Settlements Of Adhesion, Nicole Summers Jan 2026

Settlements Of Adhesion, Nicole Summers

University of Chicago Law Review

Eviction cases make up over a quarter of all cases filed in the federal and state civil courts and have enormous consequences for tenants, who are nearly always unrepresented by counsel. These cases overwhelmingly settle, yet settlement scholars have entirely overlooked eviction both empirically and theoretically. One of the core questions animating settlement scholarship—how do the parties negotiate settlement?— has never been asked or answered in the eviction context. This Article does so.

The Article presents results from the first empirical study of eviction settlement negotiations. The study involved rigorous analysis of an original dataset of over one thousand hand-coded …

The Impact Of Leadership Skills On Pbl Group Dynamics, Jaime W. Burke Hicks Jan 2026

The Impact Of Leadership Skills On Pbl Group Dynamics, Jaime W. Burke Hicks

Education Theses and Dissertations

This Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice examined the role of intentional leadership instruction in addressing persistent challenges in Project-Based Learning (PBL) group dynamics within a middle school setting. The Problem of Practice centered on students’ inconsistent demonstration of leadership behaviors, including communication and accountability, which limited the effectiveness of group work despite prior exposure to PBL structures. This study was conducted at a university-affiliated public charter school in East Texas, where PBL serves as a core instructional model.

Guided by an Improvement Science framework and structured through a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, this study employed a mixed-methods embedded design to evaluate …

Incarceration As Sexualized Violence, Leigh S. Goodmark Jan 2026

Incarceration As Sexualized Violence, Leigh S. Goodmark

Faculty Scholarship

Sexual violence—rape, sexual assault, strip and body cavity searches, surveillance, and reproductive abuse—is a regular occurrence in women’s prisons. Some of that violence is clearly illegal; some occupies a legally gray middle ground; and some is considered essential to the operation of the prison system. All of it, however, could violate the law if the victims were not incarcerated. Sexual violence is so pervasive within women’s prisons that incarceration can only be understood as a form of sexualized violence. Given the certainty that people incarcerated in women’s prisons will experience some form of sexual abuse, continued incarceration can only be …

Effect Of Endophytic Fungi On Thrips Tabaci Development And Population Dynamics, Ngoc Anh Vu, Sevgan Subramanian, Rainer Meyhöfer Jan 2026

Effect Of Endophytic Fungi On Thrips Tabaci Development And Population Dynamics, Ngoc Anh Vu, Sevgan Subramanian, Rainer Meyhöfer

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Endophytic fungi are promising biocontrol agents because they colonise healthy plant tissues asymptomatically while inducing systemic resistance that negatively affects herbivorous insects. We investigated whether treatments with the endophytes Trichoderma harzianum and Beauveria bassiana in two onion cultivars (Allium cepa L.; Sturon and Red Baron) induce plant responses that alter Thrips tabaci behaviour and population development. Under controlled conditions, seeds were treated with conidial suspensions and plants subsequently received foliar applications; plants were then exposed to T. tabaci for 72 h, 4 weeks, or 8 weeks in no-choice assays. Both endophytes reduced thrips host-plant preference: at 72 h post-exposure, inoculated …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Hard Coastal Protection Structures For Long-Term Erosion Mitigation, Case Study: Eastern Rosetta Shoreline, Nile Delta, Egypt, Basma Sayed, Ayman Sabry Koraim, Tarek Hemdan Nassrallah, Ahmed Abouelfetouh Abdelaziz, Nada Mansour, Fahmy Salah Fahmy Abdelhaleem Jan 2026

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Hard Coastal Protection Structures For Long-Term Erosion Mitigation, Case Study: Eastern Rosetta Shoreline, Nile Delta, Egypt, Basma Sayed, Ayman Sabry Koraim, Tarek Hemdan Nassrallah, Ahmed Abouelfetouh Abdelaziz, Nada Mansour, Fahmy Salah Fahmy Abdelhaleem

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Coastal erosion threatens densely populated shorelines worldwide. At the Rosetta Promontory (Nile Delta), shoreline retreat has accelerated since the construction of the Aswan High Dam due to reduced fluvial sediment supply. This case study numerically evaluates shoreline response to six hard-protection scenarios along the eastern promontory, combining groins and detached breakwaters, over a 20-year forecast (2022–2042). Offshore wave conditions were transformed to nearshore hydrodynamics using MIKE21 Spectral Wave, and long-term shoreline evolution was simulated with DHI-LITPACK. The numerical models were forced using a 40-year wave dataset derived from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis. Results indicate that the configuration with eight detached …

