Effect Of Carbonization On The Mechanical Properties Of Mild Steel Utilizing Oak Charcoal As A Carbon Source, Omer Mahmood Mar 2026

Effect Of Carbonization On The Mechanical Properties Of Mild Steel Utilizing Oak Charcoal As A Carbon Source, Omer Mahmood

Engineering and Technology Journal

Carburizing is a process that improves the mechanical properties of low-carbon steel, particularly its surface hardness. Introducing carbon into the steel's surface enhances the creation of a durable and resistant outer layer.  The technique is especially useful for low-carbon steel because it cannot be hardened by quenching and tempering. This work investigates the effects of solid carburizing on the mechanical properties of mild steel. Oak charcoal was used as a carbon source due to its local availability and low cost. The study examined how solid carburization affects the microstructure and mechanical characteristics of mild steel. Mild steel samples were carburized …

Engineering and Technology Journal

The rapid growth in wireless telecommunication systems has spurred a strong interest in lightweight, compact, and cost-effective materials. One promising solution for achieving these characteristics is using polymer matrix ceramic-reinforced composites. In this context, complex oxide materials, specifically Zn1-xCuxWO4 (where x=0 and x=0.03), were used to reinforce three different polymer matrices: epoxy, polyurethane, and silicone rubber. The primary objective was to create composites with low loss factors and high dielectric constants, essential qualities for telecommunications systems. To create the complex oxides, the solid-state reaction method was employed. In particular, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that Zn0.97Cu0.03WO4 exhibited a monoclinic …

Manufacturing Of Sustainable Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Using Response Surface Methods, Abbas Mohammed, Maan Hassan, Hussein Al-Quraishi

Engineering and Technology Journal

Quartz powder is used in ultra-high-performance concrete to improve granular packing, but repeated inhalation during manufacture can cause health issues. The mechanical properties of UHPC are influenced by the post-setting curing method. A hypothesis suggests limestone powder could be a viable filler to mitigate these issues under three different curing regimes, replacing quartz powder of similar size. The study assessed 18 mixtures with different w/b ratios for flow characteristics and compressive strength after 7 and 28 days of curing under various conditions. Limestone powder positively impacted compressive strength and had fresh properties. A two-factor interaction model accurately correlated variables and …

Solving Westergaard Half-Space Problems Using Potential Theory, Charles Ike Mar 2026

Solving Westergaard Half-Space Problems Using Potential Theory, Charles Ike

Engineering and Technology Journal

The Westergaard half-space problem has been solved using the potential theory in this work. It is a classical theme in elasticity theory that seeks to find the displacements and stresses in the half-space caused by known boundary loads. It has important applications in analyzing stresses and displacement fields in soil due to applied points and distributed loads on the boundary caused by structures placed on the soil. It is governed by stress–strain, strain-displacement, and equilibrium equations. Horizontal inextensibility is assumed in developing the problem, simplifying the displacement formulation to a three-dimensional (3D) Laplace equation. The potential theory is applied to …

Carbon Fiber Cloth Performance Improvement Via Hybrid Materials (Fe2o3, Feco2o4, And Conducting Polymer) Addition For Energy Storage Applications, Abeer Radhi, Sami Jafar Al-Rubaiey, Shaymaa Al-Rubaye

Engineering and Technology Journal

Carbon fiber cloths (CFCs) are essential materials extensively studied and utilized in numerous applications, including supercapacitors (SCs), batteries, solar cells, and catalysis. CFC is gaining significant research attention as an inexpensive choice for (SC) electrode materials, mainly owing to its peculiar adaptability, which makes it suitable for conveyable or flexible devices. In fact, this characteristic is not easily attainable with other carbon-based matrices. However, bare CFC electrodes face difficulties concerning their capacitive performance because of numerous factors, including markedly little surface space, poor electrochemical efficacy, and limited porousness. In this way, these factors reduce their efficiency as supercapacitor electrodes. To …
