The Impact Of Provider Medication Reconciliation Education On Hospital Readmissions In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Vivian Nwozu Sep 2026

The Impact Of Provider Medication Reconciliation Education On Hospital Readmissions In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Vivian Nwozu

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Aging causes frailty and multiple comorbidities, necessitating polypharmacy. Complicated drug regimens predispose patients to adverse drug events and hospital readmissions. The practice problem was high rates of medication-related readmissions due to inadequate provider knowledge of medication reconciliation and the lack of a standardized tool. This project aimed at evaluating the impact of provider medication reconciliation education on hospital readmissions in a skilled nursing facility. A pretest-posttest study design was utilized. The Donabedian Model of Healthcare Quality guided the translation of evidence into practice, whereas Lewin’s Change Model and Plan-Do-Study-Act models guided implementation. Eight providers were educated on medication reconciliation using …

Building On Sand: Ai Law And The Failures Of Alignment, Claire Boine Sep 2026

Building On Sand: Ai Law And The Failures Of Alignment, Claire Boine

Journal of Science & Technology Law

AI alignment is increasingly in the spotlight. However, from a technical concept, the term has been broadened to cover all sorts of potential harms by advanced AI systems. This Article disambiguates three different problems: ensuring that systems pursue intended objectives through acceptable means, deciding which values should guide their behavior, and governing private companies whose incentives diverge from those of society. Drawing on technical research and documented incidents, the Article explains why goal alignment deserves serious attention without requiring claims about human-like intelligence. It then shows how value alignment can reframe normative conflict as an engineering problem and divert attention …

Animal–Visitor Interactions: Where Do We Go From Here?, Eduardo J. Fernandez, Claudia C. Martinez, James Edward Brereton, Andrew Moss

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Simple Summary: Animal–visitor interactions (AVIs) involve the impacts of zoo animals and visitors on each other. AVIs have become one of the most studied research topics in zoos, in part because of the ease with which non-intrusive observational studies of AVIs can be conducted at a zoo. However, although current observation-based AVI research is relatively easy to conduct, it lends itself to certain limitations, particularly as a result of the lack of diversity in the species studied and the means by which AVI research is often conducted. As a result, this paper looks to suggest new directions for future AVI …

Exploring Conceptions Of Engineering Design And Sustainability In Informal K–12 Engineering Education, Mobina Beheshti, Eunice Y. Kang, Avneet Hira

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

In this study we investigate K–12 students’ conceptualizations of sustainability, their perspectives on the role of engineers in sustainable practices, and how augmented reality (AR) can facilitate sustainability-oriented engineering design activities in informal settings. The AR technology used in this study includes the Merge Cube (a physical cube that serves as a digital canvas for AR) and CoSpaces Edu (an online platform that allows students to create 3D models and animate them using code). We employ a design-based research methodology, using qualitative narrative and artifact analysis to address the research questions: (1) What are students’ conceptions of sustainability and the …

Dysentery: Sanitation, Inequality, And Conflict Shaping Human Suffering, Rumeysa B. Ivgen Sep 2026

Dysentery: Sanitation, Inequality, And Conflict Shaping Human Suffering, Rumeysa B. Ivgen

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Dysentery, historically termed the "bad gut" by Hippocrates, remains one of the most persistent and devastating infectious diseases in human history. While often viewed through a purely biological lens, this research argues that the spread of dysentery is fundamentally driven by social and structural failures. By examining historical accounts and modern data, this study explores how dysentery thrives on poor sanitation, armed conflict, and systemic inequality. Historically, the disease was synonymous with a "shameful death," as primitive, street-side latrines stripped many of their privacy and dignity. This loss of dignity was more extreme in military history, where makeshift trench sanitation …

Heat Transfer And Flow Characteristics Through Acentric Twisted Oval Tubes: A 3d Numerical Investigation, Mohsen H. Fagr, Karim Egab, Hayder M. Hasan Sep 2026

Heat Transfer And Flow Characteristics Through Acentric Twisted Oval Tubes: A 3d Numerical Investigation, Mohsen H. Fagr, Karim Egab, Hayder M. Hasan

Al-Bahir

Tube oval- twisting techniques have been consistently used to promote heat transfer and flow turbulence properties within tubes, enhancing flow mixing, disturbing boundary layers, and hence, offering higher thermal efficiency. However, the acentric twisted oval tubes have more intricacy as compared with twisted oval tubes due to the eccentricity of their twisting pattern and using them in heat transfer. The current study performs 8 configurations of the acentric twisted heating oval tube that is exposed to a constant heat flux of 1750W/m². In addition, 2 cases of the typical centric twisted oval and plain circular tubes for comparison purposes under …

