Play For All: Financial And Legal Dilemmas In Proposing Adaptive Playgrounds, John J. Miller Dr., Jason W. Lee Jan 2026

Play For All: Financial And Legal Dilemmas In Proposing Adaptive Playgrounds, John J. Miller Dr., Jason W. Lee

The COSMA Journal

This case study examines the complexities of designing, funding, and legally complying with adaptive and inclusive playgrounds for children with disabilities. Inclusive playgrounds prioritize social integration by enabling children of all abilities to play together, while adaptive playgrounds focus on accommodating specific functional needs through specialized equipment. Both approaches support physical, cognitive, and social development and promote equitable community participation. Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), mandate accessibility in public and private recreational spaces, yet compliance alone does not guarantee meaningful inclusion. Additionally, funding remains a significant challenge, with full-scale adaptive playgrounds often costing hundreds …

Betting On Inclusion? The Ethical Dilemma Of Funding An Inclusive Playground, Jason W. Lee, John J. Miller Dr., Tasha Hyder

The COSMA Journal

This teaching case study provides an insightful exploration into multifaceted aspects of sport and recreation management. It narrates a fictionalized account enriched with real-life details, focusing on Rhonda Harper, a respected parks and recreation professional leading an initiative to fund an inclusive playground. While this endeavor has garnered support from local citizens, civic leaders, businesses, and children's advocates, raising the necessary $200,000 has proven to be challenging. A profound dilemma emerges when considering a potential $40,000 donation from a local gaming resort. Although this contribution could secure the needed funding for this initiative, it presents intricacies associated with the ethical …

What Does Nature Mean In The Abolition Of Man? Or, The Participatory Ontology Behind The Sublime Waterfall, Chris R. Armstrong Jan 2026

What Does Nature Mean In The Abolition Of Man? Or, The Participatory Ontology Behind The Sublime Waterfall, Chris R. Armstrong

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

If Lewis’s Abolition of Man is simply an argument for objective moral value, or what we have called “the natural law,” then why begin with waterfalls that demand of us certain kinds of aesthetic judgment,[1] and end by saying that technocrats who take Nature in their own hands to control others with it have stepped outside of something larger than moral law, viz. the Tao, the Real itself, and thereby lost their very humanity?[2]

What, that is, is Nature in the Abolition? Certainly, it is not nature as construed in philosophical naturalism after Jane Austen, after the advent …

Discovering C. S. Lewis’S Argument From Awe Against Philosophical Naturalism, Piotr Bylica Jan 2026

Discovering C. S. Lewis’S Argument From Awe Against Philosophical Naturalism, Piotr Bylica

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

Although Clive Staples Lewis’s (1898–1963) works on the intersection of philosophy and religion were aimed at a broader readership and are indeed well-known among the general public, they are also valued among professional philosophers and theologians alike, especially those focusing on the relations between theism, atheism, and naturalism. His three most popular arguments against naturalism are the Argument from Reason, the Moral Argument, and the Argument from Desire. In that context, the present article aims to show that Lewis actually made use of a fourth type of argument against philosophical naturalism that has so far escaped identification. Since this argument …

C. S. Lewis And Artificial Intelligence: An Ai Ethics Problem, Justin E. Edgerly Jan 2026

C. S. Lewis And Artificial Intelligence: An Ai Ethics Problem, Justin E. Edgerly

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

This paper demonstrates that the quest for safe and ethical AI is undermined by much of the philosophy, implicit and explicit, in AI literature and undergirding AI research and development. C. S. Lewis’s writings provide a prescient and penetrating critique of this philosophy and point toward a “regenerate science” that addresses the present need for wisdom in AI development. This paper contributes to the field of AI ethics by presenting several Lewisian concerns about the nature, application, and undergirding philosophy of current and future AI technologies, as well as a Lewisian perspective on the requirements for safe and ethical AI.

Re-Dating An Inklings Photograph, Harry Lee Poe Jan 2026

Re-Dating An Inklings Photograph, Harry Lee Poe

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

Perhaps the most delightful and helpful introductory biography of C. S. Lewis is Walter Hooper’s Through Joy and Beyond: A Pictorial Biography. Published in 1982, it was the first book I reviewed for an academic journal as a freshly minted PhD graduate. The lavish presence of photographs takes the reader into the world of Lewis from his earliest childhood until his death in 1963. Hooper probably knew more about Lewis and his works than any other person, but even Hooper had to make educated guesses from time to time, which very rarely proved wrong.

