Learning Management Systems As Anti-Convivial Tools, Edward Maclin Jan 2026

Learning Management Systems As Anti-Convivial Tools, Edward Maclin

Fast Capitalism

The last two decades have seen an increase in the number of online university classes operating under any of several commercial Learning Management Systems (LMS). Online classes expanded dramatically in the US during 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students, faculty, and administrators frequently assume that LMSs are epistemologically neutral. These LMSs are designed to do exactly what they say on the tin: they are systems for managing learning. At the same time, they function based on implicit understandings of "learning," "management," and "systems" that privilege some knowledges, interactions, and discourses while de-emphasizing others. In this paper I …

Deep-Rooted Images: Situating (Extra) Institutional Appropriations Of Deepfakes In The Us And India, Kailyn Slater, Akriti Rastogi Jan 2026

Deep-Rooted Images: Situating (Extra) Institutional Appropriations Of Deepfakes In The Us And India, Kailyn Slater, Akriti Rastogi

Fast Capitalism

The paper aims to map institutional and extra-institutional affordances and appropriations of deepfake images through an analytical framework that accounts for the socio-political contexts of the US and India. Our main argument involves the inevitable leakage of technologies outside institutions and its redressal through corporatized comebacks. Utilizing vernacular and global examples, we trace the perceived ownership and extended modalities of deepfake images and videos. While compositing (Manovich 2006) and habitual media (Chun 2016) predetermine our deep mediatized world (Hepp 2019), deepfakes, as a visual cultural technology newly popular within the political economy of media, offer a novel entry point into …

Populism And Identity Politics In The U.S. Heartland, Ann M. Oberhauser, Daniel Krier Jan 2026

Populism And Identity Politics In The U.S. Heartland, Ann M. Oberhauser, Daniel Krier

Fast Capitalism

The rise of populism on the political right in the U.S. and Europe in recent decades reflects a significant shift in political culture. This populism has been associated with the rejection of mainstream politics and increased hostility toward immigrants, racialized minorities, and other marginalized groups who are seen as threats to economic security and hegemonic social identities. In the U.S. Heartland, several key states flipped from Democrat to Republican in 2016, sealing Trump's win and leading to widespread debates about populist political attitudes in this region. This analysis draws from focus group discussions with community leaders in rural and micropolitan …

The Manosphere As An Online Protection Racket: How The Red Pill Monetizes Male Need For Security In Modern Society, Eva Bujalka, Tim Rich, Stuart Bender

Fast Capitalism

To effectively manage, empathize with and respond to the implications and impact of the so-called ‘Manosphere,' this paper is centered on the premise that researchers require an understanding of the draw factors that lead individuals to engage, affiliate with, and contribute to the various groups that constitute this wider movement. This paper seeks to contribute to the growing body of knowledge around the Manosphere by exploring how thought leaders propagate symbiotic cycles of ontological security and insecurity through YouTube in a manner that resembles a protection racket. It argues that these constructed ontological security cycles provide a powerful impetus to …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Tio₂@Zn₂Sno₄ Composite As A Novel Uv Filter With Reduced Photocatalytic Activity And Low Toxicity For Sunscreen Applications, Rusul Kadhim Naser, Kadhim Al-Attafi, Muntadher Abdulsalam A.Al.Alrabeeah Jan 2026

Synthesis And Characterization Of Tio₂@Zn₂Sno₄ Composite As A Novel Uv Filter With Reduced Photocatalytic Activity And Low Toxicity For Sunscreen Applications, Rusul Kadhim Naser, Kadhim Al-Attafi, Muntadher Abdulsalam A.Al.Alrabeeah

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

This study builds upon our recent investigation, which utilized various morphologies and particle sizes of Zn₂SnO₄ and TiO₂. Zn₂SnO₄ can block UVB and part of UVA and shows much less photocatalytic activity than TiO₂. Herein, the current study aims to reduce the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂, a compound often utilized as an ultraviolet (UV) filter in sunscreen, by incorporating Zn₂SnO₄ as a composite. Since Zn₂SnO₄ produces much fewer free radicals, in terms of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), due to its low photocatalytic activity. To overcome or minimize the high photocatalytic activity of TiO₂, composite materials TiO₂@Zn₂SnO₄ …

Oral Streptococcus And Vitamin B12 Deficiency In E-Cigarette Users: A Microbial–Nutrient–Neurotransmitter Axis Linking To Mood Disturbances, Maryam Sabah Naser, Ali Jabbar Abd Al-Hussain Alkawaz, Ali Abbas Hashim Almusawi, Ali Jalil Obaid, Hasanain Ayed Mohammed Al-Khafaji, Reihaneh Sabbaghzadeh

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Background: With the rising popularity of e-cigarettes, questions have emerged regarding their broader influence on oral ecology, nutrient absorption, and psychological health. Disruptions in the oral microbiome may alter vitamin B12 dynamics. This, in turn, may indirectly influence serotonin biosynthesis and mood regulation.