A Comparative Review Of Roller Compacted And Conventional Concrete: Performance, Economics, And Environmental Sustainability, Masood Abu-Bakr, Hersh F Mahmood, Soran Abdrahman Ahmad Jan 2026

A Comparative Review Of Roller Compacted And Conventional Concrete: Performance, Economics, And Environmental Sustainability, Masood Abu-Bakr, Hersh F Mahmood, Soran Abdrahman Ahmad

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC), distinguished by its zero-slump consistency and high density achieved through heavy roller compaction, has gained recognition as an effective alternative to conventional concrete in applications such as pavements, industrial flooring, and dam construction. This paper reviews the evolution, material composition, and common uses of RCC in comparison with Conventional Concrete (CC), emphasizing the advantages and limitations of each. Key performance aspects, including mechanical strength, durability, workability, construction efficiency, and maintenance demands, are examined. The findings indicate that RCC can reduce construction time by up to 25% and lower maintenance costs by approximately 30–40%. Additionally, life-cycle cost …

Existential Reasoning Within The Framework Of Multiple Intelligences, C. Branton Shearer Jan 2026

Existential Reasoning Within The Framework Of Multiple Intelligences, C. Branton Shearer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This article investigates the concept and construct validity of the proposed existential intelligence (Gardner, 1999). Thinking about fundamental existential issues such as death and the meaning of life is a valued human cognitive activity, but does this qualify as a distinct form of intelligence with coherence, structural integrity, measurability, and independence according to Gardner’s criteria? A more accurate framing for this construct may be existential reasoning—a type of cognition that seems likely to be a precursor to, subcomponent of, or parallel with the construct of wisdom. Data from the Scale for Existential Thinking (Allan & Shearer, 2012) are reviewed. …

Maslow’S Hammer: The Problem Of Scientism And The Philosophy Of Science In Maslow’S Later Work, Richard Grego Jan 2026

Maslow’S Hammer: The Problem Of Scientism And The Philosophy Of Science In Maslow’S Later Work, Richard Grego

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This paper examines how Abraham Maslow’s concern with the pervasive intellectual and cultural influence of scientism shaped his philosophy of science and anticipated contemporary discourse on the nature of scientism. Although he never articulated a thorough, formal, or systematic philosophy of science, Maslow’s conception of science’s nature and scope is evident through the course of his work, and it was shaped by his concern with the emerging influence of scientism. The prominent intellectual status science has enjoyed since the Enlightenment has made scientism a powerful influence on postmodern intellectual and popular culture that is currently the subject of a wide …

Correlates Of Truancy Among Somali High School Students In Minnesota, Aisha Abdi Jan 2026

Correlates Of Truancy Among Somali High School Students In Minnesota, Aisha Abdi

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Truancy remains a significant challenge in schools today. Somali high school students’ truancy is specifically more prevalent. There is limited research on cultural factors that correlate with absenteeism within this population, and this quantitative study examined these factors. Acculturation, student employment, religious commitment, and perceived discrimination were the four key factors examined to inform the study. The sampled population were 16 high school students in grades 9 to 12 from two high schools within the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota. The student participants completed the Stephenson Multigroup Acculturation Scale (SMAS), Child Perceived Discrimination Questionnaire (CPDQ), and researchers’ constructed surveys …

Characterization Of The Genetic Diversity Of Curlyleaf Pondweed (Potamogeton Crispus L.) In The Contiguous United States And Canada And Analysis Of Possible Hybrid Potamogeton Crispus Lineages, Mallory M. Kaiser Jan 2026

Characterization Of The Genetic Diversity Of Curlyleaf Pondweed (Potamogeton Crispus L.) In The Contiguous United States And Canada And Analysis Of Possible Hybrid Potamogeton Crispus Lineages, Mallory M. Kaiser

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Curlyleaf Pondweed (Potamogeton crispus L.) is a prolific invasive species that has spread across the United States and into parts of Canada since its introduction to North America in the 1840s. It causes extensive economic and environmental damage across its invasive range, and its control and eradication are of utmost importance to agricultural, ecological, recreational, and transportational stakeholders. Developments in molecular ecology and invasive management have found that genetic diversity and hybridization of aquatic macrophytes may affect their susceptibility to herbicide treatments, and genotype or lineage identification are important control variables that must be considered in field and …

The Second Minimum Size Of A Finite Subspace Partition, Esmeralda Năstase, Papa Sissokho Jan 2026

