Infectious Aortitis Secondary To Gastrointestinal Pathogens: A Case Series And Syndromic Review, Natasa Kostic, Ilana Goldberg, Devin Weber
Division of Internal Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations
Aortitis is a rare but serious complication of infection that results in high morbidity and mortality. The most common location is in preexisting aneurysmal disease in a patient with multiple chronic comorbidities. The pathogens often reflect gastrointestinal bacteria, the classic example being Salmonella spp., but also include other enteric flora, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and more. Herein, we describe 2 cases of aortitis caused by gastrointestinal bacteria and review management of this complex syndrome.

Introduction: Physical activity is fundamental for children’s health and well-being, yet most children are not active enough. School-based interventions aiming to increase children’s physical activity have largely been ineffective, perhaps due to a lack of consideration of the unique culture within each school. The aim of this paper is to understand the key aspects of physical activity culture in English primary schools using the organizational culture framework.
Methods: A four-month rapid ethnography study was conducted within three primary schools in Bristol, UK, between March and July 2024. The findings draw on observations, interviews, documentary data, photo elicitation, informal conversations and …

The Transformative Essence Of Liminality: Pilgrimage And The Example Of St. Francis Of Assisi, John Kruse
The Transformative Essence Of Liminality: Pilgrimage And The Example Of St. Francis Of Assisi, John Kruse
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Looking at the life of St. Francis of Assisi (1181/2–1226) through the lens of liminality can help to understand this complex figure. Anthropologist Victor Turner, for example, has explored Francis’s embrace of poverty as a means of experiencing liminality and the communitas that accompanies it. Three episodes in the life of Francis in particular constitute liminal experiences in that Francis left behind old ways of being, crossed thresholds, and experienced transformation: his encounter with lepers, his renunciation of possessions and coinciding embrace of poverty, and his encounter with Sultan Malik al-Kamil. Understanding these episodes as liminal experiences not only helps …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services created a waiver to reimburse telemedicine services. It is important to understand factors that facilitate incorporation of telemedicine into ongoing cardiovascular practice.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of telemedicine and office visits delivered by cardiologists between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023, for Medicare beneficiaries. We calculated the adjusted incidence rate ratio (aIRR) of telemedicine visits, representing the proportion of a physician's visits delivered by telemedicine, to identify factors associated with telemedicine use.
RESULTS: There were 23 334 physicians in our cohort; they were predominantly …

Path Odd-Covers Of Graphs, Steffen Borgwardt, Calum Buchanan, Eric Culver, Bryce Frederickson, Puck Rombach, Youngho Yoo
Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship
We introduce and study “path odd-covers,” a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The path odd-cover number of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is. We prove an upper bound on in terms of the maximum degree Δ and the number of odd-degree vertices of the form . This bound is only a factor of 2 from a rather immediate lower bound of the form . We also investigate some natural relaxations of …

Impact Of Depression And Anxiety On Outcomes Following Muscle-Preserving Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody And Fusion., Sahil Garg, Sean M Muir, Kyle Jamar, Alexa Dietrich, Patrick Young, Sonny Gill
Surgery Articles
Background: The impact of concurrent diagnoses of anxiety and depression has not been extensively studied in spine surgery. We hypothesize that a muscle-sparing technique may be associated with decreased postoperative pain and improved strength postoperatively compared to open techniques, decreasing the stress of the postoperative recovery process. Therefore, this study aims to assess the benefits that a modified muscle-preserving lumbar fusion technique (Wiltse transforaminal lumbar interbody and fusion (W-TLIF)) would have on this subset of patients.
Methods: One hundred twenty subjects who underwent a single-level W-TLIF were identified with a recorded diagnosis status associated with mental health. The subjects underwent …
Intranasal Dexmedetomidine-Esketamine For Pediatric Perioperative Use, Regina Oliver, Nancy Westbrook
Intranasal Dexmedetomidine-Esketamine For Pediatric Perioperative Use, Regina Oliver, Nancy Westbrook
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Managing preoperative anxiety is a dominant clinical challenge in pediatric anesthesia, with up to 70% of children exhibiting clinically relevant distress prior to induction. Heightened anxiety before surgery is not simply a temporary emotional issue, but can be directly associated with a negative perioperative experience including resistance to separation from parents, difficult mask acceptance, induction agitation, emergence delirium, and maladaptive behaviors days/weeks postoperatively. Traditionally, oral midazolam has been the predominant anxiolytic of choice selected for managing preoperative anxiety in pediatric patients. However, despite its high utilization, oral midazolam may produce variable onset times, paradoxical reactions, and variable clinical effects that …