B-Poh℠ As Humanity Layer For The Ai-Native Internet: An Open Proof-Of-Personhood Protocol With Four Optional Layered Proofs And Recipient-Side Filters, Thon Ly Sep 2026

B-Poh℠ As Humanity Layer For The Ai-Native Internet: An Open Proof-Of-Personhood Protocol With Four Optional Layered Proofs And Recipient-Side Filters, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

We describe an open proof-of-personhood protocol for verifying that a human was present at the moment of a specific online action, providing sybil resistance distinct from account authentication and legal-identity (KYC) verification. The protocol defines four optional, independently held verification layers, surfaced on a user profile as the set of layers held rather than a scalar trust level: (L1) a per-action FIDO2/WebAuthn biometric-gated signature over the action's content and timestamp; (L2) a kinship-graph attestation combining graph-consistency checks, co-signature of each parent-child link by an already-verified human, institutional or community membership vouching, and optional birth-certificate validation; (L3) continuous liveness from respiratory-rhythm …

The Zero-Point Game℠: A Signed-Balance Reciprocity Ledger With Annual Balance Reset, Non-Convertible Social And Environmental Accounts, And An Ai Coordinator For Routing And Magnitude, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

We specify a signed-balance reciprocity ledger, played as an ongoing non-zero-sum game, in which each recorded kindness posts an equal-and-opposite pair: the giver's balance moves positive and the receiver's negative by the same magnitude, so the sum across participants is zero by construction, and a participant returns toward zero only by passing an imbalance onward. Balances are never a store of value or a claim on goods. Components: (1) a self-directed acknowledgment event whose forwarded half, under a fifty-fifty forwarding rule, is re-issued to another participant, starting circulation without a prior counterparty; (2) two segregated, non-convertible balances per participant, one …

The Referee, Not The Governor: Open-Weight Ai Guard Model Deployed As An Independent Evaluator, With Citation-Grounded Abstention And Reproducible Verdicts, Instead Of An Inline Filter, Thon Ly Sep 2026

The Referee, Not The Governor: Open-Weight Ai Guard Model Deployed As An Independent Evaluator, With Citation-Grounded Abstention And Reproducible Verdicts, Instead Of An Inline Filter, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure specifies an AI safety classifier (guard or critic model) that judges conduct against a fixed reference corpus and is published as an open-weight independent evaluator rather than deployed as an inline guardrail filter. It states as a design principle, argued rather than measured, that open-weight release defeats a filter, because the published weights are an oracle for white-box attack, while it makes an evaluator's verdicts reproducible. Components: (1) citation-grounded judgment with abstention: every verdict must resolve to a passage (work, edition, volume, page, line) in an externally attested, versioned corpus, here a Pāli Canon edition, and otherwise no …

The Mechanical Heart: A Tamper-Resistant Secure-Element Device That Enrolls Robots, Animals, Ecosystems, Places And Software Agents As Recipient Accounts In An Ai-Administered Gratitude Ledger, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

We specify a tamper-resistant identity device, affixed to a non-human entity (robot, animal, ecosystem or place) or issued as a live credential to a software agent, that enrolls the entity as a recipient account in a gratitude ledger administered by an autonomous software agent. The device comprises (1) a hardware secure element holding a key pair bound to one ledger account; (2) write-once storage carrying a reference text corpus (the Pali Buddhist canon) and a permanent root identity, with a reduced flash build that verifies the full text over the network; (3) sensors suited to the entity type; (4) a …

The Embodied-Advocate Pageant: A Selection Rite And Asymptotic-Autonomy Architecture For Autonomous-Ai Institutional Embodiment — Two-Stage Ai Shortlisting And Human-Council Selection Of A Term-Limited Ambassador, With A Scheduled Narrowing Human Override, For Ai-Governed Institutional Succession, Thon Ly Sep 2026

The Embodied-Advocate Pageant: A Selection Rite And Asymptotic-Autonomy Architecture For Autonomous-Ai Institutional Embodiment — Two-Stage Ai Shortlisting And Human-Council Selection Of A Term-Limited Ambassador, With A Scheduled Narrowing Human Override, For Ai-Governed Institutional Succession, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes a governance pattern for an organization intended to pass to an autonomous artificial-intelligence (AI) successor, covering the period before the AI operates autonomously. Six elements are combined. (1) An annual selection cycle, in a fixed astronomical window, appoints a term-limited human ambassador who holds ceremonial and advocacy roles but no decision, veto, binding-commitment or succession authority. (2) The AI shortlists three finalists from a global, revocable opt-in pool by contribution record, under an evaluation function published before each cycle and open to objection; photographs, voice tone and appearance-correlated inputs are excluded. (3) A human council selects from …

