The Effect Of Race On The Evaluation Of Quarterbacks, Kian R. Sohrabi May 2022

The Effect Of Race On The Evaluation Of Quarterbacks, Kian R. Sohrabi

Psychology Honors Projects

Black quarterbacks have faced stereotypes and biases about their performance for decades. While Black quarterbacks are more common in the NFL nowadays, it is not clear whether their performance is being evaluated without bias. Black quarterbacks are often discussed in ways that emphasize their physical abilities but criticize their mental attributes. This current study sought to investigate the effect of race on quarterback evaluation. Study 1 examined the effect of race on fans’ evaluations of quarterbacks; Study 2 looked at the effect of race on evaluations by high school football coaches. Participants completed an online experiment in which they were …

Chemotherapy Induced Painful Peripheral Neuropathy: A Treatment Option, Maria M. Acevedo May 2022

Chemotherapy Induced Painful Peripheral Neuropathy: A Treatment Option, Maria M. Acevedo

Cohort X

BACKGROUND: Cancer diagnosis and treatment are tragic issues for patients. Besides the psychological aspects associated with therapeutic interventions, chemotherapy-induced painful peripheral neuropathy (CIPPN) is one of the long-term side effects of intravenous chemotherapeutic agents used to treat cancers. This type of neuropathic pain has not effectively responded to medications for peripheral neuropathy treatment. Duloxetine is effective in decreasing CIPPN. This evidence-based research investigates the practice changes that can be implemented to reduce the pain ratings of survivors with CIPPN.

METHODS: In this practice improvement project, patients with CIPPN who reported a rating of ≥3 on the pain scale with the …

A Comprehensive Bison Management And Research Plan For The Crane Trust, Joshua D. Wiese May 2022

A Comprehensive Bison Management And Research Plan For The Crane Trust, Joshua D. Wiese

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

The Great Plains were once a vast grassland ecosystem, but, due to agricultural and human development, are one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America. What remains is generally fragmented, threatened by invasive species, and lacks the natural ecosystem processes that shaped these grasslands such as periodic wildfire and bison grazing. Since 1978, the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust, Inc. (dba “Crane Trust”) has worked to maintain the function of grassland and riparian habitats to benefit endangered Whooping Cranes, Sandhill Cranes, and other migratory bird species. They protect ~8,100 acres, including the largest contiguous portion of lowland tallgrass …

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) are an essential part of type 2 diabetes disease management. This study assessed whether self-reported symptoms of depression, glycemic control, and reported intervention by a RDN had an impact on the quality-of-life in person diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. An online survey was created using Qualtics software which was distributed to a convenience sample of online support groups for people diagnosed with diabetes as well as the personal pages of the researchers. The survey was available for 10 weeks and collected demographic data, information regarding the RDN intervention and assessed participant diabetes related quality-of-life using …

Effects Of Evidence-Based Discharge Instructions On Follow-Up With A Healthcare Provider In Patients Presenting With Mtbi-Like Symptoms To A Health Clinic At A Rural Sports Camp In The Pacific Northwest In The U.S., Eva G. Bergner May 2022

Bergner

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a major public health burden affecting both children and adults in the U. S. (Sarmiento et al., 2019; Schuchat, Houry, & Baldwin, 2018). The management of mTBI at summer camps is not well characterized in the literature. Epidemiologic studies on summer camps have reported that 25% of all injuries were to the head, face and/or neck (Kolberg et al., 2020; Robinson, Arbogast, Garst & Corwin 2019). The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of evidence-based instructions for follow-up with a healthcare provider in patients presenting with mTBI-like symptoms to a health …

Improving Septic Patient Outcomes Through A Nurse-Led Quality Improvement Project In A Rural, Midwestern Hospital, Allyssa C. Sweers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Sepsis is a complex and costly problem that continues to afflict hospitals across the globe (Napolitano, 2018). If it is not identified quickly and treated promptly, sepsis will progress to septic shock and create an increased risk of mortality (Napolitano, 2018). The best way to improve patient outcomes is through early detection and precise treatment (Rello, Valenzuela-Sánchez, Ruiz-Rodriguez, & Moyano, 2017). Through staff education and clinical decision tools, such as checklists, septic patients are more likely to have a favorable outcome (Storozuk, MacLeod, Freeman, & Banner, 2019). The purpose of this DNP project was to decrease fluid resuscitation fallouts and …

Identification Of Translesion Synthesis Inhibitors That Target Rev7/Rev3 Protein-Protein Interactions, Seema Patel May 2022

