggressive pharmaceutical marketing. The analysis explores pivotal case law and legislation addressing addiction, highlighting the legal system’s struggle to reconcile criminal accountability with the recognition of addiction as a disease. Throughout this article, there will …

Statistical Analysis Of Evidence In Criminal Cases, Giuliana Leon Carrillo Jan 2026

Statistical Analysis Of Evidence In Criminal Cases, Giuliana Leon Carrillo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ideally, the evaluation of relevant forensic evidence must corroborate the hypotheses that the prosecution and/or the defense holds regarding the commitment of a crime. Therefore, optimal forensic evidence would be the one that can be found all the time under the same circumstances, and cannot be found otherwise, making the forensic scientist able to evaluate this evidence given the hypotheses provided. Nevertheless, this is hard to find, as ideal evidence being only a concept.

In this project, the probabilistic interpretation of relevant forensic evidence investigated in criminal cases with the aid of Wigmore charts and Bayesian networks was proposed. Using …

Improving The Continuity Of Care For Opioid Use Disorder: Investigating Fentanyl Overdose Outcomes And Pharmacy-Level Buprenorphine Access, Lyn Yuen Choo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Opioid overdose (OD) deaths remain a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States (US) and approximately 76,516 drug OD deaths were predicted in the past year prior to April 2025. While previous research has focused on fatal opioid ODs, less is known about outcomes following non-fatal opioid ODs (NFOO) involving fentanyl. Patients who experienced a fentanyl OD may develop significant morbidity and inpatient mortality due to fentanyl’s high potency, rapid onset of action, and decreased response to naloxone. Research efforts to improve continuity of care for opioid use disorder (OUD) are highly needed to ensure appropriate follow-up care …

Shaping Occupational Self-Efficacy In Complex Jobs: Cognitive Flexibility, Role Stressors, And The Workplace, Carolyn Henn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Career advancement in many professions requires employees to move beyond a single specialized role and perform effectively across different responsibilities. These complex jobs often combine technical work, project oversight, client interaction, financial accountability, and coordination with others. Successfully managing these overlapping responsibilities requires strong occupational self-efficacy, but not much is known about the factors that shape employees’ confidence in their ability to perform in complex jobs, particularly under role stress. This study uses cross-sectional survey data from 132 full-time professionals working in complex, multi-role jobs across a range of industries to examine how cognitive flexibility, role stressors, and job demands …

Assessing Water Quality In Drinking Water Distribution Systems: Rural Infrastructure Challenges, Hydrodynamic Effects On Biofilms, And Biofilm Contribution To Disinfection By-Products Formation, Vinila Vasam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Access to clean and safe drinking water remains one of the most persistent public health and environmental challenges in the United States. Maintaining water quality after leaving the treatment plant in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) is a complicated and often overlooked challenge. Most research focuses on water treatment and source water quality, but not on the miles of pipe that follow. Aging infrastructure, complex flow patterns in the DWDS, and limited resources make water quality management especially difficult. This dissertation includes three core studies: 1) A system-level analysis of small and rural utilities in the geographically complex region of …

The Hidden Process Of Student Placements: Perspectives From Slp, Ot, And Pt Coordinators, Almara Jane Sidney Hutchinson Jan 2026

The Hidden Process Of Student Placements: Perspectives From Slp, Ot, And Pt Coordinators, Almara Jane Sidney Hutchinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This comparative multi-case study examined the unseen processes behind clinical placement planning in allied health education. Clinical placements are essential to preparing students in speech-language pathology (SLP), occupational therapy (OT), and physical therapy (PT); however, little research has explored how Directors and Coordinators of Clinical Education (DCE/CCEs) navigate the complex decision-making involved in planning these experiences. Guided by Greco and Myers’ (2024) framework conceptualizing placement planning as an interaction between process and experience, this study explored how coordinators described their planning processes and the role of student-centeredness within them.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 DCEs/CCEs representing SLP, OT, and …

Comparison Of The Biodiversity Of Culturable Yeast From Four Different Habitats, Frank V. Addeo Jan 2026

Comparison Of The Biodiversity Of Culturable Yeast From Four Different Habitats, Frank V. Addeo

All Master's Theses

Yeasts are ubiquitous unicellular fungi that play critical roles in decomposition, nutrient cycling, and fermentation processes across diverse ecosystems. Despite their ecological and biotechnological importance, the diversity and distribution of wild yeast populations in many temperate regions remain poorly characterized. This study evaluated how classifier thresholds influence species assignment and functional inference from internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) Sanger sequences of cultured yeasts collected from diverse habitats in central Washington. The project aimed to assess the stability of taxonomic calls across classifier settings and to illustrate how methodological decisions shape downstream ecological conclusions. Samples from each habitat were enriched under …

Context: Low energy availability (LEA) is associated with adverse health and performance outcomes in athletes and may be particularly concerning during adolescence when growth and bone development are ongoing. Although inadequate carbohydrate (CHO) intake has been proposed as a contributor to LEA, limited research has examined this relationship in adolescent endurance athletes. Objective: To examine dietary intake, bone mineral density (BMD), and eating disorder (ED) risk in adolescent distance runners with and without LEA. Methods: Eighteen adolescent distance runners (15.7 ± 1.2 years; …

Paleo-Environmental Change In Deer Lagoon, Whidbey Island Interpreted From Diatoms And Lithology, Lourdes Garcia Jan 2026