“Frankenstein’S Nursery Rhymes” And Other Unpublished Poems By Joy Davidman, Don W. King Jan 2026

“Frankenstein’S Nursery Rhymes” And Other Unpublished Poems By Joy Davidman, Don W. King

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

In 2015 I edited and published A Naked Tree: Joy Davidman’s Love Sonnets to C. S. Lewis and Other Poems. I avoided referring to this volume as the collected poems of Davidman since I decided to withhold publication of twenty-nine poems, primarily because I wanted the attention of readers to focus upon Davidman’s forty-five sonnets to Lewis as well as the poems comprising Letter to a Comrade, the only collection of her verse published during her lifetime. However, I now think it is time to bring these unpublished poems to print. With a few exceptions, I have arranged the poems …

Defensive Publications Series

Systems and methods can quantify user journey progression in digital advertising analytics, as some static, rule-based models may not capture the non-linear nature of certain user behaviors. The disclosed technology can utilize a data-driven framework with a sequential prediction model, such as an n-gram model, to analyze user interaction data. Raw user actions can be ingested and mapped to discrete symbols, or grams, which can then be formed into chronological sequences representing user journeys. The model can process these advertiser-specific sequences to compute a transition probability table that quantifies the likelihood of a user's next action based on their recent …

Generation Of Synthetic Photographs Via Video Synthesis And Heuristic Frame Selection, Mira Leung Jan 2026

Generation Of Synthetic Photographs Via Video Synthesis And Heuristic Frame Selection, Mira Leung

Defensive Publications Series

Generating novel synthetic photographs of locations can be challenging, as some generative techniques may introduce visual artifacts or compositional inconsistencies when creating new camera perspectives. The described systems and methods can address this by using two or more source images as input for a generative video synthesis model. The model can produce a short video that interpolates or extrapolates between the viewpoints of the source images, creating a set of new, spatially coherent camera angles. This generated video may then be deconstructed into a pool of candidate frames. A heuristic, such as a feature similarity score, can be used to …

Scientific Research In Geography In Morocco: Origins, Challenges And Perspectives, Anass Benichou, Said Abannay

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

Geographical research in Morocco plays a strategic role in understanding territorial transformations, urban expansion, rural migration, and climate-related challenges. Since the colonial period, the discipline has evolved from descriptive mapping to an applied science integrated within national universities. Moroccan geographers have contributed to sustainable resource management, urban planning, and major development projects, linking scientific knowledge with public policy. Despite these advances, the field faces structural, financial, and methodological constraints, limiting its international visibility and practical impact. The adoption of digital tools such as GIS, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence has enhanced predictive and analytical capacities. Future development depends on methodological …

How Do Women Maintain Access To Land In The Context Of Multiple Land Users In Contemporary Rural Tanzania?, Rose George Mbezi, Rosemarie Mwaipopo Jan 2026

How Do Women Maintain Access To Land In The Context Of Multiple Land Users In Contemporary Rural Tanzania?, Rose George Mbezi, Rosemarie Mwaipopo

Tanzania Journal of Sociology

Rural Tanzania is increasingly experiencing a growing heterogeneity of land users, driven by demographic shifts, socio-economic changes, and policy transformations, all of which influence women's ability to maintain secure access to land. Customary practices such as marriage, inheritance, and communal property access are now being practiced alongside statutory frameworks, including land policies and the transformation of communal land into private property, often influenced by economic investments and land acquisitions. Although legislative frameworks have been established to facilitate land access for both men and women, they remain insufficient, as women continue to face challenges in sustaining access to land amidst the …

Anthropological Perspectives On Epilepsy: Exploring Cultural Beliefs And Treatment Practices In Karagwe And Kyerwa Districts, Kagera, Tanzania, Straton Kakoko Ruhinda

Tanzania Journal of Sociology

This study investigates the cultural beliefs, perceived causes, and treatment practices associated with epilepsy in Karagwe and Kyerwa districts of Kagera Region, Tanzania, through an anthropological lens. Using a qualitative case study design, the research explores how traditional and biomedical systems interact in shaping health-seeking behaviors and treatment outcomes among people with epilepsy (PWE). Data were collected through in-depth interviews with PWE, caregivers, biomedical practitioners, and traditional healers, selected via purposive sampling. Thematic analysis revealed that while biomedical practitioners frame epilepsy as a neurological disorder treatable with anti-epileptic drugs, access to consistent care is hindered by structural limitations such as …