Identification Of Translesion Synthesis Inhibitors That Target Rev7/Rev3 Protein-Protein Interactions, Seema Patel

University Scholar Projects

Translesion synthesis (TLS) is a cellular mechanism utilized by cancer cells to tolerate DNA damage caused by chemotherapeutics, like cisplatin, by replicating past unrepaired lesions. This increases the rate of mutations, which leads to the emergence of drug-resistant cancer cells. Preliminary studies have shown that disrupting the protein-protein interactions (PPI) in the TLS heteroprotein complex increases cells’ sensitivity to first-line genotoxic chemotherapy, illustrating how inhibiting TLS assembly and function can significantly increase cancer cell death. These results underscore the therapeutic potential of targeting TLS PPI. My thesis focuses on identifying inhibitors capable of disrupting the Rev7/Rev3 TLS PPI. This study …

Body Dissatisfaction In Division Iii Collegiate Male Athletes: An Exploratory Study, Andria Merrill May 2022

Body Dissatisfaction In Division Iii Collegiate Male Athletes: An Exploratory Study, Andria Merrill

The purpose of this study was to explore body dissatisfaction in collegiate male athletes participating in varsity sports at SUNY Cortland. The specific aim was to determine the prevalence of body dissatisfaction in collegiate male athletes and other intra-individual factors that may exist within varsity men's sports. Thirteen participants completed electronic surveys for the Weight Pressures Scale for Male athletes (WPS-M), the Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS), and the Body Esteem Scale …

The Influence Of Short-Term Goal Setting On Student Performance And Motivation, Amber Lefever May 2022

The Influence Of Short-Term Goal Setting On Student Performance And Motivation, Amber Lefever

Master's Theses

Student goal setting is one powerful tool that can influence students' attitudes and achievements. This mixed-methods study examines the effects of short-term goal setting on the performance and motivation of students in a fifth-grade classroom. The goal-setting intervention provided students an opportunity to gain success through intrinsic rewards and strengthen their self-efficacy skills. Data were collected and analyzed over a three-week time frame. This presentation provides details on the effectiveness of goal setting in the classroom and procedures for structuring goal-setting interventions for upper elementary students.

The Mythos Of Lilith: A Collection Of Madwomen, Megan Mau May 2022

The Mythos Of Lilith: A Collection Of Madwomen, Megan Mau

Master's Theses

For too long, women’s stories have been mitigated, translated, truncated, and censored, if they were even recorded at all before the world could hear them. What could women be writing that would be so threatening to incite such censorship? To a male-dominated world, anything that could disrupt their illusions of power is a threat. If a woman penned a narrative of her experiences in this world, or if she were to begin speaking on a new way of thinking that called for change, that must be stopped. The ultimate goal is to prevent women from writing or stepping out of …

Finite Mixture Model Of Hidden Markov Regression With Covariate Dependence, Shuchismita Sarkar, Xuwen Zhu May 2022

Finite Mixture Model Of Hidden Markov Regression With Covariate Dependence, Shuchismita Sarkar, Xuwen Zhu

Applied Statistics and Operations Research Faculty Publications

In recent days, a combination of finite mixture model (FMM) and hidden Markov model (HMM) is becoming popular for partitioning heterogeneous temporal data into homogeneous groups (clusters) with homogeneous time points (regimes). The regression mixtures commonly considered in this approach can also accommodate for covariates present in data. The classical fixed covariate approach, however, may not always serve as a reasonable assumption as it is incapable of accounting for the contribution of covariates in cluster formation. This paper introduces a novel approach for detecting clusters and regimes in time series data in the presence of random covariates. The computational challenges …

Developing Policies And Procedures For Restorative Accountability At Southwestern Assemblies Of God University, W. Lance Meche

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This project was designed to address a lack of policies and procedures at Southwestern Assemblies of God University that support its restorative accountability approach in addressing student conduct violations. The student handbook provides rights and responsibilities afforded each student as well as the procedures that appointed staff members are to follow in the event that campus policies are violated; however, the language used in the student handbook did not address modern student culture, nor did it procedurally assist staff members in helping students to develop spiritually. The project intervention involved staff members who address student violations with grace as well …

In this article, we outline progress and challenges in establishing effective health promotion tied to visitor experiences provided by protected and conserved areas in Canada. Despite an expanding global evidence base, case studies focused on aspects of health and well-being within Canada’s protected and conserved areas remain limited. Data pertaining to motivations, barriers and experiences of visitors are often not collected by governing agencies and, if collected, are not made generally available or reported on. There is an obvious, large gap in research and action focused on the needs and rights of groups facing systemic barriers related to a variety …