Paleo-Environmental Change In Deer Lagoon, Whidbey Island Interpreted From Diatoms And Lithology, Lourdes Garcia

All Master's Theses

Puget Sound is a densely populated, tectonically active area that can be affected by earthquakes from local crustal faults and the Cascadia subduction zone capable of producing abrupt coseismic subsidence. Tidal wetlands are particularly sensitive to abrupt changes because they are depositional environments that reside at sea-level and their lithology and ecological communities are strongly controlled by elevation within the tidal frame. As a result, coseismic subsidence can disrupt established environmental gradients and leave distinguishable signatures preserved within the stratigraphy, like tidal mud directly over peat deposits. These preserved records provide an opportunity to reconstruct past earthquakes and associated relative …

The West Fork Teanaway (WFT) River in Kittitas County, WA is an entrenched bedrock river channel with disturbed floodplain geomorphology and degraded riparian ecology. Two stream restoration approaches, “stage 0” valley bottom reset and engineered logjam installation, will be installed at the WFT in summer 2026 by collaborators at the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group. The objective of this study was to constrain the pre-restoration geomorphic and hydrologic conditions of the WFT. The WFT has an unconsolidated floodplain aquifer of predominantly coarse-grained fluvial deposits. Monitoring of groundwater and surface water levels began in …

Understanding The Cost Of Catastrophe: Wildfire Suppression Costs Drivers By Fire Size Class, Stephanie Overla Jan 2026

Understanding The Cost Of Catastrophe: Wildfire Suppression Costs Drivers By Fire Size Class, Stephanie Overla

All Master's Theses

While most wildfires burn less than 100 acres, the western United States experiences much larger fires annually, placing increasing pressure on suppression resources. Changes in weather patterns, fuel composition, and the spatial complexity of human development have rapidly altered historic fire regimes, increasing both the frequency of large wildfires and the challenges of managing them. This study compares two wildfire classes—Fires of Unusual Size (FOUS, >90,000 acres with at least one rapid growth event), and Large Fires (LF, 25,000–90,000 acres), —to identify differences in how size- and growth-based fire classes influence wildfire suppression costs. Suppression cost data for 60 …

Ultrasound-Derived Liver Composition And Metabolic Flexibility Under Exercise Stress, Rhodes Van Houten Jan 2026

Ultrasound-Derived Liver Composition And Metabolic Flexibility Under Exercise Stress, Rhodes Van Houten

All Master's Theses

Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) is characterized by abnormal liver fat accumulation in conjunction with metabolic syndromes. MAFLD affects 33% of individuals worldwide, though little is known about how increased liver fat impacts physiological responses to exercise. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between liver composition and metabolic flexibility during a graded exercise test.  Body composition was analyzed via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Liver ultrasound was evaluated for echogenicity, where elevated mean gray volume (MGV) indicates abnormal liver tissue. Rates of fat (FATox) and carbohydrate (CHOox) oxidation (g/min), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and blood lactate concentrations ([LA-], …

Examining The Effects Of Virtual Nature Exposure And Video Immersion On State Hope With Nature Relatedness As A Covariate, Zachary Arneson Jan 2026

Examining The Effects Of Virtual Nature Exposure And Video Immersion On State Hope With Nature Relatedness As A Covariate, Zachary Arneson

All Master's Theses

Previous work in the field of environmental psychology has shown that virtual nature exposure can produce many psychological benefits for the viewer. Within this literature, however, there has been no examination of the effects of virtual nature exposure on levels of state hope, a goal-directed positive psychological construct made up of two types of thought: agency and pathways. Additionally, there has been no direct examination of the effect of immersion level of the virtual nature exposure on psychological measures. To fill this gap in the literature, the current study examined the effects of virtual nature exposure and video immersion on …

All Master's Theses

Mount Baker is a very-high threat Cascade volcano and is located near densely populated areas in northern Washington, putting many at risk if an eruption were to occur. Schreibers Meadow cinder cone is located on the southern flank of Mount Baker and produced the Sulphur Creek (SC) tephra and lava 9.8 ka. Previous work on the SC eruption used petrology and geochemistry to reconstruct the pre-eruptive magmatic architecture beneath Mount Baker Volcanic Field, including olivine-hosted melt inclusions to determine crystallization pressures, as well as plagioclase- and clinopyroxene-derived diffusion timescales to determine magma storage timescales of several months and recharge-to-eruption timescales …

Gis Is A Tool, Not The Story: The Journey Towards An Ethnographically Informed Gis Analysis Of Frenchman Coulee, Eastern Washington, Joseph T. Gambino Jan 2026

Gis Is A Tool, Not The Story: The Journey Towards An Ethnographically Informed Gis Analysis Of Frenchman Coulee, Eastern Washington, Joseph T. Gambino

All Master's Theses

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have seen increased use in ethnographic and archaeological studies over the last several decades. Though revolutionary in their ability to predict and document sites of archaeological or cultural significance, they remain limited in their capacity to communicate the full extent of potential values certain geographies offer to both cultural specialists and their communities. These limitations are amplified when attempting to represent how the landscape is experienced within GIS’s statistical framework. In this manuscript I present different approaches to GIS modeling that attempt to identify some of the advantages Frenchman Coulee could have offered to the Indigenous …