Methods: An observational cross-sectional study involved 150 young adults segregated into groups of 50 each as vapers, smokers, or non-users. Streptococcus sanguinis and vitamin B12 metabolism-related variable statuses methylmalonic acid and holotranscobalamin were quantified in samples, along with inflammatory markers interleukin-6, kynurenine/tryptophan ratio, and serotonin. Statistical techniques, including ANOVA and the Kruskal-Walli’s test, correlation, and serial mediation …

The Claustropolitan Society: A Critical Perspective On The Impact Of Digital Technologies And The Lockdown Imaginary, Tara Brabazon, Stefan Lawrence Jan 2026

The Claustropolitan Society: A Critical Perspective On The Impact Of Digital Technologies And The Lockdown Imaginary, Tara Brabazon, Stefan Lawrence

Fast Capitalism

The imperative of this article is to develop the trope of the ‘lockdown imaginary.’ To enact this project, a diverse array of theories and theorist are summoned, including the tropes and trajectories from Jean Baudrillard, Benedict Anderson, and Steve Redhead. This – seemingly – odd intellectual combination is both timely and appropriate. It is necessary – as with the Matryoshka Dolls – to commence with a theorization of hyperreality, then we crack open the concept to reveal theories of the imagined and imagining, concluding with the smallest and most brutalizing theoretical Dolls: claustropolitanism and foreclosure. From here, a (post) pandemic …

Fediverse’S Evolution From The Cultural-Historical Activity Theory, José Manuel Meza-Cano, Edith González-Santiago Jan 2026

Fediverse’S Evolution From The Cultural-Historical Activity Theory, José Manuel Meza-Cano, Edith González-Santiago

Fast Capitalism

This paper begins by mentioning some problems we found in social networks belonging to corporations such as Facebook and Twitter, emphasizing the inclusion of algorithmic timelines, the verticality of decisions that respond to market logic, and the privacy of users’ data. This research gives rise to presenting open-source social networks as a democratic and safer alternative for their users. These social networks shape the Fediverse, the result of the union of the words Federation- Universe, and whose history and evolution we describe. We expose the main postulates of the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) for using this theory to conduct the …

Flip This Library Again! A Metaphorphosis: Evolving The School Library Into An Innovation Lab & Library Learning Commons (Illc), David Vickers Loertscher, Fran Kompar Jan 2026

Flip This Library Again! A Metaphorphosis: Evolving The School Library Into An Innovation Lab & Library Learning Commons (Illc), David Vickers Loertscher, Fran Kompar

Learning Hub

Drawing on significant reform education voices, the authors propose that credentialed school librarians add to their various library or learning commons services an innovation laboratory. Like a true laboratory, this includes physical and virtual space tests of major ideas, learning strategies and initiatives by administrators, teachers, and students as a major collaborative effort of the credentialed librarian. Such real world experiments happen in the spirit of a try before you buy strategy where some ideas will succeed, fail, or need modification before going viral in the school. It also places the library at the center of teaching and learning in …

Migrant Domestic Workers As Disposable Kin In Global Capitalism's Care Economy, Miguel Ceron Becerra Jan 2026

Migrant Domestic Workers As Disposable Kin In Global Capitalism's Care Economy, Miguel Ceron Becerra

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the economic, emotional, and relational harms suffered by migrant domestic workers under global capitalism. These harms are systemic, stemming from labor and migration regimes designed to sustain capital accumulation in the care economy. Affluent regions benefit from the labor of migrant domestic workers at the expense of damage to their fundamental relationships. The result is the erosion of workers' kinship ties, rendering them "disposable kin" in the eyes of those who profit economically and emotionally from their work. The study is organized into four chapters. The first explores how global care chains are structured through labor and …

Vital Environs: Ecologies Of Modernism And The Nature Tradition, Danielle Nasenbeny Jan 2026

Vital Environs: Ecologies Of Modernism And The Nature Tradition, Danielle Nasenbeny