The Second Minimum Size Of A Finite Subspace Partition, Esmeralda Năstase, Papa Sissokho

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

Let V = V (d, q) denote the vector space of dimension d over Fq . A subspace partition P of V , also known as a vector space partition, is a collection of nonempty subspaces of V such that each nonzero vector of V is in exactly one subspace of P. Motivated by applications of minimum blocking sets and maximal partial t-spreads, Beutelspacher (Geom Dedic 9:425– 449, 1980) determined in a lemma the minimum possible size δ(d) over all (nontrivial) subspace partitions of V . In Heden et al. (Des Codes Cryptogr 64:265–274, 2012) and N˘astase …

Second And Fifth Graders’ Changes In Strategies For Integer Addition, Mahtob Aqazade, Laura Bofferding Jan 2026

Second And Fifth Graders’ Changes In Strategies For Integer Addition, Mahtob Aqazade, Laura Bofferding

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

Research on integer addition often attributes students’ performance to their grade level while ignoring the role of prior whole number knowledge in influencing their learning difficulties. To explore whether these difficulties are related to their grade level or persistence in using rules based on their whole-number experiences, we first paired three second-grade students with three fifth-grade students who had similar integer addition strategies on their pretest. Then, we compared their strategy changes and performance after small-group sessions and whole-class activities around integer addition (i.e., instructional intervention). Although all pairs gained from the pretest to posttest, one fifth grader still relied …

Connected Fair Detachments Of Hypergraphs I, Amin Bahmanian Jan 2026

Connected Fair Detachments Of Hypergraphs I, Amin Bahmanian

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

Let G be a hypergraph whose edges are colored. An (α, n)-detachment of G is a hypergraph obtained by splitting a vertex α into n vertices, say α1, . . . , αn , and sharing the incident edges among the subvertices. A detachment is fair if the degree of vertices and multiplicity of edges are shared as evenly as possible among the subvertices within the whole hypergraph as well as within each color class. In this paper we solve an open problem from the 1970s by finding necessary and sufficient conditions under which a k-edge-colored hypergraph …

Who Gets To Stay? Selective Compliance, Local Power, And The Politics In San Juan Capistrano, Daniel Fernández Jan 2026

Who Gets To Stay? Selective Compliance, Local Power, And The Politics In San Juan Capistrano, Daniel Fernández

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines how California cities can satisfy state housing mandates while systematically under producing affordable housing. Using San Juan Capistrano as a case study, it documents a pattern of selective compliance. That is, a formal planning obligations are met while local governance tools, place-based identity, and discretionary processes that consistently filter housing outcome towards market-rate development and away from lower-income production. The findings suggest that closing California's affordability gap requires enforcement tools capable of reaching beyond formal planning compliance to address the governance mechanisms that shape what actually gets built.

Staring Into The Void: What Absolute Nothingness Reveals About Existence, Anxiety, And Love, Jasper Datta Jan 2026

Staring Into The Void: What Absolute Nothingness Reveals About Existence, Anxiety, And Love, Jasper Datta

CMC Senior Theses

We use contrast to understand the characteristics of the world. Green is understood in contrast to the possibility of being red or blue, and your identity is understood against the possible background of being someone else. In the philosophy of Nishida Kitaro, he extends this approach to define a concept of absolute nothingness, the thing in contrast to which being itself can be understood. In Chapter I, this thesis reconstructs the argument for absolute nothingness, explains how it is situated in Nishida’s broad system, and explores how it entails a philosophical contradiction we ought to accept. I then move on …

The Economics Of The U.S. Student Loan Market And The Case For The Education Development Financial Institution, Ian Akers Jan 2026

The Economics Of The U.S. Student Loan Market And The Case For The Education Development Financial Institution, Ian Akers

CMC Senior Theses

The United States student loan market is shaped by a variety of market failures–credit constraints, positive externalities, behavioral frictions including myopia, debt aversion, and misperception–that together justify government intervention in the market. Yet the design of federal intervention is just as important as its existence. This thesis details the economic theory underpinning the market for student loans, evaluates three historical federal student loan programs (the Perkins Loan Program, the Federal Family Education Loan Program, and the Federal Direct Loan Program) through the lens of that theory. The thesis then proposes a novel institutional model as a targeted response to the …

Pillpetz: A Smarter Way To Encourage Medication Adherence In Children, John H. Begley Jan 2026

Pillpetz: A Smarter Way To Encourage Medication Adherence In Children, John H. Begley

CMC Senior Theses

Medication adherence is usually framed as a problem of patient behavior, but this thesis argues that it is equally a problem of design. Children who take daily medication face barriers that adults often do not: developing executive function, dependence on caregivers, shifting school and home routines, privacy concerns, and stigma around being perceived as different. The standard prescription bottle, by contrast, was designed primarily for dispensing efficiency, safety, and accidental ingestion prevention—not for sustained daily use by a developing child.