Community-Led Climate Vulnerability Assessment In Alviso, Ca, Addie Chappelle, Grace Falci, Gigi Jones, Alex Crouse
Environmental Studies and Sciences Senior Capstone
Located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, Alviso is a historically underrepresented community facing disproportionate impacts of climate change. San José has directly contributed to Alviso’s infrastructure instability, particularly after its controversial 1967 annexation, which excluded Alviso residents from municipal planning processes. Alviso currently ranks in the upper quartile statewide for environmental burden with high exposure to hazardous waste, linguistic isolation, impaired waterways, and solid waste facilities. Our study produced a Community-Led Climate Vulnerability Assessment that centers resident knowledge and integrates it with environmental data to support equitable climate planning. We used a participatory, co-production research approach that …
Living In Liberal Areas Reduced Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Conservatives, Brittany L. Kmush, Rachel E. Dinero
Living In Liberal Areas Reduced Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Conservatives, Brittany L. Kmush, Rachel E. Dinero
Population Health Research Brief Series
Political divisions shaped public health responses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with conservatives expressing higher vaccine hesitancy than liberals. But does where conservatives live matter? This brief summarizes findings from a study using survey data from 683 U.S. adults (ages 18-94) collected March-April 2023, combined with 2020 presidential election results by zip code. The authors found that liberals consistently had low vaccine hesitancy and high uptake regardless of where they lived, but conservatives living in lower Trump vote share communities reported lower vaccine hesitancy and higher vaccination and booster uptake than conservatives in high Trump vote share communities. This pattern was …

Shell-shaped Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) represent a paradigmatic instance of quantum fluids in hollow geometries exhibiting phenomena that bridge from ultracold atomic to astrophysical realms. In this work, we present a comprehensive survey of the dynamics, thermodynamics, and collective excitations of shell-shaped BECs, synthesizing two decades of our group's theoretical work in light of recent experimental breakthroughs. We begin by analyzing the evolution of a BEC from filled-sphere to hollow-shell geometries, illustrating the necessity of microgravity conditions to avoid gravitational sag. We then analyze the collective mode structure across this evolution and pinpoint a universal dip in the frequency spectra as …

Assessing Misidentification Potential When Using Percent Developmental Delay As An Early Intervention Eligibility Criterion, Allison Gladfelter, Sarah Thomas, Christine Nguyen, Sarah O'Connor
CISLL Publications
Purpose:
Several states' early intervention (EI) eligibility criteria require children to show developmental delay based on age-equivalent (AE) scores. Unfortunately, the use of AE scores to determine eligibility is not empirically supported because they do not account for the normal variability of scores found within the general population. The purpose of this project was to explore the likelihood of eligibility misidentifications based on AE scores rather than using standard scores that incorporate normal population variability.Method:
Scoring tables from six standardized assessments commonly used for determining EI eligibility were digitally converted and analyzed using Python code. This code compared all …Beyond Alumni Dollars: Developing Engagement With Graduate Alumni, Kyra J. Snyder

Physics-Informed Neural Network For The Simulation Of Turbulent Jet Grout Flow, Rakam Lama Tamang, Yichuan Zhu, Joseph Coe
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study presents a physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework to simulate axisymmetric submerged jet grout flow using high-fidelity data generated from ANSYS Fluent simulations. The CFD model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the k-ε turbulence closure model, converted into axisymmetric form to reflect jet grouting. The PINN incorporates continuity, RANS equations, and turbulence closure equations into the loss function, enabling it to learn turbulent flow physics without requiring mesh generation. Separate neural networks were used for each flow variables—axial velocity (U), radial velocity (V), pressure (P), turbulent kinetic energy (k), and dissipation rate (ε). The model was …