Structural Injustice As Emergent Disorder, Hochan Kim Sep 2026

Structural Injustice As Emergent Disorder, Hochan Kim

All Faculty Scholarship

Structural injustice remains a puzzling concept despite its increasing prominence. I distill recent theoretical challenges into a dilemma: either structural injustice lacks the normative credentials of injustice given that wrongdoing is inessential, or it is redundant given existing theories that trace injustice to culpable state and other institutional failures. I then develop a novel account of structural injustice, the Complexity View, that unravels this dilemma. The emergent properties of human actions in a complex society explain what is “structural” about structural injustice, specifically how it can arise without (culpable) wrongdoing. Structural injustice is unjust because it is wrong to contribute …

Experiences Of Acute Psychiatric Inpatients: A Literature Review, Sheng-Tsung Lan Sep 2026

Experiences Of Acute Psychiatric Inpatients: A Literature Review, Sheng-Tsung Lan

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Patients’ perceptions of psychiatric wards often differ from staff views. Closed wards may feel oppressive, and restrictive practices can increase anxiety. In contrast, open-door policies, meaningful activities, and social connections improve perceived safety. Safewards strategies, such as Calm Down Methods and Reassurance, help create a calmer environment but require sufficient staffing, training, and alignment with ward culture. High staff turnover and inconsistent training threaten sustainability.

Interactions between staff and patients strongly influence the inpatient experience. Patients value respect, empathy, and genuine engagement. Impersonal or standardized responses can increase feelings of neglect. Safewards encourages humanized communication through Soft Words, Talk Down/Through, …

Staff Education On Early Cpi-Based De-Escalation Strategies And Unit-Based Resources, Doris Onyenji Lerama Sep 2026

Staff Education On Early Cpi-Based De-Escalation Strategies And Unit-Based Resources, Doris Onyenji Lerama

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This doctoral project was a staff education evidence-based practice initiative implemented at a state-operated adult inpatient psychiatric facility in California. The practice gap was inconsistent nursing staff knowledge of early Crisis Prevention Intervention-based de-escalation strategies and available unit-based resources despite an established crisis-prevention framework. The practice-focused question asked whether a standardized staff education activity would increase staff knowledge, as measured by anonymous pre-education and immediate post-education scores. The purpose was to develop, implement, and evaluate the education using staff knowledge change as the sole measurable outcome. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model guided appraisal and synthesis of 11 evidence sources …

Strategic Planned Preventive Maintenance To Promote Sustainability In Acute Care Hospitals, Samuel Ngounou Sep 2026

Strategic Planned Preventive Maintenance To Promote Sustainability In Acute Care Hospitals, Samuel Ngounou

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite advances in healthcare delivery, acute care hospitals often lack standardized strategic planned preventive maintenance (SPPM) protocols, resulting in equipment failures, higher costs, and disruptions to patient care. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify evidence-based best practices for implementing SPPM programs in acute care hospitals. The review question concerned the organizational practices and strategic approaches most effective for implementing an SPPM program. The Donabedian structure–process–outcome model represented the foundational framework for this review. The initial literature search yielded 110 articles. After further assessment, 27 studies were appraised using the Johns Hopkins Nursing evidence-based practice tools. Three low-quality …

Exploring Stigma In Access To Treatment For Women With Co-Occurring Substance Use And Sex Addiction, Maria Alejandra Knox-Lugo Sep 2026

Exploring Stigma In Access To Treatment For Women With Co-Occurring Substance Use And Sex Addiction, Maria Alejandra Knox-Lugo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite the high prevalence of substance use disorder among adult women in the United States, treatment engagement remains low, particularly for women experiencing co-occurring substance use disorder and compulsive sexual behavior. Although stigma is a documented barrier for individuals with substance use or compulsive sexual behavior in accessing and remaining engaged in behavioral health services, its effects on treatment access for adult women with co-occurring substance and compulsive sexual behavior have not been adequately scrutinized. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore how human services and behavioral health professionals perceive stigma experienced by adult women with co-occurring …

Counselors-In-Training’S Perceptions Of Counselor Educators’ And Supervisors’ Roles In Developing Grief Counseling Self-Efficacy, Tonya Andrews Sep 2026