This thesis proposes PillPetz, a smart pill case and digital companion that uses routine, play, dose confirmation, and caregiver-connected support …

From Endowment To Extraction: Critical Mineral Governance And Supply-Chain Integration In The Arctic, Charles Bollwerk Jan 2026

From Endowment To Extraction: Critical Mineral Governance And Supply-Chain Integration In The Arctic, Charles Bollwerk

CMC Senior Theses

Annexing Greenland, making Canada the 51st State – what’s it all about? Critical minerals are often treated as a geological and national security problem that can be fixed through strength and coercion. This thesis argues that, in the Arctic, governance structures are what determine whether critical mineral wealth becomes strategically useful. Through a comparative qualitative analysis of Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Russia, and the Nordic countries, it examines what drives variation in critical mineral extraction and supply-chain integration across Arctic states, an especially relevant topic as Western states seek to reduce dependence on Chinese-controlled supply chains. The analysis applies four variables …

Revenge Of The Interceptors? The Dod, Congress, And The Return Of Space-Based Missile Defense During Trump 45, Chad Mcelroy Jan 2026

Revenge Of The Interceptors? The Dod, Congress, And The Return Of Space-Based Missile Defense During Trump 45, Chad Mcelroy

CMC Senior Theses

The initiation of the Golden Dome for America program has brought space-based missile defense (SBMD) to the forefront of American national security policy and rekindled debates that had laid dormant since the administration of President Ronald Reagan. How, forty-two years after President Reagan first proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative, did SBMD return as a national priority? In lieu of public information about the ongoing Golden Dome initiative, this thesis explores the first Trump administration, otherwise known as Trump 45, in order to analyze the development of SBMD proposals by its proponents in Congress and the Department of Defense. I used …

Algorithmic Trading In Idiosyncratic-Payoff Markets: A Multi-Agent System For On-Chain Prediction Contracts, Saif Aldeen A.K. Agha Jan 2026

Algorithmic Trading In Idiosyncratic-Payoff Markets: A Multi-Agent System For On-Chain Prediction Contracts, Saif Aldeen A.K. Agha

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis documents the design, deployment, and forward-test evaluation of an evolutionary multi-agent algorithmic trading system on Polymarket, the largest decentralized prediction market. The system pairs a locally-hosted 72-billion-parameter language model with a gradient-boosted statistical filter and an evolutionary selection mechanism that maintains a population of approximately 500 autonomous trading agents. Each agent generates a probability estimate for an event, compares it to the prevailing market price, and trades the resulting disagreement.

The central empirical exercise estimates a panel regression of trade-level profit on the absolute disagreement between the agent's probability estimate and the market price, controlling for agent identity, …

From Reconstruction To The Carceral State: Law, Labor, And Punishment In Black America, Nicolas S. Changbencharoen Jan 2026

From Reconstruction To The Carceral State: Law, Labor, And Punishment In Black America, Nicolas S. Changbencharoen

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the reconfiguration of racial and labor subordination in the United States from Reconstruction to the present, arguing that the legal abolition of slavery did not dismantle the economic and institutional structures on which it rested. It traces a continuous trajectory through which law and the criminal justice system were systematically weaponized to reconstitute slavery's essential functions under successive institutional forms, each serving as a deliberate mechanism for the extraction of Black labor in service of private and state interests. The analysis culminates in an examination of the modern carceral state, concluding that contemporary prison labor programs continue …

Interpretable Sample Uncertainty Measures For Ranked-Choice Election Polls, Jason Liang Jan 2026

Interpretable Sample Uncertainty Measures For Ranked-Choice Election Polls, Jason Liang

CMC Senior Theses

Polling results from traditional single-choice plurality elections are readily interpretable. Simple frequentist population parameters are estimated, including each candidate’s total support and the size of the front runner's lead. If the point estimate for the size of the front runner's lead exceeds the margin of error of the lead, we can conclude that the poll shows a statistically significant front runner. However, the interpretability of these population statistics disappears when applied to ranked-choice voting elections. Because ballots rank multiple candidates and candidates are eliminated in rounds, simple population-wide parameters are not well-defined. In RCV elections, a candidate’s ability to win …