A Pandemic Of Greed And A Disease Of Poverty In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque Of The Red Death", Benjamin Herrick May 2022

A Pandemic Of Greed And A Disease Of Poverty In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque Of The Red Death", Benjamin Herrick

Master's Theses

The breakers tripped. Again. The breakers, a mandatory halt to trading on the floor of the stock exchange in response to the S&P falling more than 7% from the previous close. This was instituted after the Crash of 1987 to calm the markets before trading is allowed to resume. They are supposed to mitigate a drastic crash. They have only ever triggered once before, in 1997. Not for the tech bubble. Not even in the crash of 2008. All trading stops for fifteen minutes when the Level One breaker trips. If it drops further in the same day, the Level …

F. Scott Fitzgerald’S Homme Épuisé: Usurping The “Madwoman” In Tender Is The Night (1934) [2022], Emma Hill May 2022

F. Scott Fitzgerald’S Homme Épuisé: Usurping The “Madwoman” In Tender Is The Night (1934) [2022], Emma Hill

Master's Theses

Nineteenth-century women writers commonly use themes of entrapment and madness in what are now classified as gothic novels. In texts such as Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, and The Yellow Wallpaper, confinement and madness are synchronous in developing the figure of “the madwoman.” These texts were written during a time when it was uncommon for female writers to seek publication, and many used pseudonyms to get their works published or to be taken seriously by critics. The “madwoman” emerged as a powerful trope to articulate what writing under a patriarchal system feels like. That is to say, confinement scenarios resulting from female …

Evaluating Cremation In Umm An-Nar Period Mortuary Practices Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs), Malena Butler May 2022

Evaluating Cremation In Umm An-Nar Period Mortuary Practices Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs), Malena Butler

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

Chemical changes in bone composition that occur during the process of cremation have begun to be explored alongside corresponding macroscopic changes to bone color using a variety of analytical instrumentation. This research employed a lesser-utilized method, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), alongside Munsell Color Charts to assess elemental changes that may occur in archaeological bone at varying cremation temperatures. It was hypothesized that differences in color would be indicative of different chemical compositions present in bone, despite previous evidence for at least some diagenetic change. Distal humeri from Umm an-Nar (2700-2000 BCE) period tombs Unar 1 (n=31) and Unar 2 (n=28) …

Drawing The Line: Exploring The After-Work Recovery Process Using A Latent Profile Analysis, Alyssa Michels May 2022

Drawing The Line: Exploring The After-Work Recovery Process Using A Latent Profile Analysis, Alyssa Michels

Theses and Dissertations

The present study utilized a person-centered approach to examine the individual differences in the after-hours recovery process and begin to elucidate the differential influence of boundary management variables (i.e., segmentation preference, segmentation supplies, and boundary control), on variables that are important to the after-hours recovery process (i.e., after-hours work, recovery experiences, and recovery outcomes). Previous research has shown conflicting results regarding the negative influence of working during non-work hours on recovering from work, as well as inconsistencies concerning the boundary management variables that moderate this relationship. The person-centered analysis revealed that quantitatively distinct subpopulations or profiles, made up of different …

Effects Of Sunrise/Sunset Lighting On Corticosterone Levels In Coturnix Quail (Coturnix Coturnix), Hannah Feuerborn May 2022

Effects Of Sunrise/Sunset Lighting On Corticosterone Levels In Coturnix Quail (Coturnix Coturnix), Hannah Feuerborn

Poultry Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Both genetics and environment play an important role in the growth, performance and overall welfare of poultry species. Current commercial production practices typically do not mimic the natural environmental conditions of ancestral poultry species, specifically lighting requirements. In nature, poultry species are subjected to natural day length and the slow rising and setting of the sun. This is compared to commercial conditions in which lights are sudden on/off, not mimicking the natural trajectory of the sun in terms of light intensity and exposure. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of genetics and the effect of sunrise/sunset lighting on …

Side-Channel Analysis On Post-Quantum Cryptography Algorithms, Tristen Teague May 2022

Side-Channel Analysis On Post-Quantum Cryptography Algorithms, Tristen Teague

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The advancements of quantum computers brings us closer to the threat of our current asymmetric cryptography algorithms being broken by Shor's Algorithm. NIST proposed a standardization effort in creating a new class of asymmetric cryptography named Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). These new algorithms will be resistant against both classical computers and sufficiently powerful quantum computers. Although the new algorithms seem mathematically secure, they can possibly be broken by a class of attacks known as side-channels attacks (SCA). Side-channel attacks involve exploiting the hardware that the algorithm runs on to figure out secret values that could break the security of the system. …
