Study DesignRetrospective Cohort Study.ObjectivesTo evaluate clinical and patient reported outcomes between operative and non-operative management strategies for sacral U-type fractures.MethodsThis retrospective review included patients with sacral U-type fractures from a 12-year period at a Level 1 trauma center. Demographic, Modified 5-Item Frailty Index (mFI-5), complications, outcomes, and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) data were collected. Fractures were classified by the AO Spine Sacral Injury Classification System (AOSSIC) and analyzed by subtype and treatment modality (trans-sacral screw fixation (TSF) or lumbopelvic fixation (LPF) vs non-operative). Statistical significance was

The spinal cord plays a central role in the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of multiple sclerosis (MS), yet remains under-studied compared with the brain. This review summarizes key insights from the 2025 North American Imaging in MS Spinal Cord Imaging Workshop, highlighting recent advances, ongoing challenges, and future opportunities in MS spinal cord imaging. We review pathological studies and outline the clinical relevance of spinal cord lesions and atrophy for diagnosis, prognosis, and disease monitoring, highlighting emerging biomarkers of progression independent of relapse activity. Correlations between magnetic resonance imaging, histopathology, and clinical outcomes support the validation and translational potential of …

IMPORTANCE: Depression and anxiety are common among older adults undergoing surgery and are associated with adverse postoperative outcomes. However, effective tailored perioperative mental health interventions are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a perioperative intervention to optimize mental health.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A single-blind, hybrid, type 1, effectiveness-implementation randomized clinical trial was conducted (November 1, 2022, to March 31, 2025), with 3-month postoperative follow-up, at a US academic and community practice hospital network. Participants were 60 years or older; scheduled for cardiac, oncologic, or orthopedic surgery; and had clinically meaningful symptoms of depression and/or anxiety based on the Patient Health Questionnaire-Anxiety …

School of Art, Design and Architecture
1. Executive summaryWhat: This report is taken from a workshop: titled: Neighbourhoods and Data, held on May 8, 2026, Participants included a cross-sector representation of individuals from organisations that work with communities and across local and national datasets. It focused on emerging practices and needs around quantitative and qualitative data (Marsh, Ashton, and Owen, 2025), particularly regarding the Pride in Place Neighbourhood Boards that are being established in 2026, as well as the broader neighbourhood approach currently favoured in UK place-based policy (ICON, 2026). Who and how: The workshop aimed to understand the processes of understanding, defining, and measuring people’s …

Einstein Health Papers
BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly incorporated into hepatology research, yet few have been rigorously evaluated, particularly among patients with decompensated cirrhosis. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Hepatobiliary (FACT-Hep) captures multidimensional liver disease-specific burden, while the disease-agnostic PROMIS-29 assesses physical and mental health broadly. We evaluated the performance of FACT-Hep and its relationship to PROMIS-29 among participants with cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) enrolled in a prospective multicenter clinical trial.
METHODS: Baseline data were analyzed from 935 participants enrolled in the PAL LIVER trial. This study enrolled patients with Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) B/C cirrhosis and/or with HCC. Health-related quality of …

Journal of Youth Development
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced most schools across the U.S. to close and transition to remote learning. Families were forced to transform their homes into classrooms while facing challenges to their health, finances, and social connections. To better understand how young people experienced these changes, a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) project was employed to engage young people in naming, exploring, and sharing their experiences during this time. Nine high school youth leaders were trained as researchers to conduct interviews with their peers. These youth scholars were also trained on how to code, sort, and disseminate data and results. …

Journal of Youth Development
Youth leadership experiences have the power to shape individuals’ values, identities, and leadership behaviors well into adulthood, yet limited empirical research has examined how these formative experiences contribute to leadership development over time. This study examines the long-term impact of youth leadership experiences using the six-stage Leadership Identity Development (LID) model as a guiding and interpretive framework by exploring the journeys of alumni from the Shelton Challenge, a six-day immersive high school leadership program at NC State University rooted in values-based and positive youth development (PYD) principles. Using narrative inquiry, we conducted interviews and focus groups with 30 alumni ages …

4-H Program Staff Perceptions Of Including Youth With Disabilities, Brittney Muschetto, Amy Leman
Journal of Youth Development
This study’s focus is to examine 4-H youth development county program staff’s perceptions of the inclusion of youth with disabilities in the Illinois 4-H program. The majority of program staff identified positive perceptions about including youth with disabilities in 4-H. However, they also noted that there was a need for more staff training to adequately include youth with disabilities in 4-H programming. As more youth are being diagnosed with disabilities, 4-H must continue to improve its knowledge and skills to make 4-H inclusive to all youth.

A Billion People In The Shadows: Understanding Disability, Kelly Dziak
Journal of Youth Development
The disability community is the largest minority group and encompasses people of all ages and backgrounds. Despite its size, members of this community frequently encounter social, educational, and economic barriers that limit opportunities for full participation. Youth development programs have the potential to support skill-building and foster a sense of belonging. However, professionals often face challenges to effectively support individuals with disabilities including limited training and accessibility barriers. A Billion People in the Shadows: The Ultimate 1-Hour Guide to Understanding Disability by Doug McCullough provides practical guidance for improving understanding and support for this population. Drawing on personal experiences with …

A More Perfect Union: An Examination Of The Film, Salt Of The Earth, And The American Labor Movement, Amber Montgomery
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
This paper examines the film, Salt of the Earth, which is based on the actual events of the Mine-Mill strike that took place in Hanover, New Mexico, in 1949. The strike was organized by Mexican workers with the help of their wives. The fight was over workers’ rights, as well as their dignity. At the same time, another fight was taking place. The wives of these miners were also seeking equality within their marriages, serving as a parallel narrative to the strike. To understand the environment at this time, this paper will also analyze American politics during this period, …
A Primer Of Medical Device Regulation: How To Go From Reactive To Proactive To Better Protect Patient Safety, Sneha Dave, Rita F. Redberg
A Primer Of Medical Device Regulation: How To Go From Reactive To Proactive To Better Protect Patient Safety, Sneha Dave, Rita F. Redberg
Utah Law Review
FDA oversight of medical devices has too often been reactive, following preventable disasters rather than based on a proactive commitment to patient safety. The history of the device framework, the expansion of expedited pathways, weak postmarket surveillance, broad preemption, and conflicted patient advocacy together create a perfect storm of a regulatory environment that tolerates uncertainty and externalizes costs onto patients. Reforms such as time‑limited breakthrough status, mandatory and enforceable postmarket studies, requirements for more robust safety and efficacy data, and strengthened reporting duty for clinicians would move device regulation closer to FDA’s statutory mandate to protect public health. It would …

The Fda’S New Clinical Decision Support Software Guidance And Its Implications For Artificial Intelligence, Sara Gerke
Utah Law Review
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of more than 1,400 AI-based products classified as devices under Section 201(h)(1) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, many other AIbased products, including certain clinical decision support (CDS) software tools that provide recommendations to health care professionals about diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or condition, have been placed on the U.S. market without FDA premarket review. On January 6, 2026, the FDA issued a revised CDS Guidance, which superseded the September 28, 2022 CDS Guidance. Shortly after, the …