Legal decision-making is expected to meet high standards of consistency and rationality, yet human judgments in this domain are known to be influenced by procedural factors such as evidence order and intermediate evaluations. Recent work has shown that even legal professionals, including judges, are susceptible to such biases when assessing criminal cases. This raises a critical question: do large language models, which are increasingly proposed as decision-support tools in legal contexts, exhibit similar procedural biases—and if so, can these biases be mitigated? To address this question, we tested GPT-4o and GPT-5.2 using a controlled legal judgment task adapted from prior …

This study aims to characterize the erosional behaviour of the Ganges riverbanks by investigating the geotechnical properties and seasonal hydrological fluctuation in Bangladesh. Multi-temporal satellite images (1973–2020) were analysed using Geographic Information System (GIS) to select study locations for detailed analysis. The GIS-based analysis identified erosion-accretion patterns and highlighted erosion-prone and stable riverbank locations. Further, field investigation, geotechnical laboratory analyses, and slope stability model using SLIDE software were used to assess the targeted study factors from the selected locations. Field investigation and geotechnical assessments revealed that bank material cohesion and composition strongly influence erosion. River flow at the outer bends …

Schneider, Phil, Evelyn Burkholder
Bronx Jewish History Project
Summarizer: Sophia Maier
Phil Schneider was born to American-born parents of Ashkenazi descent in 1948. After World War Two, his parents moved to Parkchester, where Schneider lived until he married. He describes Parkchester as racially segregated, with Irish and Jewish communities who were generally “friendly,” except when he was chased on Sunday mornings after Hebrew school. Despite ethnic divisions among the children, his parents identified as American first. Schneider grew up more closely identified with his Jewish cultural identity than his religious one, while his grandparents, from Eastern Europe, spoke Yiddish and were religiously observant. Shneider, who was an anti-religious …

Emergent Patterns In Individual Perceptions Of Domestic Violence Among African Immigrants, Annah Ezuma
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Domestic abuse continues to be a prevalent and intricate matter within society, frequently concealed by silence. The comprehension of individuals’ perceptions of abuse is of utmost importance in the advancement of efficacious interventions and support systems. Among African immigrants in the United States, perceptions of domestic violence were often influenced by several factors like religion and migration stressors. Despite increasing concerns about abuse within this population, limited research has explored how they interpret abuse and how these perceptions shape help seeking behaviors and disclosure. The gap was significant because of the cultural transition and many immigrant experiences. This qualitative study …

Pilgrimage On Paper: A Contemplative Writing Practice, Angelika Halstead
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Autobiographers, poets, and journal keepers have always intuitively known the transformative and healing power of personal writing. Some people write in a cathartic way to empty themselves of stored up emotions and experiences. Having freed themselves from old baggage they are prepared for their lives to take new directions. Others write because they want to find out what they think and make meaning of their lives. They write in pursuit of truth and find that as they become honest and face the truth their lives change and their stories turn into new and re-storied versions. It is also known that …

While researchers are in agreement about the positive relationship between spiritual activities (SAs) and mental health (MH) among the general population, the relationship between spiritual tourism (ST) and MH, particularly among young adults, is yet to be adequately investigated. As such, important questions regarding the status of religion in the contemporary world can be addressed through the study of current pilgrimage trends. A ‘pilgrimage boom’ is occurring in Britain and other parts of the global anglosphere (Williams, 2020 & O’Keeffe, 2022). Yet, many of these modern pilgrims do not identify with established religious categories (i.e., Christianity). Significant gaps in our …

Aotearoa / New Zealand has a history of colonisation with a significant destructive impact on Mãori, the indigenous people. It is only in more recent decades that this history has become more widely ‘remembered’ by the non-Māori population, in large part due to efforts made by Māori activists, scholars and legislators. The growing awareness of this difficult history is often met with a mixture of bewilderment and anger. The authors have observed a growing readiness in themselves and others to look at the emerging truth of our history. We see the practice of pilgrimage as a powerful tool to amplify …
The Stars That Fall At Our Feet: Personal Reflections On The Serendipity Of Liminality In Pilgrimage, Ian Palmer
The Stars That Fall At Our Feet: Personal Reflections On The Serendipity Of Liminality In Pilgrimage, Ian Palmer
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