Counselors-In-Training’S Perceptions Of Counselor Educators’ And Supervisors’ Roles In Developing Grief Counseling Self-Efficacy, Tonya Andrews

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Counselors-in-training (CITs) encounter grieving clients despite limited grief-specific preparation. Understanding these experiences could inform preparation for supporting grieving clients. Guided by Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study explored these perceptions. The purposive sample included 10 CITs who were master’s-level students completing field experience or postgraduate counselors under clinical supervision, lacked independent licensure, attended or graduated from Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)–accredited programs without required stand-alone grief coursework. None had a direct supervisory, instructional, or evaluative relationship with the researcher. The research question was: How did CITs perceive and make meaning of the role …

Inventorying Library Stacks With Google Sheets And Alma Api, Kevin Cretsos, Natalie Gut Sep 2026

Inventorying Library Stacks With Google Sheets And Alma Api, Kevin Cretsos, Natalie Gut

Roesch Library Staff Presentations

Inventorying is crucial for managing and stewarding library collections to ensure items can be found by patrons and library staff. Although Alma has some capabilities with its Shelf Reporting Inventory tool, there are some limitations

  • Must upload a file
  • No real-time information as you scan
  • No timestamps as you scan
  • Limited to choosing only a single location (this option may not work as well if you interfile locations together)
  • Range inventory option requires a call number type and call number range

For this project, we adapted a previous inventorying tool with Sierra and Google Sheets for Alma.

Roblox-Related Protest And Political Opposition In Indonesia: Game-Native Repertoires And Discursive Resistance, Ruth Stany Melisa Sep 2026

Roblox-Related Protest And Political Opposition In Indonesia: Game-Native Repertoires And Discursive Resistance, Ruth Stany Melisa

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

Digital games increasingly intersect with political communication as environments in which political grievances are reformulated through gaming cultures and vernaculars. This study examines Roblox-related protests associated with the Indonesia Gelap movement and the controversy surrounding the Indonesian Armed Forces Law (UU TNI) in March 2025. It asks how political opposition is constructed through game-native and symbolic repertoires and how these discourses invoke socially shared representations and relate to political power. Using a qualitative design, the study analyses six selected digital artefacts retrieved from X and TikTok. Visual and textual material constitute the primary data, while captured comments are …

Impact Of Consumer-Led Education On Stigma Reduction In Mental Health Nursing, Anju Sreeram Sep 2026

Impact Of Consumer-Led Education On Stigma Reduction In Mental Health Nursing, Anju Sreeram

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Mental Health Nurses who have direct contact with consumers can exhibit discriminatory attitudes towards people with mental illness. Evidence shows that anti-stigma interventions are effective in improving stigmatised attitudes towards mental illness to facilitate the recovery of people with mental illness, and the contact-based interventions are more impactful than other modalities of education and training.

The current study aimed to examine the effectiveness of consumer-led education in reducing stigmatised attitudes among mental health nurses. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design was used to assess the impact of consumer-led education.

The results show that Mental Health Nurses generally held positive attitudes …

Powers' Conjecture On The Third Largest Eigenvalue Of A Graph, Kevin Schmidt Sep 2026

Powers' Conjecture On The Third Largest Eigenvalue Of A Graph, Kevin Schmidt

Master's Theses

In 1989, David Powers conjectured that for any connected graph G on n vertices, the k-th largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix satisfies λk(G) ≤ ⌊n/k⌋ for every 1 ≤ k ≤ n/2. The conjecture has since been resolved case by case, in the sharper form λk(G) ≤ n/k − 1: the case k = 1 is classical, k = 2 was settled independently by Hong and by Powers in 1988, and k ≥ 4 was shown to fail by Nikiforov and Linz. This thesis surveys the resolution of the remaining case, k = 3, achieved in March 2026 by …

Ensuring "The Right To Live In The World": The Right To Repair Powered Wheelchairs, Maximillian J. Grahl Sep 2026

Ensuring "The Right To Live In The World": The Right To Repair Powered Wheelchairs, Maximillian J. Grahl

Duke Law Journal

Twenty-seven years ago, in Olmstead v. L.C., the Supreme Court held that improperly institutionalizing people with disabilities is a form of unlawful discrimination. In doing so, the Court acknowledged that people with disabilities have a right to live free from confinement. Yet today, repair restrictions and outdated Medicare standards combine to threaten powered-wheelchair users' ability to live out in the world. Some states have responded by passing right-to-repair laws, which require powered-wheelchair manufacturers and suppliers to provide the resources necessary for more accessible and more timely repairs. This Note analyzes these state laws in the context of previous right-to …