Dissertations

Vital Environs: Ecologies of Modernism and the Nature Tradition is an investigation of late nineteenth and early twentieth century British literature that explores the space between the individual and the external world. The project begins by exploring the “mind-body problem,” which is a topic in philosophy that recognizes the difficulty in understanding how the mind emerges from physical matter. While this topic has been in discussion since at least Descartes, science is still making crucial discoveries that challenge our understanding of this connection. I argue that the environmental crisis we find ourselves in today is a mind-body problem of global …

“I Like My Eighteenth Century Fresh”: Geofence Warrants, General Warrants, And The Evolving Fourth Amendment, Alexa M. Mascaró Jan 2026

“I Like My Eighteenth Century Fresh”: Geofence Warrants, General Warrants, And The Evolving Fourth Amendment, Alexa M. Mascaró

University of Miami Law Review

Almost 250 years ago, our Founding Fathers fought to create a nation free from the confines of British imperial rule. Outrage over governmental intrusions enabled by suspicionless general warrants and writs of assistance galvanized an American polity determined to prevent the abuses that had come to define colonial life. The Fourth Amendment was enacted as a response to executive overreach, and it was deeply informed by the fraught history that led to its adoption—a history that is still used by courts today to define constitutional protections.

In the digital age, the rapid speed of technological innovation has created a precarious …

Improving The Retention Rate In The Introductory Programming Courses At Georgia Southwestern State University, Karen S. Cook, Sai K. Mukkavilli, Satyaki Nan Jan 2026

Improving The Retention Rate In The Introductory Programming Courses At Georgia Southwestern State University, Karen S. Cook, Sai K. Mukkavilli, Satyaki Nan

Perspectives In Learning

Post COVID, the incoming students in CS and IT programs have seen a significant increase in the fail, withdrawal rate. Though some of it is associated with the lack of classes and changes in modalities during COVID and the initial years that followed, most of it is due to the lack of proper foundation after high school and before introducing the programming courses. In this paper we identify the major reasons for the low retention rate and how it can be mitigated by introducing a logic course in the curriculum.

Mulching And Time Of Planting Impact On Southern Blight Disease And Industrial Hemp Production, Sai Suvidh Maddela, Emmanuel C. Omondi, Margaret T. Mmbaga, Anand Kumar, Mitchell Dale Richmond, Philip O. Hinson, Bharat Pokharel Jan 2026

Mulching And Time Of Planting Impact On Southern Blight Disease And Industrial Hemp Production, Sai Suvidh Maddela, Emmanuel C. Omondi, Margaret T. Mmbaga, Anand Kumar, Mitchell Dale Richmond, Philip O. Hinson, Bharat Pokharel

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Southern blight, a disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Sclerotium rolfsii (S. rolfsii), is favored by the hot and humid conditions of the southeastern United States, posing a significant challenge to hemp production in Tennessee. Black plastic mulch (BPM), commonly used for weed control, can exacerbate the disease. There is limited information on the effects of straw mulch (SM), known to moderate soil temperatures and moisture, or planting time in disease management. Field studies were conducted in 2022 and 2023 at Tennessee State University to evaluate the effects of planting time, mulch type, and biofungicide application on disease severity, weed …

Justice Compromised: How Systemic Corruption Hinders Colombia's Victims' Law (Law 1448), Abigail Zislis Jan 2026

Justice Compromised: How Systemic Corruption Hinders Colombia's Victims' Law (Law 1448), Abigail Zislis

Fordham International Law Journal

In 2011, Colombia enacted Law 1448 of Victims and Land Restitution providing restitution and reparations to victims of the civil armed conflict in an ambitious reconciliation and transitional justice effort at reform. The successes and the limitations of this legislation and its implementation serve as a vehicle through which public corruption—as well as anti-corruption strategies—in Colombia can be understood. This paper argues that fundamental changes must be made to the existing system by creating stronger accountability mechanisms for the effective enactment of the legislative program.

This analysis is highly relevant to understanding modern armed conflicts and their aftermath. Understanding the …

The Comstock Act: Will The First Amendment Finally Bury This Zombie Law’S Speech Restrictions?, Morgan Garces Jan 2026

The Comstock Act: Will The First Amendment Finally Bury This Zombie Law’S Speech Restrictions?, Morgan Garces

University of Miami Law Review

The Comstock Act of 1873 is a federal anti-obscenity law that, along with lascivious and filthy literature, explicitly restricts the sending of anything that can be used to procure an abortion—including writing. However, since the decision of Roe v. Wade, the law’s abortion-speech provisions had been considered long-dead—although never officially being overturned. Now that Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has rescinded the right to an abortion, the law appears to be reaching out from its grave. Anti-abortion activists are currently looking to the Comstock Act as a federal abortion ban already on the books because of its ban …