Authoritarian Development & Political Economy Of East Asia: The Making Of South Korea’S Developmental Regime, Christopher J. Chung Jan 2026

Authoritarian Development & Political Economy Of East Asia: The Making Of South Korea’S Developmental Regime, Christopher J. Chung

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis investigates the historical evolution of South Korea's developmental trajectory during the Park Chung-hee era (1961-1979), a period that left an indelible mark on the country's political economy and industrial landscape. Rather than treating Park's regime as its own starting point, this thesis situates it within a longer historical arc beginning with Japanese colonial rule and continuing through Syngman Rhee's aid-dependent republic, arguing that Korea's developmental success was neither institutionally inevitable nor externally engineered, but the product of a historically specific and ideologically driven state-building project. Four primary questions guide this research: what historical conditions shaped the institutional landscape …

Mapping Ubiquitin-Cavitand Binding Interactions Using Ccpnmr Analysis, Mia J. Rhee Jan 2026

Mapping Ubiquitin-Cavitand Binding Interactions Using Ccpnmr Analysis, Mia J. Rhee

CMC Senior Theses

Ubiquitin is a highly conserved 76-residue protein central to proteasomal degradation, DNA repair, and immune regulation. Its dysfunction underlies neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, so it is important to understand how synthetic molecules recognize ubiquitin’s surface at residue level as it has implications for biosensor design and therapeutic targeting. This study performs a quantitative analysis of ubiquitin-cavitand binding interacting using four 1H-15N HSQC NMR titration spectra collected across increasing tetracarboxylate cavitand concentrations (apo, 1:15, 1:2, and 1:3 cavitand:ubiquitin). Using CCPNMR AnalysisAssign, all 73 non-proline backbone amide resonances were assigned against published BMRB reference shifts. The chemical shift perturbations (CSPs) were calculated at …

Exploration Of The Use Of Radiocarbon Time-Series Records As Indicators Of Upwelling Areas, Rena Reshmi Mukherjee Jan 2026

Exploration Of The Use Of Radiocarbon Time-Series Records As Indicators Of Upwelling Areas, Rena Reshmi Mukherjee

CMC Senior Theses

The Earth’s oceans buffer climate change, regulate weather patterns, sustain global food security, and support biomedical research. Ocean currents redistribute heat and nutrients while promoting genetic diversity, which can serve as a source of novel compounds for biomedical research. Understanding ocean circulation is essential for maintaining these ecosystem services as the climate continues to change. Upwelling, a form of vertical water movement that transports nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, plays a key role in marine productivity and carbon cycling. However, global upwelling patterns remain incompletely mapped. Radiocarbon (14C), a radioactive isotope of carbon, provides a useful tracer of ocean …

Revisionist Political Coalitions, Queering, And The Transmission Of Violence, Tom Y. Inouye Jan 2026

Revisionist Political Coalitions, Queering, And The Transmission Of Violence, Tom Y. Inouye

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the ways in which violent non-state actors (VNSAs), specifically revisionist political coalitions (RPCs), emerge from a state-centric international system that denies them access to formal avenues of political advocacy, legitimacy, and recognition. Challenging dominant portraits in international security that cast non-state-perpetrated violence as irrational or deviant, I argue that RPCs turn to brutality as a strategic response to exclusion produced by the Westphalian paradigm. Queer theory, particularly the concepts of legibility and strategic disidentification, is central to the reconceptualization of RPCs as “queered” political objects whose existence falls outside the normative boundaries of sovereignty and legitimacy.

Has The Introduction Of Express Lane Congestion Pricing Affected Residential Housing Prices In The Bay Area?, Francesco Argueta Jan 2026

Has The Introduction Of Express Lane Congestion Pricing Affected Residential Housing Prices In The Bay Area?, Francesco Argueta

CMC Senior Theses

This paper estimates the capitalization effect of express lane congestion pricing on residential property values in the San Francisco Bay Area, exploiting the staggered rollout of US-101 express lanes across two phases — Phase 1 (February 2022) and Phase 2 (March 2023) — alongside the single-phase opening of I-880 express lanes (October 2020). Using a two-way fixed effects difference-in-differences (DiD) design with continuous treatment intensity measured as inverse Euclidean distance to the nearest toll segment, I estimate log-linear specifications that yield percentage-interpretable capitalization effects robust to right-skew in Bay Area home values. The preferred log specification finds that neighborhoods in …
